Main lesson from this match for Kerry - stop messing with all the blooody handpassing - leave the ball quickly into space for the forwards to win their ball. We have the best ball winner and scoring forwards in the country if ball played into space in front of them. Should let selectors watch some old videos of Kerry 80's and even Meath in the late 80's. Kerry are playing an alien style of possession football. Wont win AI with this style of play. Let there be football.......not handball. Opposition must be delighted to be able to re-group their backs while we dickey around half backs and mid-field with all the hand-passing.
Overall, good to have found a few new players in the league. But where was Bohane today? Still think he is our best full back, and Marc is wasted there and at corner - should be out at centre/wing.
Crokes boys not back to their best yet - O leary disappointing today - needs to be more aggressive. Donoghue best potential of the new comers up front, followed closely by Curtin.

Now here's our big problem JACK O CONNER! Not looking for him to be sacked, but how many times does he need to see us build a lead, retreat back into our own half and proceed to throw a game away. 5 points up we should have continued as we were and we would have won that game by 8+ points. Couldnt agree more, this pissing about with the ball is costing us, we have the best forwards, give them the ball instaed of this stupid handpassing we go on with.

One leaves and another arrives, condolences to Egans and congrats to Declan & Co.
Now that the game is over congrats to Mayo, you were always good loosers and your determination and style of classy football paid off and good luck in the final and may the best team win. It looks like it will be a game to savour.
I have said it before, KD has had it rough recently off the field so ease off lads. Jazus you are not blind, we are not looking at the real KD. I am not going to put words in anyone's mouth but KD needs a wee break from us all. Where are the mentors? He hardly owes us anything, unlike others in society? Enough said.

The first note I'll make is that the pessimism is almost sickening from some posters. No one knows better than Donaghy that his error was a disaster but give the guy a break. He was playing an excellent game and was much more impressive than most.
The second point I'll make is the support, in the rather small crowd, for Mayo clearly roused on their team and if Mayo couldn't respond to that today then they never would. There was hardly a murmur when Kerry did raise a flag. As for Mayo they were roared on with every touch of the ball.
I left Croke Park today rather content I must say. I have been impressed with the young guns and they continued to do so today. Enright Crowley Curtin, McGuire and O Donoghue can all be proud of themselves. Well done lads. And a great experience for them.
I thought over all Kerry were the better team. Like I have said it must have been difficult for the players given the lack of support they had. Mayo to their credit never gave up. And most certainly had the backing of the crowd.
how Bryan Sheehan was ever going to kick that 45? There was at least 6 Mayo lads in front of him roaring and shouting at him, one only 5 yards away jumping up and down like a lunatic. One fickle poster claimed Bryan can't do it under pressure. Unbelievable comment to make. He has been epic the last two years. Had a quieter day today - as did some others. He was limping slightly in the build up to that 45 and still had the bottle to have a cut. Its easy to target the man given it was he who had the chance to level matters. But it should have never have gone to that stage.
All in all a good work out for APRIL folks. So lets not get carried away. Did we really want to face Cork a few short weeks before championship? Thanks but no thanks in my opinion. Mayo lacked all sorts of attacking ability in the second half. A sharper Kerry team would have accounted for them very easily. A handling error here a pass too many there etc was evident throughout the game. Fine tune them and away we go.
What's all the panic about?
One final note I'll make is yet again the standard of referreeing was appalling. I have no idea how many frees were given but it seemed outrageous. He made what was looking like a fast open game into a stop start scrappy affair. Some of his decisions were baffling. Not helped either by some of our tackling mind you. And I use tackling in a very light sense. Its an area that needs addressing. tackle proper boys please and thanks.

The performance and the result were disappointing yesterday. indeed it was a strange day out all in all. There was a minutes silence before the game and it seemed to continue right into the match itself such was the empty atmosphere. In terms of positives Maher was excellent. Great fielding and work rate especially in our own half. Galvin looked sharp enough which bodes well. Most of the young lads including those that came on acquitted themselves admirably. I though James O'Donoghue did very well when he came on. The negatives.....well there seemed to be a lethargy or a lack of motivation out there. Mayo seemed to be trying twice as hard. Are the rumours of a virus just that? I can understand that it may have been hard to be fully motivated given they were playing the same team two weeks in a row but nonetheless it was disappointing for those of us that made the trip. Donaghy and the rest of them should be made watch his suicidal kick that resulted in the penalty on a loop with the door locked behind them for a full evening. Like many I'm sick to death of the messing that goes on in our own half. Donaghy took it to a new extreme with perhaps (if I may be facetious) the assist of the season. It reminded me of Fitzgerald's ball into Mike Frank against Cavan in 97. Having said that it was a game where the lateral handpassing in the backs was not as prominent as in other recent matches with much more forward movement of the ball out of defence. Such a pity then that Donaghy spoiled matters. Overall Donaghy had a poor game and the easy chance he missed at the very end typified his day as much as the "assist".
Despite the negatives I certainly will not be losing any sleep over the result. The league by and large was productive and probably more valuable than some of the leagues we have won down the years in terms of finding and blooding new players. We played badly yet only lost by a late point in extra time to a team that were trying a good bit more. We'll save the alarm bells for another day.
Congratulations to Declan and his wife. I did not know yesterday why he was missing and feared an injury but this is much better news!

Careless from Kerry yesterday, never really got going in this game. There is always the danger of losing momentum when you starting changing selections in games with nothing to play for. Pretty poor div 1 this spring - games in April from 2012 will have little relevance come August and will probally belong in the Aprils fool category this year.
The more analytical minds amongst us can ponder if referring decisions that go against Kerry are an anti Kerry bias that trickles down from the top and seep into the perceptions of referee's minds. Mayo's penalty can be considered to be very soft while Mayo second goal should have been a free out for diving into the square looking for a second.
So we are spared another rumble in the bear pit with Cork, that might not be a bad thing at this time of the year and will probably rumble Tom's spring hibernation by two weeks earlier!
Kerry's missing bridging generation of blue chip players - Tommy and David is starting to come into focus now and will become more pronounced over the next few seasons.

Surreal atmosphere in Croke Park yesterday. Yes Kerry like playing there and its good for the likes of Enright, McGuire, Crowley and Curtain to get more game time in Croke Park but for the supporters (and county board finance committee) it was a frustrating experience.
Not a game that needs a whole lot of analysis but the major thing I would take from this game is that Jack O Connor needs to swallow his pride today and ring Tom Sullivan. Tom, for me, remains a better corner back than Enright and Young. While we MAY have Tomas and Bohane available later in the year, it was alarming to see us end up with two forwards playing wing back.
The lack of back-up at midfield remains a worry but if Sheehan and Maher stay injury free they are as good as what any other county have in the middle.
Darran it appears was sick going into yesterdays game and you could see it in him. However so far this year he looks more like the 2008 Darran than the 2011 Darran. We will need the 2011 Darran again this year.
Donaghy will be fine but he needs to get back to basics and realise his limitations and do what he is good at - creating scores inside the 45.

Lads, some comments regarding the team IMO are over the top. Let’s remember there was a flu or bug doing the rounds in the team and still we only lost by one point and it is only April. Yes I agree that losing a decent lead is becoming a nasty habit but on the flip side credit to Mayo for never giving up or throwing in the towel like their teams of the past have done. Congrats to Mayo, fair play to them they stuck at it even when it looked like we might cruise home 5 points up and 15mins to go. Great credit to them for not giving up and pushing on for the last point.
I would have to mention the ref. Some decisions, again IMO, were baffling and he gave some unbelievably soft frees to both side, although I thought Mayo got the rub of the green from him.
In fairness the team looked jaded today so the flu or bug excuse seems to stand up. A few things though with the team and tactics. We need to have a Plan B for the kick outs. When we are under pressure why can’t we devise a Plan B for a short kick out to retain possession and not give teams a 50 50 chance of getting the ball back and like yesterday getting the winning score? The silly infuriating passing around our back line was suicidal and again yesterday we were punished. Brosnan lost a ball at one stage after receiving from Marc deep in our back line and was trying to break out of defence, low and behold he lost the ball and Mayo scored. This was just an example of what reoccurred time and time again yesterday where we overplayed the ball, didn’t move it quick enough to the forwards or farted around in defence before losing the ball for a Mayo score. This has been a trait of this team for 3 or 4 years now and needs addressing for summer.
Maher and Sheehan are looking good again this year in MF. Paul had a great game but again teetered on the edge and I thought he was gone for the penalty but the ref didn’t book him, lucky for us. Enright was solid alright but got caught for some silly frees which he’ll have to improve on for the summer. Marc was solid as always but unfortunately for us can’t be everywhere!!
Previous comments on Donaghy should be restrained. Lads he’s had a tough time lately personally and no it doesn’t excuse that disaster of a pass to Dillion for the penalty but he had being playing well in the FF line until then. I think Jack needs to ‘put the arm around’ KD for a chat, he’s still a great player let’s not forget. I do think he probably has been overplayed and should have got a few weeks off, perhaps a break from the game would refresh the mind although it’s too late now. Also if he plays the wing I think he should be asked to stay between MF and the FF line where he is best. His skewed pass typified the farting about in defence referred to earlier indulged by all yesterday and punished severely yet again. Bryan again played well and kicked some great scores, it is a pity he missed the last kick but look how many has he scored and retrieved something for Kerry?
The team as a whole suffered from sloppy passing throughout and many unforced errors. Plenty of positives overall from the league 3 or 4 new players getting extended runs in the team and gaining valuable experience. We need also to stay positive when we are ahead in games and not retreat like we did yesterday, continue to drive on and kill the game off. Look at Cork yesterday, Down got peno to bring it back to 2 points but Cork drove on to bury them, we used to do that 5 or 6 years ago.
Overall the league was positive for Kerry and we should look forward to the summer.
Congratulations to Declan and his wife also on the birth of their child.

Frustrating end to a lack lustre game. Failing to finish off beaten opposition in Croker again is a worry. The ref didn't help either team, and the difference in the refereeing of both games yesterday was very obvious. 2nd game was let flow more and that suited Cork. But did we really need to play Cork before June? I don't think so, not saying we lost on purpose by any means. Overall a good league campaign, except for the Armagh game. Jack had a look at a few new players and I think the strength of the panel is better than last year.

Donaghy will be fine but he needs to get back to basics and realise his limitations and do what he is good at - creating scores inside the 45. Couldnt agree more buck02, someone needs to tell him that he's not a Dara nor a Jacko & that he is limited in what he can do - some of the stuff he tries are way beyond his abilities & yesterday was a crowning point to that - if the Kerry management have learned anything in relation to KD during this league its that he's most effective at full forward.Dont get me wrong he's a good footballer but at inter county level he's a good full forward for 70 minutes & I wouldnt let him outside the 45 even for the throwins which I think is a complete waste of time. The question that I would ask of yesterday is what was our full forward, who was playing very well by the way when kerry decided to revert to the long ball tactic in the second half, doing back in the back line anyway????Now if JOC told him to go 100 yards away from where he was supposed to be then thats a tactical mistake by JOC but if he's off doing his own thing then Kerry have a problem as whos to say that he wont go walk about again in the future if he's not told to stay upfront?? I know its only April but if the management team made that switch yesterday in light of what happened last September then maybe its the management team that havent learnt from their mistakes

Will Jack ever learn. The answer is no. Kieran o Leary instead of B.J Keane (Madness) Donnaca Walsh back again (Madness). There are young lads playing mighty stuff in the league and come the big games they are left on the bench. People are dilludded on this site saying they were content after the match yesterday. How could you be happy with that rubbish. People are saying Mayo never gave up, we gave them the game in normal time. The problems are there and people think everything will magically fix itself by June. We have being found wanting over the last few years when it comes to closing out games. We have a weak streak and yesterday proved it again. Donnahy and darren back around the backs in the latter stages (Madness) I agree with bringing back an extra man to to help out but not a free for all. We lost another game on hand passing the ball out of the defence when it should have bing driven 60 yards down the field in injury time. Same habbits as the last few years. The players cant be blamed as these are the tactics practised in training. When I hear people saying its only april I think we are in the wrong frame of mind. We along with Jack and his selectors need to admit we have major problems that have being exposed over the last few years. If we can do this and address our problems then we can reach our main goal and win Sam, otherwise we will all be back here talking about where it went wrong AGAIN. Lets hope we wont be using the phrase "theres always next year" come september

What worries me is that most of the losing patterns and tactics of 2011 were repeated yesterday. Other posters have summarised these better than I can. Very little, it seems, has been learned from the losses of the recent past. And that's not good whether its January, April or July.

Wouldn't disagree with much of that Kerry4life....we lack leadership on the field when it counts. We had a fairly good league and appeared to be developing real solutions to the problems that were evident last Sept. but again, reverted to old ways yesterday. A depressing day...not because we were beaten but how we handed it away again.
Cillian Young is clearly not up to being a corner back...on the wing yes but not in the corner. Shane Enright started slowly but improved rapidly and was back to his best form in the second half. Marc was as always, Mr. Reliable. Peter Crowley has been the find of the league and will have to be accomodated in the half-back line....centre back me thinks, flanked by Tomas and Cillian. Midfield is ok...don't mess with it. We have sufficient good forwards to win an All-Ireland with this year but , as others have pointed out, can we please change the mindset regarding defending a lead...it doesn't work in Gaelic Football. You have to keep doing what is working well. And also, can we get back to passing the ball with assurance and taking a scoring opportunity when it presents itself. Passing for the sake of doing so, particularly in the forward line yesterday, was ridiculous. and the passes themselves were often aimless and certainly not to hand. Put the ball over the bar or in the net and lets talk about the options later. James O'Donoghue was a breath of fresh air when he came on. Final point, lets stop delayiong the ball in the midfield area...Paul Galvin (who otherwise had a very good game) and KD are the biggest offenders here.
A lot for Jack to get right but just when you think we're putting the bad habits behind us, we're back to square one.

Absolutely. On the basis of losing the division one semi-final in a tough game in Croke Park, I would have to say that Kerry are obviously falling apart. Anybody who thinks that Kerry have unearthed a big amount of serious young talent, experimented well while winning games, and got the huge bonus of a game in Croke Park is obviously dilluded. We must clearly do a lot of work on 'our house' (Madness) or an All Ireland will be 'one step beyond' (Madness).

I think the management had a big hand in Kerry losing this game. Firstly, the most worrying thing for me was that our half back line in the end was - Galvin, Brosnan and Walsh. 3 forwards. I know Crowley and Young came off with knocks but to finish a game with those men in your defence is crazy. Why didn't they bring on Bohane or Fionn Fitz the other 2 defenders on the bench? Or bring back on O'Mahoney or Maguire?
Kerry's tactics were poor as many have said before. The speed of ball to our forwards is killing us. Quicker ball yields more for this Kerry team. It is being held up too much. And the dropping back to close out a game isn't natural to us and we struggle to do it effectively so it should be abandoned.
Donaghy is the next problem. I don't think people can use his personal problems as an excuse for playing poorly. If they are affecting his game the Jack should give him a break. His positioning is the next thing. The experiment hasn't worked and lets hope its over. As for that pass at the end of normal time, it was the worst thing I have ever seen on a football field.
I face a backlash for this but I agree with a previous poster that Sheehan has missed a few big frees for Kerry. I am one of Sheehan's biggest fans and have been asking for him to be midfield for a number of years and without a doubt he is one of the best kickers of a ball in the history of the game but he has missed kicks when Kerry need them most. He has kicked some big ones for South Kerry and a few for Kerry too but he has missed some big ones too. I am in no way blaming Sheehan and he will learn from it.
There has been some positives from the league mainly Curtin and Crowley who I feel are really pushing for starting places in the summer.

Ah come on guys I think yer being very unfair to Bryan Sheehan. I was one of his biggest critics in the past few years & was happy to swallow my pride last year when he deservedly won his all star.He has matured as a top class player & the best ground free taker we've had or possibly the country has had since Maurice Fitz. In fairness to the man how many midfielders do you see as the teams free taker at inter county level - most are forwards who would only do a fraction of the running of a midfielder? He was running up & down croker for 90 minutes yesterday & guys are having a pop off him for not scoring a 45 after all of that plus he had 3 Mayo players practically in his face - give the man a break. The man is a victim of his own high standards - whatever happened yesterday was no fault of Bryan Sheehans anyway

I think kerry are in trouble . They don't have the same players coming through to replace the older players . In the 90s we were very good underage and a lot of good players came through but they are all starting to retire and when they are all gone i think we are in big trouble .

Scraping the proverbial barrel here aren't you? So what are you saying? Sheehan doesn't have the bottle? We should let one of the many other excellent free-takers take over from him? What Down game? QF 2 years ago? If so we lost that game because aside from Cooper, everyone else got beat out the gate. Last years AI? I seem to remember us being up 5/6 points with 5 minutes to go, can't blame Sheehan for that collapse. Have you forgotten last week and the draw he got for us? Ask the people of South Kerry how many county titles they would have won this past decade without Brian Sheehan and his free taking ability. ::)There is no problem with Brian Sheehan. Jack needs to stop ushering our players back into their shells once we have alead built up. We need to ensure we have cover at midfield in case of injury/suspension. Aside from that we're in a good position with the best dead ball artist in the competition! Are you serious? Down quarter final Gooch earned himself a bloody all star, he took them on his own. And yes, in the first half when we were coming back into he missed 3 very scoreable kicks. His last act against Tyrone in '08 was to kick wide from 35 yards just to the right of the goal. Do NOT get me wrong, Sheehan is a fine player and one of the best strikers of the ball around. I am saying that if we were 5 points up that would have went sailing over the bar, and it not the first time when we have needed a score from a dead ball over the last few years that he had failed to deliver it. He was far from the most culpable today and in fairness it shouldn't have come to that both in terms of the game and the lead up, the ball should have been fisted over the bar by Johnny Buckley from 14 yards rather than handpassing to another man 3 yards away. And what was going through Donaghy's head with that ball I do not know. No, you read it wrong....I said: ASIDE FROM COOPER, EVERYONE ELSE GOT BEAT OUT THE GATE.....referring of course to the Down game you brought up. So we played 20 players that day, 19 of which were awful. Therefore to single out 1 Brian Sheehan free kick is very unfair on him.

Would not be too despondent about todays loss if we learn lessons from it; we need to establish Stars true role( and I am not talking about his give away in the final minutes) - my belief is that he should be played at the edge of the square and nowhere else- this was his most productive period today and with the likes of the Gooch, Declan etc feeding off him believe we can do real damage- Paddy Curtin is probably the best foil for him at 15. JOC & Co will also have to look hard at our defence; Killian is not a corner back but on his present form is he deserving of a starting berth? Has not progressed the way I thought he would and with Tomas to be restored come championship maybe Peter Crowley is the man to wear the No 7 shirt?? Brosnan should be at 6 but I think Crowley has the pace and physique to wear 6 also; we still have not found a replacement midfielder- Maher was massive today but we would be in real trouble if he was absent- Sheehan was not as influential as normal today but an injury/suspension to either would leave us in trouble. Overall, a very satisfactory league campaign, one loss and plenty of positives. Lets learn from todays defeat. I agree with you. A few games on the bench might light a fire under Killian. I said it earlier in the league that the man had all the signs of the comfort zone. If Jack has not done so already I think he should get on the phone to Tom O’Sullivan and do a bit of persuading to give it one more year because we still need him. As it stands, apart from Marc O’Se, Tom would get a place ahead of any other player in the Kerry fullback line.

Can someone please tell me how donaghy's place on the team is justified , im not saying this because of his wayward pass i just think he has only played a couple of good games for kerry in two years

What I was p*ssed off about was that neither the ref, the other officials nor the other Kerry players protected Sheehan from the harrassment and encroaching. Also, 45s should be brought forward 13m for encroaching as well as frees. The ref showed the Mayo players the spot where they were allowed stand and all 5 went within that distance.

Your paragraph on Darren is true, but to be fair to him I think we can pinpoint the problem clearly. He had a great game against Dublin in the 1st game, then picked up a hamstring injury and hasn't been the same since. I'd give him time to rest that and expect him to be flying again come summer when he'll thrieve on the hard ground. To a player like Darren with his speed, a doudgy hamstring is all the more harmful.

The man is a victim of his own high standards - whatever happened yesterday was no fault of Bryan Sheehans anyway Could not agree more, a 45 is not a sure thing. He is the best place kicker in the country.
