Did he ever have credibility as a journalist? Honestly didn't even know he was a "journalist".

As a texter to Newstalk last night said:
"if this is the poorest Kerry team in 20 years, I can't wait for the good times !!!"

I'd be interested to hear if anybody e-mailed him about the article and if they got a reply.... I was on the verge of emailing him, especially about his comments regarding Séamus Moynihan NOT being one of the greats. But I had a think about it and decided that the gimp isn't worthy of my time or attention. He's most probably revelling in all of this.

Agree with that Peig. He's loving all the attention in the aftermath of this article. Heard him on "Off the ball" last night. As our Cork friends might say.....he's nothing but a langer! He's loving his increased profile.

It says a lot about how good we are if the likes of Hayes and McGee have to lower themselves to this kind of stuff. I saw the documentary abut Kerry on tape yesterday and some of the stuff McGee said about Kerry was disgusting, saying Kerry have abandoned their heritage and are only a shadow of their past. Between the two of them they have a whopping 3 all ireland medals, one from a push in the back and a few soft frees, the other 2 softly won while the kingdom were in transition. Yet they have to try and put down the greatest footballers of their generation. It says a lot for their belief in what they achieved themselves that thye have to stoop this low

You know a "journalist" is scaping the bottom of the barrel when they write things like 'now I like X people' and 'I have great friends in X' to justify their comments of a team.
Also justifying it by saying sure I've often written stuff like that about my own county and myself.

Liam Hayes' sole aim in his "articles" is to cause controversy and get his name and his weekly "article" more prominence. The best thing to do is not to even bother mentioning him.

Lads I think he may be a genius and here's why. Poor old amateur GAA players aren't well looked after in their playing days - not like today when they all get cushy jobs So Liam Hayes has a plan. He reads Jack O'Connor's book and notices how the Kerry players get riled up when bad stuff is said about them and their team mates. How Darragh destroyed Murphy last year because it was written that Murphy was the best midfielder in the country or about Galvin's black book and how it pysched him up. So Mr. Hayes writes a scurrlious article, damning all things Kerry knowing damn well that it will rise the Kerry players and the county to victory. He then goes down to the Bookies and puts his life savings on kerry beating Dublin. Not a good price but given what he's written he knows they are dead certs. Gooch who he stated was not a great player schools Paul Griffin kicks unreal scores off either foot and dictates the game in the second half. Liam has a wry smile on the side of his face. Cute Kerry hooors indeed!

Lads..... we can all get very exercised about this clown and his articles. Or we can just realise he is writing sensationalist tabloid nonsence and move on. He is trying so hard to be the witty commentator and is just not up to it; he glances across the page and sees Neil Francis writing the rugby opinion piece and is trying hard to get there. But the reality is Francis is witty, usually calls things right and at least has some foundation for most of his more controversial views.
Hayes has been involved in a number of the most high-profile newspaper failures in the last 10 years. Is it any wonder?!!
ps - what a job he did with Carlow too!

i don't think we should accept what he said.those lads who played against dublin have been bursted a gut for the last 5 or six years and in darraghs case 12 years and to have them labelled average players when nothing could be farther from the truth is a disgrace. maybe the county board could release a statement condeming the comments and the paper for printing such aload of crap.i hope the kerry team boycott the papers when it comes to interviews and the like in the future.words can't discribe what a fool that man is.

I dont think it'd be right boycotting the paper cos of what Hayes wrote. Kieran Shannon will probably have a go at Hayes' piece in the same paper next Sunday, I remember he did last year after Hayes made some crazy comments about Mayo on the morning of the semi final last year.

I am not one to phone in sports talk shows or EVER write in a letter to a newspaper. But I felt compelled to write to the Tribune this morning as I am still seething.
To The Editor
The tribune really allowed itself enter the cesspit of journalism this week with yet another pathetic Liam Hayes rant against Kerry football. From the man who predicted Laois would win The All Ireland it was an inherently bitter and nasty piece of opinion which staggered most who read it. Hayes predicted Mayo would win last year’s All Ireland and ended up with egg on his face – and he obviously has not learned his lesson. To declare Kerry’s battling performance against a supercharged Monaghan team the low point in 30 years of Kerry football was the most inherently wrong opinion I think I have ever read in my long career reading about Sport.
Yes, sport is all about opinion but when you allow your rationale to be embittered and declare football geniuses like Cooper and Moynihan as over hyped your writing enters the realms of fiction. His article this week has made him a laughing stock and thankfully the Kerry team used it as a method to ram his twisted prediction down his throat. This Kerry team is class personified – 4 All Irelands in a row in the current climate of Gaelic Football is a STAGGERING achievement. To add to his pathetic ramblings he then went on Radio Kerry and Newstalk to try and back up his laughable pre match prediction that Kerry football was ‘kaput’
It is patently obvious to anyone who has read his columns over the last few years that he has an axe to grind with Kerry football. To have a journalist writing about the GAA for your paper – who is so staggeringly out of touch with the rest of the GAA media, makes your paper look like a sensationalist rag. Are you going to rectify matters and hire someone with a patent knowledge of the game or are you going to carry on down the Liam Hayes gutter journalism route?

Agree HomerJ - yes, it is terrible. but we are giving him what he wants by talking about it. IMO best to forget about it and let the lads do the talking on the field and deliver the back-to-back for the first time in the last 17 years.

I think Liam Hayes was on a high after predicting the emphatic Cork victory the week before. His axe to grind with Gooch & Moynihan may seem outrageous to most but, I think what he meant was that truly great players perform against the best teams on the biggest days and I would regard the Armagh team of '02 and the Tyrone team of '05 to be the two great teams of this decade (besides Kerry) and unfortunately for the two aforementioned players they underperformed on the AI finals of these years so that doubt persists...
Yes, they've taken Mayo, Dublin, Cork to the cleaners on numerous occassions but these teams are anything but world beaters!

Fair play to you trevor!great letter. agreed, fair play. but those c***s dont really give a damn bout us. as just said, the only wait to properly shut these lads up is win the 2 in a row and then brag about "an other golden era in kerry football"

I do accept that his comments were OTT and disrespectful but at half time last Sunday it was advantage Dubs and the half time stunt of displaying the article had an extremely positive effect for Kerry. In retrospect the Dubs appear to be the victims of his trash talk and for all the conspiracy theorists maybe he wanted to provoke a reaction and ensure that Meath folk wouldnt have to listen to the Dubs if they beat Kerry.
