(Just to note, a full strength Tyrone would definitely match us though. We were handpassing away to beat the band around the middle 3rd. If we did that against Tyrone we WOULD lose. Have to agree with you Kerryman watched the match last night-we would have played into Tyrones hands with the handpassing. Everytime we kicked direct ball we were a dream to watch [/quote] Yes but we would have adopted a different approach had it been Tyrone. Thus the role of mgt and tactics etc.

FatTom, you need to show some dignity in victory, read Dermot's post I agree totally with him, and he's a Tyrone man, that doesn't happen often

I'm enjoying my victory. I have no problem with opinion but saying things like Darragh O Se had been lethargic is ridiculous given he was the outstanding player in league and championship this year. Canavan got an All Star in 2002 for league performances alone and yet he calls O Se lethargic for one iffy performance against Nic Murphy even though he had been playing the football of his life to this point. No problem with opinions but getting quite obvious things like this wrong annoys me. As for the thing with BigMac I think he picked me up a little wrong. I think Armagh are a great side, but calling two teams trend setters, grouping them with a province (which does them an injustice) and then ignoring Kerry as trend setters even though they have been more consistent of late annoys me. Again no problem with opinion but simply ignoring the facts annoys me.

Years of capitulating to Northern teams - coming from a man with 2 All Irelands is a bit much to take. We lost 3 matches. 1 by a point. 1 by the kick of a ball. We won An All Ireland in between and yet we suffered years at the Norths hand.

I merely stated a point which I was annoyed at.
Also people mention stuff Jarlath Burns said, Derek Kavanagh said, Ray Silkes said and nothing.
I mention Peter the Great and the board goes into ruptions.

FatTom, i don't want to get involved in a "discussion" with you for 2 reasons, 1, you always get the last word. 2. today is not the day.... but... yes Kerry have been the most consistent team, there is no doubt, but the fact is they have changed their approach in recent years in relation to diet, training, physicality and playing tactics, the main reason being that Tyrone and Armagh have raised the bar (set the trend) when it comes to preparation and Kerry as a good team have learned from what those two teams are good at and combined this with ability of natural footballers and produced an outstanding team and hence the performance on Sunday

Agreed. I don't doubt it for a second. On that point I think we would have had to do this anyway but they showed us the light. However if we are to believe the press the Dubs were more physically prepared than anyone. You still need the raw talent and all 3 have this.

I don't like banding Armagh and Tyrone together never mind the whole of Ulster as these 2 counties are very different in styles and have very different players, however in terms of preparation they are very similiar and set a new trend along with the Cork hurlers in terms of professionalism. Kerry became just as well prepared but had to do it Kerry style: Cork had tattoos, Tyrone had wristbands and Armagh had weird symbols as a sign of unity. The Kerry players also wore something as a sign of unity and the bond between them - it's called a Kerry jersey. For the All-Stars and the All-Star trip, Armagh and Tyrone went to the gym and stayed off the beer while Cork didn't go at all. The Kerry team went out and enjoyed themselves and were dead right - intercounty football is supposed to be fun and occasions like those are meant to be enjoyed. Armagh and Tyrone had dieticians who got them to eat virtually nothing but fruit and veg, the Kerry team stopped having butter and gravey on their spuds after training. Tyrone decided against having any challenge games. The only challenge games Kerry have are A's v B's referreed by intercounty referees who get blisters on their hands from all the yellow cards they have to dish out.

True about the professionalism element. Duly noted. Maybe I picked it up wrong.
Aside: Apparentely the Dubs brought training methods to a new level this year in terms of physical condition. Like we followed Tyrone and Armagh do we need to follow suit here too. It didn't work for them due to their lack of talent but is it something we need to do.

One last thing bugging me from the match on sunday. I was up on the hill during the match and had a very good view of the Tom o' Sullivan / Mortimer exchanges. And i was fully convinced that in fact it was Mortimer who was doing the pulling and dragging. when the umpire called the ref's attention I thought my suspicions were gonna be confirmed but no O' Sullivan got booked.
Any else have opinions of this, or is it just me looking through green and gold tinted glasses.

One caveat about Mayo........ Has their run to the final been too easy......... who knows? Galway lost to Westmeath, Dublin hammered Laois. Mayo struggled past Laois. Dublin committed hari kari on the sideline. Have Mayo peaked? I think that at this stage we will all agree that the championship was lopsided this year. Kerry, Tyrone, Armagh and Cork on one side of the draw. It was always going to be either Mayo, Galway or Dublin to make it to the fin al but in hindsight, Mayo were simply the best of the rest. Tyrones injury jinx is unreal and no team would have overcome it. That left Armagh and Kerry and with 5 minutes to go in the quarter final there was only 2 points in it. One intercepted pass and Darren o Sullivan killed off Armagh. That was the day that the 2006 Sam was won. Jack has serious guts to make the calls he did and fair play to him. Declan is class on and off the field. Delighted for Mike Frank. Talk about perseverance. At the end of the day, the placing of Donaghy at 14 won the all ireland. Ever Gaelic football team should have a target man at 14. We should "walk aisy when our glass is full". In 1986 I stood on the old Canal End and watched Kerry beat a gallant but naive Tyrone team to win 3 in a row. It was 11 years before they won it again. Who can blame Moynihan, McCarthy, Fitzmaurice and Dara if they call it a day. They will not be easily replaced. Finally......... thank you Jack and everyone who is connected with this team. You have brought us so much joy.

Jack was right. A year was a very long time to wait. But he didn't have to wait it out in a triumphant Ulster.
Last year I had a standard email prepared for the expected hoards of commiserators and gloaters: "No excuses - the better team won on the day. But I hope Sam enjoys his short holday up north because he's going back to Kerry next year." The universal response was to catch myself on because Ulster teams were now the dominant force and would continue to be so for at least the next ten years.
The early months of the year gave me a chance to stand out from the crowd at the nothern away games. There were good days (Scotstown) and almost good days (Omagh). And the League win seemed like a taste of things to come. Radio Kerry on the Internet was great for the games that it was not possible to travel to.
Down to Fitzgerald for the Munster final and the dark night of the soul began. I almost lost the faith, but the Longford match was a revelation. Then in the Upper Cusack for the QF - "Bliss it was that day to be alive - but to be a Kerryman was very heaven". Missed the semifinal but spent the first half in Belfast Airport glued to the radio until my flight was called.
After all that just one ticket for Sunday which went to offspring but I would'nt have missed being there for anything.
Now there is a quiet satisfaction looking forward to next year and remembering last year's email, my Ulster colleagues who are now congratulating me on "another soft win"ask about my prediction for next year. It is on record:
"Back to back in 2007"
I tell them that some people in Kerry are already talking about five in a row, but at this stage, that's about as silly as last year's prediction of a decade of Ulster dominance.
Thank you Jack, Star, Gooch and all the team for another great year.
Ar ais aris in 2007

As that Pop4 presenter would say "fair play" and "deadly" Keryr were class and seem as well-equipped as any team i remember in the last 15 years to get the elusive two in a row

Starting to come back down to earth now...what a performance. That first 10 mins in particular will live long in the memory. Tremendous performance and massive credit to all involved. The best comment I've read I think is "Kerry simply played a game from another galaxy. Fluid, cunning, sassy and garnished, sporadically, by breathtaking arrogance... ". This was the most complete performance this team has turned in....and on the most important day.
Not much talk this week about Morrisons 'skills' at beating Kerry!. I have to say when I heard about the valentine cards thing he had organised earlier in the year, I couldn't stop laughing. That kind of sh1t should really be kept quiet or preferably, not done at all.
I hope theres no retirements now...we're definitely 'on the up' (as if we've been down for the past 10 years!).
Come on the Kingdom!

What 'Valentines card' thing is this? Morrison sent all the Mayo players a Valentines card with "With Love, From Sam" written on it. (or words to that effect). I read he also sent the Antrim Hurlers Brazil nuts to remind them to play with class and panache etc. etc. They are grand stunts to pull if they work out but they just seem a little odd now. Plenty of work for psychologists in Mayo this winter methinks ;D ;D ;D
