5 years later, with the benefit of TV replays, sky plus, youtube and the ability to watch it a gazillion times there is still no consensus as to whether or not the handpass was legal. So how is the referee - in a split second, in front of a baying crowd and with the confusion of the new handpass rule swirling around his head - supposed to be relied upon to get all of his calls inch perfect. we should have gotten over it by now.

I'll need to look back at the game over the weekend, but I seem to recall Kerry having a bit of joy particularly in the first half with playing long ball into Donaghy not on the edge of the square, but around the 14 - 21 yard area.
Possibly just a random outcome of underhit passes or Donaghy being slightly out of position, but got me to thinking that it could be an interesting variation - bring him out a little bit and force defenses to push out a little to combat him. Would leave a bit more space in behind for runners to exploit looking for goals, and a layoff to 25 yards is as easy point as a layoff to 15 yards.

If he was unsure then he shouldn't have blown up. You have to be certain about something if you're disallowing a goal.

lol, do ye not think some of these boys hate Tyrone enough with you giving them more ammo with speculation about "narrow" guards of honnor, and such like.... lol.... I also heard a rumour that we had dirty looks on our faces when the Kerry players appeared ... Disgraceful !! Sure why would some of these boys hate Tyrone? What have Tyrone ever done to them? Exactly, Ive been telling them that for years !!! ... Actually, Ive made it my life's work

Whither the pop pass from KD - in a FF line withdrawn to the 45 - to Darran O'Sullivan? An '11 tactic by D Buckley?

No. But there is always the odd smart arse who has nothing better to do during the mid term break or other school holidays.
Our outside contributors are welcome and I enjoy the opinions of Rashers, Donegalman, Ard Mhaca and a couple of the Cork lads.

I think non-Kerry users should be allowed on but only to speak when spoken to. And Tyrone users should only be allowed to post one post a week.

Whither the pop pass from KD - in a FF line withdrawn to the 45 - to Darran O'Sullivan? An '11 tactic by D Buckley? I was looking at it from the POV of Donaghy being around the 21 when the ball drops, so you'd be looking at passes forward to JOD/Geaney who would have a bit more space inside, and passes out to 30/35 yards to the likes of Buckley, Sheehan, Gooch waiting to pull the trigger quickly as well. It's mostly been the way that the long ball tactic focusses on getting it as close to the small square as possible over the years, I just think it's a tweak that offers interesting potential.

Well lads, I'm a long time follower if this forum and admirer of some of the analysis I've read.
Hope to contribute to discussions over the next few months.
Massive Kerry fan living in Meath.
Hope the lads got lots if hard work done in Portugal. Especially around the tackle and the defense. To me that was the biggest concern during the league.
I'm dying to see Colm & James back on the field together. That will get the heart racing!

The floodgates seem to be open in Tyrone with player after player leaving the panel. A very bad sign. If there is a believe they can have a crack at Sam this year or next I wouldn't think they would leave en masse. I'm not a big fan of Tyrone, but it is sad to see this happening. Hopefully this gives others the chance to step up and show Ireland there is still a bit of football in Tyrone.
The exodus from the Tyrone senior football panel shows no sign of letting up as PJ Lavery has become the latest player to walk away.
BBC Sport Northern Ireland are reporting that the 25-year-old has followed in the footsteps of Dwayne Quinn, Paddy McNeice, Shay McGuigan and Emmet McKenna by opting out of the panel.
The quartet were, apparently, frustrated with a lack of game time but Lavery had started one league fixture and was used frequently as a substitute.
Whatever the reason, Lavery's departure is another set-back for Mickey Harte and his backroom team ahead of the Ulster SFC clash against Donegal in Ballybofey on May 17th.

I wonder is it a de-facto rejection of the current manangement team there? That is not to be mischievous, I think MH will probably go soon anyway. I also felt that Tyrone were doing ok overall but need another top forward, maybe two to progress, and that they clearly aren't going to be winning All-Is at the moment no matter who is coach.
I think MH should have taken a break a couple of years back and then he could have come back fresh after 3-5 years away, if the position was available. Of course if and when he was/is gone as head coach, there was/is going to be massive pressure on whoever takes over. That could be a serious consideration in timing of any step-down, as well of course that TCB had understandably given MH the choice to stay as long as he wanted.
Perhaps one of the reasons he has stayed on so long is to give a credible successor time to emerge. Maybe the Tyrone lads have some insight on this. It would surely have to be at least a player from their great team to take over or be heavily involved, otherwise anybody else would be constantly undermined and given little chance.

Should this forum be restricted to Kerry supporters? Group think is dangerous - need outside blood and views for reality checks. One of the greatest assets of the GAA is the mingling of fans and the honest exchange of views - all biased of course by our place of birth and never ending allegiance to our forefathers.....

Sean Cavanagh is still the glue that is holding performance, some degree of performance at least, together. I'd imagine when he goes, which will be sooner rather than later, Tyrone will unravel as a footballing threat.

To be fair I don't see Tyrone as a footballing threat. They are outside the top 6 counties and probably 3rd in Ulster. Mickey Harte is not the issue in my opinion, The current bunch of players are simply not good enough. Back in the 2000s we were hearing about development squads & centres of excellence. It's really not showing results on the field. It just go's to show the impact actual tradition plays in counties success.

gaeliclife.com/2015/04/brian-mcguigan-brolly-wrong-to-target-tyrone/LAST weekend’s game between Tyrone and Kerry was probably as strange as the week which went before it. I was up in Garvaghey last week with the county minors, and it definitely was odd not seeing Mickey around the senior set-up. He might not have been on the sideline last weekend, but he spoke to the players before they left Kelly’s Inn and no doubt that inspired the players, who upped their game for him. Mickey’s health is the most important issue here, and we all hope to see him back along the sideline as quickly as possible. I would struggle to come up with more than a handful of times over my entire career that Mickey would have missed training, never mind miss a match. Some of the comments made about him over the past week or so have been nothing short of a disgrace. To talk in such a demeaning way about someone who has brought so much to the GAA, having such a go at him, was completely out of line . For my fellow columninst Joe Brolly to have had such a pop at Mickey, especially given the timing and the circumstances, was just totaly wrong. Joe is a very smart man, his comments are always extremely well thought out not just in what he says but when he says it. There’s no doubting his intelligence, his arguments are always done for a reason, but it’s sad whenever you resort to targetting individuals like Mickey Harte, Sean Cavanagh and Philip Jordan, as has been the case over the past week. The whole way through the league, we’ve talked about how one bad performance was backed up with a good performance for Tyrone, and so it proved to be the case again last weekend. We all know how poor Tyrone had been the previous week, and I was extremely impressed to how Tyrone reacted to the negative press they had received. I’m sure Mickey Harte would have been equally impressed by the show that his side had turned in. It’s certainly not an ideal situation for Tyrone, getting relegated just before the Championship and expecially with the Donegal game so close on the horizon. The one thing that disappointed me last weekend was that Tyrone never really went for it. Tyrone had a plan and it worked well in the first half, but once Kerry got the goal the dynamic of the game changed. Tyrone needed to push forward and go for the win, to express themselves a bit more. It was very clear for Tyrone from before the game what they needed to do, and no matter what way you dress it up, Tyrone fell short. They knew they needed a two point win, nothing else would be good enough, and they didn’t get it. Granted, Kerry had to put on all of their big guns to get over the line, but they did enough. What hasn’t been highlighted enough over the past couple of days in my opinion is that in the last 20 minutes, Tyrone had wave after wave of attacks, and Kerry just stopped them by cynical fouling. Time after time Tyrone players were going through and had their run brought unceremoniously to a halt, but it doesn’t seem to be highlighted when it’s Kerry who are doing it. It just shows you that the dark acts can be employed by any team, so it just goes to show that no matter what your history or how good of players you have, all teams do it when it’s necessary to do so. Tyrone had opportunities. If Joe McMahon’s shot had gone in, or Sean Cavanagh’s, which came straight after the Kerry goal and would have been a great response, then it could have been a very different outcome. Even at the very end, when Darren McCurry didn’t seem to know what the story was when he took his point to equalise when in reality a draw was no good to Tyrone. Why he chose to put it over the bar we don’t know. I think you have to take the positives from the game, and I think it was a nice boost in your last competitive outing before the Championship that they earned a draw against the current All-Ireland champions, and made them work damn hard for it. The club season gets underway this Sunday in Tyrone, and it’s good that the county lads get the chance to blow the cobwebs out in their club shirts. With another few players having departed from the county scene this week in favour of lining out with their clubs, I think it only acts to underline just how important club football is to the players. They will only be willing to sit on the county sideline for so long, and it’s becoming increasingly frustrating for them to sit getting no football for any team. It’s increasingly the case that you hear people talking about those county subs that, when they do line out for their clubs in league or Championship, they don’t stand out because they are so rusty or have regressed from not getting competitive games. That’s no good for the development of any player, and is something which needs to be addressed.

But ultimately Tyrone have 4 top players, Morgan/Harte/Cavanagh & Currie. That's it in my opinion.

I'd be the last one to favour the 'closed' option or any form of hostility, but in this case a bit of restriction would certainly have advantages for the team and at the end of the day that's what it's all about. Nothing personal against those from other counties on here, but why would anyone want to be in the forum of a county other than their own, moreover as it is for supporters. Personally I think it goes against the grain of my own focus, though exchanges with other counties in person are an absolute treat when you meet the right ones and which I do with rare if understandable exception. I wonder do we sometimes feel restricted when we are aware that others are on here to such an extent? What is the situation with other counties? What do our Control people have to say, maybe they have a definitive view. I think this is a debate we certainly need to have.

I think a major reason a few guys retired last week was because of the immediate playing status of Joe McMahon when he returned just prior to the Kerry match ... If you remember, he left the panel for the league and has just came back ... Obviously the players who left are of the opinion that this is just not on !! What would youse do ... Play who you think is the better player to try and get the last ditch result, or go with the guys who have been training all year !! btw - Some would say that the guys who left werent that great anyway !! . . . . There are credible successors I believe but are any of them willing to push MH out? .. though I do know a lot of folk who want him out asap ....Personally I think he may go this year anyway and if he does at least it will be on his own terms .. He's owed that (and more) at least !
