I rarely find myself agreeing with Spillane either but is amazing how a comment from Spillane is latched onto by people compared to comments from other pundits. The puke football comment was made in 2003 and not only did he apologise for, he also at some stage described a Kerry performance in the same manner. Plenty of pundits have made silly comments over the years but none of them have entered the lexicon the way that Spillanes comments have. He wasn't wrong about the puke football either once teams realised that refs were going to allow 3 men plus tackling the man with the ball the likes of a Donegal 15 man defence was a logical end game. Things have improved since thankfully and I am struggling to think of a successful team in any sport at the moment who play negative stuff. Long may it last

Listening on Kerry radio. According to Ambrose and Timmy Tyrone better team so far. Will be interesting 2nd half. Perfect conditions and Tyrone need at least a draw so a great game to learn more.

Why are RK talking about Tyrone being Jack's "bogey" team - from what I recall he faced them twice in the championship as Kerry manager - lost one and won one. It was Paidi in 03, O'Shea in 08 and Keane in 21!

Disappointing result, seems like no-one had the bottle to take a shot on with the last two Kerry attacks. Sounded also like the Tyrone we know and, er, love, was out in spades. Looking forward to hearing the match reports by everyone later.
Mayo v Kerry final, should be another stiff test looking forward to it. Sounds like there's plenty for us to work on judging by Radio Kerry's take on the game.

Fair play to Monaghan by the way, but they should never have let things get that tight!!

Have we answered any of the issues we carried over from last year's championship?
Doesn't look like it. To be fair, maybe the answers aren't there with what we have.
Keeper still an issue. Midfield has disappeared for entire halves over a number of games. Spread of scores still not there when the heat is on. Clifford and O'Shea still carry the scoring burden. (some hope with Brosnan but we'll see how that plays out in summer)
Can we work a scoring opportunity when the game is there to be won or will we turn ball over stupidly? Can we dictate the pace of a tight game, working the ball through the hands?
Place us as maybe 4th in line for Sam.

Well we got a tight game and had a look at several players that are chasing spots on the championship team - disappointing to lose at home but the game meant a lot to Tyrone and very little (other than pride) for us.
We hammered these guys last year but ended the year disappointed so the key thing is what have we learnt from the encounter. Did any of the peripheral players do anything of note? Dylan seemed to be skinned for the goal, a big learning day for him. How did Joe O Connor do at midfield? Jack Savage made way at HT suggesting he was not showing much and our keeper seemed hesitant under high balls punching rather than gathering it - then again Radio Kerry's version of a game is not always what those in attendance see.
Monaghan nearly let Dublin out of jail with some very poor shooting.

I think some of that is a little harsh, we have shown an ability to win games at the death in this League already.
I raised my own fears about our Midfield disappearing last Sunday, would like to know from people there what was the story in today's second half.
Big test now next Sunday against a team that will be confident they can beat us. The performance and result should tell us a lot more about where we are at.
Remember too there was nothing really riding on today, a draw or 1 point loss was immaterial to us.

Today's game was worth 10 of last years league game against the same opponents. A blessing that Tyrone needed a result.
Terrific final day coverage by TG4 also - picking the right game - a belter - and showing snippets from other games including a tetchy end of match for Armagh and Donegal.

I think today was a learning curve, and learn we did. The things we learned today were to me as follows: 1)- Whatever about our GK situation, Shane Murphy clearly isn't the answer. Ryan will be restored as the number 1 from here in. 2)- Dylan Casey has a bit to go yet, he was absolutely roasted by McCurry all day. 3)- Kerrys strength is playing quick ball in, when we play this lethargic passing game we struggle. 4)- Burns was out of his depth.
A few points to note, Joe O'Connor I thought handled the game alot better than Jack Barry. When Joe went off we were alot slower in transition. Tony Brosnan looks a real threat and his kickpassing is of a very high standard also. Stephen O Brien was one of our best players today, he still has a big role in this team.

Donegal vs Armagh game tight but not a great spectacle though I was watching it from a distance, isolating as just over Covid so other reports might be more credible.
Amazing conditions but the teams appeared to constantly bounce off each other as opposed to an 'ebb and flow' affair, 'tetchy' someone termed it! Even Murphy had a bad wide.
Hard to know if much was learned of either team today, ah maybe spirit being a bit out of sorts didn't help mise.
As for Killarney, when Tyrone wanted to beat us they could - my worst fears are, well getting worse!
BTW did Foley pick up McShane - how did Jason get on overall? Cathal must be as hard to mark as our own David, unmarkable really, make good backs look like also-rans, literally - McShane's big angular strides, Clifford just just drives straight at his man, a defender can only trying to limit them, damage limitation it is.
As an afterthought, just like Donegal saved fuel against us so they would be at their best vs Tyrone a week later, it looks like Monaghan did the same vs Lillie Whites last week so they could do likewise to Dubs, and that they did. Still all wins are worth the same so maybe not - but turnaround by Monaghan is astounding, bearing in mind I didn't see today's game, assuming Dubs were 'as good' as they were vs Donegal.

I wouldn't panic too much. We haven't really learned yet how to deal with Tyrone, but with Sean O'Shea there we would have won. Given the players we didn't have today we look closer than we might think to beating a Tyrone team that had to avoid a loss at all costs. All in all, I think I'm happy enough with how Kerry played and the test will stand to them. Win everything and you don't know what you're doing wrong. We know now and hopefully will be better for it.

Happy enough after the day, big test next weekend.

I know it was a nothing game in the grand scheme of things but that was dispiriting and infuriating at the same time to watch. Why, when Tony Brosnan and Clifford had the beating of their men were we so slow and ponderous to give it in to them? Why did we persist with the short kick out, has Jack not seen Tyrone play….. ever? Anyway, need to get over for next week

Very enjoyable game but also some frustration at the Kerry team.
We have no midfield. I'd love to know how many primary possessions we won in midfield in the entire league. I'd be surprised if it was more than 5. Diarmuid Ó Connor For all his promise tends to go hiding. No midfield is a double edged sword as our keeper has to go short each time which means you have to build from the back and play into a blanket when you you eventually cross half way. Ryan looks to go short each time and will only go long when there are no short options. Murphy at least looks to go long first.
Why wasn't Dylan Casey moved from McCurry earlier. Other than that I wouldn't be too critical of the backs.
In the forwards, the inside line did well given the lask of space (self imposed due to no midfield ball winners). I felt Clifford's shot off the right was a turning point. Tyrone came back with 2 frees after that. Our half forward line OK but Ó Shea and Clifford didn't start.
Thought the referee was cat. Tyrone deserved to win just about but it's hard to have any respect for them given their "tactics" over recent years and again today and I'm not talking about having 15 behind the ball when not in possession.

I did nt see the game but I'm not too upset. I do T like losing at home but in a perverse way I'm glad we brought down to earth before championship begins. I have been very happy with our league form and defense but never bought into the Pat Spillane theory of stopping goals as other teams have gad plenty of goal chances against us. Also it might drive us and Jack on. I felt both Kildare and Mayo were better than us during our league games and we were well beaten midfield lots of days including Donegal. I was not a fan of Jack's appointment as I think he has gone very conservative but if we win Sam then I will be happy. While our defense has improved no end our forwards gave list alot of scoring power. We criticised (PK and rightly so) for picking two non scoring half forwards v Cork in 2020 but Jack has been given a free pass with same type system. In 2019 we threw away a league title v Mayo so hopefully next week we atone for that. I know Mayo have no fear of Kerry anymore and funny enough it's because they reckon we don't win tight games like today. I know the championship is the holy grail and without it this year Jack's appointment has been a fairure imo but we should be going all out to win the league next Sunday. According to radio Shane Murphy showed lack of courage punching a needless ball today instead of catching. I actually saw Donegals keeper Patton do same thing and cost them a goal. I think Kildare are very unlucky to be relegated as they should ve beaten both us and Tyrone. Back to reality now and that's not a bad. On Jack v Tyrone. Its true he has only met them twice in championship but met a good few league games. While it's easy criticise after a loss I think Jack talking out both sides of his mouth. He portrays himself as an attacking manager tyring to win with style but he got defensive with Kerry and was ultra defensive with Kildare and was delighted to only lose to Dublin by 8 points last year.

Hopefully pundits and commentators on here can stop this crap talk of David Moran only coming on for 15 mins to see out the game. Midfield we have been terrible every single league game so far. David Moran is our best midfielder and arguably the best in Ireland still. He’s only 33 and has adapted his game very well in last few years. Look at semi against Tyrone last year, he basically played as Quarterback. The box to box David is probably gone but we still need David’s nous and football intelligence and superior fielding. He needs to play from minute 1 to minute 70. Our current midfield is not up to it although Diarmaid o Connor will work well with Moran.

Agree I think we need David. Also I'm not sure Diarmuid able to give a 70 min performance from midfield. I think he is class and I would definately start him but maybe as a galf forward. Also he can score and would improve our forward scoring ratio.

There's a thin line between giving a new player experience/testing him out and hanging him out to draw and possibly ruining his confidence. It was unfair to leave Casey on McCurry for so long but hopefully he will learn from it.
On a plus side, in the 2019 semi final Jason Foley had a torrid afternoon, albeit aided and abetted by the dodgy Tyrone water, on McShane. That day he got shown the curly finger. Today Jason continued his upward curve by destroying McShane.
We are still none the wiser on who the best option for goals is. Murphy had a few poor moments today. It will probably cost us later in the year.
We badly need David Moran in midfield.
Coldrick is supposed to be one of the most experienced refs out there but he fell for every trick in the Tyrone book today. A rule was brought in a few years ago where play couldn't be stopped unless it was a head injury. The physio must have ran in 20 times during the game and Coldrick stopped play for most of them. Notice how a fella was down inside the D after the penalty was awarded. Coldrick officials also missed a straight ref for McCurry.
Kerry ended the first half well and surely were bursting to get back out in the 2nd half. But we had to wait. And wait. And wait. And wait to hear the life story of every one of the East Kerry 1979 team. Well over 20 minutes the half time team commemoration went on. That man should never again be given a microphone.

Think Jack is learning that it's a tough gig..we haven't got a team capable of winning 3 of the next 4 All Irelands but we could snap 1 or 2 maybe...were on a par at best with the main teams but not superior to them..it'd be down to the day ..but therell be a pleasure in earning an All Ireland if we manage to do it

Today was a good exercise, against a near strength Tyrone team, who were well worth their win, fighting for div survival. We were down a few for sure, but no harm learning without the full deck, fresher for next weeks final.
We were under pressure in the first half as Tyrone conceded kick out and pulled everyone behind the ball, I think we did some good stuff we’re patient, paid off in our goal , good ball by savage to geaney off loaded to Joe o con, who layed it up for tony, it’s these kind of moves that unlock the blanket, patience the key. It was game played at championship pace, I think we did well overall, management will have learnt some more about the squad. For me, I think we play better with 2 inside, loads of talented forwards, but 3 inside sucks up the space . Looking forward to a league final, again another test for the team, who have yet to win a national title in a final, hopefully put right next Sunday.

Couldn’t understand that Casey was left on McCurry for so long - should have been switched after 20 mins & it wasn’t that we didn’t have options - Tom or Graham O’Sullivan could have been moved into him. Midfield is a worry which is contributing to the problem in goals - we , at the moment, have no option of going long - not one clean fetch today from O’Connors or Jack Barry - we need David Moran badly & probably Diarmuid O’C as a wing forward option. Tyrone have brought the levels of disruption to new depths - every collision brought the doctor or physio racing on to the pitch with full approval from Coldrick - thought he had a nightmare , 2 decisions in particular - 1) A Kerry player toe poking the ball away & being penalised & 2) the decision not to award Morley a free at the death - he was penalising the pull back all day, ignored this one & gave a free out for an alleged foul hand pass. I didn’t see the off the ball from McCurry but then neither did the linesman or umpires - strange one that.

In fairness McCurry was on fire today, I will say casey stuck to his task all day, under huge pressure, did some good things too for sure, a learning day for the kid, not sure if the knock he received off the ball from mccurry, had any impact on him. Great to see SOB put another back to back solid performance behind him.
