This is Stage where Kerry’s ability to score goals will be crucial as gooch said it is a sucker punch and bit psychological too. Come on the kingdom let’s do it !!

Very apprehensive about this game. Very long week ahead at this rate. I really don't think we can start a HL of Brosnan / Paidi / Moynihan Just far to light and not defensive minded enough. I don't see many alternatives though. Having said the one thing I am positive on is that Kerry have been working alot on breaking down blanket defensive teams. Derry set up like that on Sat and will like do similar against us. We should be experienced enough now to work the scores and show the required patience. I'd personally hold Geaney /Murphy / OBrien in reserve and introduce them when the game opens up. I am optimistic enough about Sunday but feel it will be our defence rather than our attack that will be our trump card; midfield will be ok, but my main worry is about our wing forwards - neither are an option for a long kick out & think they are not battlers - hope they both prove me wrong. I am hoping that Graham is available as he will be needed at some stage.

I would agree that the probable half forward line of Brosnan, Paudie, Moynihan is not the best suited for this particular opponent. So to me consideration has to be given to starting Stephen O’Brien. He had a huge effect on the semi final last year. Does he have enough juice in the legs? That I don’t know but if he does then it has to be considered. Brosnan has plenty pace and football but tackling or physical stuff not his strongest attribute. Same with Moynihan. Burke probably lacking a bit in this department also. Other option is Adrian Spillane but his form isn’t great this season. Not much reason to debate it when it’s 99% that Jack and company will go for the starting half forward line as predicted but we definitely could see it cause us problems and a smart team like Derry will target it.

Still can't get motivated for this condensed championship. There was a time when Kerrys run to the final at the end of September was the highlight of Summer. Now it's a national league up to end of June and the Chanpionship is run off in July. No time for a build up for games or for the hype around it to build.
Throw in every game is 15 attackers against 15 defenders between the 45 and the goal line and it's no wonder attendances have plummeted.

GK) Shane Ryan 2 Paul Murphy 3 Jason Foley 4 Tom O’Sullivan 5 Brian Ó Beaglaoich 6 Tadhg Morley 7 Gavin White 8 Diarmuid O’Connor 9 Joe O’Connor 10 Dara Moynihan 11 Paudie Clifford 12 Tony Brosnan 13 David Clifford 14 Seanie Shea 15 Paul Geaney
Subs to play Graham o Sullivan or Dylan Casey Mike Breen Adrian Spillane Killian Spillane Cillian Burke
I think we the supporter enter this game unsure, the past performance looked laboured, are we ready for the high intensity that Derry will surely bring for 45 minutes(previous games to take its toll), will Derry have a bench to maintain the intensity in the last 20. Are we concerned about previous performance of some key players, Yes, so slightly worried, but I have faith in the starting 15, Derry will leave room at the back to score goals, this needs to be exploited with a fast counter, slight worry about our bench. Kerry by 5 to 7.

When Peter Keane left in 2021, Jack spoke openly (before being appointed manager)about needing a balance in the half forward line. Tony, Paudie and Dara has worked well in the last few games, but surely he'll be tempted to change that for Sunday. It's the kind of game where the half back lines could have more licence to attack than the half forward line. Getting scores from the likes of Tom Sullivan, Brian, Gavin and midfield will be important Sunday.

You could make a logical case for naming Tom O’Sullivan as a half forward for this game and I think he would be perfect in such a scenario but again, do I see Jack doing that? Not a blessed hope.

I feel like that half forward line has plenty of hard work in it.
Perhaps a lack of height an issue when it comes to kickouts but I think all have the ability to win a break.
And crucially - it has more scores in it with T Brosnan there.
I hope we run with them.
It's Derry who should be worrying about Kerry!
But yes, I feel foolish for calling Derry a busted flush.

Burke just hasn't shown anything for me so far. No sign of his form in county championship. He was our best player against Dublin in the league on a night when very few others performed. His game is a running game and the problem he’s had is nearly all the teams we’ve played so far in the championship have just dropped off us into a blanket which he isn’t as effective against as a Moynihan or Brosnan. In games against Dublin or Mayo if they were still in it I feel he’s a great option. Derry will be somewhere in between Dublin and the likes of Meath etc. in that they will drop deep into a blanket but they also might try and push up on our kickout. I’d be hopeful he’ll have a big impact for us yet, Croke Park will also suit him.

The two Cliffords garner so much attention from the opposition, so in theory the other forwards should make hay.

I think Jack will look to rejig the half forward line. I think up until now it was about getting game time into lads etc but, now is the time to pick the best 'team'. I can see Paul Geaney dropping to the bench with Tony Brosnan getting the roving corner forward role to kick point on the loop.
Half back is the Derry launch pad and cant see us going in with DM, PC, and TB in there. Not questioning any of there work ethic etc but, I think we will be under the pump at stages in the middle third on Sunday so will need the extra bit of bite or steel that playing someone like Adrian Spillane there. I don't think SOB has it in the legs to be honest. He hasnt played much. Unless the plan is to start him and take him off around half time and hoped to have put a significant dent in Kerry by then.
If Graham is fit does that automatically mean Paul Murphy dropping out of the defence? Or will he be held in reserve?

There’s a good chance with match ups etc. Derry will line up with McKinless and Eoin McEvoy at 5 and 7. McKinless is well known and McEvoy scored 2-2 against Dublin in the league, 2 big powerful players who love to drive forward. It has to be a concern if we’re coming with Tony Brosnan and Dara Moynihan at 10 and 12.
Previous years it’s been Adrian Spillane filling one of those jerseys, which isn’t optimal either as he doesn’t bring enough attacking wise. Ideally we would have 2 athletic wing forwards with a bit of size who are also a real offensive threat. Think a slightly younger Stephen O’Brien. Cillian Burke has the potential to be that and I see one or two younger players in the county who are showing promise.

Looking fwd to this one. Despite Derry’s losses- fact is they have alot of excellent players - probably at least 5 or 6 thta would get on any team in the country and that hasnt changed. So far, every journalist/podcast/ ive seen is tipping Kerry -albeit with caveats- so very very important we take nothing for granted. We have the player to win I believe but we will need everyone to play well and we’ll needs some smarts on the sideline. My biggest worry would be midfield- I rate Glass and Rogers very highly and im still not sure how good out 2 lads are. In fact , id sat Im not yet sure how good our team is yet this year - have been to all matches so far and different lads have stood up and shone but, lets be honest, we havent played anything like this since last year’s final- butterflies are starting- bring it on

I'd be far more worried about Rodgers than Glass. Rodgers is serious. I completely agree with you, going by the last few games, over the full hour Rogers has been consistent, he was one of the main driving forces behind the drive in taking the game to Mayo, similar vs Westmeath. Glass has been sporadic and coughed up one major ball late on vs Mayo for one of their late scores. For me it's more Rogers that is driving the team forward, but in saying that, Glass does usually shine in Croker. On another point, god forbid, if the game went this far, who would you like to see or who would you expect Jack to pick as his five penalty takers. For me it's not necessarily the best footballers more the calmest when the pressure mounts and you know any mistake is crucial. For me, Paudie, David are nailed on, I read before that Seanie doesn't like taking spot kicks, so he for me is 50/50 depending on how the game goes, Tony strikes me as a calm cold baller, however he may not be on the field of play after full and extra time, similar with Paul Geaney. Tom Sullivan strikes me as a solid individual as does Shane Ryan.... Similar too with Diarmuid O'Connor. For me the five are, David, Paudie, Seanie, Shane Ryan and one of Paul/Tony if still on the field or Diarmuid.

Hasn't been seen yet at the biggest stage: "Conor Glass - Derry needed a big, big game from the Glen man if they were going to win. Hard as he tried, it just didn’t happen for him on the biggest day. 6" "Conor Glass – 6 Not the day he would have anticipated. Didn’t assert himself when Derry went long off kick-outs and quickly found himself in a crowd whenever he took possession. Brendan Rogers – 8 The best midfielder on display. Scored two points but took a couple of big kick-out under extreme pressure." This isn't to say he can't have a big say on Sunday. He is probably due on as such. If it gets to penalties, I don't think it matters who Kerry put out - Derry win the penalty shootout unfortunately. 90% sure of that.

Kerry’s newly adopted attacking approach and formation should see us comfortably through this encounter with a bit to spare 5 to 7 points seems realistic. If there is a shock this weekend and there could be one I don’t see the shock being Kerry.

The only way Derry win this is by scoring goals. And by that they’ll need at least 2 of them.
So defense will be key. The half forwards don’t need to to be turning over ball but need to work hard and if we gain parity in midfield I’m sure we’ll have the game.
The biggest improvement this year is that we’ve taken the pressure off our key forwards, our scoring threats are all over the park like they used to be in our glory days.
The one improvement I’d like to see is still more goals. I feel we don’t go for the jugular as much we should. A Donaghy or a Gooch were far better at this,

In my humble opinion goalscoring threat is missing link Currently. Ruthlessness. As gooch said it gives sucker punch, bit psychological and lifts the crowd too.

I expect that the team will be very similar to the recent teams. That means Tony Brosnan at wing forward. Tony’s contribution is a key part of the system where more players are scoring. They are now more threatening than they have been for years. Its Derry’s decision if they want their wing backs to wander away and leave even more space for Kerry scorers. Its more likely they will have forwards in there helping the backs. The goals thing is less important than players being caught ball watching in defence. Individuals must take on the responsibility of winning the ball. This is separate from players coming through the centre which must also be dealt with. Both could be dealt with together in an overhaul of defensive tactics.
Ultimately what we need to see is Kerry playing the precise football they have been playing with a bit more urgency now that we are in knockout territory but still not peaking.

Only a prophet can call this Derry are much better this year than last in that they have big Emmet Bradley playing 50 or 60 min Then they found a few scoring forwards such as Loughlin Murray and McEvoy is bouncing back
We are better too and O Beaglaoi seems to be back better that before The spread of scorers is key
Too close to call !!!!!

I would have a few areas of concern for us.
1 - Midfield - I’m not sure how we will cope with the Rogers & Glass pairing. The last day Joe O’ Connor played in Croke park is one he will want to forget. He got absolutely torched by Fenton. If things aren’t going well around the middle where is our cover?
2 - Goals - Meath, Louth, Cork all scored goals at their ease during our group games and Munster final respectively. I don’t think we kept too many clean sheets during the league. This is a trait that has me worried. Anyone else in Portlaoise the last day would have to admit that a better class of finisher would have taken 3 of those chances, at least. Add to that our lack of goals and things could get fairly hairy on Sunday. 3 - The timing our run narrative - This drives me wrong. To win this game on Sunday we will need to improve our performance levels quite a bit. It appears to be an assumption that we will, but by how much? We need a lot to go right for us on Sunday, as do Derry. We should assume nothing and if possible, set the tone from the start.
