So our McGrath Cup campaign has come to a finish and 2/3 players have put their hands up for selection throughout the league campaign but nothing more than that. Derry will be strong, not sure if they'll have the Glen players lining out but even without they'll come down looking for the win. Kerry need to get off to a good start here I think and we need to use the league to build momentum and also blood 2/3 players at the same time.
Team I would go with would be as follows:
1) Shane Ryan 2) Graham O’Sullivan 3) Jason Foley 4) Tom O'Sullivan 5) Brian Beaglaoich 6) Paul Murphy/ Mike Breen if fit 7) Gavin White 8) Joe O'Connor 9) Diarmuid O'Connor 10) Micheal Burns 11) Sean O'Shea 12) Cillian Burke 13) Dylan Geaney 14) Killian Spillane 15) Stephen O'Brien
A few fellas that could also make their way into that team, most notably Sean O'Brien & the 2 Cliffords. Not sure what that status is on the likes of Tadgh Morley Tony Brosnan, Stefan Okunbor but I would think it'll be a few rounds yet before we see them.

Derry have won the McKenna Cup against a Donegal team that I think will win D2.
So Derry will be a serious test come Sat night.
Winning at home is imperative in my opinion.
Regarding the team,
Seanie needs to stay at 14.
Both Clifford's I expect to return.

What I’d go with
1. Shane Ryan 2. Graham O’Sullivan 3. Jason Foley 4. Tom O’Sullivan 5. Brian O’Beaglaoich 6. Tadhg Morley 7. Gavin White 8. Joe O’Connor 9. Barry Dan O’Sullivan 10. Adrian Spillane 11. Dylan Geaney 12. Cillian Burke 13. Paudie Clifford 14. Sean O’Shea 15. Killian Spillane
We need Morley at 6 with Breen out, I don’t think he’s been injured so he should be good to go. Start David on the bench, Seanie and Killian as the 2 inside deserves another run so the need to start him isn’t there.
That’s a strong 15 and with the insurance policy of David on the bench should deliver the win that’s needed to start the league.

After watching Derry last night, it’s going to be a slow burner next weekend. Derry dominated MF, Roger’s was excellent, so a good test of our MF on the way. I think we need an experienced 15 starting next week, would not fancy too many new comers, this will be a stiff test, made more challenging by the way Derry play. Looks like a low scoring game if last night anything to go by. Draw might not be too far off the mark.

A lot will depend on whether Conor Glass plays or not.
That performance today was a masterclass covering the whole pitch - a leader whose main attribute is sheer common sense. Always takes the right option.
Together with Rogers they must be the leading midfield partnership.

I agree though that himself and Rodgers are the best in thr country.

Have to agree with the above posters that Glass is some player and him and Rodgers are the best midfield pairing in the country only Fenton Dublin is at their level we are lucky that glass is missing at the weekend.Big week for Jack as he will want to hit the ground running especially with a home fixture will be interesting whether the Clifford’s play a part I think they might especially with Paudie as captain . Should be a cracking atmosphere in Tralee sat evening ..

Jack will probably want to win all home games in the league so a strong team will be selected. I think on current form five of the forwards will be the 2 Cliffords, Seanie, Dylan, and Killian. The other position is up for grabs, it may be a new player that Jack thinks has done enough to earn the spot or an established player coming back like Paul Geaney. I hope he builds a forward line that is made up of creative players that the opposition sees as threats, work rate alone is not enough considering the players available.
Midfield is likely to be the 2 O'Connors with Barry Dan as an option.
It doesn't appear as if any new plyer will claim a place in defence.

Hopefully the weather is not too bad. Will be great test for Joe OConnor at midfield. His fitness this year is key to our chances. We need to be able to match Derry and Dublin midfields

Derry have hit the ground running early round of McKenna,. They have evolved nicely over the last two years, add in an expected “new couch bounce”. Like a lot have said above, a lot will depend on Conor Glass, surely, he will be afforded time to recover and, in all honesty, celebrate yesterday, truth be told, without him An Glenn would not have won, apart from the obvious goal, he was outstanding when his club needed him the most. A few players have put paws up in early season, namely Joe O’Connor, Dylan Geaney, Killian Bourke. Others have slipped namely Dylan Casey and one who I had expected to grab the McGrath Cup Dara Roche, would still give a league start, but we are on borrowed time. Moynihan too has plateaued a bit. It is a worry that no new defender as emerged, bar maybe Sean O’Brien, but he is versatile. Paul was well beaten I though at weekend, Morley was not listed as one of the injured few, I was hoping to see more of Breen at six, but injury again rob of a league game or two.
With a mix of old, new, and last chances etc, the XV I would like to see take the field on Saturday evening would be: Shane Ryan, Graham O’Sullivan, Jason Foley, Tom Sullivan, Brión O’Beagleoich, Gavin White, Sean O’Brien, Joe O’Connor, Diarmuid O’Connor, Killian Bourke, Paudie Clifford, Dylan Geaney, Killian Spillane, Seanie Shea and Stephen O’Brien.

There is no doubting the merit of Conor Glass and his display yesterday will long be remembered. Now the memory of our game against Derry is beginning to fade at this stage but I don’t think he made a significant contribution in that match. Brendan Rodgers was their main man in that area ,and at that , only when Diarmuid O’Connor got his silly. black card.
As regards Joe O’Connor. I think we should dismiss the Tipperary and Limerick games in assessing the claims of any novices. The Cork game is a reasonable barometer. It appears that a lot of people here were more impressed with Joe in that game than I was. I was expecting more and I will be expecting more. If it is to be the two O’Connors on Saturday then , as. Brendan Kennelly might say, “up and at them”. It should be very informative.
It is always fascinating when a player’s progression stalls. I suppose there can be a myriad reasons. I am thinking in particular of Darragh Roche and Dylan Casey. After his displays for Austin Stacks a couple of years ago I was convinced Dylan would have grabbed one of the Kerry full back positions by now. Sadly not. Why the regression? Ditto Darragh Roche , perhaps to a lesser extent. He seems to to be slower and clumsier. Too much time in the gym?

Derry are the form team at the moment and I think this will be Kerrys toughest league game of the year.
I expect both Clifford's in the 26 as its a short season and it starts on Sat.
As regards midfield I felt last year that it wasn't the midfield but the HF line that was the area of concern.
Positions are more fluid now and looking back at Dublin you'd Howard in the HF line fielding ball last year.
We need height in there and I hope Jack recognises that and plays Burke in there and possibly Ronan Buckley on the other side with Paidi at 11.
That gives us 4 options for long kickouts.
Really looking forward to the track down from the North East on Sat with the optimism following a county like Kerry brings.
I hope and expect a big crowd and a few nice pints to break dry January in town after.

We need more power in midfield and half forward than last year but also need more scoring threat from there too I would go with Diarmuid and Barry sat evening with either Burke or Buckley at 12 Paudie at 11 and Moynihan or o Brien at 10 I wasn’t very impressed with Joe on Saturday and would use him off the bench this weekend

Courtesy of Tony Leen from Irish Examiner: An update from Jack O'Connor regarding injuries.
After Kerry’s opening two games, at home to Derry Saturday and away to Monaghan, there is a week’s break before Mayo come to Tralee in Round 3. That looks a realistic target for the Cliffords, and possibly a number of other returning Kerry players.
Listry’s Ruairi Murphy is the only long-term injury after a serious hamstring injury. Defender Mike Breen damaged ankle ligaments recently and will be out for around six weeks, while Stefan Okunbor and keeper Shane Murphy are also sidelined with recent hamstring injuries.
“In terms of the other lads, Diarmuid O’Connor wouldn’t have a lot of football but got a few minutes in Cork at the weekend. Tadhg Morley was late coming back to us after getting married. Tony Brosnan has an issue with his back, and Paul Geaney and his wife had a baby in the last few days so he is tending to matters far more important than football

So Kerry less the Cliffords against Derry less the Glen trio of Glass, McFaul and Doherty. Jack O’Connor vs Mickey Harte in his first competitive game in charge of Derry. Under lights in Tralee.
At the very least it’s going to be a very interesting game.

www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-41314987.htmlI'd imagine we will have a similar team to which started on Saturday. Kerry will need to be patient if Derry sit deep as they are likely to do. I'd really prefer not to see Murphy at 6 but based on the above article it'll likely be the case. Stefan Okunbor injured again is just so unfortunate himself and Mike Breen are 2 lads that needed this game more than most. While I expected the Clifford's to be in the 26 in retrospect its a good call and Jack is protecting the two lads and I'm happy to see that. We can still win this game but we need to patient.

Not sure totally what route Jack will go with picking for Saturday. How many raw lads will he be willing to pitch in is the question?
For example would Joe O’Connor and Seán O’Brien be excessively raw as a pair in the middle? Possibly. Therefore Barry Dan or Adrian Spillane may come into the reckoning. Derry have a very good midfielder in Rogers, that’s assuming Glass doesn’t play. Which would present an even bigger challenge.
Have Cillian Burke, the younger Geaneys done enough to merit starts? In my view Dylan Geaney should have. Cillian Burke hasn’t been bad either so I would start him wing forward.
Although not ideal, as others said, I expect Paul Murphy to continue in the 6 jersey. They’ll be trying to free him up to fill the sweeper role.
Could be along lines of below: 1.Ryan 2.Graham 3.Foley 4.Tom O’Sullivan 5.Begley 6.Paul Murphy 7.White 8.Joe O’Connor 9.Barry Dan 10.Adrian Spillane 11.Seán O’Sé 12.Cillian Burke 13.Conor Geaney 14.Killian Spillane 15.Dylan Geaney
Seán O’Brien Diarmuid O’Connor - will start if even 75% fit Stephen O’Brien Micheál Burns Dara Moynihan Ronan Buckley Dylan Casey Those would be most likely to come in off bench.
Could do with Diarmuid in midfield obviously but he has very little work done I hear.

I don't think Murphy has the attributes for six, he owes Kerry nothing, and not wanting to sound disrespectful, I think if we were picking our best XV he wouldn't be starting and invariably would be coming off the bench.
The majority of backs mentions all play number six for their clubs, so the position is for from alien to them, but more so the norm. admittedly, some haven't filled the role at intercounty level or may be better suited to the wing at this level but as I said, most are club or divisional center backs.
There is no reason why Graham or White could not fill in as a short term solution until Tadgh or any of the injured trio return.

It’s a potential weakness. Graham could certainly play that role too but then do you play Murphy corner back? That doesn’t fit well either. S

Okunbor and Breen are injured and Tadgh is unavailable.. for me neither Nagle nor Casey have done themselves any favours, Damian Bourke didn’t do anything wrong similar with Paudie O’Leary but in honesty one cannot consider weakened Tipp or Limerick as testers… Same with Heinrich… couldn’t fault but not really tested. If one is considering Graham at six, then O'Beaglaoich to the corner has more balance with maybe Sean O'Brien on the wing for physicality and Gavin on the other wing... these two wing men are capable of attacking and breaking the line... Depending on teh availability of Derry players, we might do well to get a result on Saturday night.

I think this will be a really difficult game on Sat.
Ive a feeling it'll be similar to the Armagh game in Tralee last year where Derry sit deep and look to break quick to McGuigan.
Kerry need to be very patient and not get frustrated.
If we get a result in Sat it'll be a brilliant start to the year.

6 weeks out for Mike Breen is a tough blow. Agree with Horse on Casey & Nagle, others also really need to start putting the hand up soon but I fear for Casey in terms of time running out for him to convince. Looks like we are going to be VERY light on depth on Saturday night so might need to get early pints in as it could be rough evening against Derry. They will have a few absentees themselves of course but just appear from even McKenna cup to be ahead of where we are at.

With all the absentees isn’t it a shame that Dan O’Donoghue is not available/in favour. There you have a hardy buck who would fill a variety of positions in the backs , including CHB.
