At the outset let me congratulate Mayo. They were deserving winners, at stages playing football of a relentless intensity which at times threatened to blow Kerry out of Croke Park. One would need a heart of stone not be happy for them. Per head of population, they are probably the best GAA supporters in the land. This trophy is the least they deserve and who knows they may garner more before year’s end.
As I said, there were times when it looked as if they might submerge Kerry entirely, having the lion’s share of possession. But they didn’t. Kerry supporters, understandably feeling glum today, would do well to remember that. In essence this was a victory for grizzly experience allied to reserves of physical development and street wisdom accumulated over a couple of years by playing one of the best ever teams, not only playing them but putting them to the pin of their collar. Against that arsenal of weaponry you had a lot of lads , full of naïveté and as yet green as cabbage at this level of combat. Yet, in spite of the apparent lopsided nature of the balance sheet we were a mere one point adrift two minutes into extra time. Ruminate on that fact in your moments of despair.
The glass is more than half full on the evidence of what has transpired over the duration of the NFL. A lot of new lads have been successfully exposed to this level of competition. Perhaps there are more that can be drafted in and of cours we will have an input from Dr. Crokes. Conversely , we need to jettison three or four who have been endlessly recycled. All in all, it is not unreasonable to assume that we will have a formidable panel by the summer. Donie Buckley can now get down to seriously harness and reconfigure and fine tune a less porous defensive unit.
Midfield is maybe our biggest problem but it is not unremediable. I met a lot of people after the match who were critical of Jack Barry. Yes , Aiden O’Shea had a fine game but Jack was far from anonymous. He tirelessly ranged all over the park, gaining a lot of possession, a lot of it primary. He is very good at ghosting in and gaining possession close to goals but seems to get white wash fever in those positions when it comes to scoring. Confidence would seem to be the issue and surely that can be improved. John Divllly, former Galway CHB and now UCD coach often references Jack as he did again in the Examiner on Saturday. Clearly, he rates Jack very highly but seems to suggest that he is under achieving. Most of us would agree with that assessment. I have a lot of confidence in Jack and I will be surprised if he doesn’t start to realise that potential in the summer.
Diarmuid O’Connor is our other midfield aspirant. He found out a lot about the harsh realities of life at this level yesterday. As I have said before , 2020 is most likely before we will see a dividend here but on what we have seen he has all the ingredients to be a great player. Experience and tough love will make a man out of him.
David Moran is of course another midfield option and I wouldn’t be averse to giving Sean O’Shea some outings there, especially considering that we have a lot of options up front. A fitter Tommy Walsh could also make a contribution there. Not all despair then at midfield,
Gavin Crowley was a man who epiomised the differential in fitness reserves between the teams. In the first half he was full of gumption and attitude , keeping Diarmuid O’Connor seriously restricted, while scoring 1-1. As the second half progressed, Diarmuid strarted to assert himself as Gavin ran out of gas. With more fitness and more concentration, this wanders at times, Gavin could be an important player for us. Incidentally, his goal, struck in front of me was vicious daisy cutter.
Shane Ryan must accept responsibility for the second goal but this was easily his most commanding performance to date. Will need to improve communications with his backs when those high ones come in. I think it was Sean OShea, who competed, half competed , for that fatal high one. Talking about Sean,he learned a lot about the darker side of the game yesterday. I hope he learned that if you are not getting fair play from the referee then you must adopt some methods to gain fair play yourself. Again, that comes with experience.
David Clifford was playing in front of me , in my perch at the Canal End , in the first half. Watching him brought back memories of the 2008 final against Tyrone. You may remember we were fruitlessly bombing in high ones to the twin towers while practically ignoring Colm Cooper in the other corner who was eviscerating Conor Gormley with whatever play came his way. Similarly with David yesterday. On crumbs, he was tormenting his opponent , scoring one and having another mysteriously disallowed. His rations were more meagre in the second half and yet he almost saved the day, again. Good ball or bad ball get it into that man.
Were Dara and Kevin McCarthy substituted because of injuries or tactical moves.? Dara was finding the going tough but I thought Kevin was being a handful for Keith Higgins.
I look forward with optimism. Of course avoiding injuries is paramount.
It is painful enough having your team beaten but watching them play in those putrid jerseys compound the misery. This must be the most nauseating ensemble I have seen any team bedecked in. It is not remotely Kerry. Some may say, that you have a lot more serious issues to complain about than the colour of a Jersey. I would retort by saying that you have no insight into the soul of Kerry football if you are indifferent to the colour of the Kerry Jersey. No appreciation of the heritage of Kerry football if you do not understand what those green and gold colours mean to generations of Kerry football supporters. Just get rid this latest unfashionable statement. It sullies our football tradition.

Your point above about the basic skills I find hard to fathom with all our training and years of development squads any player putting on the jersey has to be comfortable off both feet and both hands That does explain a lot now in hindsight why some players would not pull the trigger when the shot was definitely on . Wanted skills coach in Kerry !! Skills are there in my opinion its getting to the pitch of senior ic and the lack of time and space in comparision to underage/club. Also nerves played a part tough on sos and clifford expected to lead the team at 20 years of age!! I like the two players in question a lot but they are a little one-footed.

A very successful NFL for Kerry, 12 points in regulation and just coming up short v Mayo twice in three weeks. No complaints yesterday, the better and more battle hardened team with a decade of intercounty conditioning beat a younger up and coming Kerry. Mayo played more football yesterday but on the scoreboard it was a game of inches, DC's disallowed goal, having his attempt saved in injury time and Mayo's second goal. All big swings at crucial stages of this game. Mayo remain a serious outfit. Yesterdays win might tip momentum in their direction going into the summer. They are still pound for pound with Dublin 1-9 and maybe 1-12 now and may have found a few inside forwards this year. A potential semi final with Dublin should be another epic cliffhanger. Have the Dubs marginally regressed 1-6, where are Mayo's older players now? All to play for in that one.
Plenty of positives for Kerry going into the summer, they are in a good place and will have a say on their side of draw and are well capable of reaching the final. A good two weeks for Graham O'Sullivan who now becomes an option, Diarmuid O'Connor played a lot of good football yesterday. Shane Ryan will become a great Kerry keeper, possibly number 1 in the country post the Cluxton era. He needs to be left there now and allowed develop his game. Jason Foley needs to be given game-time to define his role going forward as Kerry defender.
Kerry have plenty to work on and with between now and July, I fully expect them to come knocking hard on the summer door. Losing yesterday might be no harm in the long run as it will keep young minds focused and driven. I presume Diarmuid O'Connor will now go with the U20s? Pity this daft rule is still in place. The club window now, a dampened Munster championship on the horizon and little to do now until the Super 8s after a great feast of spring football as the evenings lengthen. It is a long window for the fans, PK and his team will embrace it. Kerry are making real progress.

I think the Mayo fans are the best supported team full stop.
I am not a fan of their woe-is-me nature but it isn't unusual to see more Mayo fans in Kerry than say Dublin.

Another small comment re: the fitness or otherwise of Gavin Crowley.
My understanding is that Diarmuid O'Connor Mayo is perhaps THE fittest footballer in the country, in terms of miles ran.
In other words no one player should be marking him for the duration of the match.

Very balanced assessment of things Kerrygold and i also thought Veterans piece was excellent as it normally is. I think we can look forward to a very competitive championship, Dublin have regressed a bit in my opinion and Mayo,Tyrone and ourselves have closed that gap. The atmosphere after the game was like an all Ireland win unreal. Living up here i know the Dubs really dislike Lee Keegan and seeing him first hand i can appreciate why.

I am in two minds over Shane Ryan to be honest. He was good yesterday apart from the mistake. Is it one mistake too many? Do we give him the championship and hope he eradicates it from his game? What happens it we stick with him and he literally drops a clanger in our first super 8 game in croke park? Do we drop him for Murphy?
We need to decide on a settled goal keeper and stick to it. Its been like the hokey pokey between the sticks for Kerry. We were blessed to have Declan O'Keffee from 1996 - 2003 and Murphy then until 2009.
We have had Kealy for a while but he too has had problems under the high ball. I remember distinctly a mix up with him against Donegal in 2010 that gifted them a goal from a sideline we never recovered from. He was blamed for our poor kickouts as well when it went badly.
He was in goals until 2014 when Kelly came in and remained in goal for the championship. He made a howler in the replay against mayo in 14 and we goat way with it. He too was blamed for poor kickouts.
Kealy then came in for the 15 campaign and played well. Making good saves against Tyrone and Dublin in the final. Got an all star for his troubles.
Kelly then got the nod for the championship in 16.
And in 2017 Kealy called a halt to his inter county career. Shane Murphy was then called in to the squad with Kelly in goal.
In 2018 Murphy started the championship and was very harshly dropped after a complete team malfunction in the first super 8s game in croke park. Kelly stepped back in and played the remainder of the championship. All throughout Eamonn's reign from 2013 to 2018 was rotate the keepers during the league.
If Peter Keane has decided that Shane Ryan is the number 1 then stick with him. The only thing to change his mind could be the availability of Shane Murphy. Do we need a goalkeeping coach to come in the odd time to work with keepers on the high ball?
Is it all stemming from not having a go to full back. Declan O'Keeffe played behind Barry O'Shea and Seamus Moynihan as his number 3. Murphy had Mike Mac in front of him and then Tommy G. I recall Muphy making a bad mistake against Galway in 08 coming for a high ball and getting no where near it. It was no coincidence we didn't have a full back there to mind the house either that day.

Mayo used to fear Kerry, not anymore. We used to be able to beat them when we were on an off day, not anymore. We used to physically dictate the game and let our finishers do the damage on the score board, not anymore.
We have lovely footballers and they will learn and develop that steely edge with more exposure to that level of football. It was great that this has been exposed to the panel in March, not mid-July. I felt the wind was quite significant yesterday. It blew down from hill 16 and played havoc with several long kicks into Clifford and Tommy Walsh. Many were over hit and it the 2nd half it was even more difficult into the breeze. I felt that we set up well defensively in the first half but we seemed to run out of ideas and legs in the second half as Mayo upped the stakes and ran us ragged for most of that half.
And yet, we could have stolen it, if Clifford's goal bound flick has nestled where expected, we could have had the league title bagged. We were still in it to the very last minutes. A good sign. We were decimated at midfield, yet only 1 point behind as time ran out. Sean o Shea got the full on Lee Keegan treatment off the ball, make no mistake. He will learn. Aiden O Shea was allowed do what he liked and should have walked long before he did. How I would love to have a Lee Keegan and an Aiden O Shea in the Kerry engine room, if we did I'd be fairly confident of us meeting most challenges this summer. We had the look of a very green team, when the heat was turned up we couldn't deal with it because we haven't been there before. A lot of doom and gloom afterwards, I'm surprised at that. We are making steady progress, as na Crócaigh said yesterday, a semi final place is about as good as we can hope for this year, after that you'd never know. Stephen O Brien was consistently excellent yesterday, O Connor showed flashes of his enormous potential, as did Clifford. Jason Foley was excellent when he came in. Jameso was a shadow of the player he was, the appetite for the battle appears to have disappeared, unfortunately. Mayo were better that us yesterday, we have lots to work on. Patience needed.

Glad to see most posters positive today. Veteran's , as usual, the most inspirational of all. The copper shirts have to go. Roll on the championship. James Horan said that Mayo could have won by 10 or 12 points. Ridiculous!, they'll overhype themselves now. Truth is, Kerry could have snatched it in the end.

Brendan Kealy has been in as goalkeeping coach since December. I'd imagine he has only been fully involved since Kilcummin won the intermediate in mid February. He did the goalkeeping warm up with Murphy and Kelly before the Mayo match in Tralee.

Not saying he isnt but, why is it assumed he is the best option. I think its between him and Murphy. I still think Murphy was harshly treated when dropped last year. Ryan had the type of movement in front of him that was engineered by Kerry for the first half yesterday Murphy could have only dreamt of last year against Galway. I have no problem with Ryan being number one but every one has to admit he has a very obvious weakness under the high ball that has reared its head multiple times during the league. Its not even a weakness its poor decision making most of the time. He gave a punch back into his own goalmouth against dublin, fluffed a high one when he went to punch it against galway. Went to pull one down that was going over the bar against Monaghan that eventually hit the bar. Let one go through his hands in the last min against Monaghan and then yesterdays mistake. Then you have instances where he does well on his line or fielding those tricky ones that are just dropping beneath he bar. He plays the sweeper keeper effectively mostly. I don't know if its a concentration thing or not or whats going on but, it cant be ignored either. Its fine to say is his first year etc and i get that but at what point if the issue isnt sorted does it become a liability?

I agree with a lot of whats been said before so I won't repeat it. While it's disappointing to lose a final I must admit that I didn't have huge confidence in a win, Mayo are always tough opponents and it seems a bit early for this team , give them time and it will come. Shane Ryan had a very good performance barring one mistake, I wouldn't be calling for change. Paul Murphy was immense as was Stephen O Brien. I'm not convinced that Jameso is fully fit or else that his injuries have caused a confidence issue. Dara Moynihan was having a good day , his injury put a stop to him yesterday but I look forward to seeing him play for years to come. Mayo bullied us but yesterday was a learning curve. We will be back.

Surprised no one brings this up more often. When you lose defenders of the caliber of Mick Mac, Tomas O Se, Tom O Sullivan Marc O Se, Aidan O Mahoney, Seamus Moynihan etc, no keeper coming in is going to do strongly given that loss. There's probably 20 all stars worth of experience there. In terms of the kick outs, these boys can put it anywhere they want. They don't suddenly join the kerry set up and become bad keepers. Since O Se left, we have missed a primary ball winner. I think keepers in the last few years have been in a tough spot.

We'd have been happy with a mid-table league...the extra game will have been a very welcome bonus. Probably better than a week long training camp. Plenty of lessons from yesterday that will be reflected in years to come. I was very impressed by the number of block downs from our lads...a true sign of effort. Shane Ryan will be a top, top goalkeeper. The forwards will be grand, but getting a midfield that can break even will be the target for this year...the half back line should be supporting a sagging midfield rather than the half forward line.
Some kicks for scores from very difficult positions needs to be looked at as well...taking low percentage shots rather than working the ball to a more favourable position around the D before shooting from there.
Plenty to work on, and plenty to feel positive about for the next decade, but maybe 2019 a bit early in team development. Although if firing on all cylinders we can match almost anyone.

The hokey pokey you refer to between the sticks needs to stop. It is pick and stick time.

a few comments on the match
think people are harsh on Shane Ryan and Tommy Walsh
Thought we lost shape when Tommy went off
Didn't hit Clifford with enough or the right type of ball
still concerned the way we can be opened up for goals when good teams run at us

still concerned the way we can be opened up for goals when good teams run at us well lets look it this way. mayos 2nd goal was a shot at a point that dropped short. their 3rd goal wed pushed on and came in 74th minute with nobody inside our 45. mayo missed a couple of goals chances, so did we. both teams could have had 4 or 5 goals yesterday but it wasnt so much running at us that cost us yesterday - we got 2 goals from running at Mayo and should have got a 3rd. all teams are vulnerable if you do it.

Folks I foolishly forgot to record the match before I set off yesterday. Does anybody know if it’ll be repeated or if I can get it online? I was right down at the hill end so didn’t have a great view of a lot of things during the game.

Skills are there in my opinion its getting to the pitch of senior ic and the lack of time and space in comparision to underage/club. Also nerves played a part tough on sos and clifford expected to lead the team at 20 years of age!! I like the two players in question a lot but they are a little one-footed. I like both players too and feel Tom could play midfield no problem But I coach a U12 team and there no way they get away with Not kicking off both sides Tom and Jack would improve 25 to 30 % but Jesus shouldn’t that be sorted years ago ?? Coaching 101 !!!

To answer veterans question regarding the substitution of Kevin McCarthy, he seemed to have an arm/shoulder injury before being taken off.

a reoccurance of the injury from the Roscommon match I'd imagine. He left in a sling that day. seemed to have been carrying his arm oddly for some time before he came off yesterday.

Exactly. Everyone concedes goals. Points too. It's part of the game. This thing of Kerry being vulnerable when teams run at them is little more than a cliche. Like, who isn't? Realistically, the only way to stop it is constant blanket defence. You can be open to conceding goals or you can turn into Donegal 2012 with Clifford & co. camped inside their own 45. Any takers for that?

He'll be fine. Has plenty of cutting to make a fine Kerry keeper.

Gees, listening to and reading reports on the game you'd swear we lost by twenty points. Mayo deserved to win but it seems that whenever Kerry lose by 3-4 points that 'they should've lost by more'. People seem to forget that Kerry missed a huge amount of chances as well yesterday. Clifford was called back for a very soft free early in the game for a goal and we dropped a lot of shots into the goalies hands in the first half. It's rare that David takes the wrong option but he did at the end when he chose not to catch the ball which would have led to a goal and out us in the lead in injury time. We did a lot of things right yesterday. Mayo's half backs weren't as dominant as they usually are. Lee Keegan may have nullified Sean O'Shea to a large extent but didn't really feature in an attacking sense and Stephen O'Brien gave Durcan a torrid time. Tom O'Sullivan did well on McLoughlin and Jason Foley looked good when he came on. Clifford was very good and will be even better with a bit more match sharpness. He was born to play in Croke Park! I also thought Shane Ryan was excellent except for that second goal. We do really need Moran at his best to anchor midfield but all is not lost.

Congrats mayo and commiserations kerry but what a great league ye had..just read veterans post there and I must say he gave a very wise analysis of yesterday's game.. He should be a panelist on the Sunday game... Agree with a lot of what he says and I think also we have a lot to be hopeful about.. Yesterday's match should only improve them..invaluable experience against a seasoned mayo side.. Should only make us stronger for the championship.. Exciting times ahead for kerry!!
