Well a 2nd year of this dreadful format behind us and I hope we don't see a third. How many good games did we get out of it? 24 matches. What good did the hidings Clare and Meath got do for them? Roscommon won their first match in 4 months and are into preliminary quater final!! Monaghan won their first since beating Dublin the first day out in the league and are through. The jeopardy they wanted from this thing, fair to say that only Mayo & Dublin would have got anyone up out of their chair yesterday! Galway & Armagh was close at the end but was a putrid affair and but for Galway's mistakes it would have been a procession. All the rest of the games.... They seriously need to have a think about the product they want to put on offer, not just with this rules committee but this broken format and being held hostage by provincial councils. Thats my rant for a Monday anyway done. They should just scrap the 3rd place and preliminary 1/4s. Top 2 only go through.

Galway v Monaghan Louth v Cork Mayo v Derry Tyrone v Roscommon.
Hard to look beyond the home sides here, with maybe the exception of Cork obviously the pick of the round is Mayo and Derry, this could go either way depending on recovery. Both Galway and Mayo finished second on account of scoring averages, and both also held the lead going down the straight, even though they drew, I think the result will have felt like a loss to both sides from the West.
Louth and Cork could be a close one, Cork looked well at stages, key here for the rebels is the fitness and availability of Hurley. Tyrone for me will have way too much for the Rossies.
For me in the pot for the draw next weekend will be Cork, Mayo, Tyrone and Galway..... Nothing easy, the safety net is well and truly gone new, accountability start here, where every mistake will be punished...

I fancy Galway and Mayo in this prelim round more than I would fancy Tyrone.

Mayo Galway Tyrone Cork
Cork and Louth is hard to call will Cork have the smarts and patience to take on this ultra defensive team.
I'll be honest and maybe it's just my Tyrone PTSD but I would prefer to avoid them.

What I would do if you are going to stick with 16 teams is have 8 matches with say the provincial finalists seeded After that you have 8 winners-they would play each other and winners go through (4 teams). These teams have the advantage of a week off Same weekend the 8 losers would play and the 4 losers are gone. The winners of the losers round would play the losers of the winners round (4v4) and winners through to the quarters. Essentially with this format you’re gone if you lose 2. You’re through if you win 2 but if you win the first two you’ve a rest. It would through up random cracking matches in the winners round where not everything would be on the line. You’ve far less matches that mean nothing

The way Louth set up, the quick fast ball in over the top can be profitable, in this regard Hurley is vital as his key strength would be very beneficial in breaking down the defensive system adopted by Ger Brennan and co.

Not sure I would agree that Cork would hammer Louth? Having it above in Iniskeen is tough jaunt a week after Tyrone game. Plus, Hurley is unlikely to make it?
Its probably the hardest to call of the 4 games, expect Galway, Mayo & Tyrone to come out the other side.

Tyrone be without Kilpatrick now, significant blow, no doubt an appeal is in progresss Minimum of a two match ban (as he was sent off with a straight red during the league) so will probably appeal because he would definitely be needed if they get past the Rossies. However I think an appeal is likely to be a waste of time as it looked like a pretty clear strike to the chest right in front of the linesman and was miles off the ball. Wouldn't rate his chances of getting it over-turned unless there was a problem with the paperwork. Apparently Tyrone have a few injuries with their other midfielder options so this could be a very costly red Fitzpatrick picked up.

In fairness I’d have Cork 6 points better than Louth. Maybe that’s not a hammering anymore,

Cork are a better team than louth the problem for me is have Cork the football IQ to break Louth down ?
Do the have range of scorers outside of the FF line like Kerry had ?
Hurly if he plays won't get much change in that FF line.

Just joined to say how poignant it was to see a Ruairí Murphy and the Sam Maguire on the shores of Lough Beg, County Derry yesterday. Seamus Heaney wrote The Strand at Lough Beg in memory of his cousin Colm McCartney. Colm was murdered by the Glenanne Gang at a fake military checkpoint as he returned home from the Derry Kerry All Ireland Semi Final 1975. I am sure there may be some here who remember the match or even attended. You can listen to a reading of the poem by Stephen Rea at the link.
I know many of you here appreciate your history and thought you might be interested to understand the significance of Lough Beg for the launch yesterday. Go raibh maith agat

Unless they are running leagues concurrently this sounds mad wrt the players.

Go raibh maith agat Derry played Dublin in 1975. I was at the Kerry/Sligo semi final that year. Remember Pat Spillane losing a contact lens and getting a pasting at one stage but he got off the ground and soloed 50yards and scored a great point.

Currently you are guaranteed 4 games, most of which are rubbish. In the described format you’d be guaranteed 3 championship matches (one guaranteed provincial and two guaranteed AI series) all of which are meaningful. Also the only way you play three is if you lose them all

In my head somehow because you had a second chance throughout the provincials teams would have on average more matches vs if their second chance was only after their first provincial match. Now I understand that is not the proposal.

One positive I feel is that the teams overall fitness looked very good in the last few games especially against Louth.
Looking at Dublin and their age profile that could be a concern for them if they meet us. I expect we could run the legs off them.
I can only think of Geaney being on the older side on the Kerry team. Would be good to see an age comparison.
Not that the AI is a 2 horse race but we’d expect to have to beat Dublin to win SAM,

I got a flutter of excitement when James O'D tipped Kerry to win.
This was dampened somewhat when he ranked Derry #3 and tipped them to beat Mayo.
...but whatever about Derry the man surely knows Kerry football better than many.

Who would we like to get in the quarters lads ? Whoever wins between mayo and derry will be dangerous opposition, we can't get monaghan or Louth so tyrone, Cork (hopefully not!) Galway or roscommon. Galway would be the next toughest although without comer they aren't the same team I'd fancy us to beat any of the rest without too much fuss. Semis are open draw I believe so galway or mayo would be my preference tough game where we find out where we are and if good enough be well tested before a semi versus another good team.

I expect, Cork, Tyrone & Galway to win. But I am not as sure about Mayo & Derry. I expect the wounded animal will come out fighting and I wouldn't be too surprised to see Derry back in the hunt after this weekend.
It would be very Mayoish of Mayo to blow it after a good performance last weekend.

I am in agreement with all of the above; think that Mayo will have invested so much mentally in their battle with Dublin that they will struggle to beat Derry - also, the concession of the last score will have hurt them hard.

I don't really buy into that narrative re mayo tbh I think (from talking to mayo friends) the county got a huge Uplift from that game it showed them they can still compete with Dublin caveats not knockout or croke park. I think there will be a big crowd there at the weekend and they will put derry out. Speaking of confidence I doubt scraping over the line against westmeath will hardly encourage derry that after 3 bad beatings that they are contenders again Mayo by 6

I've been thinking since watching the final play of Mayo v Dublin last weekend. What if Mayo had done to Dublin what Dublin did to them in the last seconds of the final a few years ago. Kicking the ball away from Cluxton and then pulling the Dublin players to the ground. Would the powers that be have stood idley by like then.

It is more or less 6 rounds instead of 7 for the All-Ireland series. The benefits are knockout jeopardy football for the 8 losers in round 2. One round less will allow a rest weekend after the league finals.

Abandoned after 2 years due to COVID. 2 groups of 4 with only 2 to progress to the semis. At least 3 strong teams in each group as we found out in 2018. There were great days out with big attendances like clones in 18 and mayo in Killarney in 19. The current format is awful. We have spent 5 weekends getting rid of 4 of 16 teams with the public voting with their feet. At least we have proper championship starting this weekend. I believe we need a third football competition. Some teams being hammered in both competitions at the moment.
