The quality south Kerry team of the early 2000s would have had 8 or 9 Ireland winners
Declan Sull, Brian Sheehan, Killian Young, Ronan Connor, Ronan Hussey, Stephen Sullivan, Denis Dwyer, Maurice Fitz, Adrian O Connell

Everybody delighted when East Kerry defeated Crokes in 2019. New horizons. This year they appeared great on paper but only showed that in final and maybe againxt Narries. Only 16 teams allowed compete in Senior County Championship, and in Kerry every player has the right to challenge for a medal, whether he comes from Rock Street or Tousist. Thats the theory but in reality with a pick of 10 clubs and 2 of those clubs fielding two league teams only the elite players get a look in and that for many is the nub of the issue. Then again with Croke Park limiting the number of teams in the county championship to 16 and Kerry having 60 club sides the notion of everyone having an opportunity to play county championship is pie in the sky. getting the club v division balance right with the limit of 16 is difficult - avoiding supercharged divisions is less so and dividing out or limiting the number of intermediate sides in any 1 division is something that needs to be considered. The imbalance is even more evident at minor and u20/21 level and it will damage the game if left continue.

Lads the divisional sides are going nowhere so I don’t think it’s a decent use of our time debating it.
The divisional sides have and will continue to serve Kerry football as a way of giving exposure to players at smaller clubs, they are a great mechanism for bringing through talent.
As I have said on here before, along with others, is that the formulation of the divisional sides needs to be tweaked. They need to be assessed every year for strength and changes made if needed.
This year was a great example- the Brendans lost na gaeil and thus a team that had been challenging fell away as a contender while the strongest divisional team gained another large club and walked away with the championship.
There should be a mechanism in place where this is better managed? The Brendans should have gained teams to compensate them and if east Kerry were gaining legion then they should have lost other clubs so as to maintain some balance
Also getting rid of divisional sides would kill rural clubs as their best players would transfer to bigger teams to get exposure like happens in a lot of other counties.
Do you think you’d see a multiple all Ireland winning player stay with division 5 and novice level cromane if mid Kerry didn’t exist? Very doubtful

Alot of bad wides so far. Dominance of Championships goes in cycles. Where were East Kerry between 1999 to 2019? I don’t think getting rid of divisional teams is even in consideration – and rightly so in my view – but you can’t compare East Kerry now with East Kerry then. Rathmore were in the senior championship on their own every year from 2000 to 2019 inclusive. Kilcummin also had 20 senior championship campaigns in a row from 1998 to 2017. Legion had an unbroken spell in senior championship from I think 2006 to 2021. The very strong Spa contingent have dropped out, and Kilgarvan have come in since. Fair enough if all of the 3 long time senior clubs dropped down to intermediate because they were no longer competitive, but you can't say that for Rathmore and Legion in particular. The balance in power started at least partly due to the championship restructure when the senior club number was reduced to 8 which meant there was no more room in the championship for at least 2 of the top 10 clubs in the county, and East Kerry have benefitted more than most among the divisional sides.

Looking back over the records and folklore its interesting to note that the East Kerry division was established in 1925 and the Mid Kerry clubs broke away from East Kerry in 1947 to form their own district. 1925 was the year the county championship resumed after the civil war with no county championship in the 1920 - 1924 period. Tralee Mitchels who won in 1919 had evolved to Tralee district in 1925 before the split into Stacks, Mitchels and Rahillys in 1928.
East Kerry with 10 county senior titles are joint third on the role of honour and have joined South Kerry as the most successful divisional side. This year was the third time they beat their former colleagues of Mid Kerry to claim the title. They also have three victories over Waterville in county finals.
Also interesting to note that EK has one All Ireland Club title from 1971 and three Munster titles 1965, 68 & 70. Did not realise divisional sides contested the AI at one point in time.

Cian Gammel Daragh Roche Pa Warren Donal O Sullivan None of the above mentioned have all Ireland medals There were all on the panel this year and have received medals. I thought Jack Sherwood was on the panel in 2014 - Terrace talk has him starting 2 league games and coming on in 3 in 2014 but no championship appearance that year. He played championship in 2013 and 2015. Jack Sherwood doesn't have an All-Star - was some sort of copy and paste typo error.

I remember hearing that a rule was brought in pretty much straight away after the 1971 Club All-Ireland banning divisional sides.

Seeing as he never played underage with Kerry where did the Junior selectors see him? Obviously with Fossa or East Kerry but as junior selectors they go to watch alot of junior clubs so the chances are they saw him with Fossa first and then East Kerry. Wow thr lengths people will go to try and prove a point.

Would also be interested to hear the rationale behind the Legion & Crokes amalgamated team which won the County Final in a replay in 1983.

Man I have no problem at all, just recognising the achievement by the rockies in that 70’s team, you have to admit a huge achievement and not come close since bar a combination of 12 teams, and far from a stacks man am I, hope that helps . Here’s to a great weekend of club football semi finals.

Legion and Crokes played in the county championship as Killarney on and off for many years prior to 83. Killarney also won the football championship in 1949 and won a hurling championship in the late 60s. Legion and Crokes haven't played together since that win in 83. However legion and Spa played together as Killarney in the county championship during the mid 80s.

Very much a case of Crokes falling back into the pack rather than any team surpassing them as of yet. East Kerry on paper are a better team than Crokes at their height but whether they play a better brand of football is questionable.

Killarney was the name of the hurling club, wasnt a divisional team, just lads who played football with other clubs and played hurling with Killarney as the only club that had hurling was Killarney. The sad thing about is that Killarney hurling club was gone 5 years after the won a senior title! Killarney hurling club were a force at minor in the 1950s, won 3 minor hurling titles in a row

Hah...he wasnt expecting that answer. Still waiting for you to tell us your issue with divisional teams? I have contributed a lot on this topic on the various threads over the years and particularly over the past 2 months. I have stated my views clearly and i am not going to bore everyone to death repeating it again. You either didnt read my posts which is fine or didnt understand the points i made which is also fine. I will repeat very briefly.... The divisional structure is a force for good generally speaking but i believe the county board should have a mechanism to prevent an imbalance as it clearly happening at the moment ...one divisional has 12 Celtic Cross holders and 4 All Stars. If however you are happy out with the current position...thats great.

PS With the longer evenings and if anyone is up for a challenge, what about a breakdown of DC under say the various characteristics that make for a great player - Fielding, Both feet, Dead ball, Scoring distance, Interplay, etc, etc. His strength is often overlooked Spose the only other player with all those skills in the past 30 years anyway were Maurice Fitzgerald and Michael Murphy of Donegal. I didn't mean that as a definitive list though on second thoughts that would be a project in itself. Then Join The Dots, i.e. Cross commonality of skills. Then unique skill, E.g. Maurice 'weaker foot' free taking. This will be tried using AI (Artificial Intelligence) but the key is the knowledge of the subject, not AI and which is really Machine Intelligence. So hey, for starters - let's draw up a list of all the skills say an out field player would have; a good project for long dark evenings, bearing in mind Veteran says it will be a short Winter, what with that Apollo take off by East Kerry with the scheduled landing as we set out to book Sam for another annual holiday. In another vein, I wonder how many of the commentators on Club/District teams are from South Kerry, i.e. South of Tralee. Poor NK, poor relations, ah we've the hurling but the under-contribution to the big ball breaks the heart - or am I fussing here, NK isn't 1/4 of the county, still I think we are under represented and through no fault of selectors, we just ain't nurturing the talent I think?
