Ah easy mistake, I do harp on a bit about Barry Mahoney, I've watched him since about U16 level I suppose he first came to my attention, he was a man amongst boys from then to Minor. Even though he was Diarmuid's midfield partner for one Minor win in Croker, I think he is too slight in stature for a midfield berth, I don't know is he county standard but he is an above average club man and could be chipped maybe as a rough diamond- either way he has his chance to shine now so ball like a lot of yesterday's troops is their court. I know one thing for sure if Jack deems Barry surplus to requirements for the football squad, Stephen Moloumphy, the Kerry hurling manager would take him in the morning. Barry is a serious serious hurler. So is Donal O Sullivan Down.

there are a good few fringe players on Jack's panel that would be of huge benefit to the hurling squad, Barry Mahoney, Barry O'Sullivan and Donal Down O'Sullivan are all fairly gobby with a hurley.

Everybody needs to relax it’s thf McGrath cup Cork had a strong team out Kerry had a very experimental team out Giving youth a run . They have to give theses players a look and games that’s what the McGrath cup is for I don’t think Jack will be too worried the first week of January I’m sure he’ll try more players out in the next game . well said on the relax front, it is just the mcgrath cup

Ah wise up - this exercise was just a hint for the aspiring as to what it takes. their response will be to really push on, push those ahead until there is nobody ahead!
Fit 'n' fill 'em, only so few can, some thinking better than ....
McGrath doesn't suit us, what with all the county competitions and then that we still have prominent players involved in national competitions with their clubs.
Jack saw his chance and took it so well done, tightened things up, filter out the illusionists - at least the illusions anyway, show laddos there is a steep climb after you get onto the panel,
There will be some slagging in training when the heat is on - ah sure aren't you're great, didn't you really put it up to that mighty Div 2 team in January; red rag to a bull and you ran the other way!

I take everything that has been said by both sides of the coin about last night and I was in Tralee three years ago when Cork gave us an even bigger hiding in the same fixture. The difference there was that it was the Kerry U-20s pressed into service. Almost everyone who started for us last night has played for the Kerry seniors at some point previously. This might come across as hyper critical but I believe any team going out to represent Kerry at senior level (and certainly one containing fellas looking to force their way into a League or Championship panel) should be competent enough to not look like a group of ten year olds being barraged aside by adult players running through on goal. That's the reality of what happened multiple times last night and John Cleary was right to say afterwards his crew could have buried 9 or 10 goals if they felt like it. These lads have played football for years surely they have a bit of muscle memory as regards defending? I've no problem with a Kerry team being beaten at this time of the year but last night was boarding on the incompetent and for me that's unforgivable whatever the context, most especially when you are the AI champions and every other county is licking its lips at your crown. calm down, because there could be a few more bad days before Jack and the lads come to the boil early summer

Nobody is going to get too worried in January but it's a forum to express your views. I'm just grumpy anyway after weeks of illness.. maybe I should have abstained from commenting.

If we lost to Cork playing croquet I'd be pissed off. And I maintain letting any Cork team waltz in for 5 goals against us is not something to be dismissing out of hand.

Article today online the Kerryman/Independent by Paul Brennan
Kerry manager Jack O’Connor says defeat to Cork was ‘a good reality check for our fellas’
Jack O’Connor is a natural born winner, but this was a loss – even a 12-point one to Cork – that the Kerry manager was ably to wear lightly on his shoulders.
There was a time when such a defeat would have O’Connor’s brow deeply furrowed, even on January 4, but that was then and this is now. Speaking on Monday, O’Connor agreed that the All-Ireland champions will have a bigger than usual target on their backs this year, and a strong Cork team certainly took aim in Pairc Ui Rinn on Wednesday evening and hit the bullseye.
Four days into the new year and Kerry have already conceded nearly twice as many goals (five) as the three they gave up all the way through 2022, when they were breached just three times. O’Connor admitted it might have been eight or nine, but context is everything, so the Kerry manager was in sanguine mood after what is a chastening defeat on the scoreboard.
"We take more or less from it what we were expecting deep down. You can’t expect fellas… we had two training sessions basically, I’m sure Cork now have a good few more than two training sessions done,” O’Connor offered as a general thought on what unfolded.
“It is a good reality check for our fellas, and it is good to get it so early. It gives our fellas some context and shows how much work they have to do if they didn’t believe it already. No issue, Cork were good, they played well, very fit for this time of year.
“I though the first ten or fifteen minutes we were okay. We conceded a very bad goal and Cork just had the legs on us all over the pitch. They were creating overlaps. They got five goal, they could easily have got eight or nine.”
"And then we had a bit of a mixum gatherum of a team where we were mixing and matching and trying a few new lads so, yeah, it was what it was.”
It cannot be overlooked that Kerry were missing a lot of the leading lights. The absence of names like Gavin White, Brian Ó Beaglaoich, David Moran, Stephen O’Brien, Paul Geaney, Sean O’Shea and the Clifford brothers certainly gives context to the game, especially when one considers that John Clearly had as close to a full strength squad as any manager could hope for at this time of year.
But the game was clearly about who was available and playing, with Kerry handing senior debuts to James McCarthy, Ruairí Murphy, and Barry Mahony, while Barry O’Sullivan is effectively a newcomer too, having earned a recall on the back of a super county championship with Dingle.
“They did fine,” O’Connor said of the new men. “There were a lot of lads malfunctioning around them so I wouldn’t blame the new lads at all. We’ve another game next Sunday and after that we’ll begin proper preparation for the League. We don’t have a huge amount of time, is it three weeks from next Sunday, so it’s a reality check. We just didn't have the legs to compete with Cork there tonight and sure when you don’t have legs gaps open up all over the place.
Look the game served its purpose. It gave us a bit of context about where we are and how much we have to do and that’s all we wanted to get out of the night really.”
Meanwhile, Cork manager John Cleary was more concerned with what the win might simply do for the confidence of his players rather than focusing on the scoreline or the nitty-gritty of the game itself.
“Cork hasn’t had an awful lot of success over the years. You get success if you have confidence. You get confidence if you are winning games. If you go home beaten, you are always doubting and looking behind you and wondering what is going wrong. The day you win there is more going right than wrong, and that is what happened tonight,” was the Castlehaven man’s assessment of as good night for him in his first game as Cork manager, having acted as interim boss for much of last year.
“Definitely we want to hit the ground running this year. We went down to Kerry last year in the McGrath Cup final and they hammered us off the field. They built momentum from there. We are learning from that, and hopefully might be able to do the same and build a bit of momentum over the coming weeks and see where it takes us.
“The team played well as a unit at times and they defended well as a unit. I was pleased with the way we moved the ball, the inter-passing. It wasn’t all perfect or anything like that.
“We’ll have a lot bigger tests than what happened tonight. Our League is going to be very, very tough. We have Meath, Kildare, and Dublin at the beginning of the League. This is just preparation for that.”

The goal after Shane's rolled short kick out was his fault.

The goal after Shane's rolled short kick out was his fault. I disagree. He got the kickout to the defender who hesitated and lost the ball. I blame the defender for that one. I'm not trying to promote Murphy and I was always in the Shane Ryan camp but I don't like him being blamed on the wrong either. It was Jason Foley. It was an awful pass to give him, slow and along the ground. He had 2 Cork forwards right on top of him straight away. A terrible decision by Murphy and 100% his fault. He didn’t cover himself in glory for the first goal either. Was there really any need for the dramatic dive with Foley in front of him?

Of course Shane should have known that Foley was going to stop the ball and just stood there, it's all about mind reading now. I'm sure if Foley had not stopped it and Shane just stood there you would be laying all the blame at the feet of Foley. 😜

The kickout was slow but if you watch it Jason had time to hold ball and get it to free man. I'm a big fan of Foley. I actually think he was Kerry s best player last year but no player should be free from blame and to say Murphy was 100% percent wrong for the goal is giving Jason a free pass. Even if Shane s kick was poor Jason erred also. As I ve stated I only saw 5 mínutes but from what I saw our defense were breached far too easy and Murphy becomes the fall guy unfairly. I prefer Ryan but it's easy to blame Murphy. Cork could have scored more due to our inept defence on the night. Foley possibly could have done better alright but the blame still has to primarily lay with Murphy, there was no need to put a teammate under that amount of pressure. It was clearly the wrong decision on his part. I actually rate Murphy and do think he’s the 2nd best keeper in the county but he had a bad day at the office.

All the talk in the lead up to last year's final wasn't about Walsh it was about Damian Comer and how it was his consistency was the spearhead or focal of Galways attack.
Jason Foley totally blotted put the big full forward, so we scraped through, if Comer even got a couple of points the result could have been far differant story.
But as good as Foley was, his corner man beside him was eminence and had a direct hand in six scores.
To butt in on the conversation above , if a player isn't going to make the XV should the second position be given to a younger player to stake a claim, I know this will light the fuse, but the Crokes man isn't going to overtake Shane Ryan, and that's my opinion and Jack's going on a few years of ball, not just Wednesday. Should younger players like Burns, Kelliher or Fitzgibbon be front runners now looking ahead not at the past or current stagnant level?

Do you really think Foley was Kerry’s best player last year? Yes I do but the forwards get more notice because of scores. David was brilliant but was very quiet v Cork. Jason was excellent during the league in every game marking the top forwards. Also in the championship he was outstanding in every game shutting out the best of them. I have stated this before that IMO Jason was Kerry s top player last year. Fair enough, Jason had a great year but in my view, David was by a fair distance much better than Jason last year.

Judging on a McGrath cup opener - ah jazus giv us a break! Here's an attempt at something interesting for those who saw more games that others - can anyone flesh out how Tally might have helped Jason, bearing in mind he was on an upward curve anyway, i.e. what was Foley doing differently in '23? Comer in the final was much to do with team tactics (Morley) and Galway's inability to resort to Plan B. Still that's only based on my own TV view and limited at-the-game-time but from what I saw live of Comer here vs Donegal I'd say there is more to it than that as he was absolutely awesome - unmarkable, he has, well had, it all. He didn't just have an off day himself in the AI final - that's how unsure I am of my take on it? Also v hard to understand Foley just from TV as much of the defenders work is positional, bclocking avenues, how quick they interchange with comrades to kill ball, etc.

Kerry Team to Play Clare:
1) Shane Murphy 2) Dylan Casey 3) Jason Foley 4) Tom O'Sullivan 5) Mike Breen 6) Tadgh Morley 7) James McCarthy 8) Diarmuid O’Connor 9) Jack Barry 10) Dara Moynihan 11) Micheál Burns 12) Adrian Spillane 13) Tony Brosnan 14) Eddie Horan 15) Killian Spillane
A good bit more experience in that team compared to the last day vs Cork. Especially in the defence. Good to see Eddie Horan getting a chance also and Mike Breen getting a start. Personally would like to have seen Devon Burns getting a chance, especially with the possibility of Shane Ryan needing shoulder surgery. I expect a Kerry win tomorrow to finish the McGrath Cup on a positive.

A lot more solid looking XV and being the last 'competitive' game before the national league, I see the necessity for same.
I thought Ronan Buckley would have secured a starting berth for this one. I actually expected he and Burns to be named.
Hopefully both will get game time

I’m confused by Dan O’Donoghue’s positioning in the pecking order, I thought since he was going so well last year until his injury that he’d definitely be starting all these games. I’m delighted to see Eddie Horan given his chance, I think he’s a very good prospect. I hope Ruairi Murphy and Barry Mahony get a good amount of game time from the bench.

what is our plan\back up for the full back and centre back position come the championship if Jason or Tadgh get injured?
are we a bit vulnerable in that respect?

Yes, agree regarding Dan, he had a firm hold of the one defender jersey up for grabs last year until he got in the league game up north.
Is there any defenders spot up for grabs this year, if the six incumbents retain the 2022 form, it's hard to see Donoghue, Breen or Casey dislodging - still challenging for jerseys is good for team evolution, I can see challengers in mid field and in the forwards, just on current form not in defence. I suppose the forward changes may be more about age and mileage than form.

Full back I envisage Graham would be the primary back up with may be Dylan, centre back I take it Breen. Then again, if Foley gets a knock would Tadgh fall back in a temporary measure. I previouslt thought Stefan Okunbor may be an option for both positions, i suppose time will tell.
