Hi All, New to the forum so I hope you don't mind me asking a quick question. A friend of mine from Dublin is researching a book at the moment and has asked me the question 'Has anyone NOT born in Kerry ever played for Kerry'. I scratched my head but can't think of any but I'm not the best person to answer the question either. If any of you can help I'd greatly appreciate it. There are loads of examples. Not Vinnie Murphy examples, but Tommy Doyle and Darren O'Sullivan who were born abroad (Chicago and London). I would guess also technical answers would be people born in maternity hospitals in Cork. I presume there is a sprinkling of those. Probably hard enough to find out about the maternity hospitals - wouldn't imagine that it is something folk would be broadcasting. I think I read Stefan Okunbor was something like 3 or 4 when he moved to Ireland.

Darren o Sullivan lived in London for most of his childhood before moving to kerry, not sure if he was born in England

What was the criteria used here? Was it (a) the best players that took part in the championship (b) the players who actually performed best in the championship (c) just players who played on the most successful championship teams or (d) something else? It's not terribly clear and it just comes across as ridiculous tbh.

No idea, I recall seeing the entry forms, but it was loose at best. look like most other "selections" 0r all star teams, you could sit five lads at the bar to pick a XV and you'd have between three and four different selections... usually such selections are just thought provoking and conversations starters.... It's like comparing Mikey Sheehy, Colm Cooper and David Clifford... different era and different ball game..

While such teams will have rase debate etc it's odd how someone could pick a team from 2000 to 2022 and only have players from three teams in it.

Johnny Buckley over daragh o se or even Moran? As a player, not in a month of Sundays, but if one is going on club success at county championship level, your comparing Crokes to an Gaeltacht or Strand Road.... then this is exactly where the criteria gets muddled

I presume there is a sprinkling of those. A baby born in a hospital outside of the home county is regarded as a home county baby if the parents are normally living in the home county. It is very important at Census form filling that parents are aware of this. A significant number of Kerry babies are born in Cork. Likewise, Meath babies born in Dublin. So, it is the parents home county that matters.

'It is very important at Census form filling that parents are aware of this'.
Why is that Brigid- is there a question specifically on this- I don't usually fill the Census form in our house so I am not familiar with it.
Many counties have no maternity hospitals now, Clare, Kildare, Carlow, Meath as far as I know, so parents there, unlike those in Kerry, have no choice but to go elsewhere.

Are they the first to do it I wonder? now there is good one, cannot think of any family off the top of my head in football. Derry Crowley has the senior hurling championship medal in 1969 as well to go with the football, he won football and hurling in the one year, in fact Luke won in both codes this year as well, hurling was junior though

The Sheehys from Mitchels would have. Think they came close to having 3 generations when Mitchels last made the final. I think Dinny and Tim Falvey from Annascsul did it. Dinny with Strand Road and Tim with West Kerry. Lot would have done it in hurling, with many doing it while playing together! The Boyles looking pretty likely to join the 3 generation club in the not too distance future.

I know P.J McIntyre a Garda from Offal based in Kenmare played both hurling and football for Kerry but did not win an all Ireland medal.

3 excellent guesses...the Top 3 are:
Mick O'Dwyer 19 years and 4 months
Pat Spillane 19 years 2 months
Mick O'Connell 19 years and 10 days.
Numbers 4 and 5 on the list are tricky...
