Dylan Casey gone off with a knee injury. Was down for treatment for a couple of minutes. Diarmuid just scored a penalty after Conor Geaney fielded a lovely ball. Still 2-13 2-6 to UCD casey was poor tonight, as was all the cork Full back line, I suppose Casey might have been drowning his sorrows after Sunday’s loss. Conor Geaney motoring well, DOC in spurts but might have celebrated the munster victory on sunday. Lots of variables this time of year. But tonight looked like 2 poor teams. Final score 4-15 UCD To 3-9 UCC

It is a long time since UCC played so poorly in the Sigerson cup. Too many players not up to the standard of their opponents.
From a Kerry standpoint only Conor Geaney played well. Diarmuid Phelan from Cork came on and did well. UCC made a heartening come back in the third quarter but had their backs broken when their goalie and a couple of other players were dispossessed and UCD scored their third and decisive goal. However, during that period of play I felt the ball was pulled out of Diarmaid’s hands for one of those “dispossessions”. Backs are increasingly allowed to get away with that tactic.
Diarmuid O’Connor converted a penalty beautifully and scored a peach of a point but really only played in patches.
I am not sure how serious Dylan Casey’s injury is An opponent came in hard from the side . Not sure of the nature of the injury. I suspect we will not be seeing him on Saturday. With Stacks and UCC decommissioned very likely we would if that injury had occurred. It is a shame.

Peader Coffey Byrne in midfield ran the game, scoring one goal, earning the penalty for another and dispossessing a UCC defender and setting up a 3rd goal. He is a monster of a man and UCC couldnt stop him on the run.
DC injury was most likely a dead leg and defo not serious. DoC was targeted by UCD who were wise to his give and go routine and used Dublun blocking tactics at will. He played in spurts.
Conor Geaney ploughed a very lone furrow up front and impressed.
Daniel O'Brien made a few decent runs in the first half but was meeting a brick wall.
UCC were lightweight and a poor crop there this year.

Despite the score line I thought most of the Kerry lads did well enough. Conor Geaney scored an excellent goal and did very well to win the penalty too. Daniel O’Brien got on a lot of ball and carried it well without giving it away. Dylan Casey was solid until he went off injured. Cian Gammell had a good enough game. Dylan Geaney had a few good plays once he came on. On the other side of it it definitely wasn’t one of Michael O’Gara’s better performances but that can be excused with the disappointment and exertion of the game on Sunday. Billy Morgan had UCC set up very poorly. They looked like they only met up on the day for the first time and I don’t think he had the best 15 players out either. As mentioned above Cofaigh Byrne impressive for UCD, we’ll probably be seeing him midfield for Dublin soon. The full forward line of Connellan, Cregg and McLoughlin was also excellent.

Where did Daniel O’Brien line out for UCC? Still have high hopes for Daniel if he gets a long run injury free

I think the kerry lads had the loss of the MFINAL , they were poor , far from solid, 4-15, but I agree with earlier poster, one of the worst UCC performances I have witnessed in awhile. Take all the above with the fact UCD are not a great side, based on the 2 games played todate. As I said earlier lots of issues played into UCC preparation or lack of it.

I still feel looking at their performances in isolation, the Kerry players didn’t actually perform that bad. O’Brien might have given away the ball once or twice but most of the time it was retained. It wasn’t Casey’s, Gammell’s or O’Brien’s men who were scoring. Those 3 had 6 out of 10 performances at least in my book, they weren’t the cause of UCC conceding so much. I thought some of the Cork players were very poor. It was a bad team performance but those 3 players still held their end up from what I could see anyway.

Anyone have any ideas on the numbers of kerry lads playing sigerson ? We must be the most represented county id say ? 20 plus with tralee 5 at least with UL, 4 or 5 with Mtu cork,4/5 with ucc. I'm sure there are a few scattered across the dublin colleges aswell ? 35 plus players ? A fair amount of lads involved which is great

Any idea who MTU Tralee will be playing next. Will they be in the run for Sigerson, would like to see Odds.
Like to ask the question, in order to make to Kerry team, tail end, are you better off to be available for McGrath cup and forgoe Club/College commitment.
I understand Club is everything to player, but has Dylan Casey/Greg Horan/Joseph o Connor missed there chance for Kerry caps.

UL, MTU Tralee, NUIG and DCU are all in the quarter-finals as they have all won two games.
All the following games will be played to see who joins them next Monday and Tuesday.
IT Carlow v Queens University Belfast
University College Dublin v Letterkenny Institute of Technology
Maynooth University v St Mary's University College
Ulster University v MTU Cork
All of the teams in this section have won one game and lost one.
The quarterfinals are seeded so the four teams already through can't meet each other but will be playing 1 of these 8 teams who are playing next Monday and Tuesday.
I'm not sure if there's a rule in relation to teams that have already played each other being kept apart at the quarter-final stage but wouldn't be surprised if there was. It would make sense for example if MTU Cork won and got into the quarter-finals that they would be kept apart from MTU Tralee as they already played each other.
On the question in relation to making the Kerry team, I don't think any of the lads mentioned have missed their chance for Kerry "caps" If anything playing club and college games just get lads more of a chance to impress the Kerry management. It's a bit of a moot question as from next year there will most likely be no more McGrath Cup and all club competitions will be finished before intercounty starts, so that should simplify matters a good bit, with only the Sigerson being a potential distraction.
This year the quarter-finals of the Sigerson are on the Monday/Tuesday (3 on the Monday) after the first round of the league, the semi-finals are the Monday after the second round of the league and the final is the Wednesday after the third round of the league. I'm struggling to understand the logic behind not having the quarter-finals and the semi-finals of the Sigerson on the Wednesdays after round 1 and round 2 of the league. Seems daft to have these games scheduled for Monday/Tuesday. This could potentially be an issue for Kerry depending on what teams progress.
I'm not sure if the time-table/structure for Sigerson is going to be changed next next year to avoid potential clashes with the league. With 15 teams and 3 teams who lost both games they played [especially when you look at the losing margins and the fact that half of these games were against teams who had also lost 1 game], you'd think there is a strong enough argument to be made for cutting the number of teams down to 12 which would help with the length it took to run off the competition.

That O’Cofaigh-Byrne looks like a throw back to Brian Mullins and seems ready for intercounty duty. Physically he has it over most opponents at college level. When he starts playing senior intercounty he will be meeting more hardened “criminals” who will match him size wise. Matters will become more difficult for him then. Only then will be able to assess him properly but certainly the raw material is there.

He has already played league and championship for Dublin - he made his debut under Gavin so he has been around the Dublin panel for quite a bit already - I think this would be his 4th year on the Dublin panel. To me he definitely looks a player more suited to a slower pace of a game like last nights one was as opposed to the fast pace of championship games on hard pitches. The UCC v UCD game is up on the Electric Ireland Youtube channel. The UL v LYIT games is up on the Higher Education channel.

The Stacks lads should be ok on that score - they've been playing competitive games that are in the public view so what harm if it's not for Kerry. McGrath Cup is only mickey mouse anyway. And of course they're available to Jack as of now so some silver lining to take from the defeat to Barrs. What, I think, hurt some of the Crokes lads' chances in other years was getting to AI club semis and final and missing out on the whole National League as a result. Always thought it was over the top to miss the whole thing just for two club games, surely both could have been accomodated to some extent at least.

UCC looked like they were severely hampered in their preparation and that was very evident in the game. It's likely they saw very little of DOC, Dylan Casey and Michael O'Gara.
Couple of big decisions in the game. It's hard to see where the UCD penalty came from and for the UCC one it looked a certain black or second yellow.
In saying that, they were way off it and appeared to be a weak UCC team compared to previous years. Didn't really have any stand out top class inter county players. They made UCD look like world beaters.

the stream was poor tonight on my side. 2 ulster teams cam thru tonight and prob 2 more tomo night. Yeah the quality of my stream was poor as well. It kept dropping so I didn't watch any of it in the end. From the tweet I saw it looked like a bit of a last minute thing. THe UCD loss last night makes UCC's performance against them look even worse. Also in terms of form, the fact that MTU Cork only beat UCC narrowly doesn't exactly bode well for their chances against UU later on. Maynooth won their game so 7 out of the 8 quarter-finalists are known UL, MTU Tralee, NUIG and DCU are on one side and LYIT, Queens, Maynooth and one of Ulster University or MTU Cork on the other.
