That was a 1 point hammering if we are honest. Derry had our number in most areas of the pitch. Helped of course by Dublin (Derry) Joe who seemed to his lips pursed every time a Kerry man engaged an oak leafer. The gameplan and tactics are as astounding as they are infuriating. Why do we pass up the chance to play the ball in quick, only to do multiple circumnavigations of a square area around the 45 to kick the ball into a contest anyway? If thats what we are going to do, why not do it at the earliest opportunity before the defence has time to set. Very poor execution in taking our chances and making the wrong decisions. Really up against it now in the rest of the league. Sorry, i know others are seeing the positives…. But the realist in me feels we are going backwards & stagnating. I see no innovation or ingenuity in the last year.

For the team we fielded we did well enough - could have won it if we took our goal chances.
Disappointed that our midfield did not perform better but they are inexperienced at this level and hopefully they learn from it. They need to attack the high ball and have the confidence to go for it with too hands - thought they were caught jumping from a standing position too often and then went to punch.
No sign of scoring forwards with limited impact from five of the starting six on the score sheet.
Under pressure on our kick outs and yet our experienced full back leaves a harmless ball run out of play rather than collect it and play out - a small thing but for me is evidence of a lack of smarts which is largely missing in this current team.
Too pedestrian in the first half in particular and we came into the game when we increased our intensity and pace in the second half.
My conclusion is some of the older fringe players showed why they are fringe players, some of the younger lads need another opportunity to show they are learning and improving. Expect Jack to continue to keep our big guns in reserve and give lads a chance to put up their hands for summer football.

The scoreline flattered us to behonest and if we took any points last night it would have been an injustice to Derry.
Joe McQuinlan was heavily critised after the semi final last year from and we got very little from him last night.
Having said that before we are critical of the ref we have to look at ourselves.
We looked heavy legged in that first half and against very difficult conditions we needed the ball to stick in that FF line and it didn't.
To be fair the thr new lads they rarely meet a better midfield and although tough on OBrien I felt given the conditions Barry Dan should have started.
One thing that frustrates the life out of me was our reluctance to take a shot in that 2nd half.
A Kerry footballer should be able to kick a point at home with the wind.
One other point I simply couldn't ignore it last night.. Auld boys shouting to kick it in when there is A nobody in there and B its not the night for it.

As for Dublin Joe! I'm not usually a man to have a go at referees at a game but how this individual is still allowed officiate Kerry games is beyond a joke. I have absolutely no time for him and true to form he rode us off into the sunset! Bad cess to him. Derry were dirty, Seanie got no protection and Derry should have lost at least 1-2 more bodies given the 'tackles' they were putting it. How Lynch's time wasting was indulged was also disgraceful. Meanwhile.... "Former Tyrone and Louth boss Harte, who was taking charge of Derry for the first time in a league match, believes his team won despite decisions not going their way at Austin Stack Park.
"On many occasions we felt we worth a whistle or two and it's difficult to play when you have to come through that in a very intense game like that," he added.
"I wasn't particularly encourage by what I saw out there. Fair play to the players, they hung there and never gave up.
"We had to work really hard for anything we got and I think we worked hard for things we didn't even get. It's a good outcome for us - we worked hard enough to get a win."".................................................... Mickey really is a shameless git.

We should not be losing at home regardless of the circumstances. If memory serves its 2019 against Mayo the last time the Kerry colours were lowered in Tralee. I made for the Slieve Mish instead of the Sportsfield but after a pint I didn't feel quiet as annoyed as I was exiting Austin Stacks. This was a locked and loaded Derry side, pretty much the team you'd expect them to produce in an AI semi-final or final. The fact the Glen boys were gang pressed onto the bus for Kerry tells you Mickey wanted a win here at all costs. He got one against an experimental Kerry side - but only just. I was despondent at half time but the wind was fierce and Kerry finally woke up soon after the interval. We could have, nay should have, won but butchered so many easy chances and Ryan's decision making at the death was idiotic. Himself and Stephen should be having a serious conversation with themselves this morning. While I'm on the war path a few posters would need to catch themselves on to use our Northern brethren's turn of phrase. Kerry are 'ordinary' without the Cliffords? Your talking about a team that was he 2022 AI champs and a kick of the ball from back to back winners. There's nothing 'ordinary' about Seanie or Ryan, Morely, Tom Sull, Jason Foley Gavin White - need I go on. Great win for the Farney last night, a result Kerry and Derry fans celebrated together in the pub after. Some things never change, outside the M50 is a cold country for the Dubs - as it should always be! Big test now to go up to the stoney grey soil and get a result. I'm confident we can - if we don't the panic stations will be set. Until then keep the faith. An Riocht Abu! The referee did look to be one sided. Actually I thought Paul Murphy should have gotten a penalty between the 46th and 47th minutes. Clearly and visibly inside the square a defender made an effort to reach in and dispossess him but only succeeded in pushing Paul forward to the ground. The ref was in clear sight of it, no reaction. In the ensuing play a defender took a dive because Stephen O'Brien was thinking about tackling him. Two let offs in 4 seconds with their goal under siege? This time he threw it up.

I actually thought that the Ref played overtime to try and draw the game. Derry very impressive. Defended in numbers and counter attacked with speed and strength.

A miserable evening in Tralee in every respect. The result is not entirely unexpected but our performance over the full game was disappointing. Even allowing for the fact that we we were playing against the elements our first half display bordered on the abysmal. Inevitably we improved in the second half with the wind and the rain at our back. I suppose we could have pulled it off but it would have been daylight robbery in the evening.
One has to be impressed with Derry. They are tight resolute defenders and transition with lightning speed , both aspects of play knitted together by a smashing midfield partnership. It looked ominous from an early stage as it became clear that a combine harvester could lumber through our midfield and half back line. The Derry players are far slicker than a combine harvester hence the nightmarish first half.
I am not sure if we have a kick out strategy. Time and time again in the first half we drove the ball to a crowded terrace side without profit. When you are struggling at midfield why not split the midfield for your own kick outs? Conversely, Derry got most of their kick outs without too much stress , even when they went a man down. Admittedly of course they had a strong midfield but they also avariciously contested the breaks. You may not be strong in the air but anybody should be capable of winning a breaking ball. Talking about midfield , young Sean O’Brien was playing not too far away from me. It was clear from the word go he was suffering from a paralyzing dose of stage fright. As cruel as it may appear I thought it was appropriate to replace him when they did. He will have better days.
A recurring complaint I have about Kerry for a while is that , unlike a lot of counties , we do not seem to have a player who can put his head down and take off like a scalded cat and drive into defenders in hope , at least , of drawing a foul and a handy free as Derry often did yesterday. That type of player needs pace and ball control. I have in mind the likes of Darragh Moynihan and Michael Burns. Could they not be directed to assume that role on occasions. I am not talking about blindly soloing towards the corner flag but rather directly down the centre. Perhaps those boys don’t like life in the fast lane. I can imagine Cillian Burke adopting that function in time but he is only learning his trade at this stage.
Matters improved at little as the second half advanced , but progress was painfully slow. Apart from lacking some direct runners we also lacked a player with the ability to kick a point from 30/35 metres with the wind and rain at his back. That was demoralizing . In that regard, for a man who plays with a lot of success at full forward for his club, Shane Ryan looked very uncertain when he came outfield . But I suppose it is indicative of the poverty of our attack when one is hoping our goalie would kick a score or two.
Brian O’ Beaglaoich looked tired as he did against Cork. I felt Dylan Casey did well and of course expertly took his goal. One needs a CHB who will steadfastly man the centre position. It is not in Tom’s DNA to do that. Diarmuid certainly improved matters when he came on as did Barry Dan to a lesser extent. Dylan Geaney showed in flashes but his effort needs to be more sustained. Sean O’Shea worked his socks off with no help from Dublin Joe. Isn’t that a surprise! Talking about Dublin Joe, he was very harsh on Jason on two occasions in the second half. Shane McGuigan got a free when he appeared to charge forward and another occasion when he pulled Jason for touching the ball on the ground when I felt it hopped. Two handy frees.
All is not lost but losing your home NFL games piles on the pressure in a very competitive division. However. Derry were worthy winners.

Defeat was not unexpected in the circumstances against a very good team like Derry but it didn’t make it any easier to digest.
The selected team looked a tad odd to me when it was released and whatever the management were thinking, suffice to say it didn’t work. Tom at 6, our midfield pairing and the forward structure were glaring weaknesses. Tadhg Morley will hopefully return at 6. Diarmuid will be starting midfield. Obviously the Clifford’s will return up front eventually. Things aren’t totally bleak. Things that would frustrate me from this game and in general though would include: the terrible performance on our own and opposition kickouts. This improved a bit in second half but on breaking ball we were very poor all game. The lack of imagination in our attack. The amount of times that a ball could have been played forward and instead was shovelled backwards or carried was frustrating. Yes Derry had 15 behind even with the wind but there were opportunities missed or players are fearful of giving away the ball. Then to compound things, Gavin White decides to launch a good diagonal ball when it’s Moynihan inside near square! You might aswell hand the ball back to Derry. Speaking of Moynihan - he’s getting massive faith put in him by management that doesn’t seem justified to me. I don’t see what he excels at and he creates very little. Killian Spillane was anonymous. Not a good sign.
On the positive I thought both Geaneys showed flashes of good stuff and more game time will bring them on. Conor is the kind of corner forward who can terrorise backs with his acceleration on the ball. He had one bad miss after burning his man on the end line right in front of Mitchels end but he took the goal well and I’d like to see more of him. Graham O’Sullivan had a good game. Very solid. As was Foley who got zero protection and did well enough on McGuigan. Dublin Joe didn’t help him but not even going into that.
We’ve a tough one away to a Monaghan side who’ll be bouncing now next week so need adjustments and a lot more urgency.

Not an unexpected loss given the strength of both exams that took the field. Could someone please enlighten me in what management see in Burns and Moynihan.
Burns gave away 2 stupid free last night when we were trying to hem Derry in. And he went for a shot that was blocked down that was never on given the proximity of the Derry defenders.
I know we are not a one man team but the way we played last night you could say we are a 2 man team. Without Morley at 6 our defence is more open than the Suez canal. And without the younger Clifford upfront we don't seem to have any buzz in attack. I would be all for giving the new lads and other run out the next day but maybe start DOC to give us some bit of a platform on the middle.
Monaghan have plenty of hard runners so it should be a good test. I think Tom was too loose to play centre back last night but, it might be worth persisting with as we need to develop a capable back up to Morley.

It's impossible to enforce cos you can just say a players injured. Pulled a hamstring in the warmup. Dummy teams are part and parcel of the game so just accept it. Alternatively it should be like soccer where the team is named an hour before. I don't mind either way but I do like the team named the Friday before as it's something to chat about and builds anticipation. I disagree.I would allow for injuries but if a player is named and then they say he is injured he is not allowed play any part in the game at all. It's too stringent too enforce. The manager could say "He's not fit enough to start but we want him on the bench for maybe 10 minutes at the end" There's no way to enforce it either way. I don't think it matters either way.

They have a rule for this for championship games. The 26 man panel must be released to Croke park by 11am on the day before the match. The only change allowed to this panel is if one of the 2 goalies gets injured. No outfield player can be replaced. Why is this rule not introduced for the national League?

There seems to be a fear with many of the Kerry players to take on shots from scoring distance.3 points from play by a Kerry team playing at home is just not good enough. Many thought we would have a golden age after all our minor sucess but we have become so negative against big teams.A change of style is needed.

I only buy a program for the teams and never read anything else in it. I know it's only €3 but that's not the point.

I think that this game was a win, not a loss. We did not get the points, but we did better than expected and for Derry it was a loss. Derry last year won many neutrals' hearts. They're a good team and have some top class players. And then Mickey Harte took over. Like every team he ever managed the mantra is win at all costs and be as cynical as you get away with. Already they play like a Mickey team with 15 behind the ball and some Derry players were mouthing all throughout the game. The readiness to pick up cards too is going to be a problem. Realistically they should have had 2 black cards and 5 yellows, in what wasm't a dirty game at all. Imagine when they come up against bitter rivals like Tyrone. Bringing the Glen lads in is a mistake as well in my opinion and Derry looked much fitter than Kerry too. I know that Mickey has to win games and hit the ground running, but it is hard to peak in the McKenna Cup and keep that momentum going during the league and championship. I'm assuming that neither Mickey nor the Derry players mind if they become one hit wonders if they win Sam this year and never again. I think we all know that for Kerry managers and players one Celtic cross isn't a good return. I wish Derry all the best and hope they do win something, but I think they have lost the hearts and minds of many neutrals.
The game itself was a game of two halves. Derry dominated the first half, Kerry just about won the second half. Kerry wasted 3 goal chances and had some awful wides so a 1 point loss could easily have been a good win. In the first half Derry sliced through the Kerry defence at will to score and that is because we have no centre back. As brilliant a player as Tom O'Sullivan is, he is not a sweeper and not a centre back. Mike Breen seems to be the only option other than Morley we have. During halftime that was somewhat rectified by tighter man marking and the Kerry backs sticking with their men. Another big difference was the defensive input of the forwards, especially Dara Moynihan, who had an awful first half in my opinion. To me though a forward should score and that is where Kerry were let down. Sean O'Shea and the two Geaneys seem to be the only forwards willing to have a shot at the posts and the ability to score. As much as we all love Killian Spillane he needs to start to get more than a few nice scores here and there. I hope he shoots the lights out in Monaghan, otherwise he might not see much more time in a Kerry jersey. Burns and Cillian Burke also weren't up to it against Derry. It is early days yet, but players need to show they're rrady for the championship in these matches. Stephen O'Brien had a big impact when he came on, but also wasted a clear goal. The other 2 goal chances were equally butchered. By contrast I found Conor Geaney hungry and willing to score when he came on. 1 goal is not good enough though for 34 minutes of football. By contrast McGuigan got half of the Derry scores, with 8 other players all scoring a point. If we had 8 players all scoring a point each the game would have been won. Good, the bright thing is that we're missing Morley, the Cliffords, Barry and Paul Geaney and still should have won against the strongest Derry side possible. I hope the players that disappointed in Tralee, take the warning signs and show in Clones why they should be on the championship panel.
On a side note what happened to Colm Moriarty of Dingle, Paul Walsh of Brosna, Michael Potts of Dr Crokes, Daniel O’Brien of Glenflesk, Micheál Foley of Ballydonoghue, Jack Morgan of Austin Stacks and Andrew Barry of Na Gaeil? All promising talents at some point, but none have made it to the senior ranks.

Well overall should be happy enough with the new players I mean two midfielders starting together for the first time two half forwards debut and a corner back who only played a handful of games I’m happy enough even though we could have won it in the end. That was a very strong Derry team a full team so I would give those players another chance next week but knowing Jack he would panic and bring back the Clifford’s but he could have them on the bench too I guess but who knows what he’s thinking. We have to find two or three new starters at least for the season.

First game of the league and we could have won a game that we should have been in no position to win after our first half performance.
Negatives: Porous defence when ran at, acres of space in front of Mcguigan and Foley (they never allowed that), ball movement was lateral and slow, lack of kickout strategy, poor tackling.
Positives: strong second half performace, Diarmuid O'Connor, Graham O'Sullivan.
Was a good atmosphere at the ground and was a lovely touch to see Derry flags flying in Tralee. Nice touch. Derry fans seemed to know that Glen boys were going to play well before the start. Can seem some hamstring injuries coming unless these boys get a break sometime soon.
Hopefully we see a more structured defensive approach against Monaghan. No centre back for us the last day and Derry got their scores much easier. Pity that Mike Breen is injured again. Hope O'Brien gets another run midfield next week although Barry Dan was very solid the last day.
Overall the poor mixed with the middling but great run out against a Derry team missing only McEvoy.

Never post in the aftermath of a game as emotions can be high. I left Austin Stack Park, thinking we were a tad unlucky and could have at least got a share of the spoils, but in all honesty, and having watched the game again at home that night, Derry just about deserved the one-point win.
When the game is broken down, this was a near strength Derry side, boosted by the newly crowned All Ireland club lads, against a Kerry side missing the centre axis of Centre Back, at least one mid-fielder, our forty-yard man and full forward.
I was disappointed to certain aspects of our play, I was in the “Shed” right behind the goals and had a great view of our (lack of) movement for Shane Ryan’s kickouts, it was obvious Kerry’s play was to keep the ball away from Glass, however with Lynch on the terrace side, covering that pocket and against a strong breeze, Derry had us squeezed and we invariably went long. The only two backs making shapes for the short option was at stages Graham, and more so O’Beagleoich. For that reason, I was surprised to see him withdrawn at HT, I felt his replacement didn’t offer as much in this regard. It was a baptism of fire for young Sean O’Brien, felt his was unlucky to be called ashore so early but the harsh reality was, we couldn’t; buy a kickout at that juncture but Derry’s pairing are prob in the top three in Ireland at present. Our movement up front was poor, I felt neither Killian and Burns didn’t don’t do themselves any favours, I actually would have left O’Brien on, and withdrawn Burns earlier for a more physical player and try to pull Derry wide. Considering Bourke’s physique this may have given us a better platform if mirrored other side of field, with two deep and two centred.
Geaney is a fine finisher and passer but winning the 50/50 ball and creating that initial space, isn’t to the standard of Seanie or Paudie but look maybe time will tell.
The fact that at the end, our full back line was the most prominent in front of goals tells its own story. Dylan Casey had a fine game going forward, but lacks in discipline tackles, the basic art, he is first and foremost a defender. His counterpart in the other corner, well that was Graham’s best game in a Kerry jersey since the 2022 final. He’d a great game, great ball retention and pass for Casey, and his mark and point to level at on 70 minutes, excellent.
There will be few changes for next week, early doors White went to six on Saturday night, this was not a success, either was Paul when he came in. looking at Monaghan on Saturday night, they run hard through the centre. This is the main area of concern and an issue for discussion on the other thread. I expect one of not both Fossa boys on the panel next week. Two losses are not an option

Nobody has empathy for Kerry. On balance Derry were the better team and bar the last 20 mins we were well beaten. I'm not trying to be negative but that's the game as I saw it. The scoreline didn't reflect the story of the game for me.

This was right in front of me, I thought at the time it was a perfectly times shoulder, just a wee man against a more physical unit... nothing untoward in at.. Dublin Joe got that one right and the ball on the ground by Foley, he was right there too but I did think the "steps" rule went out the window at stages, in particular in the first half.
Derry did kick some monster scores though, great view from the Mitchel's end.
I thought the ref for Dublin and Monaghan was excellent, it was like he had no whistle at all, just let play flow... fair play to him.

Two losses are not an option Very balanced assessment. Funny to see other posters losing their nut over a one point defeat to a full strength Derry team... In the first round of the league.
