Sheehan the greatest club/district player in the possibly ever? I couldn't think of a player who could do what he did today I have only read about it, but Mick O'Dwyer bringing Waterville to the brink of a County Championship in multiple years must be up there.

Some performance alright by Bryan Sheehan...led by example all through. SK can thank him tonight...I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that without him, they would have been cleaned.

Bryan Sheehan was absolutely outstanding today, despite the black card. Today a just reward for all his efforts throughout the campaign, embodiment of commitment, leadership and determination.
Legion ultimately made more mistakes, and they paid the ultimate price. When JOD wasn't on form, nobody really stepped up to take the mantle in the forwards. Flashes of brilliance, but execution just wasn't there. Legion are lacking some leaders - some senior players to drive them on and settle the ship, but they'll learn from today no doubt. No question this was a chance missed, and a better one might be a long while presenting itself.

Well done to south kerry, justice for the poor refereeing desicions and score that was wide in drawn game.Great credit is due to John sugrue and his management team for setting his team up to be defensively sound and playing to their strengths, they knew they didn't have the forwards to win a shootout and that legion would need goals to win they put a system together to address this hence only conceded one goal in over 160 minutes of football.questions will have to be asked of legion and how they left sizeable leads after them in both games, they are very much an ordainary side with an over realiance on jod and also on team selection and tatics . Peter Keane 's record will show a bare enough cupboard bar a div 2 county and east Kerry league title unless they can pick themselves up and finish the year on a high by win the o donghue cup and county league but his record shows he has lost more big games then won, hopefully this trend doesn't continue with the Kerry minors

South Kerry 1-13 Legion 1-12 AET FT 1-11 1-11
Well, one could not expect much more from this match. It was a wonderful contest with some great scores, plenty of mistakes with players extending themselves to the limit and not a hint of malice. Fittingly, the result was not decided until each contestant had taken his last breath, more or less. One would have to feel sorry for Legion at the end but then does a team which had scorched into a seven point lead in the second half of regulation time and allow themselves to be overhauled deserve too much sympathy. Of course, in deference to South Kerry it has to be recorded it was not as simple as Legion "allowing themselves to be overhauled". Not for the first time in this competition, South displayed bottomless heart. Ultimately, that is why they are champions for 2015.
Legion looked to be the better team from flag drop. Tom Moriarty,a shining light at corner forward for about thirty five minutes and much too good for Brian Sugrue during that period, could have a goal in the first minute and certainly should have a point later on. He deservedly got a point later in the half. It was noticeable that JO'D was being double marked and that Conor Keane was also attracting swarms when he won possession on the forty, even though he was still a threat. But it was the aforementioned Tom Moriarty and, above all, Billy McGuire at wing forward, who caused most menace in the Legion forward line in that opening half. However, the scores were slow accumulating. Bryan Sheehan started to exert himself at midfield and electrified the crowd with his point scoring from play, massive efforts. I think there were three in all. Those ridiculous points pushed South Kerry into a two point lead. It was short lived. Conor Keane kicked a peach of a pass over friend and enemy to the onrushing Jamie O'Sullivan. Jamie made a few yards and rewarded Conor's peach of a pass by crashing it home. Not long afterwards Conor took his cue from Bryan Sheehan and booted over from a long distance. Legion led by four at the break and deserved it, maybe even more.
Legion had stretched their lead to seven early in the second half and it is no exaggeration to say that South Kerry's death warrant appeared to be signed. It would take something extraordinary for them to gain a reprieve. Extraordinary things do happen. I suppose any time Bryan Sheehan is on the field one should allow for extraordinary things. He won possession about thirty five/forty metres out. Now, I am not good at anticipating what is about to unfold in a match but I turned to the man next to me and said watch this. As soon as Bryan got that ball he appeared to me to be possessed by some force. He ploughed and carried and dummied and cannoned. Goals of that quality, when they are most needed, are rare. As I say, it was inevitable. Every South Kerry man now stretched to seven feet while, conversely, Legion players looked to be suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome, even though they well still a few points in profit. They simply knew that Mr. Death was hovering. To their credit, they did not immediately bend the knee and coming into the home straight it looked as if they would win by a nose until Killian said no. We are not done yet ,before putting over the equaliser.
As often happens in extra time, very little happens. Indeed there was no score in the opening period. Notably, Bryan Sheehan got a black card, harsh in the context that there were other contenders for black cards ignored earlier. Notably also, JO'D went off in that period with what appeared to be a recurrence of his shoulder dislocation. He came on at some stage in the second period of extra time. If indeed the shoulder was dislocated and that it was subsequently reduced then it is nothing short of criminal to have sent him back on.
The second period of extra time was punctuated, not unusually, by players going down with exhaustion and injuries, not least the once incomparable Declan who had lined out from the start without having influencing matters to any great degree, until---. There was no score in the first half of extra time. There were three scores in the second period. The indomitable Podge O'Connor, heroic all through, came up to score his second point of the second half. Would that be the winner? South Kerry sallied forth and were awarded a free of the soft variety. Daniel Daly put it over, his second after coming on as a sub. Level again. Legion effected another attack with the ball reaching the wing forward, Kevin Breen. Hapless Kevin Breen. Kevin dallied in possession, unsure what to do but committed to not losing the ball at the very least. He who hesitates is lost. Nobody knows that better tonight than Kevin. He dallied too long. He was penalised. Declan collected the ball and called on all the craft he has accrued since he made his debut alongside Brian Boru all those years ago. He looked up, saw the unmarked Aiden Walsh making his break, and duly placed it in the grateful basket of the forward rushing St. Mary's man. Aiden burst forward with the speed of a gazelle through sparsely populated prairie. There was no catching him before he fisted it over. He may never score a more precious one.
It is always an exaggeration to say that one man wins a match on his own. It his highly offensive to team colleagues if nothing else. The most inoffensive way I can put it is that South Kerry would not have prevailed without Bryan Sheehan. He scored 1-3 from play and two from frees. He was without equal.
P.S. I make it my business to arrive at a match in plenty of time, no matter where it is played. Today was no exception. But it appears, no matter what time a match is scheduled, there are plenty of people who make it their business to arrive as late as possible. Today, the match was delayed by ten minutes to accommodate the latecomers. The laggards are rewarded while the early arrivals are discommoded. Is there any other sports organisation in the whole wide world who tolerate people who are indifferent to the official starting time.

in defence of the late comers there were huge queues. it took about 15 minutes to get the ticket from the single van on site. i dont get why, when all the turnstiles are manned, we cannot pay on the gate to a game that was never ever going to approach a sell out.

“There’s a feeling of great joy and I want to emphasise that word: joy. It’s fabulous and we got our due rewards for what we had worked and strived for all during the year despite resistance.”..John Sugrue quoted in the Examiner today!! Gas man!
Veteran as usual has summed up the match very well, but just to add my tuppence worth. I thought that Legion were very naive obviously. Bryan Sheehan's 3 great points in the first half were super kicks to watch, but there was little or no pressure put on him. Legion players (including his marker) backed off him and almost invited him to shoot, which is a crazy tactic obviously. For Sheehan's goal also, he was allowed to waltz in 1 v 1 far too easily, when it was OBVIOUS he was going to go for goal.
Anyway, most of the impressive performances were on the South Kerry side. Sheehan obviously, Young, Denis Daly impressed me at times, Dan Daly (how he doesn't start is beyond me) offered a lot when he came in, Aidan Walsh scored 3 vital points and showed amazing composure with the winning point, Paul O'Sullivan is a very dogged defender, Bernard Walsh had his moments. The man who epitomised how and why South Kerry are champions today though was Declan. What a warrior. He was barely able to walk and yet refused to yield, dragging himself off the ground on several occasions. He didn't do anything spectacular but he provided a massive presence when it was needed and when he got on the ball, he repeatedly shrugged off multiple Legion men before offloading to a team mate in space. It was he who delivered the pass to Aidan Walsh for the winner I believe. What a man, what an example to young players.
On the Legion side I would have to give praise to Podge O'Connor. I thought he was excellent. People will mention his 2 points, which were very good scores (the one with the outside of the boot from 40m especially) but his carrying of the ball AND more importantly a few of the blocks and interceptions were of more relevance. He was roasted in the League a few years ago against Cork in Tralee and not seen since. He wasn't ready then, but he looks ready now to me. Conor Keane showed flashes, one massive score in the 1st half, but not a lot else. Some poor shot options later on. He was well marked in fairness and has been struggling with injury so won't be too harsh. He needs to toughen up to play at the top level though. He was down for about 3 minutes after getting one rib-tickler in front of the stand from his marker and although it was definitely a free (and should have been yellow), my first thought was that he needs to harden up as he'll get far worse down the line. His vision and pass for Legions goal and his great point from play show that he has class, he just needs to build on it. Look forward to seeing him at u21 level in the spring. Jameso is struggling with the shoulder and the effects of a long couple of years. He had 2 or 3 men on him all day and had little to no effect on the game as a result. He needs to rest and get the shoulder sorted. Jonathan Lyne was disappointing I thought. He was very quiet and didn't exactly cover himself in glory defensively either. After a long year of course aswell, so hard to keep going. Legion just didn't have enough nous in the forward line especially and were way too slow and predictable on the ball around the middle third at times. Only with the injection of pace that Conor Keane, Podge O'Connor and Darragh O'Doherty occasionally brought, could they reap any reward. Legion have a very young squad though and once they get over this, should build on it. On a final note. People gave out (maybe with justification) about the ref in the drawn game, but this was worse officiating to me. Not only were 3 stonewall black card offences ignored by the referee in the 1st half, he repeatedly allowed both teams to delay frees by standing in front of the taker, kick the ball away, hold the free-taker back etc..really annoying to see that sh*t go unpunished. As i said already there were quite a few reckless tackles that went uncarded also: closed fist, high tackles etc.

was it a case of one team wanting to win it and one team trying not to lose it? after their escape in the drawn game legion played super football in the first half, conor keane was on fire from frees and play, only brian sheehan bombed over same superb scores to keep s kerry in touch. 7 points up 5 min into the second half legion started playing across the field and abandoned the fast ball into the forwards that worked so well in the first half. s kerry tactic was similar to donegal, direct running as seen by brian sheehans goal, quick ball in and pass to the runner coming from deep. looking at it on replay, with the amount of defenders between him and goal how was he left waltz through?. leadership now required but only s kerry had leaders and killian young slotted a leveler to bring us to extra time. sheehan and jod were gone in first period of 10. [was there 3 min of play?] podge put legion in front s kerry leveled then the field marshall set up the winning point when walsh ran 50 metres to punch over the winner[in fairness he did solo and hop it on the way!] legion will be sick, but why didnt they play jod on one side and conor keane on the other side of a 2 man full forward line and kick the ball in when they were leading? the taking off of tom moriarty was a strange move as he had the beating of his man. podge in fairness ran and attacked, johnaton lyne did the game pass him by? south kerrys subs made a big difference as they ran and stopped the quick legion kick out. ironic that the most influencial player at the end was the man who could not run at all declan o sullivan.
brian sheehan, was there ever a captain who had a bigger influence on not just a county final but over the whole championship, a superb display.
s kerry had 7 players from div 5 of the county league and no div 1 player starting, what would the review committee think of that?
as regards the late start why not open 2 stiles to take money from the people going to the terrace from the bypass?

With due respect, it’s no secret that James’s shoulder wasn’t right all this year and a lot of 2014 and he hasn’t returned to pre-injury levels. It has affected his game and that’s to be expected. The shoulder is the principle point of contact and in my observations he is understandably inhibited by the injury or risk of re-injury. The man’s shoulder was encased in a strange and almost tribal pattern made out of tape resembling crop circles. I also think that an uneasy feeling of concern descended on the stadium yesterday when James re-entered the battle. The kind of determination and tenacity that James demonstrated is commendable. Sometimes, however, it lands players in the office of an orthopedic surgeon and the long term risk to his well-being should be paramount. Wiser heads would have acted differently. Legion will be disappointed at a lost opportunity but Sth. Kerry deserved their victory – if only for the manner of the fight back. From a Kerry point of view, I don’t think Eamon Fitzmaurice had too many names written into his notebook going home yesterday.

I couldn't think of a player who could do what he did today Was at the game and this man is the greatest Club/District player i have seen! This man has leader skills and will more than likely make a fantastic Kerry captain which he truly deserves! That South Kerry team was so young but you have gallant soldiers like Declan O Sullivan how many times did we see that knee go from under him but he kept going and wouldn't come off he is an inspiring player! Finally the man that deserves huge credit is Killian Young the renard man was immense in the two games he was not only marking James but he was powering up the field and that point he kicked out by the stand was something else fair play to Killian a very nice fella who was outstanding on his task! Legion have only themselves to blame 7 points up they had to push on but they sat back and invited South Kerry onto them Peter Keane did not have the subs to change the game like South Kerry did Greg Gibson Oran Clifford Robert Wharton Daniel Daly these men would start most sides! John Sugrue put in some effort also commuting from PortLaois for trainings in Barraduff the base for this South Kerry teams trainings and by all accounts they have been well organised by William Harmond fair play to South Kerry have a soft spot for these men fair play hard luck to legion ye are young ye will learn ye have bright days ahead no doubt in my mind about that!

Sheehan is surely the only vote for Kerry Captain in 2016? If he can just keep off the physio's table. Killian was equally immense in defence over both games and his point from under the stand to tie up the contest at the end was audacious in nature coming from a full back with other major responsibilities on the line. The outcome of South Kerry Championship will decide who captains Kerry next year. That still has a month to play out. The district will reflect in time. Bryan was certainly the stand out player on view and as Maurice has said in media, post replay, Bryan is the best club player of the past 10 years in Kerry. That is possibly true as he is completely equipped to dominate in club football. Strength combined with massive kicking ability. Players such as Adian O'Mahoney and Kieran Donaghy for example match him in terms of heart and commitment to the club. The overall package, it is hard to argue with Maurice. What can we say about Declan, the ultimate warrior, Dromid Peares, South Kerry and Kerry footballer to the very core. He was the glue that held the package together in the extra time. Hopefully he didn't do any further serious damage to his knee. The only shame is that he cant enjoy club football fully for the next 3-4 years due to the serious conditions of his knees. Declan was spectacular when leading South Kerry to the 2009 championship, it was Bryan's turn this year. Bryan, Declan and Killian have been massive for South Kerry football over the last 10 years and have never been found wanting. As a trio of South Kerry and Kerry footballers that came from the same generation they will be highly regarded and highly thought of in South Kerry as time moves on, commanding the ultimate respect locally. What struck me most about Sunday's final was the manner in which the younger south Kerry players put their chests out and stood up to the plate after the departure of Byran Sheehan. To a man not one of them dropped their heads but they dug deep and delivered. Several of them became leaders and lead from the front line. Therein lies the real strength in the character of this particular collection of South Kerry players. Finally, hard luck to Legion. It takes two to create a great final and the contest was titanic in nature throughout the two games between both finely matched teams. A second replay wouldn't have been a bad outcome last Sunday due to the contributions of both sets of players during the two games. It was a privilege to have seen both games. Looking at what both teams brought to the table and looking around the country at the various county finals and the brilliant provincial championships leading to the club All-Ireland serious at senior, intermediate and junior level, we really need to bring the game back to the grassroots and get the fixtures schedule sorted ASP. We really need to embrace four regional groups of eight at National level and streamline the fixtures at club and county level. Bryan Sheehan wouldn't come off for Maurice recently because he was enjoying his football too much. The ratio of training to games was obliterated. Do we need any further proof in the eating of the pudding? Club players love nothing more than the having the county players around and playing ball.

Congrats to South Kerry. Legion will come again.
not sure about the number of steps taken for the winning point? It's a bug bear of mine as the four steps rule is not implemented by refereees these days (unless the player is advancing in loads of space with no body near him).
