Contributors here may be right about Kilkenny being reluctant to pick outsiders but I wonder can they afford to be that choosy anymore. As far as I can recall, it must he the guts of ten years since they won the All-Ireland and they are no way near as dominant at underage level as they once were . I suspect that it would have been against Brian Cody’s religion to select a non Kilkenny man but that was during the time of plenty. The current man may be more pragmatic. Of course this all academic if Fionan wants to keep playing with Kerry. Time will tell all.

Yeah its hard to know.I remember well the time Vinny Murphy was being touted to play for Kerry around 97/98.At the time he was def the in form forward in Kerry and if my memory serves me correct he was top scorer in the county league two years running. I recall Bomber Liston was pushing for Vinny s inclusion on Kerry panel but Paidi blocked it.I was told at the time from someone in the know that Paidi was originally interestes until he got a few letters and heard majority of public opinion was against it. I remember reading a heading on one of the Kerry papers at the time (we had 3 then including "The Kingdom"Now and Then)"The Kerry full forward dilemma,One man has it and does nt want it-Brian Clarke and another man wants it and cant get it-Vinny Murphy. At the time Vinny was certainly worth his place on the panel.Only Maurice was more prolific at the time. Fionn would be a big loss to Kerry like Darragh O Connell was.I also recall a Casey (from Kerry)playing with Wexford hurlers in the 70s.

Very good ciarraimick . There was a story doin the rounds at the time that Paudi gave Vinny Murphy a trail and instructed Breen and Flaherty to give him some special attention while leaving his whistle in the car

Did John O’Grady , Ballyduff, play for Cork when he transferred to Blackrock in the seventies?
Did Garda PJ McIntyre from Offaly play hurling and football for Kerry?
To add a little spice to the discussion. What Kerryman has four senior All-Ireland hurling medals?

John O'Grady won a heap of medals for Blackrock in hurling, he had a trial or a challenge match with the Cork senior hurlers but didnt play league or championship. At the time the Cork senior hurlers were really strong, he was a top club hurler in cork at the time though PJ McIntyre played football and hurling for Offaly and Kerry at senior level Is the man with the 4 senior all ireland hurling medals a John Quirke born in Milltown but moved to Cork when a teenager?

You are correct about P.J McIntyre. In fact id say he has a record. He played dual for Offaly and Kerry.I doubt any other player played dual for two counties. I never saw him play but im told he was a class hurler and a big tough man.He was a Garda and so was his son Seamus who hurled with Kerry.Seamus died tragically at a young age on duty as a Garda.

Christy Walsh played in Kilkenny when he was playing with Kerry did he. I know he played there later in his career after he'd won the championships with Kilmoyley.

You are spot on about John Quirke. Extraordinary that a man from Milltown has four senior hurling medals. Probably never held a hurley in his hand while living there. Would be interesting to hear his life story. I presume he was a teammate of Christy Ring and Jack Lynch . Surely there is material for a book there.

Well if he left us when he was only ten months of age we can hardly claim him! Obviously he was a top class athlete judging by that article from the Evening Echo. Accordingly, it may be that if he had remained in Milltown he would have four football medals rather than four hurling medals! A twist of fate.

Mary Geaney Kerry won a few All Ireland camoige medals with Cork. She captained them to one title. She also won and captained Kerry ladies to All Ireland football success in 1976.A Mary also played hockey for Ireland and has numerous golf successes . There is no doubt she is one of Kerry’s greatest sports heroes. A sister of Dr. Dave who has a couple of senior medals. Another brother , Dr. Dick , died recently. As far as I can recall Dick captained the Kerry minors in 1965. The father , Con, is also a senior All-Ireland medal winner. That family have made their contribution.

Fionan Mackessy is Kerry's only representative on this year's Joe McDonagh all-star team. Well deserved acknowledgement of his contribution to Kerry.
I think that this is the 4th year in a row that Fionan has been named in the half back line for the McDonagh all-stars.

Fionan Mackessy put in a good display in the Kilkenny semi final today. Some achievement by him. Bryan Murphy from Causeway who has been playing with sarsfields in cork last couple years will be hoping for a second county championship medal in a row with them when they play in Cork county hurling final next Sunday... Sarsfields beat Midleton by a point last Sunday and Bryan Murphy was handed the task of keeping Midleton forward Conor Lehane in that game... Lehane had been scoring all round him in the lead up to last Sunday so for Sars management to put Murphy on him tells you of the esteem in which he is held...

If Fionan goes it will be near impossible to replace him huge loss. Its staggering and worrying the amount of quality hurlers Kerry lose.

Looking like a big rebuild for Tweek. Already down Fionan Mackassey, Dan Goggin and Gavin Dooley. More will follow. Not sure the younger players from the 20s team of the last 2 years are up to it yet. It will be a tough 2025.
Hopefully the trend of bringing in players from outside the county who can't make their club team is finished.
