Today's game was worth 10 of last years league game against the same opponents. A blessing that Tyrone needed a result.
Terrific final day coverage by TG4 also - picking the right game - a belter - and showing snippets from other games including a tetchy end of match for Armagh and Donegal.

I think today was a learning curve, and learn we did. The things we learned today were to me as follows: 1)- Whatever about our GK situation, Shane Murphy clearly isn't the answer. Ryan will be restored as the number 1 from here in. 2)- Dylan Casey has a bit to go yet, he was absolutely roasted by McCurry all day. 3)- Kerrys strength is playing quick ball in, when we play this lethargic passing game we struggle. 4)- Burns was out of his depth.
A few points to note, Joe O'Connor I thought handled the game alot better than Jack Barry. When Joe went off we were alot slower in transition. Tony Brosnan looks a real threat and his kickpassing is of a very high standard also. Stephen O Brien was one of our best players today, he still has a big role in this team.

Donegal vs Armagh game tight but not a great spectacle though I was watching it from a distance, isolating as just over Covid so other reports might be more credible.
Amazing conditions but the teams appeared to constantly bounce off each other as opposed to an 'ebb and flow' affair, 'tetchy' someone termed it! Even Murphy had a bad wide.
Hard to know if much was learned of either team today, ah maybe spirit being a bit out of sorts didn't help mise.
As for Killarney, when Tyrone wanted to beat us they could - my worst fears are, well getting worse!
BTW did Foley pick up McShane - how did Jason get on overall? Cathal must be as hard to mark as our own David, unmarkable really, make good backs look like also-rans, literally - McShane's big angular strides, Clifford just just drives straight at his man, a defender can only trying to limit them, damage limitation it is.
As an afterthought, just like Donegal saved fuel against us so they would be at their best vs Tyrone a week later, it looks like Monaghan did the same vs Lillie Whites last week so they could do likewise to Dubs, and that they did. Still all wins are worth the same so maybe not - but turnaround by Monaghan is astounding, bearing in mind I didn't see today's game, assuming Dubs were 'as good' as they were vs Donegal.

I wouldn't panic too much. We haven't really learned yet how to deal with Tyrone, but with Sean O'Shea there we would have won. Given the players we didn't have today we look closer than we might think to beating a Tyrone team that had to avoid a loss at all costs. All in all, I think I'm happy enough with how Kerry played and the test will stand to them. Win everything and you don't know what you're doing wrong. We know now and hopefully will be better for it.

Happy enough after the day, big test next weekend.

I know it was a nothing game in the grand scheme of things but that was dispiriting and infuriating at the same time to watch. Why, when Tony Brosnan and Clifford had the beating of their men were we so slow and ponderous to give it in to them? Why did we persist with the short kick out, has Jack not seen Tyrone play….. ever? Anyway, need to get over for next week

Very enjoyable game but also some frustration at the Kerry team.
We have no midfield. I'd love to know how many primary possessions we won in midfield in the entire league. I'd be surprised if it was more than 5. Diarmuid Ó Connor For all his promise tends to go hiding. No midfield is a double edged sword as our keeper has to go short each time which means you have to build from the back and play into a blanket when you you eventually cross half way. Ryan looks to go short each time and will only go long when there are no short options. Murphy at least looks to go long first.
Why wasn't Dylan Casey moved from McCurry earlier. Other than that I wouldn't be too critical of the backs.
In the forwards, the inside line did well given the lask of space (self imposed due to no midfield ball winners). I felt Clifford's shot off the right was a turning point. Tyrone came back with 2 frees after that. Our half forward line OK but Ó Shea and Clifford didn't start.
Thought the referee was cat. Tyrone deserved to win just about but it's hard to have any respect for them given their "tactics" over recent years and again today and I'm not talking about having 15 behind the ball when not in possession.

In the longer term id say today will stand to a lot of lads may be no harm to have found out a few things. Fair amount of class to come back in onwards to croke park now!

Hopefully pundits and commentators on here can stop this crap talk of David Moran only coming on for 15 mins to see out the game. Midfield we have been terrible every single league game so far. David Moran is our best midfielder and arguably the best in Ireland still. He’s only 33 and has adapted his game very well in last few years. Look at semi against Tyrone last year, he basically played as Quarterback. The box to box David is probably gone but we still need David’s nous and football intelligence and superior fielding. He needs to play from minute 1 to minute 70. Our current midfield is not up to it although Diarmaid o Connor will work well with Moran.

There's a thin line between giving a new player experience/testing him out and hanging him out to draw and possibly ruining his confidence. It was unfair to leave Casey on McCurry for so long but hopefully he will learn from it.
On a plus side, in the 2019 semi final Jason Foley had a torrid afternoon, albeit aided and abetted by the dodgy Tyrone water, on McShane. That day he got shown the curly finger. Today Jason continued his upward curve by destroying McShane.
We are still none the wiser on who the best option for goals is. Murphy had a few poor moments today. It will probably cost us later in the year.
We badly need David Moran in midfield.
Coldrick is supposed to be one of the most experienced refs out there but he fell for every trick in the Tyrone book today. A rule was brought in a few years ago where play couldn't be stopped unless it was a head injury. The physio must have ran in 20 times during the game and Coldrick stopped play for most of them. Notice how a fella was down inside the D after the penalty was awarded. Coldrick officials also missed a straight ref for McCurry.
Kerry ended the first half well and surely were bursting to get back out in the 2nd half. But we had to wait. And wait. And wait. And wait to hear the life story of every one of the East Kerry 1979 team. Well over 20 minutes the half time team commemoration went on. That man should never again be given a microphone.

Think Jack is learning that it's a tough gig..we haven't got a team capable of winning 3 of the next 4 All Irelands but we could snap 1 or 2 maybe...were on a par at best with the main teams but not superior to them..it'd be down to the day ..but therell be a pleasure in earning an All Ireland if we manage to do it

Today was a good exercise, against a near strength Tyrone team, who were well worth their win, fighting for div survival. We were down a few for sure, but no harm learning without the full deck, fresher for next weeks final.
We were under pressure in the first half as Tyrone conceded kick out and pulled everyone behind the ball, I think we did some good stuff we’re patient, paid off in our goal , good ball by savage to geaney off loaded to Joe o con, who layed it up for tony, it’s these kind of moves that unlock the blanket, patience the key. It was game played at championship pace, I think we did well overall, management will have learnt some more about the squad. For me, I think we play better with 2 inside, loads of talented forwards, but 3 inside sucks up the space . Looking forward to a league final, again another test for the team, who have yet to win a national title in a final, hopefully put right next Sunday.

Midfield is a worry which is contributing to the problem in goals - we , at the moment, have no option of going long - not one clean fetch today from O’Connors or Jack Barry - we need David Moran badly & probably Diarmuid O’C as a wing forward option. Tyrone have brought the levels of disruption to new depths - every collision brought the doctor or physio racing on to the pitch with full approval from Coldrick - thought he had a nightmare , 2 decisions in particular - 1) A Kerry player toe poking the ball away & being penalised & 2) the decision not to award Morley a free at the death - he was penalising the pull back all day, ignored this one & gave a free out for an alleged foul hand pass. I didn’t see the off the ball from McCurry but then neither did the linesman or umpires - strange one that.

In fairness McCurry was on fire today, I will say casey stuck to his task all day, under huge pressure, did some good things too for sure, a learning day for the kid, not sure if the knock he received off the ball from mccurry, had any impact on him. Great to see SOB put another back to back solid performance behind him.

The big imponderable is are we really any closer to winning an all Ireland than we were last year. Goalkeeper midfield and not enough scoring forwards are the real issues. The elephant in the room is our over dependence on David and Seanie

Leaving Casey on Mc Curry is understandable in the context of giving the lad the chance to learn and for management to see how he would deal with his trickiest opponent to date. Casey is one that many believe is an up and coming player and learning how to cope with difficult opponents is hugely important - switch him in a championship game (or a must win game) but not today. We have plenty of examples of players getting a torrid afternoon and coming back so much stronger for it. The lad needs to head for the video room with one or two experienced heads and analyse his afternoon and be ready to put Mc Curry on his ass next time they meet.

Tyrone had a full strength team out today guys. They were only missing Conor McKenna from last years final. Kerry had 6 or 7 guys today starting that wouldn't be getting into the starting team come Championship. A 1 point defeat against near full strength All Ireland champions is a good result and proves we have good squad depth. Don't start digging the graves just yet. It was a spirited performance despite the defeat. If that was a must win game it would have been very different.

In fairness to Jack, he may have left Dylan on McCurry for the experience. Dylan is mature enough to know he has to step up to a higher level. Afterall, he could be playing in an AIF in a matter of weeks.

It is so much easier to report on a Kerry victory than a a Kerry loss. The extraordinary sunshine in Killarney failed to lift the mood on the way home. When the margin is just a point at the end it is tempting to say that it could have gone either way but in my view Tyrone were the better team all through. The scoring difference was only one but in terms of street wisdom Tyrone were on a different planet. They usually are against us. Some of this street wisdom is not a trait one would wish to become more prevalent but if you get away with it then the end justifies the means, I suppose.
The first surprise for me was to see Dylan Casey on Darren McCurry. In the semi final last year Tom O'Sullivan won that duel. Why the switch today? Dylan, who did some good things as well, could not cope with his opponent, clear from an early stage. To a degree, I can understand the reluctance to make the change too early in the interest of Dylan's confidence but , at the latest, it should have been made at half time. It was not made until the horse had bolted, Darren's goal. While speaking about Darren, contrast the long early balls he got for his scores in the first half and his goal in the second half with the ponderous , lateral cat farting we displayed in that opening half rather then getting it in to our potent inside line, who in spite of all this nonsense reeled off 1-2 during the early exchanges. Sweet God, you provide as much ball as possible, good , bad or indifferent , to players like Tony,David and Paul. I am weary from preaching this and there is no way I am going to reach my normal life expectancy if this methodology continues.
In that first half, we again had the spectacle of Shane Murphy punching a ball away rather than making an easy catch. He did the same against Mayo. I partially forgave him that night, because of the miserable weather and the wet ball etc. Today there was no excuse. It was an easy ball under the cross bar and nobody in his vicinity. The punched clearance went to a Tyrone player who , if I can recall clearly, kicked it wide. Shane wasn't to know that. Shortly afterwards, a high ball went into the Tyrone goalmouth and, in the middle of a cluster of players , Niall Morgan soared high and confidently fielded. Basic housekeeping. While I am referring to Shane, we were awarded a reasonably easy free on the terrace side in the second half. A short time before that we were awarded a free more or less from the same spot which Paul Geaney slotted over. Now, I do not know who decided that Shane should take this one. It was more or less in front of me and I just knew the way he shaped up it was not going to be successful. Poorly struck and wide at the near post. I get the impression Shane is of a nervous disposition, at least when he is playing for Kerry. I will lay off him now.
It was an exciting game in the second half, as indeed was the first half, but it was spoiled by the repeated going to the ground by Tyrone players , feigning injury, when the momentum appeared to be with Kerry. That was part of the gamesmanship, street wisdom, to which I referred earlier. Mr. Coldrick fell for it every time, summoning medical help from every direction. They tell me he is a top referee. In any case it fragmented the game and those were terms of engagement Tyrone successfully laid out.
Stephen O'Brien did make a great run into a highly populated area to win a legitimate penalty. Tony struck it home as precisely as he struck his earlier goal and his goal against Mayo. That man knows how to kick a ball. Kerry fought in vain for a draw point at end, to no avail. I have little doubt, if Tyrone were in a similar position, their street wisdom would have seen then manufacture an equalising free.
Peter Harte and Darren McCurry were the two most productive players on the field.
Apart from Dylan Casey, the rest of the backs did fairly well although one woul have liked them to be bit tighter on occasions. Jason was outstanding again, on Cathal McShane this time.
I don't recall either of our midfielders catching a high ball. Diarmuid is a fine athlete but he tends to be anonymous at times. In Joseph's defence, this was his first outing for a long time. Looking back over the seven games, midfield has been a huge headache, a wasteland at periods during games. This area may upscuttle us before the year is out.
Of course in the heel of the hunt the defeat ostensibly has little significance in that we progress to the final in any case. It does matter psychologically because of the team who beat us. Victory would not have atoned for the championship defeat but it would have laid down a marker for a putative confrontation down stream. Also getting beaten in your own backyard it never pleasant.
The P.A. system in Killarney was dire today. I could not decipher one word he/she spoke. At half time, the East Kerry team who won the All-Ireland in fifty years ago, were introduced. I only discovered what was going on my way out of the match. In any case, this jamboree went on and on and on with the result that both teams and officials were out on the field several minutes before it was decided to have mercy on us and put an end to the circus. It might have been tolerable if we could hear what was being said but God above surely we weren't put into this life to suffer this. Ah, it was a bad day to be an old man in Killarney.

A good League campaign all in all. It sticks in the craw that we let them win in the stadium though. It wasn't on t.v. so hard to figure from Tim and Ambrose if we were as poor as they made out. There was no benefit in beating the same opposition out the gate last year, maybe it even gave them an advantage later on. Great that Kerry now have a good full back in Jason and it was music to my ears to hear Mc Shane going off. Apart from the bragging rights there was little at stake as we were already through to the final. No need to bust a gut today. next week, with atonement and a bit of silverware there for the taking, I'd expect a gut busting performance. I wish Jack and the squad well. Congratulations on reaching the final.

Alot of positives from today and a few worries, positives, Joe O Connor looks at home at this level and will have a big future, Dylan Casey in his third start was given the job of marking one of the Countrys top forwards and altough it was a tough afternoon i saw enough to suggest he has a big future. Begley is in great form and looks a nailed on starter, White looked very sharp when he came on and Graham O Sullivan is now another strong option in defence, Tony Brosnan now looks like a starter in the full forward line so thats giving us more depth up front. Negatives, Shane Murphy i think played himself out of the team today, he seems to struggle when put under pressure, long kickouts didnt seem an option today, im sure other teams will be taking note, very dissapointing that we didn't work a score in the closing minutes, this has been a long standing issue and the famine will go on unless rectified

Coldrick as some have mentioned was truly awful. The “head” injury and fellas running head down into another players arm, he fell for every time. He gave a free out at the end of first half which was a kerry free in (twice). Also missed a 3rd man tackle right in front of him. His linesmen werent much better. He is very immobile around the pitch and was needlessly slowing down Kerry attacks for what can only be described as reffing overhead and admin. I actually think id prefer to see gough in charge again rather than him id a choice of a meath match official.

For those critical of Dylan Casey today have a look at Michael Fitzsimons who conceded 2.7 on Jack McCarron so every back can have a difficult day. It'll stand to him.

Jack has achieved what he set out to do qualify for a league final which he now wants to win give a lot of players experience in tough league encounters and yes find out what players are at this level .. The big positives from today is Tony Brosnan has now arrived on the inter county county scene his confidence should soar from here and we finally have a foil for Clifford .. Dylan Casey struggled today on a good player and unfortunately for him prob won’t feature in the championship but has a good future ahead of him .we again struggled at midfield and while the current incumbents will get us through Munster we will need Moran back involved to win an all Ireland .. I think Ryan will start the final backs are taking shape only one position up for grabs and with o shea and paudie Clifford to come into the forwards the team is taking shape . Mayo a big test but exactly what Kerry need at this time

Kerry did well today. A few frees we should have got would have given a win] Apoint win or loss is neither here nor there. Shocking off the ball incidents by Tyrone. [Pat Spillane was right]. Very difficult to play against this type of carry on. Coldrick was shocking. Serious disrupting by Tyrone players and officials. Missed Sean o Sé badly Kick outs still dodgy Midfield weak We surely learned a few lessons today but I hope these will stand to us, Bring on Mayo
