Eloquent really? Read it again. I think it is a rotten post The only thing that is eloquent about it is that the poster has an eloquent command of the English language and owing to his skills in this regard can put together a good argument to support his view of the world a view which revolves around Kerry football yet he probably never put in the hours to training that the player in question has . The first paragraph in the post sets out from the poster that he doesn't know the facts which isn't a great starting point. The player in question has been accused of behaving in a "thanklessness" fashion. Accusations of " selfishness" sarcasm of " wined and dined" and u really think this is eloquent? Players leave the kerry panel most years for various reasons. Casting dispersions on their character like has been done here is bang of order I ask again - do you retain the view it is an eloquent post? I also say to Veteran that wishing players the best in their decusion and referencing " sincerely " aint that sincere given the rethoric in your post I intended to ignore this bitter diatribe but as he has come back for another bite I feel compelled to reply. Significantly, I issued the disclaimer that if Ronan left the panel for personal reasons my comments should be ignored. Mossie choose to ignore that disclaimer but instead decided to climb up to the high moral ground to defend the purity of the Kerry athlete. The high moral ground is a crowded place , a slippery slope . Best avoided. “ A rotten post”? A strange phrase, The worst that could be said about my post was that it was unfair, depending on your perspective. But rotten! “ Can put together a good argument to support his view of world, a view which revolves around Kerry football”. This paragraph baffled me. I am still not sure how to interpret it. I can only interpret it to mean that my view of the world is informed by my interest in Kerry football! If my interpretation is correct then it would be hard to surpass that sentence for idiocy. “ Yet he probably never put in the hours in training that the player in question has” . So , to borrow a phrase , unless you have been there , done that , you are not entitled to express an opinion. If one took that view seriously we may as well close down this forum. I am not a member of any all dancing , all singing fan club. Therein , it seems , lies the difference between Mossie and me. Mossie seems to imply that playing football entails the making of sacrifices. One makes sacrifices to provide shelter , clothing , food, education, good health etc for our children. One does not make sacrifices to play football. Football is a hobby. If you are good at that hobby you may get an invitation from the Kerry County Board to become part of an elite group. You are free to accept or decline that invitation. If you accept you will be pampered like a baby with every conceivable need catered for in professional sport facilities. That involves considerable expense for the County Board. What they ask from you is a commitment for a full season at least. If half way through the season you decide to withdraw for “frivolous” reasons, like for example not always making the match day panel, then expect me to be on your case. In the last sentence, Mossie suggests it is illegitimate for me to wish a player good luck in his life and in club football if I have been critical of his commitment to the county team. As pathetic as it is illogical. To suggest that intercounty playing football does not require sacrifices is, frankly, ridiculous. I suggest you talk to the partners/family/friends of any Kerry footballer and get back to us on the statement "One does not make sacrifices to play football".

Well, going by recent trends, it is far to consider that the team vs Monaghan will be released this evening, Jack won’t make wholesale changes, however, it is fair to say that a fully fit Graham O’Sullivan will be included, he for me, has become a key figure for us and one we realistically cannot take the field without. The six backs in Ennis were, Murphy, Jason, Tom Sull, Brión, Tadgh and Gavin, a lot will depend on the recovery of Gavin, however, he was on the field after the match signing autographs and taking pictures with younger fans. If Gavin is fit, I would hold Paul Murphy in reserve to come off the bench, I always felt that a fully fit Brión O’Beagleoich has to start and offers us more from restarts.
Although we laboured at stages and in my opinion, the two are too similar, unless Jack wants to make radical changes at this stage of the competition, one would expect the Tralee duo to start. It is hard to make a case for changing the starting sextet that started vs Clare. Paul won two marks and was heavily involved, however, for me he is a finisher now as opposed to a starter… Killian continues to frustrate me, as does Brosnan at times, well and good shooting the lights out vs Clare, however, can this be repeated when two nordys are swinging off you, at times too, when filtering back he was leaving pockets unattended and even though was in position, he was too central and our left wing was exposed to the switch…
I think Shane Ryan returns to goals… this I hope will be the first change on the team sheet…

You'd imagine they would be the only changes. Looks like a fine day for the game.

Alright, the real stuff starts this weekend. I've seen some people say this group-stage doesn't matter too much, but I don't agree. During the week, I was writing down Kerry's fixtures, along with the scheduled knockout stages:
i.e. if they were to reach a final, they'd play every two weeks. If you're group-winner, you avoid that preliminary quarter-final, and playing 3 weeks in a row between the 16th and the 30th of June. So there's a big prize to winning the group: you get the weekend of the 23rd June off, and you get what should be an easier quarter-final (avoiding other group-winners). My idea is, if you have ambitions of winning the all-Ireland, you really need to win your group. I had a look at the stats last year, how the group-winners did.
The four group-winners were: Kerry, Dublin, Derry, Armagh The four semi-finalists where: Kerry, Dublin, Derry, Monaghan (and Monaghan only beat Armagh on penalties in the quarter-final!). i.e. of the 8 teams who finished 2nd and 3rd in their group, only 1 reached the semi-final (and that, on penalties) Of the 4 teams who topped their group, 3 made the semi-final. I see this trend continuing. Is it possible to win the all-ireland after finishing 2nd or 3rd in your group? Yeah, is it likely, no. So I see this being a really important game on Saturday, between the two favoured teams in the group.

If I was asked at start of year to pick my championship backs it would be just like Horseboxes selection. However after watching the league and championship campaign so far then for me Paul Murphy has to start. In fact he was Kerry s best back and most consistent during league and MFC.Imo until he has a bad day then the Jersey I'd his.In fact I think it would actually be grossly unfair to drop Murphy at this juncture. I agree Mick. I think Paul is our best man marker. He was very good on Basquel in the all Ireland final until he tired after 50 minutes. It's a tough choice but we may see Tom or Graham moved to half back line.

Looking at that I wouldn't be mad on that HF line at all.
No height at all in there.
The two OConnors may hope to have a good day as there won't be much help in that line for kickouts.

Disappointed Cillian isn’t retained. Not for the first time , it is back to the tried and trusted for Jack.
I hope Graham’s groin injury is not too serious. Groin injuries can be resistant to treatment I believe. Will be needed as the campaign progresses.

I think Geaney will spend a considerable chunk of the game in the half forward line. Burke will see plenty of minutes hopefully and with his pace could impact from the bench.
My main worry remains the lack of credible midfield options.

Very disappointed not to see him named. Let's hope this is precautionary.

Groin injuries can be resistant to treatment I believe. Will be needed as the campaign progresses. They have to manage cillians minutes over the next few games or risk him not being fit for a quarter final. Don't know anything about Graham's injury but obviously not taking any chances. I think geaney deserves to start as has started no game yet and I suspect you will see Stephen O Brien starting a qualifier too. I'm beginning to think Louth could end up being our toughest opponent in this group if they set up like they did against Dublin. Maybe Monaghan will set up the same the next day. And have a very good long range free taker in Beggan. Surely to God Monaghan aren't going to come down to Kerry and think they can beat us playing attacking football in Killarney in the summer months. They aren't that naive.

It depends on the team selection Monaghan has, had a lot of injuries a end of league and 1st round championship.

Would have preferred Cillian starting. If we are to win this All Ireland we need to start scoring a lot more goals. A threat needs to come from all over the forward line. I’m afraid there’ll be an over dependence on David again and we’ll come up short!

Very pleased with this selection Jack has gone with 5 scoring forwards think he realises that to win the all iteland we need to score big .unfortunately young Burke for all his qualities is not a prolific scorer so you can only go with one of Moynihan /Burke.Let’s get behind the team win tomorrow and we are almost guaranteed to top the group

I totally agree Mick, I think stature wise, our half forward line will be giving a few inches per man to their respective markers, and although this may be an issue for our own kickout, its not an issue if Beggan is playing and going long, its our halfback line that might be in for the rougher evening. Although, traditionally, I like to have a settled side, I think on occasion managers have to go horses for courses and in this regard, Saturday evening may be one of them. I agree that three midfielders, with one of the wing men being in that mix has merit, one of Spillane or either O'Connor could be in the mix with maybe Darran or Tony making way. Our issue two is both our lads at eight and nine like to go forward. Maybe it's too late or maybe should have been tried or even persisted with more in League, but I think we missed a trick with Sean O'Brien, he is as comfortable in midfield as is at wing back, so why not combine both and be the primary defensive midfielder with Diarmuid having the freedom, therefore releasing Joe to the wing. I hate saying it, as don't want to be disrespectful, but I'm not 100% convinced by the Stacks man yet.

I concur on Seán O’Brien - thought he would fit in eventually @ wing back with the possibility of using Gavin White as a 3rd midfield option but thinking back we did not seem to utilise the league to give a few rookies a chance. I feel that neither wing forward is up to the task unfortunately- Moynihan rarely troubles the scoreboard, Brosnan lacks the speed & physicality for the modern day 10 - he might be ok for now but would not offer too much against Dublin/Derry - might be harsh on him but the side that won in ‘22 used neither in the campaign with Moynihan injured & Brosnan out of favour.

Bags packed,
Very excited 5 year old ready to go,
I feel very apprehensive about that HF line if I'm honest.
It'll probably be enough tomorrow but would be eaten by the Dubs and Derrys of this world.
Early days yet.

Early days yet. What we need from the forwards is constant movement. One other forward should stay inside with David virtually all the time and that forward should interchange. Very few balls are cleanly fielded from long kick outs, the hungrier team normally picks up the breaking ball. Kerry need to get the hunger of '22 back while also getting a proper defensive system in place. The players are there but even with numbers back they are not instilling confidence and it's not all down to not having a defensive midfielder. Notice how Louth frustrated Dublin with what everyone thinks are inferior players. Louth had the hunger, Dublin did not. Fenton was the difference between the teams. Louth looked poor enough against both Wexford and Kildare, games they could have lost. The turnaround against Dublin was surprising. Dublin may not be as good as people think. Please keep McCarthy, Fitzsimons and possibly Cluxton on the field.

As Horsebox says pardon the punn sometimes managers go for "horses for courses "and agree that half forward line would struggle bigtime v Dubs and Derry and probably Mayo and Armagh too.Maybe Seanie will play out around half forward line also .Anyway forecast dry for tomorrow so hope the young lady has a great day and has a ball. I agree Dublin are favorites and rightly so. I also agree that Fitzsimons had a poor final and even won an All Star on the back of David having a kicking off day. McCarthy has not played well with two years outside of a 10 minute burst in a few games. Very poor also in last year's final, instead of his 10 minute burst he was bursting up players, his name saved him from getting sent off along with Gough realizing that he was already booked. I sense a slight bit of arrogance with Dublin, McCarty being captain and all, they think they can carry those players to 10 All Irelands. How Howard isn't a guaranteed starter is a puzzle.
Diarmuid O'Connor has all the necessary talents to become one of the top midfielders, we are still waiting. The only ingredient missing seems to be aggression

Take a closer look at his displays over the last two years. He is mainly living on his name. A name can cover for a lot. When he had those 10 minutes bursts everyone thought he was wonderful. In the past it had taken me a while to admit that some Kerry greats were past it. Mike Frank being the most obvious. He was only 25 or 26 or so at the time so it was difficult to accept

Joe is missing that 15% .. unfortunately and I'm being cold here, we are still lacking in this department, the league showed nothing new bar two players either side of midfield in O'Brien and Bourke to bolster or prop up.... In Jacks defence, I can't say hand on heart that there is a club midfielder that should he inside so for me it's about getting extra from other lines to compensate or bypass....

I would worry about the defensive side of Brosnan's game when played in the half forward line. He didn't have a good game against Clare on the kickout press or covering back.

He’s well off Fenton and Glass. Look he’s just not at that level, it’s probably unfair on him to expect that level from him but it’s frustrating when he has shown glimpses.
