we lost to Dublin because we kicked 6 or 7 wides in the last 10 minutes. we gifted them a goal. thats why we lost, nothing to do with negativity in our approach. the same approach that had us ahead by 3 points, on 3 occasions. they took their chances last 10 mins, we kicked them wide. The Dublin goal which cost us came from negativity. We had the ball and instead of going forward we passed backwards and it was intercepted so yes negativity cost us the All Ireland. Dublin’s goal was down to a lack of movement/ options by our forwards - GW had no option & had to go back.

Thats a ridiculous comment.'"If i dont like it stay at home".I was already there watching the tripe.I come to support and watch Kerry.I dont know how they will play until i see.I will be at semi too God permitting and hopefully the performance will be better.Today Kerry played boring ball and most neutrals agree with that.Derry .Dublin would have beaten Derry in style today ive no doubt. I for 1 won't be paying to watch that muck again. There are a generation of young adults who won't bother getting there kids involved in a sport based on the hope of 1 entertaining match a year. Why would they. Kerry would have won comfortably if they played a bit more expansoevly. Finally if derry were a disgrace what were Kerry given there far superior talent. Derry are a very decent team, with a lot of very good players who have lost their way in the Championship, and are now out deservedly. I don't think Kerry have "far superior" talent, Clifford aside. If we had played any other way than what transpired we would have lost because they have pace everywhere and would have killed us with counters. I totally accept the game was awful to watch (especially first half) from an entertainment perspective, I did find it exciting and unbelievably tense though. I thought the Kerry team were heroic and trojan in the way they slowly but methodically broke Derry down until all but open submission by minute 75. No other previous Kerry team imo would have won that game yesterday. Separately,I was thrilled for Tony Brosnan, thought he gave a great performance, emptied the tank completely and got great scores as well, especially the last one, a dummy of great beauty. Was initially surprised he was pulled, but he was unsurprisingly flogged by then.

Were the ref, linesmen and umpires blind to the pulling, holding and general dirty play by Derry? How David Clifford kept from retaliating I do not know. Shocking carry on and then Coldrick gives Clifford a yellow. Such a cop out!!!! Pat Spillane was right in how he described it

we do need to be smarter in one thing and thats when opposition corner back goes forward, he is tracked by a defender, not having David back and then paul murphy or foley our furthest player forward.
david should never pass opposition 45.
it happened in 2015 with gooch and philly mcmahon.

Pat Spillane was right in how he described it I will say this in Coldrick's defence, he didn't see what happened and the two yellows are a result of the information received from his linesman. Noel Mooney (Cavan) should be discarded by the GAA referee panel if he thinks that was 2 yellows.

Well , it ain’t my cup of tea but as the saying goes, it is better to win a bad one than to lose a good one. I am one of the dreamers, a reflection of my age I suppose, who wants to win with panache as opposed to the pragmatists who claim it is the arrival that matters not the journey. In other words , you adopt the style and tactics that maximizes your chances of victory. Oh that one could marry the dream and the pragmatism but the nasty old world doesn’t pan out like that. Perhaps, that marriage will take place before the race is run and then we all can be happy Either way , as I have been stating here for a couple of weeks , I expect Kerry to maintain their progress to the top of the pyramid. The only question is the methodology of that journey.
The one resemblance to last year’s match was that once more we finished with a flurry of scores. That is always a positive sign. Derry made it a struggle for us for sixty or so minutes , facilitated by some cowardly officiating , particularly as the regards the treatment of David Clifford . David , pulled and dragged with impunity all afternoon, eventually, as he lay on the ground, was despicably kneed into the abdomen in front of a linesman. His reward ? A yellow card. The hope is that Jim Gavin’s committee will improve our game as a spectacle . A further hope is that Jim will propose that inefficient officials, who abdicate their responsibility , will be banished to a Gulag.
That first half was painfully ponderous and pedestrian, with a lot of our players making their contribution at a snail’s pace. So funereal was the pace that it was not until the final ten minutes or so of the match that we heard that uplifting chant of Ker ry Ker ry Ker ry. We did not hear it until then because the fare on the pitch was so uninspiring.
The second half was a marginal improvement, from a Kerry standpoint anyway. There was a little more energy and urgency, propelled from the back by that man with attitude, Brian O’Beaghlaigh , and by Diarmuid O’Connor at midfield , who played a major role in that period. I was in the Canal End and had a bird’s eye view of his soaring catch on the goal line at the end. Reminiscent of Darragh O’Se in Limerick all those years ago. The effort was further augmented by the impact of subs: Cillian , Killian and Dylan Geaney. I was especially pleased for young Cillian Burke. Anybody who has seen this boy/man perform at club level could never doubt him. All going well, he should be a pivotal figure in years to come.
Therefore victory was ours, not with the flair old curmudgeons like me would would crave but as the pragmatists would maintain , the arrival trumps the journey. A discussion for another day I suppose
Shane Ryan could not have done better with his kickouts . Reading some of the comments , I notice nobody is calling for Paul Murphy’s demotion today. I wonder why! He was masterful. In a similar vein , I notice a lot of people ,not for the first time , are questioning the worth of Paul Geaney. To those people I say, the next time you are at a match, you will not see it on TV, observe his work rate and the runs he makes and you will be enlightened as to why Jack has him as a starter. Tony Brosnan , another man who is often maligned on this Forum. The man just oozes class, being a smashing kicker of the ball, a rarity nowadays. Contrary to what a lot of people think , he is not work shy either. I get the impression that Tony is very much forcing himself on the consciousness of the opposition. He was replaced yesterday after scoring a beauty, a weary man.
I was discussing the championship recently with an acquaintance and he was wondering why I was favouring Kerry to go all the way as opposed to the Dubs. I replied that I had seen nothing from Dublin this year apart from that notorious NFL game in Croke Park which , to borrow a phrase , on mature reflection , was a bizarre aberration . Simply too bad to be true from a Kerry standpoint. That was my reasoning in any case. Speaking of Dublin, I notice one contributor here has said that they would have eaten Kerry alive yesterday. I am loath to accept that considering they failed to eat alive a Galway team containing at least five invalids.

Maybe Dublin should stop trying to eat intercounty players alive. It might be the reason they all fell ill before the Galway game. A bad case of Mayo poisoning. 😂

Dublin’s goal was down to a lack of movement/ options by our forwards - GW had no option & had to go back. No space to put the ball in because Dublin were super-defensive for the whole game. They won and a lock of them have nine All Irelands now while it will be sitting in our craw forever more. More power to them. I've been saying regularly since 2019 if we went super-defensive we'd be basically impossible to beat. What I desperately wished after 20 minutes yesterday was that we wouldn't blink and would continue to mirror the Derry approach as I feared we wouldn't be bloody-minded enough to resist the temptation eventually to run down blind alleys or lump ball in. Not because I relish that style of play but because if that's what it takes to get over the line in a game I want to see that Kerry have what it takes. It's now proven, and any team that thinks if you bring this type of pressure to bear on Kerry they will eventually crack over 70 minutes, may now think again. Bring on the rule changes, so hopefully we can avoid this situation of 15 men behind the ball but there are going to be All Irelands won in the meantime and I'd rather win them playing whatever way we need to than looking at someone else go up the steps in the Hogan Stand. We were pilloried by all and sundry for our tactics after the final in 2014 and it was one of the sweetest victories of all time.

I'll give you another counterfactual. What if Derry scored a pox goal and won by a point after Kerry had nothing from counter attack? DC tipped a ball away for a 45 in the 1st half. If he didn't Chrissy McKaigue would have scored that goal If DC is up the pitch either McKaigue should be back there with him and if he isn't that is advantage Kerry. From my POV. All talk now.

Feel better now after reading that Veteran.Thank God for this poster. I'm laughing away to myself at the "Gulag" "the bizzare Aberration" and "the five invalids that lined out for Galway"

If Kerry are dragged into boring matches by their opponents, the worse that will happen is that the football review committee will come up with rule changes for more attacking football! While yesterday's match was a difficult watch in some respects, it was good to be finally involved in a game with everything on the line.

I feel sorry for referees in the current game. There is way too much to monitor and they get very little assistance from their linesmen and umpires. The linesmen are usually inter county refs themselves and they are hopeless at off the ball incidents.
At last year's final the umpires suddenly asserted themselves and overturned a foul V DC. It was a correct call but why not call the other ones he's getting fouled and give a handy free in front of the posts.

I watched it back again so a few things to mention. I would have given motm to Brosnan. Two cracking points, a beautiful assist for o Beaglaoich and was very good defensively. Twice in the second half, it was him picking up possession inside our 21 when Derry made a mistake.
Based on his first half performance Moynihan could easily have been substituted- he typified the excess caution. In the second half for the 15 or so minutes he played, he did quite well, won breaking ball and played at least three incisive footpasses to teammates deep in the Derry 45. I am not sure if we scored from them but he played much much better. His work rate of course can never be questioned.

David Clifford's last three Croke Park championship visits yielded three yellow cards - v Derry S/F 2023. A yellow for a fair shoulder. - v Dublin AI Final 2023, in a game where James McCarthy carried out multiple reckless assaults, David got a yellow for the umpire peeing his pants when Fitzsimons roared at him to overturn a free to Kerry. - v Derry Q/F 2024. Kneed in the stomach on the ground
It's depressing reading, the lack of protection given.

Job done yesterday. Poor spectacle but onwards and upwards we go.
Nobody had a poor game yesterday which is a good sign. Squad depth is good with lots of options.
Kerry are no longer a team reliant on two or three players. We are now a 'TEAM'.
David Clifford incident, DC was pulled and dragged all day, Marquee players like DC get very little from referees which is a disgrace. The usual two yellow cards doesnt cut the mustard for me. Lineman yesterday should not do another game this year as needs to go to 'Specsavers'.
It will take a huge performance from a team to stop Kerry lifting Sam Maguire this Year i feel.

Only posting now as didn't arrive home until this afternoon due to an unexpected attendance at last nights Taylor Swift concert. Haven't watched the game at all but, reading some of the reports it validates my own thought that it was an abysmal spectacle for the game of Gaelic Football.
I understand why we setup the way we did and to a certain extent what the men from the Oak Leaf county did as well. What I couldn't fathom is why with 5 mins left and Derry chasing the game they still dropped deep and didn't put any pressure on the ball. It reminded me very much of Tyrone under Mickey Harte when even though they needed the ball they still remained in their defensive shell.
Not in anyway intended as a disparaging remark but, all the Kerry players were much of a muchness yesterday. Workmanlike would be what I would call most of the performances put in. They played the game the way it needed to be and executed the tactics as prescribed.
Saying that Ryan, O'Beaghlaoich and Tony B were the Kerry players that stood out. Along with DOC in the second half and the 2 Cillians off the bench. Foley struggled with McGuigan but, did have a couple of first half interceptions.

Lots of Kerry players losing their footing on Croke Park yesterday. More so than the other 3 teams, or so it seemed.

.Do we forget it was this negativity that stopped us beating the Dubs in last years final. We had our foot on Dublins throat and released it.Its sinful not to be more creative with the forward talent we have. we lost to Dublin because we kicked 6 or 7 wides in the last 10 minutes. we gifted them a goal. thats why we lost, nothing to do with negativity in our approach. the same approach that had us ahead by 3 points, on 3 occasions. they took their chances last 10 mins, we kicked them wide. yes we gifted them a goal - dispossessed following yet more lateral handpassing across our defence back in the 2019 drawn final we are a few scores up and a man up, all we had to do was keep feeding Tommy Walsh and Killian Spillane ball as they had the Dublin full back line in a state of panic. Instead we retreated and went lateral and negative and we all know how that ended up negative play has cost us as many matches as it has won them for us

Thank God I couldn't make this match. God awful tripe out of both sides. Well I'm here and sorry I came. Football is f..c..d.. I attended Kerry's last championship match in Croke Park before yesterday which of course was last year All Ireland final Before Paul Geaney's late 1st half goal you could hear a pin drop so dead was the atmosphere, it was also dead yesterday. You could hear the players calling each other so silent were the crowd Derry seem to be getting more of the blame for yesterday but I think we are getting off light , we were not much more positive than them and Derry cannot be blamed for the negativity of the Kerry v Dublin final last year. I will attend any remaining matches Kerry have in this years championship out of support for the team and county but if was a neutral from another county, I wouldnt attend to watch such a lifeless, soulless occasion

Think we had him as a ref at some stage this year (league?) and he was brutal then too. McKaigue's dropping the knee was a dirty act. He wasn't even involved in any challenge preceding it, just pulled Clifford down off the ball and dropped on him. Other Kerry players were being taken out off the ball too but that was the worst. God, we'll really miss Mickey Harte when he goes. Does the cccc or whoever not review these things anymore? They used to take a keen interest in Kerry games onetime.

If they went zero tolerance on the off the ball stuff for a season, it would be gone from the game immediately. Let's say a straight red for any off the ball fouls. I enjoy the physicality of the game but not the off the ball stuff.
