Do people still see Stephen o Brien as a live option for this season? Maybe not a guaranteed starter but I've time for him. When a game's gone stale and we're making no headway up front, he's a player who can give you something different; drop the shoulder and break the line. Definitely have him around the place. Impact sub for me, Needs to lift the head a bit more and let it off when the opportunity arises.

He needs to find some form. Last year he provided very little in an attacking sense and in the 2 McGrath Cup games he played there wasn’t much of an improvement. I think it’s between himself and Moynihan for a wing forward position and Moynihan is clearly ahead of him at the moment in that battle.
I was in the Moran is a guaranteed starter camp but I’m not as sure after Diarmuid O’Connor’s performance the last night as well as our midfield set up. I thought having one midfielder playing a defensive role filling in for any back who joins the attack (Barry), one midfielder to be our main man around the middle (O’Connor), and one midfielder to work like a dog around the middle getting in tackles and being a nuisance (Spillane) worked very well and gave a great balance to the team. I think 3 across the middle all with different roles is the way forward especially since starting with only 2 inside forwards works better than starting with 3. It’ll be interesting to see if the personnel in those roles stays the same or if either Moran or Joe O’Connor can come in ahead of one of them. The defensive role would potentially suit Okunbor too but without a few league games it’s unlikely he’ll really be in contention for that role. Diarmuid O’Connor is the only certain starter I would say of the midfielders.

It's probably his last year so let's use that experience wisely.

any news on whether Michael Murphy will be playing. I haven't heard a word but what worked for us vs Dgal in '14 AI final worked here in the county final this year, intriguing, maybe both will try it - now that's a bit of game theory for you! I'd sense Dgal will see this as a big skelp and using the respective Kildare games as a benchmark has us within reach, a massive motivation to go all out and it would give them serious momentum going forward. Still who wants to be in the shake up of The League with the Championship starting so soon? A bit like us they have a stable enough panel of about 20 so maybe the respective selections will tell us what the agendas are. A winning team is a winning team though and I can't wait to see them go at each other and may the best team win. People up here have a new lease of life like never before so it will be all-system-go.

Yeah I liked the look of that setup aswell and there is a bit of competition there with Moran,Joe o connor, potentially okunbar(unlikely this year) , Spillane, Barry and Diarmuid all viable options. Having a workhorse like spillane in there reduces the workload of the rest of the forwards. On o brien he adds something different to the rest of them pace so important in breaking lines these days not sure if he is still a starter but definitely in the panel. Furthermore it allows our defenders to attack more as there is a bit of cover with barry/Moran who can sit in a bit when white, beaglaoich or Tom Sullivan decide to fly forward it could be very potent if we start to use our strike runners better and with a thrid hard tackling mf we have more chance of turnovers before opposition make it to our 45.

I would agree with regard the current options around MF, we have some great options, it will be all about having the horses for courses and willingness to change it up when not happening, a failing of previous management to react quickly. I do think the current management have more fair in their squad and are not afraid to use it.
Looking forward to the next few league games as teams start to tune in ahead of imminent championship, some good tests ahead.

I agree that there needs to be an 'offensive' and 'defensive' thrust to the midfield. DM did the defensive aspect very well v Tyrone last year but there wasnt much in the way of attacking midfielder..till Diarmaid came on in the 59th minute and he probably wasnt fully right or certainly not match fit as they say and he came on for SOB.
In the 59th minute they also brought on TW for Moran and and Adrian for Geaney.
looking back on it now it all looks chaotic.

This Excatly, not changing what we are about entirely as in we should always play our own game as much as possible but personnel that would work best against a Tyrone versus a mayo lets say.

I don't think he is going to change at this stage. 2019 he was exceptional and probably our best forward until the final in fairness to the man his display against Tyrone in particular was fantastic. Similar player to Darren o Sullivan in that regard but he is different to all the other options we have. I think he is a brilliant option for last 20 mins on a tired defender and can create havoc win frees etc. I'd like to see someone else younger with similar attributes around aswell Tomas o se maybe?

Eamonn Sweeney had an article on Monday about Kilkenny. Below is an extract that resonated with me in thinking about 3 or 4 Kerry footballers who are there a few years now and dont seem to be going to the next level.
Its a concern.
His main point was that KK fecked up bigtime is not bringing in Shefflin
But, let’s be honest, Kilkenny are going nowhere.
Every year begins with talk about transition and a rebuilding process which might, you’d never know, put the county back on top. Lots of players are blooded and do OK without ever suggesting they’re the long-term answer to Kilkenny’s problems.
The attacking quartet of Richie Leahy, John Donnelly, Billy Ryan and Martin Keoghan, who all played yesterday, have been on the scene since 2018 when a young side’s National League final victory suggested great things might be in the offing.
Four years on it feels like they’re still auditioning for a permanent place. They’re good players who haven’t taken the anticipated steps forward. Yesterday against Tipperary they scored a grand total of two points from play between them. It feels like all of these players have the capacity to make a bigger contribution given the right circumstances. The problem is that Kilkenny are not really a team in transition. They’re a team in stagnation.

People talk about breaking the lines but he’s too easy to shepherd down a dead end and he’s weak off his bad side.

He has all the physical attributes to be a bully around the middle but is too nice

Any word on our injured players lads? I heard in the stand against dublin that Okunbars shoulder dislocation wasnt as bad as first feared, is there such a thing as a good shoulder dislocation?
Any1 want to take a guess at our starting team for Sunday?

The stats tell is that Kerry have stopped conceding goals but they were lucky not to concede 3 v Dublin. Apart from the disallowed goal dublin were clean through on two occasions.
What i am asking is whether there is any sign of Tallys imprint in the defense set up so far?

Any1 want to take a guess at our starting team for Sunday? Well K’boy1, assuming White is available, if I had my selectors hat on, this is the XV jerseys I would hand out, we need to look at other options and with no disrespect to the lads that have started previously, I’d give game time to other panel members, We need to give all panel members a run out. Personally, I’d start, Ryan, Casey, Foley, O’Sullivan, O’Beaglaoich, Breen, White, O’Connor, Barry, Spillane, Seanie, Dara, DC, Killian and Paudie. Depending on how game is going,, a combination of O’Donoghue, Graham, Morley and Crowley in defence, Geaney, O’Brien and Brosnan up front to see out game. However, realistically speaking, Jack makes very few changes, I can see the same XV starting as Dublin with the exception of Ryan in goals and depending on the fitness of DC after his midweek exploits, Killian or Brosnan may start in his place, other than that, more or less the same XV as Dublin.

What i am asking is whether there is any sign of Tallys imprint in the defense set up so far? I've not seen any major change in how Kerry players defend individually since the games I was at last year. It's a fairly standard defensive formation, centre back drops off and covers the full back line, midfielder drops in, 'other side' wing back drops in. Usually when Kerry have slowed up the opponents play, we have 8 or 9 inside our 45, 1 or 2 inside their 45 and the others between the 65s. Goalkeeper, full back line, half forward line and MF is Moran doesn't return are the areas that opponents will look to exploit as our weaknesses when it comes to the cruch IMO. Jack has gone about addressing the keeper, we'll see as the league goes on about the other areas.

Maybe worse if Henry gives 'em a hiding after he not moving on and looking at Tribes vs Treaty that is looking likely, they got inside Gearoid Hegarty's skin and drove him to distraction, and it is so hard to distract a Hegarty - Nec flectitur nec mutant, neither bend nor change. Then wan day wan of us was on a collision course with a hoor of Nolumos Mutari, an auld shagger in a dark cloak that 'didn't want to change', 'Twas a fine line, but didn't I change his mind and he gave the government €1.5m change - fact, a good egg I am. Ah we'll concentrate on football for now all I know is that Niall O'Donnell has come on leaps and bounds over the winter, shows up everywhere and anywhere - spatial intelligence they call it, brick-*-house combined with silky skills, wins ball - loves winning dirty ball, interlinks, finishes - flawless really, heart, rallies the troops, team player - a joy to watch, you'll end up keeping one eye on him as you know he will never be far off the line of the ball, shaping up to be as hard to mark as Murphy IMO, was worth the gate money alone in County Final, that traditional skilled hoor of a footballer type as John B would say, anyone between two minds of travelling get on the wollies and slip in the hip flask!

Anyone with even a passing interest in hurling will know that Gearoid Hegarty has crossed the line badly a few times over the past two years. He is a marked man now with refs and rightly so.
Anyway, back to the point that Eamon Sweeney makes about KK....are there a few on the Kerry side that havent gone to the next level even though they have been on the panel 3 or 4 years?

So that’s the crop that came in in 2018 under Fitzmaurice and three or four others who came in in 2019. You’re looking at Shane Ryan, Jason Foley, Tom O’Sullivan, Gavin White, Gavin Crowley, Diarmuid O’Connor, Dara Moynihan, Sean O’Shea, Killian Spillane and David Clifford. 5 of them I would class as our best players now along with Paudie. 3 others are likely starters and very good players but not top class as of now, as we would have hoped for when they came in. The remaining 2 are strong subs. It’s difficult to answer your question though, if we’re talking of a starting All Ireland winning level I do think a lot of them are at that level which is positive but of course they have to go out and do it.

Didn't some Dublin player get one in the O'Byrne Cup but was still eligible for the league? - maybe banned for an O'Byrne Cup game next year. I'd imagine this is the same.
