Sem 2-13 St Pats 2-6
Dug it out is right. 2nd goal for Pats early in the second half put 4 between them and the Sem were looking shaky. Sending off of Conor Glass for something off the ball was the turning point; he'd bossed midfield in the first half. Two superb late goals by David Clifford won the day. Clifford scored 2-5 and looks some prospect. Final scoreline was a bit flattering though. St Pats just didn't have the shooters today.
Congrats to the Sem; the start of a good weekend for Kerry teams hopefully.

Well done to the sem. Came back from 4 down with 15 mins to go to win by 7 thanks to two goals in the last 5 mins. The sending off of glass was a key turning point. absolutely. A very big call. The Sem kept themselves in it when things werent going their way and then went for the jugular when the opportunity came. Congrats to all involved not forgetting the parents and feeder clubs.

Congratulations to the Sem! Well done to all involved!
The game itself was tainted by the sending offs, and I felt sorry for both young players having to suffer the ignominy of red cards in a national final. It took a seismic shift with the sending-off of Conor Glass especially and unfortunately for him and St Pats they live forever with the what if?
However, the Sem did look the more natural finishers and at the end of the day they got 15 scores to 8 and showed tremendous spirit in adversity so they are most deserving Champions. Kudos especially to young David Clifford, what a class act!
A 3-in-row of Hogan Cups have come to the Kingdom. - the future is bright!

Great result for the Sem - as mentioned the Glass sending off was a major moment. One could be sympathetic but despite his tender years he is one of the most experienced players on the field. Playing in his third Hogan Cup final (one win, one loss) he should have known better. Something like 8 of the Sem are on the Kerry minor panel and a further three or four were overage for minor this year - strength in depth for any school to have at its disposal.

The sending off of Conor Glass is likely to have been one of the most costly in the history of the GAA.. He and his partner were wiping Sem's midfield off the face of the earth. We will never know of course but it is unlikely that the Sem would have won had he stayed on the pitch. Indeed for a while after his sending off the Sem still struggled. Ironically, it was the sending off of Daniel O'Brien which seemed to act as the catalyst. There fore they more or less dominated.
One aspect of the Sem's play which annoyed me was that they seemed to give the Derry lad's far too much room , so much so that they had time to fumble the ball often and yet retrieve it. Nevertheless when they got the whiff of victory they were gutsy and ambitious enough to go for it. Apart from some of the obvious prominent players , I was taken by their number two, ? Potts, There was something defiant and daring about him.
David Goigh was too fussy for my liking. On camera there seemed to be very little to warrant such intrusive officiating. To give two red cards in such a scenario, particularly in a colleges match, appears extreme. Of course , I was not there and perhaps awful skullduggery took place. As far as I know we will be seeing more of this man inTralee tomorrow.

It was the umpires that called the incident for the Glass sending off. No idea what happened but it must have been something serious, and clear-cut, to warrant a straight red on an umpire's call.

This umpire did.

Congrats to all at the Sem, great win, great dig out in the end when the game looked very tight for them. Some really skilful young players in their team. Looking forward to seeing some of them playing with the Kerry minors later in the year.

Congratulations to St. Brendan's, great to see them back at the top of the colleges tree and 3 on the trot for Kerry.
St. Pats looked a lot bigger and sturdier, maybe there's an age difference I'm not sure. Some of their shooting in the 2nd half was very poor, they got good possession but seemed intent on ballooning high efforts for spectacular points when a safer, lower shots might be of more use on the scoreboard. Great credit for the penalty save. The Sem keeper seems like a fine tall man but well able to move.
Great credit to the school , parents, teachers, and all the clubs involved. It is a school that seems to have been revitalised over recent years and good luck to them.

For me I thought he wasn't great he looked dangerous on the ball but the sems midfield didn't allow him have it much with he only having 5 possessions in dangerous areas of the pitch! Yes Glass getting sent of was the turning point but for me he was not influential on the game!

Sem put themselves in the position to win - they did not get it all their own way in the final but they grabbed their opportunities when they came. Glass seemed to be a lot more influential than Tommybigboots suggests and the sending off (for whatever reason) was the turning point - that is the way games go from time to time but the Sem still had to pull back the defecit and get over the line. If the story was reversed we would be rather annoyed - would like to see the ref clarify his decisions and remove the mystery to his call. Irrespective the Hogan Cup resides in Killarney for the year and well done to the Sem - now for the Kerry Minors to take up the mantle and build on this success.....

It was a super year for an outstanding team, David Clifford really stood up when needed, the last goal was a bit Maurice Fitz like. I'm not saying that there wasn't others that played well but he was sublime when needed.
Forgive my ignorance but is it correct that daniel o Brien couldn't receive the cup after being sent off? That would be very hard for an adult to take not to mind a 17 year old even having the cushion of the win in the back pocket. No need to mention the ref!!!

I was in Croke Park on Saturday and can honestly say I enjoyed it immensely. Not since the day Kerry won Sam in '14 have I been in such good humour after a game. It was a super performance by the Sem mainly because it was the first time all year where they looked to be in trouble. with young lads in that scenario you just don't know how they'll react. A lesser team might have wilted. When the going was tough they kept themselves in the game. They never lost their cool. Young Clifford stood out from the start a real talent. That second goal will live long in the memory. Dara Moynihan deserves special praise. He put in a savage afternoon's work. A real leader for the Sem. The Glass sending off was a turning point. Like everyone else I did not see it. Someone said to me after the game that it was for a knee in the back. Can anyone confirm this? Either way although it changed the game I think The Sem may still have prevailed. St Pat's were not scoring much in the second half whereas the Sem had been picking off scores albeit with difficulty. The sending off did seem to lift the Killarney boys and it also took St Pat's some time to adjust to the new reality. In any case the ref evened up the numbers by sending off the Sem No 6. Unusual for both captains to see red. For those of us who had seen the defeats in '08 and '10 Saturday was sweet relief.

Very hard on a young fellow. The medal in his back pocket will ease the pain I'm sure.

Glass got the Red Card for making contact with Clifford's nether regions, not sure was it a punch or a squeeze, but the lad went down. There was a lot of "special treatment" meted out to Clifford, mostly off the ball during the game.
Immediately the umpire raised his hand and called the referee on the walkie talkie. Glass didn't really protest but that was the turning point of the game.
Dan O'Brien got a huge welcome in his home club Glenflesk last night as captain of the Hogan Cup winning team emulating his clubmate Seamus Moynihan.

Go on the Sem! What a fantastic and long overdue victory for a school that has produced some of the best talent the country has ever seen. Thought it looked dead & buried. A battle hardened northern team getting their noses with breathing space of an untested kerry team at croker in a final is a very familiar scenario in the last 10 years, but fair play to the Sem lads they never panicked and should grit & composure beyond their years.
This was the first of 2 games this weekend where a Kerry team prevailed despite the best efforts of some baffling referreing decisions I have ever seen. The decision (I think against Clifford) at the beginning of the second half was a standout. A St. Pats man pushes him into another St. Pats player right in front of him in a scoreable position and he gives a free out. I have even seen some laughable suggestions on the usual sites that he was pro Sem but anyway.
The turning point was Glass red card, still not been confirmed what it was for to me concretely but thought he walked a fine line all day and committed a number of yellow card offences.
I don't think anymore needs to be said that has not been said about Cliffords exhibition. That thunderbolt at the end really summed up, surely be a contender come december on tg4 goals of the year! What was commendable was that the Sems most talked about forward had an off day and was well marshalled yet the other forwards stepped up when counted and how. Particularly Clifford & Moynihan.
I thought Potts & O'Donoghue did well at midfield and certainly weren't being cleaned out by Glass. What was killing the Sem was runners from deep opening wide spaces much like the Kerry senior team have been allowing over the last 2/3 years.
3 Hogan Cups, 2 Minors in a row. Its not all doom & gloom!

Small point but Seamus did not captain that Sem team in '92. That honour went to Niall Mangan of Kilcummin. I found it amazing that there was no Kilcummin man on the panel on Saturday. That must be a first for a Sem senior team.
