Derry were setup perfectly to play against us, they knew how to restrict our scoring and how to open up us. did they? we scored 1-17. had 3 or 4 shocking bad wides. missed a 1 on 1 goal chance in first 2 minutes. we created more scoring chances in this game, than against Tyrone i would say. Derry had 14 behind the ball for most of the game, i wouldnt call that anything spectacular.

I am merely pointing out that large numbers back quickly and counter attack, its nothing new. and we created alot of chances.

We'll very rarely play against a team who'd have an ambition of winning the match that won't defend with 14/15 inside their 45. That's just the fitness levels that I/C players are at. That's admirable in my view, but what was even more admirable was the way Derry attacked. They threw the sink out with the water. They lost the match but I'm so impressed with the balls they showed in going for us. Very few teams are that brave.

There was an awful lot more to Derry than that, especially in the first half where they picked our awful Kickout press apart, forced Morley to go man to man and attacked us 1 on 1 with great success. Once we gave up on the press at the start of the second half we regained control of the game before pressing up on tired Derry backline to finish them off. We have to drop off the Dublin Kickout the next day or Cluxton will kill us. 2 footpasses opens us up and I think we didn't respect Derry's kicking game the last day to our detriment.

Micheál Burns was totally unmarked and had a good opportunity for a goal in one of the last plays that was pointed too. Yes indeed. That was one liitle problem I had with our finish.we could have kept ball the last day and ran down the clock but we gave Derry another chance by not doing so.However tbf Brosnan had to go for the score but he fluffed it.Alls well that ends well though.Yes we might have goaled for Cliffords last point but in hindsight he probably took the right decision. Hate to nitpick but Brosnan’s decision to shoot off his weak foot was unforgivable- he had open field, Graham on his right screaming for the ball & Tom Sull running to his left - it should have certainly been a score & a goal was in the making - don’t think many other of our forwards would have spurned that chance.

The obsession with refs when we win is just insane. there was 4 or 5 huge calls against Kerry yesterday yet Dublin Joe was in our favour apparently. Clifford one on one with an empty goal having his jersey pulled and he gave a free out. look at the black card - which derry scored 5 points during and gave them fierce momentum. it was neither a deliberate pull down or a trip nor was it cyncical foul, it looked like a complete accident. the clifford shoulder and yellow was a free out. Derry almost got a goal second half when Mckinless took about 10 steps. jersey pulling on clifford all day considering all the reffing incidents this year, the gaa need to stamp down on managers and pundits publicly as there wont be any refs left. Dublin Joe did us no favours yesterday yet youd swear that was the only reason we won. Northern boys always blame the ref, Sure most counties are northern to Kerry

As a coach I would never discourage a player for going for it if it is the right thing to do.

I have been a Tony Brosnan fan for years but he repeatedly takes the wrong option or fluffs keys scoring opportunities at county level. It’s a big concern with PG not scoring freely (although working very hard) and Killian injured. what’s his story for the final?

Need Killian back for the final, can score and links play up well. P Geaney is easily marked now. T Brosnan needs to quit his fancy dan act,has talent to burn but he is wasting it. He has been on the scene for 3 years now but still cannot nail down a regular place. Ideally he would be in ahead of P Geaney but Jack doesn't trust him I think. He did well against Tyrone when he knuckled down and did the basics well. Donal Down is a better option than Brosnan.

M Burns did well when he came on, he is now looking up more & sizing up his options. His kick passing was sharp enough. Jack Barry I worry about as he was anonymous for most of the game again on sunday. When D ' Connor was black carded Derry ran amok in midfield. P Geaney, P Murphy, J Barry & D Moynihan are our weak links.

It would have led to a goal if it had come off but was also the wrong decision IMHO.

And let JB be anonymous as long as he keeps Fenton the same like in the past.

Would Tony be better starting and Paul to come on later ? The only change I see is OBeaghlaoich for Murphy. Paul needs a big game though because he had a poor final by his standards last year and with the exception of the Mayo game hasn't reached his potential.

If there was one man I wanted on to win a short kickout in tight space, squirm out between 3 or 4 men and distribute it well it’s him. What a player. Our best reader of the game

Some game of ball Sunday lads, a joy to be there watching greatness. That's both Clifford and SoS.
Few things that seem to have gone under the radar for me from Sunday.
1. The wind, that was a 3 point wind in the first half. Wind into the hill was swirling which lead to majority of wides from both sides in each half.
2. Black card. For all that Derry did right we were neck and neck up to that point. They pulled away by 3 points in those 10 minutes with a very favourable wind to help them. With that in mind I was very relaxed at half time.
3. SoS second half performance was as every bit as good as Clifford. His finger prints were over everything in the second half. Work rate was off the charts and tackled and harried the whole way through with ridiculous skill to match.
4. O Brien & Ryan getting plenty of praise and rightly so but DoC, Barry, Begley and especially White had massive games too.
Though I would have some concerns too from Sunday and this season to date.
1. Neither Geaney/ Brosnan nor Dara/ Burns had an 8/10 performance all season between them. Both positions turning out 7/10 performances at best. Only saving grace here is they rarely have a 6/10 performance and when one replaces the other, there is no real drop off in levels. Foley, Graham, Morley, ToS all have another level in them and have shown it over the last 2 years. Geaney, Brosnan, Dara and Burns don't seem to have it and this is a major weakness.
2. Paul Murphy is a fine footballer but physically he gets found out too often. Was repeatedly targeted in the first half Sunday. Great to have in with 20 to go last year when bodies are tired and he can display his skills and experience. May need Begley to start the final.
3. Lack of options in midfield. Barry was replaced on the 60th minute in most games last year by Joe o Connor. Don't have that option this year to drive us on, but luckily neither do the Dubs.
Still think we are better than the Dubs though and expect us to win simply because I can't see us losing with Clifford and Seanie in the team right now.

Well, the dust has well and truly settled on last Sunday’s clash, to be fair to Derry, they gave us enough of it and hood winked Jack and co with the tactics. All here and most media that was penned in advance expected a dour defensive display, but must give serious credit to Derry, they came with an attacking plan that caught us unawares. The ploy of Lynch as an additional outfielder, enabled them to create an overlap, they specifically targeted our right side of defence and Rogers really benefited from the 2 v 1 situation.
In fairness to Jack, they regrouped, and the introduction of O’Brien was telling, within five minutes he had three turnovers and was heavily involved. The difference I think was down to belief, did Derry actually believe they could win down the straight or did Kerry doubt they would lose. Our bench was telling, that and our key men stood up. Few pages back, one posted alluded to the play of Graham, at the moment, I think he is key to our play and agree that he is very much underrated.
The areas we broke down on, last Sunday, in particular the fly keeper overlap, will not be replicated by Dublin, they may try exploit the same areas but with the players they have outside, but that’s for another thread. Sunday, I think Sunday copper fastened for me, we have no midfielder on the bench. Barry Dan, who I am a fan of is an above average club player, but not tailored to the standard required for Croker… Shane Ryan too for me has kicked on a notch, arguably the best all round keeper in Ireland at present, for shot stopping, kickouts, high ball and as a launch pad, or attacking fly keeper…. It’s in latter category that he clips the Clux in my opinion.

Any keeper worth his salt comes and take ball and man and doesn't leave himself open to being hurt. If he went in meekly and lost the ball what would we be saying ? "but GAA, from what I know, doesn't legislate for this". And that is the point, forget about other sports. That should be the end of the discussion. If you do want to liken it to another sport it's like two committed soccer players jumping for a header when there's only going to be one winner and the other gets clattered - (a) it rarely ever happens (b) just because the outcome is bad doesn't make it a foul It was mentioned that if this was another game (rugby) that Ryan would be penalised and carded. Actually it would be more likely that the player on the ground would be penalised for taking a player out in the air. If he'd not turned it's quiet likely that he'd have tumbled over the player head first.
