I’m surprised O’Brien got selected. I am presuming that the management identified pace as the main missing ingredient in the half forward line and looking through the subs he appears to be the only one that fits this criteria (Darran would appear to be the closest alternative but I’m not sure how quick he is these days). Pace can be a blessing and a curse. Some fellas can develop real bad habits when they are underage as they rely on their pace to get them out of trouble and their reading of the game doesn’t get developed at all. You can get away with it underage but when you reach senior level the margins get finer and things can catch up with you. I think this is what has happened O’Brien (I only saw him a couple of times underage but he has all the hallmarks) and its hindering him big time now. He’s a very reactive player and I think that's why he's so poor defensively. He’s not reading the play and setting himself. He has a tendency to sell himself and lunge into a tackle with his hands high.
Brainless is the one word that keeps coming into my mind when I watch O’Brien, he doesn’t seem to think his way through the play. He’s a bit of a head down merchant when he’s carrying the ball (kind of like Darran) and then runs into traffic and usually loses possession. He doesn’t play with his head up at all. Any man that commits a reckless neck high challenge 20 seconds after getting booked is just not thinking. Not to mention getting involved with opponents and kicking the ball away. There are more subtle ways of doing these instead of his sledgehammer approach. He seems more concerned with these elements of the game instead of concentrating on playing ball.
I don’t have any personal vendetta against the man but I would be looking at him a bit bewildered if I was his team mate. From the video evidence he seems to be making the same mistakes in nearly every game. I am sure he's an intelligent man but does he reflect on his performances at all. I hope he proves me wrong and puts in a mature performance today. He has potential but needs a lot of polishing. At the moment he can do damage against the weaker counties but would be easy fodder against the all Ireland contenders.

Didn't see that coming, some fwd line now, I'd say it's tactical as Donaghy doesn't seem to be injured,

When did we last score 7 goals in Championship last? Can't take too much from that one. Some lovely high fielding and link up play in the square.

If there is a team that wont get carried away with this its Kerry.
Great display. NEVER expected this from Kildare although the turn around is an awful set back.
Well done to the team today. All you can do is play whats in front of you.

Kildare were awful good to see Galvin Keane and Darren doing well. Hopefully O'Donoghue will be alright as we won't have it that easy again. Tommy Walsh made some great catches. Our bench will play a big part from here on in.

That game was of nearly zero use to Kerry.. The Kildare backs were about as loose as you will see, on TV at least it really was terrible.. It would be a shame if O'Donoghue picked up a serious injury out of that.. From the television it looked like the physio was trying to pop in a dislocated shoulder, they were doing a lot of contorting of his arm, and if it were a wrist injury I don't think they would be twisting and turning it like that.. Lets hope it is a short term injury, but it looked bad from the telly at least. Fair play to Stephen O'Brien. I think he answered many critics today. I had been wondering myself if he was going to explode onto the scene and the Kildare backs absolutely played into his hand. The last thing you want to do with him is give him open space to run at as he is lethal fast. Lets hope he can keep the form up, he was excellent in the first half, and took his goal well in the second. Fair play also to Darren, I was commenting at half time to one of the lads that it must be tough on him as he seemed to be becoming a fringe player, and to quote myself 'you don't feel he is going to come on and do wreck'.. He quickly proved me wrong and I'm delighted for him. P. Geaney had a very poor day, I think he got one point, but fumbled a lot of ball which is uncharacteristic. No the preparation you'd want going into a semi final, but you can only beat what is in front of you, the recovery time should not be long for most of the lads as hardly any, maybe bar midfield broke out of second or third gear. One of those days when you'd be hard pressed to find Kerry players who didn't perform well!

I'm glad for Darran, that he got a run and did well, but feel a bit for M Geaney. He could have been brought on instead of Buckley.

It's the shoulder according to reports, didn't look good the way he was holding it. He landed arm straight, as in not twisted so hope it might not be too bad. He would be a fierce loss even with a motoring Gooch. Maybe the Gooch will replace the significance of the 2014 role James played.
I'm getting ahead of myself, Fitzmaurice played it down. Let's hope the scan shows minimal damage.

Those shoulder injuries are a curse. Once they pop at all.....

Two players really have arrived this year for Kerry, Enright and O'Brien. Also saw Gooch's 2nd coming today! Enright playing very well all year alright. Barry O'Driscoll skinned Stephen the first day. He really did put his hand up today through. When our forwards were struggling a bit early on Stephen's scores kept us ticking over. I'm even more confused as to why Tommy Walsh wasn't brought on the first day against Cork when David Moran got the black card. Surely he could have competed with Alan O'Connor to quell the dominance?

Its a shame for him....3 Weeks??

Look lads great positives all the same.
Gooch a bad knock but played the 70.
Enright..... Tom O Sullivan reincarnate.
Marc minded. O Mahony another 70.
If James is sidelined BJK is becoming an able deputy.
The power house of midfield....
Darren speedy. Tommy not looking out of place. Galvin back in the fold.
I know this might sound picky BUT Murphy after 60mins made a few silly mistakes. And the same last year in the final when McBrearty impressed. Something to work on when you are being forensic about things maybe?

Congrats to the Kerry team and Management today. Pity about James as he was really getting into it. Hopefully it is just that the shoulder that has popped out and not dislocated. We won't know till we hear the scan results.
