No, no, no, think of all the revenue from that massive crowd yesterday that will get reinvested in the GAA. Only Croke Park could handle such a massive crowd... Fair to say that argument gone down faster than the Belgrano The Belgrano... oh, well, everyday is a school day.

Players love McGeeney. He obviously a players man.Kildare players loved him and Armagh seem to too but he lacking tactic wise.Armagh have serious talent but constantly fall short.I would argue Atmagh have as good if not better talent as Kerry but its not being utilised properly.I backed Armagh to win Ulster but as usual they fall short. Surely we can’t let this craziness go unchecked?! You need to call a plumber mate, every barometer you have is broken I don't think a plumber would be much use for a broken barometer.A horologist would be better or a watch maker. If I do need help for something I won't ask you anyway. If my car broke down you d probably send me a Baker to fix it .

Armagh are not better than Kerry.
They've done nothing and won nothing in 16 years.
I fancied Armagh on Sunday purely because they couldn't possibly blow it again.
Yet they did.

If I compared the Armagh team that started vs the Kerry team that started man for man on ‘talent’, it would be 13-2 to Kerry and Joe O’Connor could count himself unlucky he came up against Rian O’Neill and likewise Moynihan vs Turbitt

Is it just me or is it hard to get invested in the championship this year. Seems like nothing is really happening until we get to these group stages, Just on Dublin alone, GAA must be now concerned that the county with by far the greatest population can only get 23k for a Leinster final. This should be an 82k sellout every year, nothing to do with GAA Go. A massive investment is needed in the other big Leinster counties to try and get them to compete with Dublin otherwise the game will die a death even in Dublin. The warning is there from rugby, a full house for a club Semi final. Also if Munster meet Leinster at Croker in the URC it will be another 82k sellout, people are following other sports that have more at stake, more entertainment, more jeopardy etc..., I wonder how many people tuned in to watch the Leinster final, I expect the ratings were low. So GAA please note well, Dublin fans are also getting disinterested, I'm the same. For the first time ever my interest level is very low.Even the group stage is wetting my appetite as 3 out of 4 teams qualifying is a joke with very little jeopardy.Yes many Dublin fans are nt bothered at mo as they know its a foregone conclusion. After such success it will only be quarter final stage or semi against a big team that will get the fans back.Only the real die hard Dub fans are going to games now.Having said that many Kerry folk have stopped going tooA Kerry /Cork championship game used to be one of the highlights of the year and now it a sun drenched Killarney only a small crowd attended and it seemed Cork had even more supporters than Kerry.People gave put about the super 8s but it was more exciting with only 2 qualifying from each group. The gaa scored a massive own goal with this system and I'd be fairly certain this system will be scrapped next year(and rightly so).The championship used to give me the butterflies but at mo I'd say I'll have to wait for the knockout games to get the excitement back.I found the league away more interesting. To be frank and it is hard to say it, the kerry senior football team is poorly supported match attendance wise by kerry people in the championship one can argue the travel factor to Dublin but we are not bringing massive crowds to Fitzgerald stadium either. To be near outnumbered by Cork folk in Killarney when the Cork hurlers were also playing the same weekend is not a great indicator of good Kerry support our league support for home matches was good though

Armagh are a fine team, wouldnt fancy meeting them in an All Ireland QF! whilst a fine team they do obviously lack something to get over the line to win a league or an ulster title Lady luck certainly hasnt smiled on them

Armagh are a fine team but fear is what holds them back fear of being the one to make the mistake rather than doing what would do if it was the first minute ie the process as the dubs would say ! From memory every close game they have been in maybe bar the galway one 2 yrs ago they were in a winning position contrast two pieces of play on Saturday night Kingston for cork took it on himself to take on half the limerick backline and just went for it!
Whereas armagh called three marks in their game tough kicks no doubt but bloody well go for it anyway ! Imagine if seanie had played it safe vs dubs in 22 !!

I can't think of too many Armagh players that are better than their Kerry equivalent.
Infact Armagh are probably 3rd in Ulster.
Derry and Donegal are ahead of them.
I'd make a counter argument that they are were they are because of their manager and yes he's made mistakes but he had unbelievable bad luck as he did with Kildare.

The GAA really don't help themselves at times. A lot of talk lately about GAAGo, and I have some sympathy for the GAA on this, it costs money to send out broadcast teams to these matches, and I've paid for the €79 GAAGo season-ticket.
But I'm just checking the TV schedule for this weekend. We're in the second year of the new football system, which I happen to think is a good one, and it's the first weekend of this stage of the competition. How many games are on television this weekend? A big fat zero.
Kerry-Monaghan and Galway-Derry are both on GAAGo on Saturday, it's hurling on Sunday. Would it have hurt to put one game of the four on?
Can you imagine it, the first weekend of the Premier League season, how many games are on telly? None
They really do make some baffling decisions.

Ah yeah, I've nothing against the hurling being on, but the two hurling games are on Sunday.
There are four last-16 football games on Saturday, and not one of them telly. It just seems a missed promotional opportunity, as well as anything else.

Not terrestrial, but on basic SKY, are BBC showing anything? BBC are showing the Ulster ladies final on their website this weekend (Armagh v Donegal). BBC are scheduled to show live coverage of both AI football semi finals, and the two hurling semi finals (as far as I recall). They will show the two AI finals as well. I’m not sure if they will be showing any of the group games or quarter finals on TV though.

It might even come to pass that Kerry's toughest opponent in this group stage are Louth. EDIT: wtf am I talking about Monaghan are in very long grass. Should have trusted my instinct.

The group stage doesn't have the bite of championship at all that the Munster hurling championship has. While 3 out of the group avoids dead rubbers, it's very flat. Too many safety nets. Louth and Meath might cause Monaghan a few problems.

To deliberately hurt a player by stamping on them is the definition of being a scumbag. Anyone who would even try to defend such an action is equally a lowlife scumbag. I hope Galway hammer Derry in the second half.

Not a good weekend for the Ulster teams, I think galway would've beat Derry anyway without the red. Galway starting to go up the gears now and are looking decent more like the 22 version I'd be more worried playing them than donegal tbh yet they don't seem to be talked about as much as other teams for some reason .

Regarding the small attendances from the 1st round of group games
I think this will be a continued theme throughout the course of this group stage. People are generally looking down in these group games like they are National league games. With 12 counties qualifiying out of 16 to knockout phase, and lets be frank, you could probably predict with relative confidence which 12 teams will progress from the groups which leads to people not attending these games knowing their counties will almost certainly have a knockout game (or games) in late June and July which they will wait for to attend. I was in Killarney yesterday and whilst the crowd was disappointing, it was not a surprise as: 1) Kerry were 1/8 to beat Monaghan. 2) Kerry were almost certain to qualify from the group before a ball was kicked. 3) There was NOBODY talking about the game in Kerry since they beat Clare which lead me to believe that people had no interest in the game and they were waiting for other games down the line.
I would have had Derry and Galway down as a close game (smaller attendance than what was in Killarney) but I guess supporters of both counties would have thought that they would surely still be in the top 3 of the group (no offence to Westmeath) at the end. Led to an attendance of under 8k.
The GAA have got this wrong, too many teams in Sam Maguire. Probably should be 3 tiers. 12 (with 8 qualifying for QF's) a Sam Maguire competition. 4 groups of 3 (1 home and 1 away game), top 2 qualify where a 1st placed team vs a 2nd placed team in QF's. 4 provincial champions, last years Tailteann Cup winners and next best 7 ranked teams from the league. That would be your 12.
Another 12 (next best 12 ranked from league) in the Tailteann Cup and the remainder in a 3rd tier competition as we saw what happened to Waterford vs Kildare yesterday and thats just one example.
There's a big gap between the top ranked sides in these competitions and the bottom ranked sides and it leads to people not interested in the games.

Padraig Joyce reckons Comer could be out for a bit after that stamp. Hope that's reflected in McKinless' punishment. Should get the season off for that.
Of course Mickey Harte just says it was never a free in the first place but he didn't see the stamp.. Yeah, right, Mickey, same old sh*te from you and your teams.

To be fair I felt they were a once in a generation team. I argued on here that I saw no replacements for the stars once they left the stage. But I was wrong. They are in a D1 final with a lot of new faces tomorrow. They had effectively 2 down years and those down years consisted of them being a kick of a ball away from winning. Dublin are effectively a province at this stage. They have the infrastructure and numbers equivalent to Leinster rugby. The fact that Croke Park was given to them as a defecto home ground meant they could turn their attention to matters on the field solely. Two development centres of excellence are pending planning. Hollystown golf club about 5k from my club in Meath. & The spawell on the southside. A centre of excellence on both sides of the liffey. If anyone thinks that any county will compete with this they are wrong. The league game might have been brushed off by some on here but what it signified to me was an experimental Dublin team gave a near full Kerry team a hiding. If your warning lights aren't on I'm not sure what your looking at. I'm afraid I have become equally pessimistic about Kerry's chances. I'm genuinely and generally a positive person and for years I have been hoping and believing Kerry would get back on top and be the Kingdom once again. Realistically though we haven't won enough since most of the 2009 Kerry team retired. We have some very good players, but I think we all know that we scraped past Mayo in 2014 and were very lucky to beat Donegal in the final. In 2022 we actually did play some great football in the semi against Dublin and in the final against Galway. In both games we relied heavily on some Kerry stars. So there we are currently: we have some of the biggest stars in football in the team, but if we're honest not the best squad in Ireland. Like our minor and U20 teams we have become a team with a soft touch, you can bully Kerry into submission. Cork have gotten close to Kerry a few times, and to be honest we all know this isn't the best Cork football they ever produced. Even Clare bullied us at times. Against Monaghan in the second half yesterday we were found wanting once again. When I moved to Dublin in 2001 there was very little football or hurling in the city. I was involved with the scouts and with Ballyboden St Enda's, but none of my scouts played gaelic games. They all played soccer or rugby and supported likewise. I was seen as an oddity for not wanting to see the Man U games, or the Leinster games, but would take the bus to the northside instead to watch a game in Croke Park. Every game I could see in Croke Park I would, whether it was hurling, ladies football, camogie or football, and whether it was junior, senior, or intermediate grade. I used to go around the county and visit club games all the time. While some people in Dublin had a real passion for GAA, the majority of people did not. And then the GAA acted upon it. I saw coaches being introduced at all levels, new pitches being developed, huge money into the gaelic games at all levels. The facilities in Ballyboden are unrecognisable when compared to 25 years ago and almost all clubs in Dublin have seen similar investments. More people are sending to children to play gaelic games, more schools are offering it, it is everywhere. With the first wave of Dublin success it became cool to play gaelic games in the capital, and gaelic players are very much as big stars as the soccer players in England. I used to ask people to name a few Dublin players, but most would not get past Jayo or Whelo. Now every Dublin kid can name at least half the squad. Former players have gone on to become coaches and the Dublin machine is performing well from the grassroots up. No other county has so much revenue at its disposal, so many resources, so many players, so many supporters and so on. According to the last census records Dublin now has a population 1,6 million, compared to almost 160,000 for Kerry. While in Kerry some smaller clubs struggle to find 15 lads to tog out every game, there are so many clubs in Dublin that the county championship goes down to Junior D. That's 6 divisions of the county championship with some of the largest clubs in the country, and some fielding several teams every weekend. According to The Irish Times, Ballyboden is "almost certainly... the biggest sports club in Europe", with 172 teams representing it in 2020. sourceThe question is how can any county in Ireland compete? When do we say this funding spree has worked well and has become a major cash cow for the GAA, but it is not good for the game? The GAA would not be able to have so many top class stadiums, invest heavily in Thurles and Cork, and so many first class facilities all around Ireland without Dublin generating a lot of money. While Dublin get a lot of money, they are also the main generator for revenue. With all that in mind I really hope Kerry will get to a final, but I can't see beyond Dublin for another title.

Its been asked already - but why oh why can't the fixtures people announce venues, dates and times for games where both sides are known.
People are expected to keep entire weekends free which is ridiculous and insulting to families in particular - still no confirmation of details for R2 or R3 on the GAA website.
Keep it up guys - and then ye can form a committee of "experts" to try and figure out why attendances for games are falling through the floor. I can take the simple way out and plan my weekend fitting in whatever sport I want on TV (or radio) with the added advantage of being able to channel hop if the game turns out to be boring, one sided and all for a fraction of the cost of going to the game because I didn't know in time when or where it was on.
