Prior to Paddy joining Kerry the reputation of this Kerry team was that we were easy to get at and had a soft centre. Infairness Paddy deserves credit for making Kerry defensively much better. I think we have regressed the last two seasons but how much of that is Paddy's fault. Paddy is not the coach anymore so it wouldn't surprise me if he took the job. A great opportunity with some brilliant players however something is not right in Derry considering it'd 5 months since they lost their management. He is very highly thought of and well liked by all accounts. Paddy is well liked by all the players and he gave Kerry a great deal given the long travel etc. Hope he stays but if he leaves I'd wish him well. Completely agree with you Royal, for years every team regardless of capability got success by running direct at us and we simply couldn't handle it, Tally completely eradicated this aspect and made an all star of Tadgh as a result. I think we didn't build on this or step it up a level when teams tried to exploit and drag Tadgh out. If he does in fact go, best of luck to him, the lure of the being number one in your own neighbourhood is hard to resist. In saying that something is amiss or off kilter up in Derry... they went for serious serious contenders and division one league champions to just imploding spectacularly when the rest were coming to their peek. Derry under Tally, Tyrone under Malachy O'Rourke, Armagh building on last year as well an Donegal under McGuinness will make for some Ulster Championship in 2025.

Looks like it is between him and Philly McMahon for the job.

That five of last years management gone now. Tos some turnover and when you consider Jack has only one year left it heaps a pile of pressure into the year.

Just a matter of opinion, do people not think Tally had a big influence in Kerry going so defensive in 2024 or are people blaming solely Jack. Tally was a big reason we won in 2022 as he added the defensive solidity that we lacked under Keane.
However, do people not think Tally was an influence into how defensive we have gone since. I for one would be interested to see the style of football we play without Tally.

The fact that they are making some pretty fundamental rule changes would tell you that the issue is more with the game than Tally.

I think it’s fairly clear that Rory Gallagher was wanted back by either the players or co. Board or maybe both. Anyone going in after that would know that they were second choice. It seems that Malachy O’ Rourke didn’t want the job because he didn’t want to be listening to a well known pundit. It’s going to be a tough job for Paddy Tally considering expectations are pretty high and there does seem to be something not right within the county. Club rivalries are massive in Derry so it takes a lot of work to get them all pulling in one direction. It could be compared to Kerry hurling in many ways. A lot of clubs in a small area with great rivalries but takes a lot of work to get everyone working together.

I think Tally had a major influence on our style of play since ‘22 - Jack, conservative by nature , seemed influenced by Talky & we looked more like Tyrone than Kerry! Think if this move to Derry happened a few months ago, we might have retained more of the current management team. It will be interesting to see if Jack will replace him.

So, Paddy has gone. First of all, here we have another case of a broken promise. How ironic that Jack is a victim of this carry on when he engaged in this behavior a couple of years ago himself . What comes around goes around..
I notice some people here are lamenting Paddy’s departure. No regrets from me. On the contrary , I am very happy with the news. Paddy is a graduate of the school whose philosophy I would describe as football nihilism. That philosophy, and of course Paddy not its only the practitioner, has been instrumental in making football increasingly unwatchable in recent times. So much so, that it was necessary to engage in a root and branch revision of the rule book. One can only hope that the situation is retrievable. People here might say that he made a contribution to our success in 2022. I am sure he had an input and of course that influence is impossible to quantify but that is not the central issue.
The major issue is the overall health and attractiveness of football. How many neutrals and people with only a vague interest in football are watching and attending our games? A seriously declining number I suggest. If that is the case , then ask yourself why it is so. My thesis , is that Paddy and other coaches like him have a played a significant role in that unhappy development. For that reason I say, good riddance.
Now , some people might contend that it is all about winning. Style and attractiveness and aesthetics matter little. A reasonable viewpoint I suppose but that is where we part company.

Unfortunate you think this way about Paddy... I don't think we would have won in 2022 only for him... was it 1 goal conceded between league and championshipthat year...? I think he will be a loss.. he has won all irelands as a coach.. didn't have much success with Down as manager..

We played lovely football under Peter Keane and won nothing. Pragmatism won out and Kerry were tactically well set up over the past 3 years. Unfortunately individual errors cost us if we want to be blunt about it. Paddy wasn't a coach this year anyway so it's no real surprise.

Can’t imagine they be any change to the back room team, with the new recruits, I would assume plenty expertise.

A fair comment but it can't be going unnoticed that Kerry are going more defensive by the season since Tally came in. We would all be in acceptance if Kerry continued to play the same style we played in 2022. Even if it didn't bring further success. However we've been bringing this defensive game to a new level every season since, and we've gone from AI winners --> AI Finalists --> AI Semi-Finalists. Gone from our strengths which has always been our ability to score and put up big scores. I'm sure we've all been grateful for the influence Tally had in bringing Sam home in 2022, but at the same time I personally think his role as a coach has run it's course and think it is time we get someone else in or put all our eggs in O'Neills basket. I wish him well in Derry but obviously not to a level that will cost Kerry.

Harte's 'nationality' would have been an issue and so Paddy will be similarly challenged. It was one of the things that always amazed me - united against the old enemy but jazus Ulster counties detest each other to the extent that it gives an entirely new meaning to words like frenemy. Derry are not a bad team so Ulster will be competitive like seldom before.
Jack must feel he will miss him, otherwise he'd have replaced him.
Of course we have to be careful what we say on here but this is hardly good news for us.
For the hell of it, what do forum members think the pecking order for Sam is, and don't bother conferring with Padraig Power & co?

Blaming Tally for the cautious, defensive style adopted by Kerry under Jack is off the mark. He was a cog in the wheel that Jack assembled and he brought an improvement in our tackling and increase turnovers which led to less goals being conceded. It came at a cost
Jack is the overall architect of our style of play and even going back to the successful minor sides he coached the template of mind the ball at all costs could be seen - he then put his team in place to accommodate this. On those minor teams it was all about the system of play and patience. Flair was not encouraged and slowing the opposition when they get possession to allow the defensive structure get its shape was paramount.
The real issue for 2025 is how we are going to deal with the new rules and hopefully we have a proactive plan for this and will not be rabbits in the headlights of the new order taking a couple of years to adapt. We need to be the early adaptors.

2025, brings hope like every year, but the reality is telling me, we are coming up short, I constantly bang the drum, our first 15 are solid, but all irelands are won by 16 to 26 in the modern game, they don’t get the plaudits but there the guys that must not show weakness, because if they do, we get exposed. I just don’t see 2025 delivering the guys 16 to 24 that can support us winning an all ireland.

If these rules pass than there's an asterisk beside 2025.
It's a radical new game, A game that will suit the kickers and the fittest team with the best bench.
We should be positive, Kerry are always in the shake up.

A great opportunity with some brilliant players however something is not right in Derry considering it'd 5 months since they lost their management. The club rivalries aren't a thing anymore. Everyone in the county sees this as the best team we've had since the 90s and they want the best for them. Truth be told the majority of match going fans wanted Rory Gallagher as did the county board but they were under too much pressure from social media and the media to go through with it. In the circumstances Paddy is a good appointment. I know a lot of Kerry fans don't like his style but he was part of a team that brought you an all Ireland. 1 all Ireland, 1 final and 1 semi final is a decent return for that Kerry team imo. He is being replaced by Cian O'Neill who's Galway team played very defensive football. All coaches at the top level were defensive tbh. Looking forward to a very competitive D1. I expect us to be better than last year in the championship but maybe not hit the heights of Rory Gallaghers team.
