Even if the group is weak it doesn’t mean players well down the pecking order are going to see game time. Ronan Buckley I don’t think gets into last Sunday’s 26. No point giving game time to players who aren’t a real option for the business end. We’ve around 23 who could hope to be apart of the 20 on the big days, that’s loads to share game time around to in the group. Why wouldn't they see game time ? We need more than 26 players given the condensed season. We lost the final last year primarily because we didn't have strength in depth. Tony Brosnan was ill and we lost 1 of our 2 forwards off the bench. A player opting to leave of his own accord is his perogative but there's no upside for Kerry as a team.

Albeit I'm not a county footballer I cannot understand why you would leave a panel now.
There's only 2.5 months left of the season.
The hard winter slog is over.
There is potentially an all ireland medal to fight for.
Makes no sense to me.

You need 30 motivated lads inside in training (do you not?).

You need 30 motivated lads inside in training (do you not?). You do and the inference being motivation comes from within. How do other big squads keep there lads motivated that aren't in the 26 ? How many new faces started for Dublin this year that nobody heard off before this season. You can be sure they were in the training squads well before they got their chance.

Ronan Buckley has had his chance though. He must have thought that he was very unlikely to see Croke park game time and realistically he’d be correct. I wouldn’t be too upset over it, I don’t think it’s great to have too many players entering their late 20s who have never really made the jump hanging around the panel. 5 of last year’s u20s came into the panel this year and there are a few of this year’s who could make the step up next year. There’s more value to be gained from these lads making up the extended panel and using it as a chance to develop.

Only 20 can play on a day if number 25 or 26 are seeing game time in the group who’s being left out? A certain cut off has to be made. I could name about 23/24 names who I could realistically see playing some part in Croke Park for us. You don’t need more than that and in our current situation we don’t have anyone outside of that operating at a high enough level.

Buckley has been one of the standout players in the club championship. Having him involved in internal games is surely a good thing. That may not be enough for him however and that's fine but it's not good for Kerry in my opinion. Plus there's max 6 games left why bother leaving now.

Lads leaving panels is perfectly understandable especially if they aren't getting game time and long term will benefit them. Being extended panel members is largely a waste of time unless they are just out of the 20s. Much better off playing games with their clubs I disagree, Those lads would only benefit the A v B games in Killarney. A lad like Buckley or Burns would atleast make you fight for your spot. Would Buckley or Burns start for Meath or Louth ? They 100% would. So having them in the squad only makes Kerry stronger and them not there makes us weaker. The key word I used there was "them" ie for buckley his game should improve by actually playing games , it's obviously not a good thing for the collective! Unless he is replaced by one of the u20s or a lad in his early 20s who would jump at the chance of joining the panel even if game time this year might be remote

I won't harp on about it but players leaving panels mid season is not good in my opinion.
That said we move on.

Listened to otb said 7 better teams kerry ridiculous statement kerry not playing well but it's still early championship and don't need to peak. Class manager in his dayand legend Joe Kiernan but got I thought his comments were way too over the top and nonsensical

It's Kerry. It's the All Ireland or nowhere. But if we don't get there, I like to think I don't throw my toys out of the pram. But I do get sad. The Agony and the Ecstasy, there is rarely anything in between when it comes to sports, no matter whether one comes from Kerry or Timbukto. I live in a melting pot of GAA supporters, they are no different to ourselves, we are not alone in the animal kingdom. Sure, most years we think we will win the All Ireland, there is a logical reason for that, we are at or near the top more often than not since we won our first All Ireland 121 years ago. Never once have I thought we would win the hurling. Take Mayo for instance, they have believed that they would win the ALL Ireland every year since 2013, this year is no different. They have no fear of Kerry, they feel they match up very well against us. After Killarney last year who can argue! I expect if you ask Ryan O'Donoghue who he thinks will win this year's AI, without hesitation he would say Mayo and he would be right. There isn't much point going into a game expecting to lose.

I think it's now time to forget about him and move on. For whatever reason he just can't keep fit. A year playing club football might sort out the injuries too. Lesser fatigue in the legs and go back to just enjoying playing. I wouldn't rule out a comeback with Kerry then. Just let the body settle a bit.

Okunbar isn't the first or the last player to come back crocked from Aussie rules.
Tommy Walsh instead of a very inexperienced Kieran O'Leary starting the '11 final would have rewritten history.
It must be tough for the lad but I agree let him off and play club football and see can the body recover.

I am very surprised and disappointed that Ronan Buckley has walked away. Any comments I make of course are predicated on Ronan not packing it in for personal reasons.
I have seen a lot of him over the past couple of years in the county championship where he has been one of the most consistent performers and it was inevitable that he would force himself into the Kerry panel. I am not sure how many starts he has had but he has been brought on fairly frequently. He was on the match day panel for the Cork match . I cannot remember if he was brought on that day. He was not the match day panel in Ennis. Obviously, everybody cannot be on the match day panel for every match and perhaps management operate a rotation system in that respect. Of course that match panel will always change to some extent due to injuries, suspensions etc.
I am always disappointed when a player walks away from the Kerry senior panel, I find it hard to appreciate it , when most young boys in the county would give their right hand to pull on that old jersey. Playing for Kerry , no matter how seldom, gives an aura which separates you from the rest of lowly mortals like myself .It confers a status which remains with you forever. Sociologists tell us status increases our self worth. Imagine the status you then acquire when you go on to win that elusive medal. , which is well within the reach of Ronan. I wonder if Ronan and others like him regret in later life that they may have stepped away prematurely. The playing lifespan of an intercounty footballer is relatively short. There will plenty of time for less demanding pursuits.
As I said , I am always surprised when a footballer walks away from the Kerry team. I am flabbergasted when it happens with the NFL and Munster championship behind and the campaign about to reach a crescendo. Most of the hard slog in muddy fields, one hopes at least, is just a bad thought at this juncture. Why now? I am of course excluding the possibility of personal circumstances , the existence of which changes everything and as a consequence you can pretend I never wrote previous lines or the following.
Walking away mid season displays in my view a certain selfishness , a certain thanklessness. Since last October/November approx , Ronan and his colleagues have been “ wined and dined” , if you get my drift , at considerable expense by the County Board in an effort to make them the best footballers they can be. Sure you cannot help becoming a better footballer in that milieu/ camp/ sheltered workshop , in the midst of some generational footballers with dreamlike facilities at your disposal. But Ronan says , thanks but not thanks. Beyond my comprehension.
In the meantime , I sincerely wish Ronan and indeed Michael Burns the best. I hope you will have no regrets.

Whether it be the super star DC or number 34(who is he you may ask, ask no more), the sacrifice is the same, be it the greatest or the latest. It’s an honour to be a part of it for sure, the honour is representing your county is second to none, but I can appreciate that at some point the sacrifice of career or personal life is out weighted against being apart of an intercounty panel. Just thinking about some of the Monaghan v Kerry clashes from my own time, we really did rob them that day in Croker in 2007! Was it Tomas that got us over the line? I remember walking into what used be Sweetmans across O'Connell Bridge to find a group of them huddled at the bar. Couldn't even look them in the eye at that point, just mumbled that we committed daylight theft. They were too depressed to even raise an eyebrow. A far more straight forward affair the year after, I had to laugh waiting outside Easons on O'Connell St for my crew and four sheepish looking young lads in the blue and white coming up to me and asking in hushed tones if I could tell them the quickest way to Croker! My only time in Clones was for the 2018 Super 8s, a day as fine as this one and you'd have sworn you were in a country and western gig given the get up of some of the Monaghan crew around us. One fella in a Stenson, cowboys boots, shorts and airhorn giving it 90. They had us that day as well, the home crowd already celebrating before a certain Mr Clifford announced himself on the senior stage with that goal, I have the bumpersticker on the bag window of the Mondeo. Stuck around to let the traffic die down and the Kerry bus parted us on the main street, a few of us waved and Eamon clinched his fist to us in defiance. I suppose he thought that result could be the making of us that year. Alas Monaghan did their stuff in Salthill so the result in Killarney the same day was null and void. When you think about it, and knowing the history of the 1985 games, they've ran us close in fairness - more than many counties could brag!

Some of them appear to be getting game time in league games before the higher profile players come back in towards the latter stages of the league. These lads still hang on due to injuries, promises of game time etc. But come championship, all bodies are back and they're pushed further and further to the perifery ....until such time they decide to walk before they're pushed. This group of players deserve a bit more honesty in my opinion, and if that means packing the jerseys 22-30 with upcoming 20-24 year olds (lads also possibly without more life commitments), then that's what should happen. Playing for Kerry is a huge, huge honour, but sometimes lads have to weigh up self-respect and external commitments and say I don't want to just be a number at training to make up 15v15's....the commitment is massive

Back to matters on the pitch, I see Rory Beggan is again linked and having trails this week with NFL sides, has to we a serious distraction for Vinny Corry and the panel.

Okunbar isn't the first or the last player to come back crocked from Aussie rules. Tommy Walsh instead of a very inexperienced Kieran O'Leary starting the '11 final would have rewritten history. It must be tough for the lad but I agree let him off and play club football and see can the body recover. Easy to say Tommy Walsh would have made the difference that day. But Kieran O Leary had been around for quite a while at that point.
