Would Eoin Liston be there, he played league in 1977 and made a comeback in 1993....

3 excellent guesses...the Top 3 are: Mick O'Dwyer 19 years and 4 months Pat Spillane 19 years 2 months Mick O'Connell 19 years and 10 days. Numbers 4 and 5 on the list are tricky... Dan O'Keefe for one of them?

Tomas O Se surely was there 17 years anyway but maybe theres somebody else there longer and seems too obvious.
seems 12-14 years was the average for our big names, going in at 18/19 and retiring at 32/33.

Interesting question. Of course it is complicated by the fact that the noble contributions of the top three were not continuous. Pat Spillane missed a season or two due to injury. Both Mickos missed a season or two due to retirement, each making a comeback with Seamus Murphy and Johnny Culloty..
Jack O’Shea made his debut in the NFL of 1976 I think. He certainly was there in the championship of 1977 until 1992, uninterrupted service. Should he get the accolades?

It depends on what is meant by 'longest serving' is it just being a panel member or does it involve playing competitively? Panels were different in the era of only 3 subs per match. Tomas was a fringe panel member in 1997 but didn't play until 1998 if memory serves me correctly. He played til 2013. Darragh was there from 1994 and stayed on til 2009 so that's also 15 years.

Would Johnny Culloty be in top 5? Johnny won an All-Ireland medal as a corner forward in 1955. He subsequently sustained a very severe knee injury resulting in him being sidelined for three or four years . The treatment for knee injuries in those days was just the application of a bandage! He returned as goalie in 1959 and was there until circa 1970 Johnny was a top class hurling goalie as well. As somebody else said , Dan O’Keeffe was there for years as also . Danno was born in Cork. I mentioned Jacko already in the context of uninterrupted service. Did Jacko ever miss a major match due to injury? Did he ever come off due to injury? He obviously had an ideal anatomical makeup which was a major factor in making him the supreme athlete he was . Possibly the best we have seen. All going according to plan, David C may close the gap.

I'm including underage appearances as well, so Bomber Liston might be a few years shorter than others.
But numbers 4 and 5 have not yet been mentioned...
Will update Top 10 later tonight.

I thought it was at senior level so this line is confusing. In the old days some great seniors never played under age, politics, remote club etc.

Brendan Lynch played from 1968 to 1976. He played Kerry minor in 1965,1966 and 1967 , if that grade is relevant.

The question was "What player has the longest playing span for Kerry?" This means who has the longest time span between their first appearance in a game for Kerry and their last. It includes minor, senior, junior and U21. It does not include hurling. It does not include being an unused sub.
Clearly, some posters never listened to the teacher when "Read the question carefully" was mentioned/drummed into them.
Top 10 are:
Mick O'Dwyer 7/4/1954 11/25/1973 Pat Spillane 6/30/1972 8/11/1991 Mick O'Connell 7/3/1955 7/14/1974
Ger Power 7/20/1969 7/3/1988 Paul Galvin 7/9/1997 9/20/2015 Paddy B Brosnan 5/27/1934 7/20/1952
Tomás Ó'Sé 7/14/1995 9/1/2013 Dan O'Keeffe 7/13/1930 8/29/1948 Tim Landers 5/29/1927 7/8/1945 Marc Ó'Sé 7/27/1998 8/28/2016
I'll run another list for Championship games only for those who might be interested in that.

Does anyone know Kerrys top scorer from play ever in the championship.Probably old records dont say so maybe from the 70s.Pat Spillane def up there high id guess along with Mikey Sheehy.I dont know the answer.im just asking. It is quite difficult to be exact on who scored what, as it depends on what newspaper you consult for the facts! And that is before splitting an individual's return down to frees, from play, penalty, etc...not to mention the mark in recent years. I'm not sure if Pat Spillane ever took a free attempting to score for Kerry...can you ciarraimick? I'd say his 19-122 in championship football must be 100% from play. Mikey Sheehy would typically kick about 6 points in a game with 3 from frees and score a few penalties in his 29 championship goals as well. There is about 110 points between Pat and Mikey, and my guess is that Mikey definitely scored 5 or 6 penalties plus 90 frees, which would mean Pat scored more from play. Now Colm Copper leads the way with 23-283 (352 points)...how many penalties and frees did the "elusive butterfly" (definitely the greatest compliment for a forward ever...thank you veteran) contribute? I would doubt that Colm kicked the difference between Pat and him (a total of 173 points) in frees/penalties. So my vote says Gooch top scorer from play, Pat Spillane second and Mikey Sheehy third. But I have nothing to back that up, stats-wise.

Pat Spillane would be the highest scorer from play, in that all his scores were from play, he was on the 2 Johnnies Pobcast this week and said he never took frees. Terrible Talk is good for these stats but it doesn't say if scores were from play or frees.

Terrible Talk is good for these stats but it doesn't say if scores were from play or frees. At a guess I would be surprised if Gooch isn't top in terms of from play. When Gooch came into the team Dara O'Cinneide would have been the main man on deadballs. Bryan Sheehan was there for a long stretch while Gooch was there and would have been taking pretty much any of the long-distance sort of ones. Sheehan finished with 6-161 in championship football and a very large percentage of the points in that would have been deadballs. I do have a memory of Bryan Sheehan scoring at least one penalty for Kerry but I'm not sure if it was league or championship. Then there's a fair few other lads who would have been on the team during the time Gooch was there who were well able to kick a dead-ball. The difference between Pat and Gooch's total is 173 points which is 49.15% of Gooch's total championship score. I don't think there's any way that over his whole career that pretty much half of Gooch's scores in the championship came from deadballs, especially when you look at the quality of the dead-ball kickers who were on the team while he was there. As a reference point the championship top-scorer Cillian O'Connor from Mayo (who would have taken a much higher percentage of all Mayo's dead-balls) while he was playing managed to amass 33.25% of his scores from play.

Don't forget Mike Frank Russell took a fair few frees as well when on the same team as Gooch.

I think there is a player being overlooked for scores from play and that is John Egan. In his time Kerry often put up huge scores and John would score goals and points a lot more than Colm would have scored in the era of sweepers and "Ulster defences". This is a true story. I remember back when they were winning, discussing the Kerry team with with a friend from Galway. He was talking about stopping the scores that Kerry always got. I said that Mikey could pull anything in a split second, and that John Egan could always manoeuvre a situation that the defence could not deal with. "And after years defences still cant stop Egan" was his reply.

Kerryexile, years ago when the Golden Years video came out I gave it to a rugby aficionado friend of mine who had only a slight acquaintance with football. He later returned it with the comment “ John Egan was the man” .

Brilliant Ballhopper. Watching that does a man good. Without any shadow of doubt the best team of all time. That goal finished by Jack O' must be the greatest goal of all time. And none of those players ever heard of "Shot Selection" during their their playing careers.

I agree with Veteran. Ger Power lined out in AI finals in both the half back line and the half forward line so no one knew more than he about turning defence into attack, which is what was included in the videos. But they all - Jack O', Spillane, Ogie and the rest made huge contributions keep that engine purring.

What a privilege to grow up watching that group of players. Not a weak link anywhere.
1979 probably the peak of their powers where other years were effected a bit by injuries.
Growing up behind enemy lines it gave me great ammunition and sources of banter. It still does to be fair.
I feel old now that two of my sons pals are called in to the Dublin senior training panel. Unfortunately they are no longer welcome in my house🤣
