Kerry v Mayo had a big crowd in the Super 8s in 2019. Kerry v Donegal was a good contest in Croke Park. People will vote with their feet. The GAA are selling a pup.

Re the crowd. When you see Mayo supporters aren't going to their home games and croke Park empty, then that tells you enough! After covid, going to games is no longer priority for people You'd wonder are we better off playing our games in tralee and a full stadium like the league. Despite this, we still may have the biggest attendance of the weekend and isn't that sad? The lack of jeporady is the issue and no entertainment.

Disappointing crowd today. Walked through the town just over an hour beforehand and it was very quiet.
Kerry played some nice football and made a load of turnovers. However the lack of goals is a bit of a worry, Dublin would defiantly gone for the throat more often.
My kids were happy, got them to their first championship game in Killarney, got loads of autographs and photos with the players. My 9yo son was extra happy as he was given a pair of David Cliffords gloves.

Job done, a solid performance without being spectacular, how much did Monaghan lack of execution contribute to Kerry ease of victory, we need to be clear Monaghan were a huge disappointment, and it’s hard to see any of our group game getting up to championship intensity, that is a worry for me.
You can only control what you can, for me I was disappointed with the lack of use of our bench, game was over at half time, we should have maximised the bench use away earlier, in the home stretch our bench will be pivotal. We created goal chances yesterday, so for me not too worried, worse if we were not creating.
With regard the overall championship format, like many here and around the country, it’s not attractive any more, the format is broken, we need more quality games not more games, the people have voted, take action. You can’t please all counties or all people, hard decisions need to be made on format and the overall condensed system, as well as some minor rules changes, or else football is losing its appeal. Well done kerry yesterday men and ladies and best of luck to U20 today.

Also, is the indecent haste with which everything is being run off making for too many games and distractions? This weekend, for example, the Kerry GAA supporter has a menu of senior championship, U20 final, Joe McDonagh, and a full round of County League. We also have the minor championship going on and not forgetting the ladies' games. It's been a similar story for the past month, cramming everything in to a smallish window. And plenty more of it to come. There's a burnout factor for people and they aren't going to go to everything. No time to hype up the occasions either, one game on top of another.

Let's behonest lads Monaghan we're really poor.
Kerry had tougher games in Munster.
Having said that some of the scores were exceptional and the big positive for me is the spread of scores.
We don't appear half as reliant on DC.
It was laughable though at one point Monaghan were 15 points down yet they continued to double mark him.
Re the lack of goals, I wouldn't be concerned Kerry could have scored numerous yesterday if they wanted too.
Re the crowd,
Really poor and when you consider Kerry won't play at home again for 7 months.

If my memory serves me correctly, this group system was designed to provide all counties with enough games to motivate players, to make a commitment and to stay on board. The downside of that is that there is very little ‘edge’ to these games where one team only is eliminated from the group of four. Fans will not be bothered traveling long journeys when it’s not a knockout game.
On a side note – my God but the €5 match programme was daylight robbery. Four pages of: ‘Join the dots’, ‘How many Fruit’, Colour in’ and ‘Find 10 differences’. Surely a better effort could be made.

On the matter of programmes, the gaa no longer take cash at the gate which is ostracising a vast majority of our elderly supporters .. but they have no issue taking €5 cash for an advertisement booklet with dummy teams... rant over

But I suppose no matter what they do with groups, round robins etc, the reality is that there's a gulf between the 4/5 counties with the ability/ambition to win the All Ireland. The hurling is different because they've already separated the real contenders from the rest in 2 groups, providing great excitement and a cutting edge, and just by the pure luck of geography wrapping in a provincial title. Matches like yesterday do nothing but provide an opportunity for weaker counties to share a pitch with the likes of Kerry to get a feel for where they need to get to. Getting players from these counties to do the work to get to this level is another story. The real All Ireland football championship could be ran off, and will be ran off, in the month of July

Jack will be pleased with the win .24 points scored with a wide range of scorers and variety in attack.Of course Monaghan were poor and we still have huge issues in midfield but this is the only template that can win us the all Ireland getting at least 5 scoring forwards on the field together and less reliance on one or two players for scores.I think we will be very close and definitely are moving in the right direction and don’t underestimate my shrewd south Kerry neighbour he has the track record when it comes to winning all Irelands .Derry losing to Galway yesterday proves there is very little between the top teams on any given day .

The first half was as close to being flawless as one could wish to see. The second half was a little sloppy, largely due fo the fact that the case was well settled by then . Monaghan were disappointing for a team who still field a lot of big names. Perhaps, they are targeting the Meath and Louth games. Either way it is likely that we will see the last of Conor McManus this year, He was unable to cope with the pace and ambition of Jason. Conor has been an adornment.
I thought Diarmuid was outstanding yesterday, particularly in the first half when the tone was being set.
There seems to be a division here regarding the need for goals. I belong to the camp which says one or two makes your job much easier. I cannot understand why , with so many top forwards, we score so few. I feel we tend to give a pass too many in our effort to score them.
At the other end I must chide Shane Ryan for the concession of the goal, otherwise impeccable. You simply must get a stronger hand to the ball in those situations to get it out of the danger area. There were one or two similar situations during the NFL but luckily the ball fell to a Kerry player and therefore the incident was forgotten . It would be an absolute sickener to lose a tight , knockout game because of a goal like that.
I cannot understand the situation with Killian Spillane. Had an outstanding game in the NFL against Galway but has largely been left unoccupied since.
I did not see the Galway/Derry game where there was another stamping incident. It is probably the most cowardly action one can perpetrate on a football field. Thankfully the culprit was nailed this time . It will be interesting to see what suspension will be imposed.
As Leonard Cohen used to say next we take Manhattan , I mean Navan.
Best of luck to the u20s and to the Kerry hurlers today . Normally , I would be making the trip to Portlaoise but , like the aforementioned Conor McManus, time has caught up, maybe even passed me out.

The rest of it is only filler bull. I really don't care what Jason Foley's favourite food is, much less want to pay €5 to find out. Fair due to the ladies' game - teamsheets handed out at the gate. Somebody on here put me onto Score Beo recently. Up to the minute lineups, substitutions, scorers, card victims - all in-play. Great app. No more programme tax for me.

The reality is they are a small county that have had a great team for the last 7 or 8 years and it's coming to an end. I'd say the Hughes's, beggan mcmanus etc worked as hard as any Kerry player over those years. I for one have the greatest of respect for monaghan football they absolutely give it everything for their county if every county was as organised and committed as them we would have some championship!

This wasn't atall the point I was trying to make. It's unfortunate it came across this way. Sunday morning!! The point I was trying to make is that it's near impossible to create a structure in a competition where there is such a range in the quality of teams in it. I don't know what the answer is. There's only 4/5 teams at most will win it. It's much the same in hurling, it's just that it's kept between themselves. A top 8 team round robin format might be better. Better quality matches with more bite. I just can't believe Monaghan came to win yesterday, and that's no way to be involved in a competition

I feel we tend to give a pass too many in our effort to score them. I think you nailed it there Veteran. I thought the same throughout the national league. It’s like we make an extra pass to ‘be sure to be sure’ and end up as anything but sure. The Seán O’Shea opportunity yesterday being a classic case in point as it had opened up nicely for him to get his shot off but he opted to pass it left and the opportunity was smothered. I thought it much more unlikely to have been saved if Sean had taken the shot himself. Great post again Veteran! Lots of very good points as usual! Great to see you keeping up the good work!

Job done today. Kerry looked good at times, I'd guess they had a very high conversion rate in the first half. Defence looked very good at times, still gave up a couple of goal chances and Shane Ryan will be disappointed how he dealt with the high ball for Monaghan's goal. However we got to the ball in numbers at times and did well in turning ball over at times too. Kerry will beat most of the teams from the chasing pack on scoring ability alone. Few of those teams can regularly hit 18+pts. As regards our prospects for Sam? Who knows, I still think we'll be short of what's required. Tony Brosnan and Paul Geaney looked good today but how will they fare against the best teams who operate with pacey, attacking wing-backs? Still fluffing goal chances which is a major worry. Also the bunch-and-break tactic on kickouts is fine until a team lines up in zone on our kickout, it will be interesting to see how we adapt when we face that. The atmosphere was fairly dull given the lack of competitiveness to this game. As a result we could hear most of what the players were saying to each other. I was happy to see David Clifford chewing a few fellas out over bad decisions on the ball. The players obviously expect high standards of themselves and are probably tougher on themselves than anything posters write here. Onwards to the next group game. I don't see the current structure lasting long for championship and we're most likely looking at 3 uncompetitive group games. People will vote with their feet in staying away from a lot of these games in the future. It says a lot about the atmosphere, or lack of it, when we could easily hear the likes of David Clifford giving a piece of his mind on more than one occasion. Seánie Shea gave Tom Sullivan a right earful as well in the first half for a poorly placed garryowen into Paul Geaney. It was a damp squid of a game for sure. It was difficult to see any game plan really from the Farney especially in the first half. I thought they loaded the middle a few times and would have gotten joy with a long kick out but it never materialised. It was depressing to see one of the games all time greats in Conor McManus back in his own defence, on more than one occasion in the full back line. The mind boggles. I suspect like others have alluded to that the Monaghan focus will be on their remaining fixtures. This group phase simply cannot be sustained. It offers zero. If they are to persist with it I don't see why they can't make it to just 2 teams exiting onto the knock out phase. It certainly would make it much more interesting. I suppose the argument against that is we'd have a few dead rubbers on the final day of the he group. Joe O Connor mixed the good with the bad. I feel if he did the simple thing better he'd improve significantly. He won a couple of great balls but on more than one occasion he then either decided to hold onto it too long, engaged senselessly into contact or choose the wrong option. He was at the receiving end of David Cliffords wrath in the second half.

As bad as Monaghan were, Kerry were very good for 20 mins of the first half - it was as much as they needed to be to end the contest as a competitive tie.
It was Diarmuid's best half of 2024 by a distance. Geaney and Brosnan were very productive - however its unlikely such a forward line would line up against teams with marauding defensive runners (e.g. Donegal, Mayo, Derry). Witness Brosnan getting caught for the first Monaghan goal chance. Horses for courses is fine by me. Both corner backs excelled in attack!
Shane Ryans mistake was poor and avoidable. The prelude to this was Stephen O'Brien running down a blind alley, getting isolated and being turned over. Again, very avoidable.
I thought the subs struggledd to get up the tempo of the game and all were fairly lethargic though Burke was hungry for ball. To be fair, the game was done and dusted early doors and a gut did not require busting....

I d like to ask the good posters on here to please give Joe O Connor A break. Last year we complained we were too conservative at midfield not creative enough not scoring enough Now we have an exciting dynamic midfielder who brings energy and enterprise and brings goals he’s probably our most likely goal scorer which is badly needed He improving after a brutal injury Will ye please row in behind Joe and watch him help us get to the promised land .

I feel that is a reasonable comment. I agree, Joe is clearly joining the attack from deep when goals are on. He got 1 vs Dublin this year. He had 2 goal chances vs Monaghan (including the rebound from Paudies saved effort) and another vs Clare that was smothered by the keeper. He also had a goal chance in the 2022 AI Final if memory serves me right from joining the attack late but he was fouled and Seanie scored the free. It's clearly a strength of his and hopefully he'll start converting 1 or 2 of them and he can be a constant goal threat from midfield.

Monaghan were beyond bad but still hit us for a goal and could have had two more. Agree with all the sentinments on this structure, its the dampest of damp squibs! A nothing provincial followed by 3 more games of dredge.
To say this had an early stages league feel about it is an insult to the league. Game was done after 15 mins. Monaghan still walking the ball up the pitch when they were being destroyed will baffle me forever.
Kerry won by 10 and never got out of 3rd gear, there has to be a better system to think of for the championship, people are voting with their feet.
Might say that Meath away might have a bit of edge to it given its on in their ground.
Any chance GAA would confirm the times of these things more in advance? Is it Saturday or Sunday!

think we need a bit of grounding here, alot of very good games in the football championship so far this year....lets not forget its not that long ago, way before this format, that only 30,000 attended Kerry v Tyrone semi final in 2019.
attendances have been dropping for years and covid killed off the last bit of extra interest

On the lack of goals it is a case of "shot selection" and and "decision making" coming back to bite us. Players tend to think that there is always a better placed colleague until they end up in a cul-de-sac. All great strikers take responsibility and end getting an acceptable percentage. "I'll do it myself" attitude a la Con O'Callaghan.
In the Louth game, when Dublin found the small square crowded the forwarded immediately turned and kicked the ball back out the wing, sometimes outside the 45 metre line, to start a recycle. It gave the impression that they saw a blocked shot as an opportunity for the opposition to start an attack. Kerry need to factor this into their thinking.

Kerry play 2 more div 2 games after this until the real business starts. There was 10,000 there and people shuffling out at half time. But well done on taking something I said and trying to twist it into something I didnt.
