This is not a doomsday thread but I'd like to have a reasonable discussion regarding the future of Kerry football. We have been at the top table for over 100 years but I have concerns over a few matters
1. The demise of South Kerry. Rural depopulation is a significant issue in this area. Teams amalgamating underage and the numbers in Colaiste na Sceilge dwindling doesn't bode well for an area that has always provided great footballers if not some of our greatest. It doesn't look like the WFH change post covid has led to many families relocating to here. 2. The demise of north Kerry. Similar to above with SK we are having issues with playing numbers. Every Kerry team needs a few tough bucks from NK. This area is not as isolated as SK and you could easily commute to Tralee or Limerick. The proposed bypass of Adare will hopefully help this. This year's squad only had Jason Foley who is a bit different from the typical NK back. 3. The demise of West Kerry. Same again. I saw recently that Dingle minors had to amalgamate with Lispole and Annascaul and this is coming just 10 years after Dingle won out the county for the minors.
There are ebbs and flows with certain clubs but it does appear that certain areas are prospering due to growth in population eg Milltown and other parts of Mid Kerry. I don't recall Kenmare producing too many great players back in the day but recently they have a very good squad and produce decent underage players.
It's not all about population as can be seen in Kildare and Meath where both have underachieved in recent years despite the many advantages they have.

I thought I heard he signed a new contract. What a massive loss he was. Probably the next best after Clifford and would have been a match for Fenton.
Going back to my first post two large towns of Listowel and Castleisland haven't produced too many footballers. Compare it with a small club like templenoe or even fossa

Compare it with a small club like templenoe or even fossa I agree there seems to be huge anomalies in production of talent. Very few footballers have come from Listowel, Castleisland, Killorglin, Cahersiveen, Ballybunion recently. These are our biggest towns besides Tralee, Killarney, Dingle and Kenmare. North and South Kerry are producing very little. I've no explanation for Killorglin. If you follow the minors, lots of players seem to come from small clubs like Rathmore, Gneeveguilla, Gkenflesk etc Maybe we should do a documentary over the season like soccer teams do and spend the money on coaches. It would also promote the sport.

Killorglin seems to be growing in population and went through a very fallow period underage in the 00's and last decade. They were constantly one of the best minor championship teams on the 90's.

A Middle section of the county seems to be where the economic power and population growth is concentrated, draw a line from Killorglin over to Killarney, on to Tralee and then from Tralee down to Killorglin. Another factor which will have an effect is the number of young people choosing to travel now, after several years of being unable to go anywhere. I have lost count of the number of 20 somethings I know, all with jobs, who are planning to head abroad in the coming months.

Plus football is probably second to rugby and soccer in both Listowel and Castleisland. As for Ballybunion when is the last time a senior player came from there? I think people worry too much about players coming from town teams when players are coming from elsewhere.

We've a small population with lots of emigration still. Lots of people leave Kerry for college or work and never come back. So we can't afford to have black spots in the county producing no talent. I wonder if the Ukraine refugees are playing football.

We need to maximise the town's playing population like the way rural clubs do. Listowel have only produced the Kennelly's and Stephen Stack in the last 50 years. Castleisland have Neligan and Mossy Lyons. Excuse me if I've forgotten anyone. That's a poor return.

We should be getting free playing gear to these kids.

I know North Kerry has hurling but should still produce footballers. They don't have the rural depopulation of South Kerry. I was thinking if the plans for the Shannon Estuary come to fruition, it'll be great for Kerry football. There's big plans for wind energy and green hydrogen. German experts were over and said they were envious of the natural resources we have. Tarbert and Foynes are earmarked to be major ports. Ballybunion produced Ogie Moran and the Bomber. Since 2007 Listowel, Castleisland, Cahersiveen, Killorglin, Ballybunion and Kenmare have produced Bryan Sheahan, Sean O'Shea, Stephen O'Brien and Peter Crowley. That's 6 of our 9 biggest towns. They all have growing populations besides Cahersiveen.

They had 5 or 6 minors in 95 when they also won the Hogan cup. I remember Kilcummin had similar numbers in 2011 albeit without the profile or pedigree. Some clubs can have a golden generation of sorts. A lot of it in my opinion comes down to good coaching. Look at Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne. They were never in the discussion regarding school teams and then they win 4 Munsters in a row. Was it all down to Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Tommy Giffrin training them? Did they just make hay from their golden generation or is it all of the above. Look at Castleisland basketball. They were well able to compete nationally against bigger schools and clubs, largely, in my opinion down to good coaches some of whom are now international coaches. Rathmore school won out all Irelands recently against the massive Dublin, Cork, Galway and Belfast schools. We can do it if we put our mind to it. We have the passion and interest.

It's coaching, passion, culture, underage structures, grassroots, talent retention, good teachers, good parents etc. You'll always have cycles and golden generations though also. I still think talent is 50% genetics and the rest comes from above. All the coaching and passion in the world wouldn't make me an intercounty footballer. My worry is we're losing or missing out on talent. Donaghy could've easily quit and focused on basketball. He won us at least two AIs. I think a lot of Rathmore's basketball success is down to Jameson Hughes, so good coaching. Castleisland have had a basketball culture for decades, I'm not sure how it started. I think I'm too obsessed. When the Macroom bypass was completed, my first thought was "That'll be good for Kerry football. Easier for lads travelling to and from Cork". Likewise when the Cork - Limerick dual carriageway was announced, I thought the same. Same with plans for Shannon Estuary.

Even the hearing of a decent club player teaching in a primary school gets me enthused. The sem boys must be in awe of Clifford. In fairness I don't think we miss too many players but I agree re Donaghy. If the GAA had a combine like the NFL he wouldnt have got 'drafted'. Then look at Tom Brady who was an outlier in that regard.

A teacher can influence 100s of young people in just one year. Over a career it's 1000s. I was explaining GAA to Americans recently and that David Clifford teaching PE would be the equivalent to Michael Jordan or Tom Brady being PE teachers. We can't be complacent about losing talent or missing late developers. Paul Murphy, Paudie Clifford, Donaghy, Aidan O'Mahony, Tom Sullivan (Rathmore) didn't play Kerry minors. I'm sure there's loads more. It's easy for lads of 18 or 19 to go a different path and not come back. I also hope we're getting immigrants from other countries and their children involved in GAA.

Absolutely. Lee Keegan and Conor McManus and Fenton didn't make minor teams and you could argue they were the best defender, midfielder and forward of the last decade. I think though with current development squads there is less lads slipping through the cracks.

If Geelong were eliminated early in 24 maybe he d come back home. Wishful thinking anyway! Yes, very much wishful thinking. Even if they lost every game it's still a 22 game schedule to the end of August at least.

This topic of this discussion is the main reason why so many of us are vehemently against the white elephant project being proposed in Killarney.
We need to put money into facilities and coaching and not into a stadium that will be filled once every 2 years.
A simple set up would be to have, if possible, full time S&C coaches & skills coaches working with each district board and be allocated to the clubs via the boards.
Also new/existing sites across the county should be identified for all weather facilities. If there are decent indoor halls at specific clubs/areas then they should incentivised to open these up and/or develop them so they meet a minimum standard.
We need min of 7/8 all weather facilities around the county with a reasonable gym access too- gym doesn’t have to be new and can be just be a PT style facility whereby it is leased out the rest of the week.

Fitzgerald stadium only needs minor upgrades. The focus should always be on coaching coaches, coaching teachers, facilities, grassroots, development panels, game development officers etc.

Great points made here. There are some detractors regarding astro pitches but I think with our climate particularly on the western seaboard they are essential. I think I saw a club in the west with an indoor gaa pitch (not the GAA dome) and it looked great. There are 4 months of the year from November to December where very little sports are played outdoors. I'd like to see these halls linked in with the primary schools. It would solve a lot of childcare and health issues if kids could spend an hour or more playing in a safe environment after school.

Killorglin seems to be growing in population and went through a very fallow period underage in the 00's and last decade. They were constantly one of the best minor championship teams on the 90's. The Laune were very strong at underage in the 1980s\1990s They won 4 minor championships, 4 senior county championships and an all ireland senior club in that golden era Had sone wonderful mentors at minor and senior level at the time

Oh I know they made a sub appearance. I just mean it's easy to give up on football or become disheartened if you're not making making underage Kerry teams. At that point it would be very easy for a lad of 18 to go down a different path. Ah yes I understand. It's interesting to look at the Terrace Talk website and see the amount of fellas over the years who played a lot at minor and U20/21 level but didn't make it at senior level. Yeah it's a great site. Fair play to whomever maintains it. Do you know who does it? Sure, of the 5 in a row minor AI winners, only a fraction are playing with Kerry Seniors now. The standards ridiculous. I know brilliant club players who never played minors. Brilliant Kerry minors and u21s who never made it at senior. I think the difference at the top level is you need technical, athletic and cognitive ability. Lots of good players will only have two of these abilities.
