There seems to be a sort of euphoria about the new rules Great but I would say not so fast Let s see how they do in the league and in real games Did you ever play 13 a side football it’s totally different game Now 11 v 11 in one half wow that even more lightweight It’s a bit contrived a bit forced for me and a bit to tri na cheile Going to be difficult to police that is the 3 up at all times Basically turning it into a 11 v 11 game jeez 1 the throw in I’d leave 4 players as is except I’d space them 15 yards apart and allow only two contest the throw in None of this sideline gimmick' the ref can decide whether to throw in to the front two or the back two The real blight on the game I genuinely feel is when There’s a good attacking move and the the forward s are approaching the top of the D see s some congestion and opts to go backward s over the 45 to outside the defensive ring that backward pass there right at that moment is what’s killing the game as a spectacle Never mind the massed defense the real culprit is the constant recycling Ad Naseum Look closely at the next game and ask yourself why the excitement of the close contest the approach to the score is so often anticlimactic it’s because team position there so called quarter back at midfield so they can safely go back into the safety area at the slightest sign of any jeopardy that right there is the kill joy and it’s repeated over and over now in all games till there will be no more spectators interested in watching I’m looking for no more passing or bringing ball back wards over the forty five once you’ve crossed it shoot or pass or get turned over but keep the game a contest please thank you I see where referee Gough is raising some questions On todays paper The constant recycling and passing back has to be sorted

Yes, Does anyone know if whatever rules are passed, will they be implemented at club level aswell in 2025, or just apply to inter county?

The closer it gets to the changes, I don’t think I want the two point arc to come in. I just feel it will distort the scoring too much. I believe the other changes will make enough of a difference without changing the scoring. 1v1- good idea, no issues. Kickouts. Definitely like the idea of it. I do feel that at club level if the wind is very strong it might be an issue but nothing drains the life out of a game more than conceding kick outs. Goalkeeper- There has been push back on this online about creating 12v11 in one half but I think it’s definitely worth trying. 3v3. Definitely worth a go Advanced mark- no need for it Scoring- discussed above the issues with it Delaying play- Jack made a good point about players faking getting stopped to get an advantage which might become an issue. Worth trying. Solo and Go- I like the idea of it Black card- definitely a better rule but might be more open to interpretation Dissent- 50m for dissent from players and 13m from sideline. Has to be a good thing.

The FRC are adamant that it needs to be introduced at all levels for continuity. I think all the rule changes with the exception of the 50 metre desent rule will come in.

I can't support the 50m rule for discent either. It's fine to suggest a high level of respect for referees in a professional sports environment but lets be honest about it, some referee's decisions at club level just boggle the brain. Most interactions with referees could be described as robust conversations with confused players and a 50m penalty for opening your mouth at a club match is crazy.

This could be a nightmare considering the quality of refereeing at some levels locally, egotistical chest thumping aside.. unless the FRC introduce a system like rugby where the referee communicates with a designated player it won't work, but we all know referees are not exactly open to questioning...

All the rules are passing.
I'm delighted because the game badly needs it.
Plus Kerry spoke up that the rules should be applicable to club football aswell.
A very good day for our game.
Roll on 2025

The 3 up 3 down rule was the only rule needed the 2 pointer is terrible and the countdown clock these are going to make club matches very difiicult to referee especially when there is no clock on the pitch to look at in the last few seconds of the game when a team needs a point to win the referee will have to countdown himself shouting the numbers

Delighted, I was really for the new rules since I saw them, I thought they were excellent. Wasn't sure they'd all be voted through, so very happy to see they have.
The 2-pointer arc is actually the one I was most hoping would go through. You could see in the trial games, it has two good effects: it really reduces the over-and-back hand-passing, because players frequently have the good option of taking a 2-point attempt. And it creates space inside, as defenders have to come out to defend the edge of the arc.
Looking forward to see David Clifford play under the new rules, he must be excited about them.
Looking forward to seeing Kerry play a more attractive brand of football too, they've been really awful to watch in my opinion, the last couple of years. I think it will suit them, and may lead to an upturn in fortunes.

We will look back on today as a watershed moment. It will also separate the real coaches from the spoofers and god knows there's plenty of them.

Well the rules have been adopted emphatically with most having over 90% in favour and the closest one on mid 70% which is still emphatic in any book.
It is for all grades (club and county) from January 1 with the exception of competitions already underway - these will be completed under the rules the competitions commenced.
I welcome the attempt to solve some of the woes of the game and feel its brave to implement such a degree of change in one sitting. I worry about the implementation, particularly at club level where the pressure of refereeing standards/fitness/ability is already a weakness. The power of the referee is game changing with the 50 mt for decent rule, depending on how some refs choose to use it - the need to properly mark all fields for every game is another concern.
I hope we give the rules a chance and I wish them every success in making our game more watchable and entertaining again.

I hope you're right and I'm wrong, however, I have my doubts the capabilities of referees at ground level will enforce correctly resulting in many frustrating incidents where the '50 yard' penalty will be applied... at intercounty and top tier all may be applied correctly.. outside that, I see carnage...

www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-41526245.html'Let's try them out' - Kerry boss Jack O’Connor broadly backs proposed rule changes The Kingdom manager says the game was not enjoyable to coach or play. Fri, 29 Nov, 2024 - 07:18 John Fogarty Jack O’Connor has given his broad endorsement to the Football Review Committee’s (FRC) rule changes to improve a game that “wasn’t enjoyable” to watch, coach or play. Ahead of Special Congress in Croke Park on Saturday, the four-time All-Ireland SFC winning Kerry manager has backed a large majority of the FRC motions that will go in front of delegates. Although O’Connor has reservations about how the delayed foul proposals might be implemented and suggests the new advanced mark may require an amendment, he supports the majority of rule changes. They include a minimum of three outfield players in each half at all times, the solo and go and two points for a converted kick from play or a free (not 45) outside a new 40-metre arc. “In general, I think the proposed rule changes are very positive,” opened O’Connor. “They’re intended to speed up the game and reduce some of the negativity that has come into the game. The (FRC) boys have done a great job with them, they have put a lot of thought into them and let’s try them out. “The three-up is the one I said all along would be a game-changer because when you turn over the ball, you’re going to be able to kick and it will speed up the game and reduce the amount of bodies on the other side of the field. “The one I would be slightly worried about is moving the ball forward 50 metres for deliberately slowing down a free kick. While you want the game to be played on quickly, I think the rule could be open to exploitation a bit like the black card when it came out first and a lot of boys were deliberately running into boys and there was a lot of fellas being hard done by. Referees need to watch that one if it comes in. “But, by and large, these rules will help the game. The inside forward has become an endangered species really when you think about it. One point from play kicked between six of them in the All-Ireland final, that shouldn’t be the case. By right, your inside forwards should be getting most of your scores. The game had turned into a stalemate in many ways and it wasn’t enjoyable to watch it or to coach it or to play it, I would say.” Critics of the three-v-three measure claim goalkeepers will push forward to create 12-v-11 overloads but O’Connor doesn’t envisage that happening too often. “I think teams are going to push higher up the pitch because if you back off into your own half, you’re almost inviting the goalie up. “The implication is putting more pressure further up the field. It’s only when teams retreat that you will see goalies go up. You’d be a brave man to go ahead of the ball while there is being pressure put on where the ball is.” However, O’Connor really is concerned about how referees might be hoodwinked by the 50m advancement for the likes of delays and dissent. “Anything that speeds up the game is good and the solo and go is obviously after a free and referees have to be careful about players looking to be delayed to get the 50m advantage. Lads have to get out of the way but sometimes they don’t have time to do that. “Having to give the ball to the opposing team, I can’t envisage how that is going to work. I’d suggest it’s very difficult for players to hand over the ball in the white heat of battle. Maybe drop the ball where the foul happened but handing it back respectfully, I would have my doubts about that one.” O’Connor is happy to see the FRC return the value of a goal to three points from four. “I never agreed with the four because I just felt like a point would become like a behind in International Rules. It would become almost incidental. I think it’s fine. The two-point rule, obviously people like long-range kicking and defenders will have to push out rather than parking themselves around the old ‘D’.” He likes the change to the advanced mark, which if passed can be won inside the 20m line but notes how difficult the luxury of advantage for a goal chance and the compensation of a free for attackers will be for their markers. “It had become a little bit farcical with a dinky 20m kick into the chest out around the 45 counting for one. That’s not what the rule was designed for. This will promote more directing kicking inside at times. “The only thing I would be worried about is it’s going to make life awful tough for inside backs. Like, how long is advantage going to last? I think they will have to put a time limit on that. If it’s left up to the referee’s discretion, every referee will have a different interpretation. There will have to be some definitive time put on that advantage, I would suggest.” O’Connor experienced the clock/hooter during his time playing in New York and is a fan. Having spoken out about time-wasting during sin-bins before, he also welcomes the proposal stoppages will be taken into consideration during those 10-minute periods. “In Gaelic Park, there was no point pretending you were injured because the clock was stopped. The time-wasting during black cards over the last few years had become farcical. It only a question of who was going to go down.” O’Connor also hopes the rules will come into effect for the club game at the same time as county despite concerns from boards there will be practical issues to hurdle for that to happen. “You can’t play one game with the club and another with the county. There is no sense in that.”
