A few points. Mark O Connor played in the U21 championship last week so I dont think he is injured. We need to decent Cork team to drive us on - yesterday proved that. I hope Eamonn Fitz has something up his sleeve for the last weekend in August. There was shadow boxing about yesterday I felt. The assertion here than Steven O Brien isnt one of the top 5 corner forwards in the county is crazy. Some people here totally overrate Brendan O Sullivan. I'd be worrying about the August Bank holiday weekend first Buck, we have a number of issues that need addressing sooner rather than later. If change doesn't come you can forget about the semi's.

I'm finding it difficult to make head nor tail of the A and B side of the draw . Who are Kerry's potential QF opponents ?

Currently it would be one of Sligo, Clare, Laois, Derry, Meath, Cavan, Carlow, Galway, Roscommon. The winners of Clare v Laois, Derry v Meath, Cavan v Carlow, and Sligo will play off until there are 2 teams left to play the losers of the Connacht Final and Tipperary. Kerry would then meet one of them in the Quarter Final but can't meet Tipperary again if they happen to win their Round 4A qualifier.

I agree with that Jackiel and buck Fitzmaurice dropped Mark O'Connor to make for room for older more established players which is fine but he thinks he has four midfielders Donaghy Sheehan Maher and Moran when in fact Donaghy and Sheehan are not midfielders in my opinion their forwards. Sheehan apart from frees has nothing to offer. Mark O'Connor is a real Midfielder. He can catch it and Kick it and run with other midfielders. I dont understand it. I would worry if we meet someone like Galway in the Quarters. If we go up with that team and play like that we will lose to them. No doubt about it in my opinion. You could forget about playing Dublin then.

The world and its dog knew that Crowley wouldn't be starting yet Fitz & Co still name him at centre-back. What's to be gained from that? Even more disappointing was that they didn't try someone else there besides O'Mahony.

I watched Sheehan yesterday 3 or 4 times his man ran past him and he pulled him back. He couldn't run with him and he knew it thats why he did it and he wasn't even fast. How in the name of god can they watch him in training and think hes fit enough or good enough for midfield. Like can Sheehy or Hassett or Murphy not see it and stay this fella wont make it there. If i was a manager and saw that I would take him off and tell him youre coming off cause youre not fit enough. I dunno maybe hes burnt out and Sheehan is not the only one Donnacha Walsh could not keep up with his man either way off him again no pace. O'Mahony couldnt run. Enright Crowley and O'Beaglaoich are the only backs with any pace.

I must admit I am surprised at the level of criticism after yesterdays game. Kerry could not win yesterday. A comfortable victory (such as a 10 point win) and it was to be expected. A closer result and they would have been slaughtered anyway.
That said, there should be a few alarm bells ringing for management today.
Griffin was fine under high ball directed at Quinlivan. Playing two against one enabled him to break it away from the Tipp man. But whenever Quinlivan got it in his hand he absolutely torched Griffin as he went hunting for a goal. Not a good sign for Griffin but to balance it up Quinlivan is very good. Would he start for Kerry? I think so. (with Geaney in the corner) Impressed with Murphy, Enright and Geaney, who was excellent. Tipp wasteful in possession, movement was slow and lateral on many occasions, allowing Kerry to realign in terms of shape/tactics.
Cannot believe Kerry are still going to war with O'Mahony, Sheehan and Donaghy as starters. This has to be a ruse? Kerry would still have beaten Tipp with a lot more newbies, and if the cavalry were required they were sitting on the bench. Very shortsighted by management. Fitz has bitten the bullet with Marc O'Se it appears. He needs to do the same with O'Mahony. In fact he should have done that before dropping Marc. O'Mahony has been getting away with it in the sweeper role as he hasn't had to pick up anyone. The better teams will be rubbing their hands with glee if he's still there in August. Look at the speed of Tyrone last night, they will target the central column and just surge past him. Will Crowley come in as a straight swap when he is over the injury?
A poster above has done the permutations on who Kerry may play in the QF. All opposition look eminently beatable. Is there a chance you go into the SF undercooked, and undecided on the best 15? A tricky place to be.

We have been injecting him with horse placenta and he is flying around the pitch in training- we are a crafty bunch in Kerry.

Disappointing day for a Tipp man. No I did't expect to travel to Killarney and come away with a win but I thought we would run Kerry for 50 mins or so. Truth is the game was over in 25 mins. Acheson got a hefty shoulder early in the game and without his influence we seemed rutherless. I am not going to be critical of our lad's efforts. For me they played close to their abilities. We didn't get enough quality ball into Quinlivan who was roasting Griffin. Our kickouts were killing us also. Hopefully they can get back on the horse and with a decent draw may yet make the 1/4 finals. Kerry were comfortable all day and to me had a few more gears to go through with. The Kerry centre field will not be good enough later in the championship. Griffin as I said got roasted and the concession of 2-10 won't please Kerry management.I am not so sure that Kerry can beat Dublin tbh. But the best of luck to ye.
Not that it made a whole pile of difference but I thought the ref was poor. Probably appeals to Croke Park and I won't be surprised if he is whistling in September. The Kerry corner back had tripped Conor Sweeney close to half time a clear black card. On numerous occasions he failed to give a free for a push in the back yet a minute later he would award a free to the other side for the same offence. Frustrating to watch. As I say no difference to the result .

Thanks for that So by the look of it Cavan , Galway and Roscommon are the three most difficult tasks with which Kerry are likely to be faced in QF Dublin in likelihood facing one of Mayo, Tyrone , Donegal or Monaghan. Lot of guessing going on there but that's my estimation. It seems the Connacht final will in all likelihood deliver Kerry's next opponents.

When you win a Munster Final by ten points you should come home with a spring in your step but I returned with an empty, unfulfilled feeling. Perhaps, this was due to the fact that Cork were absent, more likely it was due the question which currently envelops us. Would we pass the Dublin test? On the basis of our two championship games we are further away than last year from surmounting that obstacle. Indeed at this stage I doubt that we would pass the Tyrone,Donegal,Mayo or even the Monaghan test. We seem to be regressing. Yesterday's display was too ragged, too patchy to offer any evidence to the contrary. The painful, demoralising aspect is that we do not seem to have addressed the facets of our game which have left us in the lurch in recent times. On the other hand, maybe they have been addressed but the remedies are not to be found. All members of that Kerry defence are fine footballers. There is no doubting that. But why is it that as a collective they take on so much water? When players carry the ball into massed defences like Dublin, Donegal, Tyrone etc they are smothered and dismembered, legitimately apparently. When they run at our defence they either scythe through unmolested or we concede juvenile, sloppy frees. Is it because we do not have the physical power to stop these runners or is itt that they are not being coached on how to defend efficiently. Goodness knows it wasn't because we did not have sufficient numbers back. In the first half it was truly embarrassing to witness, at times, the entire Kerry team inside their own half against a team as limited as Tipperary. Imagine Paul Geaney, irrepressible as he was, back beyond his own midfield? Shades of Colm Cooper in last year's final. Never again I thought after that fiasco but alas not. In fairness, that travesty was less obvious in the second half. I would imagine that are very few people in this county who, at the start of the year, would nominate KD and Bryan Sheehan as our championship midfield. I bow to nobody in my admiration for KD. He has been one of the most effective and inspiring Kerry footballers that I have seen but even at his peak one would never have regarded him as intercounty midfielder. I know that EF has been compromised over injuries in this area but surely he must realise that the gallant KD is not the answer to this problem. Where to accommodate him, I am not sure. Ditto Bryan Sheehan. One wonders if he has the mobility for this position. If not, where then? Can we afford to do without those booming, long range frees? CHF? FF? Could those possible moves not have been more experimented with during the NFL? Management stand seriously indicted in the way Brendan O'Sullivan was treated during the NFL. I know that, unfortunately, he is not available now but surely he should have had a few starts during the NFL. This reluctance to expose him to more serious game time revealed an innate conservatism on the part of management which now sees the chickens coming home to roost with an over reliance on soldiers from battles fought long ago. Anthony Maher is our top midfielder. Why did he not get more game time yesterday? I simply do not know who should partner him. We continue to shortchange ourselves in the deployment of our attackers. Irrespective of the composition I feel we have the personnel to assemble an attack as good as any in the country. However, we continue to fiddle faddle with the ball out the field, we continue to allow our main scorers to wander away from the shooting gallery, we continue to make inappropriate use of the high ball- kicking it into a lone attacker surrounded by two defenders- and we continue to witness a lack of movement/running off the shoulder. Reading back over the above depresses me but we have to judge ourselves by the highest standards. The standard which would enable us to win the All-Ireland, That is the only standard for Kerry. If yesterday's win was an end in itself then my report would be different. But it amounts to only to climbing a hill while the McGillicuddy Reeks loom in our path. Reassuring points from the game? All I will say about Paul Geaney is may God ensure that he remains injury free for the rest if the year. Shane Enright continued his top form from the Clare game after having a poor NFL. Killian Young played Peter Austin off the field, a player who has often been a menace for Kerry in the past. Mark Griffin dealt well with that immaculate footballer, Michael Quinlivan. Newcomers Tadhg Morley and Brian o'Beaglaoich, until he was discommoded by a kidney punch while setting up the goal for Paul Murphy. In the context of these two boys isn't it a shame that Brendan O'Sullivan and Alan Fitzgerald are currently injured. We desperately need the infusion of their youthful vigour. Paul Murphy? Some people are raving about , in particular, his first half display. It would be churlish to argue otherwise. However, in view of the porous nature of our defence this most notorious of pickpocket is needed back there. Brian Kelly made a miraculous save in the second half.Shortly after conceding the second goal he had a couple of dodgy kicks out. My advice for goalies after conceding a goal: go long with the next few kicksout to settle the nerves! Of course, Bryan continues to uplift those frees. P.S. I was amazed that the Munster Final was a mere postscript to the Sunday Game last night. I did not time it but it appeared to me that there was less than five minutes of actual play shown, at the end of the show no less. I am also annoyed by this planting of a camogie segment in the middle of the show. I have nothing at all against ladies football and camogie, indeed I think it is wonderful that women are catered for in the sporting sphere. I would go further and suggest that these two sports should have their own weekly programme. What I object to is being a force fed a diet of camogie. P.P.S. I had serious issues with David Gough after the Kerry/Cork NFL game. Apart from one or two weird decisions, most notably Jonathan Lyne being penalised after getting a thump in the abdomen followed up a slap in the puss for good meaure, he refereed it sensibly and fairly. Alan Kissane was equally impressive in the minor game. I think the camogie as part of TSG may be down to the fact that the sponsors of the camogie are also sponsoring the All Irel Hurling so they may be insisting on a higher profile as a result. It may be argued that the Munster Final was on 'live' and was well discussed in the afternoon whereas some of the other featured games were not. But like you veteran I was wilting by the time the 'highlights' came on...... and that was before Tomás inflicted that suit on my eyes!

Paul Murphy has to go back to the backs. We need him in the half back line. 2 O'Beagaloich 3 Griffin 4 Young 5 Murphy 6 Enright 7 Crowley. Forget about Marc and O'Mahony at 36 they are both not going to make much of a difference now at this stage. Morley Lyne Podge O'Connor and I would bring Jason Foley on the panel. Hes playing well hes young and its time for youth. A good sub to have. I would bring Mark O'Connor in midfield along with Anthony Maher. O'Brien Cooper if fit and Buckley if fit. Its a joke that Daitih Casey is not on the panel. Darren Geaney and James O'Donoghue. Donaghy Sheehan Donnacha Moran off the bench. Fitzmaurice shows loyalty to certain players. Its going to hurt himself and this team in the end. How would daithi casey improve the Kerry team ?

It's speed we are looking to introduce to the team not slow it down. I dont know about Buckley either unless its at midfield. I dont think he will move Paul Murphy or the Gooch so unless he gets in for Donnachadha or something and takes over the frees as well if sheehan is dropped. Seeing how bad we were in the last tow games i really do hope we have something up our sleeve for later in the year and dont want to show our hand. Unless its something totally radical like introducing a new pacey option at midfield and dropping one of gooch or DW for pace i dont see what difference it could make.

Any word on Colm's injury? Was it shoulder or collarbone?
Eamonn doesn't seem to be too concerned going on his post match comments.

Eamonn was quoted as saying they were waiting and seeing how he was with the nose until Sunday morning which was why he was named in the team. I don't buy into the notion about plans being worked on in secret - it's just not believable that you would not road-test what had been worked on in training in an actual competitive game.

Have you been watching him lately. Hes flying for Crokes and hes playing much better than Sheehan and much younger and faster than Donnacha Walsh plus he can jump and catch a ball a lot better than half the team and he kicks frees.

Yes he was quoted as saying that yesterday after the game. However he was also quoted last week saying that they had a clean bill of health barring the long-term absentees. Agree 100% with you about not testing specific tactics in an actual game, doesn't make sense.

The main problem in midfield is persisting, and nothing is visible to the sun burned eye that's being done about it. I agree with all views that we have no business taking on Dublin with Sheehan, as a starting midefielder, or Star. He's good footballer, beautiful ball striker, but he's simply too slow.
I thought Star did well enough yesterday but there's only one place for him and that's in the edge of the square. He doesn't have the speed - he is working hard and has a good season. If he's on form he is unamangeable in the square with good ball, if he can continue to tolerate the persistent fouling against him. He's no angel either, to counter.
I thought Aidan played very well as a sweeper yesterday, he never gets turned over, adds steel (with risk) and distributes effectively. Of course the opposition (no offence natracht) was a considerable factor in his favour. I think it's the only role he can play as he's not fast enough for 1:1. Crowley would definitely be coming back in.
Shane was excellent, all day.Tadhg Morley was very tidy with everything he had to do. I think Killian played well, and on reflection is overall underrated in the team. Another player who's polished and strong on the ball (he's physically upped it the last couple of years).
I'm not sure if folks noticed, but Griffin was torching out with the ball, offloading but rarely getting it back. I would agree with other views that these physical attributes could get more value for money further out the pitch. I don't think he's a true defender, in that he wants to play football, real defender want to defend (The Rathmore Italian Tom O'Sullivan). Where would he go?
The forwards were fine, and props to Mikey Geaney on a very tidey performance from his intro yesterday. On the Gooch if body language is anything, this is a minor issue, he skipped into the dugout, and then practically sprinted down to the clubhouse. A fella with a bould shoulder wouldn't be for that. They were taking no chances with him - so off he came.
Murph is a gem, flawless ball handling, scoring, strong tackling and some beautiful pick pocket work. Contender for name #1 on team sheet.
In general the forwards are fine, the problem is against better oppostion, the quality of service reduces and they have to come further out the pitch, and then their potency reduces. Paul Geaney flawless, loaded with confidence, great goals (beautiful basket ball hop nutmeg late in second half). Stephen was a mixed bag, he blew a great goal chance which he made, some usual over-carrying (I thought we got away with 4-5 instances of that yesterday) - but I was most impressed with was when we were having dodgy spells in the second half, balls into him were sticking under heavy pressure. Stevie was one of our better players in the league final with sh1te service. I think he is still earning his place, specifically for goal scoring chance potential.
Barry John did well, one lovely turnover near sideline that led to a score. James looks good, some more game time needed. John Lyne did well, very brave in a 40/60 smash that he won ball and free from. Surely a man who feels most hard done by out of the first 15. Donnacha ran all day as usual. Funny seeing him dragging the Tipp left half back up the pitch in second half. He was solid enough, made some mistakes. Particularly throwing up a high ball to Stephen with 2 or swarming him that led to their second goal. He's fast enough for me - he compensates in lots of other areas that would be exposed if he was out of the team, namely blocking runners and tackling.
The thorny issue - midfield. This is the losing of our season. Given we have no other experienced option at midfield, and I think Mark O'Connor is a little too young for that position personally. He needs to fill a bit. He would be targeted for heavy punishment. He's a gem in the waiting if everything stays well for him.
Of the current 5 - it has to be Moran/Maher again. I agree with another poster who said we were over-pinning hopes on Brenada O'S. He definitely suggested as a positive option, be he hasn't done the Champioinship minutes yet. He needs to get a chance when fit again mind.
The alternative is a very interesting combo of Griffin/Crowley as another poster suggested. Now you wouldn't be lobbing static kick-outs down on them. They would be breaking off the sides, or else you'd work it short until one or both come off the shoulder.
Then you have to backfill their positions vacated.I suggested Maher as a full back before, got my bawlix knocked in over it (verbally/textually speaking).
It seems an unlikely eventuality that such changes will manifest given we have a league of no such change and 2 Championship games ditto. The hope I have is that Eamonn sees the same issue. I'm meandering now so will regroup and try again later.
One thing I'm confident of though, is there isn't a hope in hell of getting beaten by any of those teams that are on our potential menu in the quarter, unless there's rat poison in the refreshments. We dismantled Roscommmon in the league and they were up to win that game. Galway are ok at best. Cavan are in parallisis afetr that rizing they got yesterday.Tyrone could have had 8-9 goals. They're done. IF we're going to be sweating a 1/4 final as a banana skin then we throw our hat at it.
SkyBlue made an interesting point - what performance (please quote exact examples) would folks have been happy with yesterday?
Monaghan would have been a nice 1/4 finalist - they've always put it up to us, play hard, defensive system, brilliant forward in McManus. Would be a test befoe Dublin

Enright Crowley and O'Beaglaoich are the only backs with any pace. It often strikes me that, of all our regulars, Walsh never seems to get any downtime. Year in, year out he plays league, championship and (most years) McGrath cup. Never seems to be out injured or taking a break for repairs. The man's a machine but surely at this stage management could be using him more judiciously, in the early part of the year anyway.

Visibly Gooch was in very little pain with it, as mentioned by the way he skipped into the dug out and ran off the pitch. The picture in the article also doesn't indicate a guy who fears his season is in jeopardy.
Let's see what the results of the scan produce anyway and we can park speculation. For that hit, he should have given the ball back to Griffin who had had sent him a give and go. Then he got crunched from the left side. Didn't even get aa free.

Always good to win but there were times Sunday when I thought I was watching an U12's game with the way the swarm of players moved up an down the pitch with the ball. On several occasions there was a lone Kerry player in the Tipp half and he was close to the 65m line. When Kery atacked, Tipp took up similar positions but not to the same extent. Getting very like basketball where the play (and players) move up and down the pitch/court. Basketball stopped play from going back over the half way line once crossed but football does not even have that. Is this the template that Fitz is working on to take on Dublin's game - pack the defence and play on the counter.

I think that our backs are made to look ragged and easy to run through when our midfielders aren't picking up their men. What's a centre back/ any back to do when they have their own man plus a marauding midfielder to deal with? Donaghy and Sheehan weren't mobile enough to deal with their men on Sunday. Tipperary's midfielders took both of them on because they knew they had them for pace. The result? Frees aplenty given away. Against a more savvy and classy team the result will be goals, especially in the wider, more open spaces of Croke park. This weakness was evident last Seotember, we were given a stern reminder of this in April. Clare and Tipperary, both division 3 teams, have again exposed this weakness.
What is most disappointing is that it seems that nothing has been done to remedy this malady. Is there some master plan in place specifically for Dublin? I think not. Has anybody with a bit of pace been tried in midfield? No. So, we are left with Star, Sheehan, Moran, Maher & Buckley. Maher is recovering from a hip operation that has taken longer than expected to heal, he will not be a realistic option. That leaves a combination of Moran & AN Other. I would love to see a runner in the middle to counteract the legs that the likes of Fenton & MDMA bring.
I would go with
Kelly
Ó Beaglaoich. Enright. Morley
Young. Crowley. Lyne
Moran. Griffin
Murphy Darran. M Geaney
S o Brien. P Geaney. J O Donoghue

I like the look of that team Misteallaigh Abú, loads of pace in it, but maybe it is a little lightweight? Thinking of the Dublin HF line, I know we are crying out for pace but they need to be powerful at the same time. This is the problem that Eamonn and his selectors face.
Your team would be able to cope with runners down the middle though if they front up physically.

Griffin Murphy Darran. M Geaney S o Brien. P Geaney. J O Donoghue The only change that I would make would be Brian Sheehan for Mikey Geaney, not alone for Sheehans frees but I thought that Mikey Geaney was poor enough when introduced the last day. In fairness to Sheehan, he's been on the go for the whole year without a break - football & people are strange as we couldnt do without him a few months ago?? I also think Griffin would be a great option around the middle. I was at the game & watched it back last night & to me its simple, we wont get to the AI final not to mind winning it if the same team plays in the next few games. Our lack of pace & age now means that were putting 13 players behind the ball & giving away lazy frees like confetti at a wedding. If this is what we have to do to adapt then were on a slippery slope as our forwards wont win games on scraps against a good team plus some of our ageing legs cant break fast enough to get up the field as often. Fair play to Aidan O Mahony & Marc O se for the years of dedicated service but were going nowhere if were still relying on these guys to win us an AI - Aidan finished well the last day when he was dropped back as a sweeper as Tipp were chasing scores but remember he was also flying in that role in the league until we met Dublin & we know what happened there. I think we have to go for youth & give it a go, if we lose were better off giving the experience to the future of Kerry football - in saying that I still think Mark O Connor,Barry O sullivan & Jason Foley are a bit too young to start but they should be on the sidelines on match day to get a feel for the whole thing. Maybe I have it all wrong & Kerry are in heavy training but I think we need to use the youth, who are proven winners, with a few middle aged guys & see how we get on - it worked ok for Micko in 1975!!!
