If there was a minor player of the year my vote would go to him. I wonder has his blunder in the TG4 interview anything to do with it?

A good piece from Wolly and well on the money too. Interesting comment re attacking Dublin and breaking the 20 point barrier. As he said, what is there to lose...........teams are losing by 10 points anyway trying to contain them. As Parkinson says, targetting one county for excessive funding is wrong. It is also unfair. But as long as other counties continue to put up with this nothing will change. Cian o Neill made a stand for whats the correct thing this year with the newbridge or nowhere stand. Are all counties so supine and lilly livered to not make a stand on a critical issue like this or are they happy to be handmaidens for Dublins perpetual dominence.

The minor team of the year goes to show what a waste of time these things are.
I wonder how the judges were and how many games they were at.
Munster and All Ireland medals will make up for the glaring mistakes I hope.

The competition itself is a bit of farce tbf cork were the best team kerry played, but because they are in munster and only played 2 games they didnt have a chance in these nominations! Paul o shea is just ridiculous best in the country and probably by a distance, be like fenton not getting an all star.because the leinster championship had so many games And seems to be more high profile there are 5 players on the team when meath and kildare were soundly beaten outside the province.

And Cork, the team that ran us closest, got nothing.

Picking teams of the year , All-Stars etc is a spurious business. Too much bias, too subjective etc. I put little weight on them. I have one rule of thumb however. If a player or two who should be automatic choices are omitted then I place the team in the joke basket. I have been lucky to have seen all Kerry’s matches this year. Unquestionably, their most consistentently outstanding player has been Paul OShea. By a mile. By ten miles.
No Paul O’Shea on the team. Joke basket time.

Paul O Shea is a strange omission . I would’ve presumed him to be nailed on . The young player of the year is an interesting one. I think both players ( Howard and Clifford ) were magnificent this year .

Apart from relying on McKenna's numbers, does anyone actually know how funds are/were divided? Where is the money spent? Who is accountable? Is capital expenditure included? Cork, Mayo, Kildare county boards receiving bailouts. I haven't got the time (too lazy) to do the homework on this subject, but there are an awful lot of assumptions being made in terms of Dublin getting more than they should pro rata. I'd exclude AIG money because it doesn't come from GAA pot. Why aren't the 31 kicking up a storm via Congress motions etc? Genuine question, would love if someone apart from McKenna rantings could enlighten me or us.

We all dont have the luxury of being able to play our home games in Croke Park you know. Speaking of bailouts, have a look at what your sponsors were bailed out by the US Treasury.

As Wolly said in his piece, the question of money in the Dublin equation won't go away.

Kieran Donaghy believes Kerry should discontinue their long tradition of the county champions selecting the senior team captaincy if they are to be as competitive as possible against the likes of Dublin in the future.
Donaghy, who announced his inter-county retirement last Tuesday, captained Kerry in 2015 after his club Austin Stacks won the county championship the previous autumn.
But even though he describes that experience as one of the honours and highlights of a lifetime, Donaghy, in a wide-ranging interview which appears in tomorrow’s Irish Examiner, contends that in future the Kerry manager should select the captain, as is the custom in every other county now other than Kerry and Kilkenny.
“I think the manager should pick his captain. There’s enough of an honour when you win your county championship and you were one of the men who helped drive them over the line.
“And if you’re on the Kerry panel and you’re in the manager’s plans and you’re a leader, then the manager might still pick you as captain. It’s not like it’s discounting you from the role.
“But if the manager would prefer to pick someone else whose club didn’t win the county, then, of course, he should be allowed to pick that player as the captain.”
Donaghy remains the last player to score a goal in an All-Ireland final won by someone other than Dublin — in the intervening four years every available Sam Maguire has been received by Stephen Cluxton whose club Parnell’s have never won a county championship during his career. advertisement
And although Kerry have maintained a tradition of bringing the cup back to the club of the team captain and reigning county champions, Donaghy argues the county must move with the times if they want the cup back in Kerry at all.
“We’ve done all that. We’ve been that soldier. We wanted to win it for Gooch in 2011, lads wanted to win it for me in 2015, they wanted to win it for Darragh Ó Sé in 2002. It has no bearing on winning or losing the All-Ireland.
“People say afterwards, ‘We wanted to win it for Páidí.’ But there was no fella running for a ball going, ‘I want to win this ball for Páidí Ó Sé.’ The ball was thrown in, the game was on and that was it.
“In fairness in my time we had lads who weren’t involved a lot who still made good captains. You don’t have to be involved all the time to be a good captain. When Darran O’Sullivan got it in 2009, people were saying, ‘Oh, he’s a bit young.’ He was 23. But Darran was brilliant as a captain that year.
The important thing is your captain should be a guy who can pick a lad up or can also go and say, ‘What you’re doing isn’t good enough. There’s more in you, we need more from you.’ You go over and sort it out.

I wouldn't pay to much heed to that little rant, just a touch of PTSD after the trauma of 2015!

Most of us are speculating about the shape of things to come in the new set-up. Having seen a good few of the Co. Championship games I would agree that it is unlikely that there is anyone out there who has been overlooked or escaped through the net.
I would like, however, to recommend one that hasn’t yet been given that opportunity and deserves a chance to demonstrate his ability. I am referring to Shane Ryan. What most of us know is that he was offered the opportunity to audition for the goalkeeping duties but that he wanted to play outfield. No need to go into that as most people have some version of the story.
But don’t quarantine a lad, thinking it’s going to make him change his mind. I never want a player to walk away from the game because of his belief in his own ability – in this case, to play outfield. If you ask most coaches what the most important attribute they look for in a player, self-confidence is close to the top of the list.
Give the player a second chance – a chance to demonstrate his ability. No one wants to succeed more than the player himself. Let the player know that it’s okay to have ambition and that you believe in him.
I have seen Shane play outfield for his club several times and he certainly is effective at that level. He is nearly always good for five or six points. Let’s see if he can make the step up. We also need to teach these young men the value of affirmations. There are enough people out there who will tell them they can’t do something; they don’t need a negative voice in their head.

Interesting sentiments. Probably easier to mould younger players into the siege mentality. As they get older and more discerning, less so and Cavanagh seems to be articulating that. Harte seems quite the contradiction, urging his teams to 'hate' and speaking Christianity (I use the term broadly) and faith on the other hand.

His spat with RTE is a joke too. And be has spun it so most of his northern cohort believe that John Murray was jeering his poor unfortunate daughter.
John Murray was guilty of producing a very un-funny sketch aimed at Harte's love-in with Brian Carthy.
There was a song playing in the background about a pretty girl from Omagh and it was spun that Michaela was the reference of that song.
The Harte family are not from Omagh. They are from Ballygawley.
(I never heard of the song before either)

Not a surprise really the "kindly uncle " persona harte puts out is in direct opposition to the way his teams play. Also some of the worst people ive known would be sitting front and center at mass!

I dont believe for one second that the John Murray Show intended that as a reference to Mickey poor daughter.

Sean Boylan was a similar "uncle" type and his teams would pull your head off at his behest. The difference being they were very up front about it. Hartes teams were more sleeveen.

I dont believe for one second that the John Murray Show intended that as a reference to Mickey poor daughter. I don't think anyone believed it was a direct reference to Michaela. That song is around a long long time. However even without taking it literally i.e the Harte's not being from Omagh etc, I think it was still incredibly tactless and stupid of the RTE producer who allowed it to go to air. They could easily have chosen another song i.e 'I won't back down' (Tom Petty or Neil Young I'm not sure which ) or something like that so as to illustrate that Harte still wouldn't talk to them over Carthygate. Imagine the furore on here if something tragic happened to a young Kerry GAA woman and RTE played the 'Rose of Tralee' as part of a skit about some issue with her father. Nobody would imagine that the 'Rose of Tralee' had been written about the young girl, but the idea of choosing that song would hardly be considered in good taste.
