With the league nearly over the teams for the 2023 senior Championship are becoming a little clearer.
The top 14 ranked teams are now known (1 and 2 may switch depending on final result, likewise for D2 final) and we also know Westmeath (Tailteann winners in 2022) plus one of London/Sligo/NY/Leitrim (who ever makes the Connaught final from that side of the draw) are in the mix. The teams watching for other division 3 & 4 sides making their provincial final and claiming a place will be Meath and Kildare as they will then lose out.
Rankings 1, 2 Mayo/Galway 3 Roscommon 4 Tyrone 5 Kerry 6 Monaghan 7, 8 Derry/Dublin 9 Armagh 10 Donegal 11 Louth 12 Cork 13 Kildare 14 Meath Westmeath (will be ranked 9th after provincial winners and runners up before league positions come into play) Connaught finalist (will be ranked 5-8) Mayo/Galway and Rosc all on one side of connaught draw
Provincial winners will be ranked 1 in each group, Provincial runners up ranked 2 and then the league positions come into play
This also means that two of Mayo, Galway and Roscommon will be "third seeds" come the draw for championship groups with Derry being a potential 4th seed if they don't make the Ulster final.

Meath will seriously be watching the Clare v Cork Game in 2 weeks time. A Clare win ensures 1 division 3 team will definitely be in the Munster Final and Meath in Tailteann cup barring a Leinster Final appearance themselves.

Meath are on the opposite side of the draw to Dublin and Kildare. If they don't get to the Leinster final they'd be better off in the Tailteann Cup anyway.

There's a lot at stake in the Munster Final - Win and you're top seed with Sligo likely as 2nd seed. Lose and you're 2nd seed with the Connaught Champions 1st seed.
Lose Munster Final and hardest potential group of: Galway Kerry Tyrone Derry
Win Munster Final and easiest potential group of: Kerry Sligo Westmeath Louth
Although the latter would be more of a disaster, you want 1 or 2 big guns in your group.

If Kerry were on form group 1 would be very exciting albeit 3 qualify anyway.

Ah look e en if we fell to Cork the chances of being in a group with the likes of Galway Tyrone and Derry are fairly slim. Derry probably wont get lower than a 3rd seed team. There could be a much weaker team in the group. Winning the round robin group will be important as the preliminary quarter finals are the weekend after the round 3 group matches. The group winners get a 2-week break to the quarter finals. Teams finishing second and third in the group will be playing 4 weekends in a row if they make the quarter final.

The Master Fixture Schedule Booklet for 2023 makes no reference to this and it seems to have all the other regulations in terms of how the competition will operate. The Booklet says that There is no mention anywhere of Munster winner and Connacht loser being in the same group or any similar sort of arrangement. My reading of things is that if Kerry win Munster they will be a 1st seed. Any of the non-Munster provincial losers can end up in the group with Kerry as 2nd seed. The only ones that can't be in the group as the 2nd seed with Kerry are the Munster provincial losers.

Teams finishing second and third in the group will be playing 4 weekends in a row if they make the quarter final. True but winning the group could be a big ask but qualifying should be easy. 3 out of 4 teams is too many to qualify. A team could lose two games and draw the 3rd game and still qualify. I think the reason for 3 teams to go through was that if it was the case that only 2 were going forward out of the group stages it would increase the risk of dead rubbers by quite a bit. The thing is if a team loses 2 games and draws the 3rd all the qualificiation would get them is a game against a 2nd place qualifier from one of the other groups a week later, so it's not exactly all that much in the way of a reward. I wouldn't give a team that have only picked up 1 point from 3 games much chance in terms of going on to beat a team that finished 2nd in another group a week later. The 1st seed will have the following schedule of games. Home versus 3rd seed Away versus 4th seed Neutral venue versus 2nd seed The 2nd seed will have the following schedule of games. Home versus 4th seed Away versus 3rd seed Neutral venue versus 1st seed The 3rd seed will have the following schedule of games. Away versus 1st seed Home versus 2nd seed Neutral venue versus 4th seed The 4th seed will have the following schedule of games. Away versus 2nd seed Home versus 1st seed Neutral venue versus 3rd seed I think when the draw and fixtures for the group stages are made there is a serious chance that it will look like a mistake that the 4 provincial losers got the 2nd seed. I'll be very surprised if the 4 teams who are the 3rd seeds don't end up as a good bit stronger than the the 4 teams who end up as 2nd seeds.

I would say it's far likelier that the bit on the Calendar should just read Munster and Connacht winners as opposed to finalists and whoever made the calendar just made a mistake. I downloaded both the GAA Master Fixture Plan for 2023 and the GAA Master Fixture Schedule Booklet 2023 from GAA.ie on the same day back in December.

Quick question lads,
With young kids and living up on Meath it's been far harder to get to games than it used to be.
If you were to pick a game in Killarney having not had a visit since Covid what would it be ?
V Cork in Munster V TBC in All Ireland group.
Personally I think Cork will be the toughest test we have had from them in a few years and the atmosphere that might bring.
Any thoughts ?

Oh def. Cork. Although they did not gain promotion, they hsv e significantly improved and after years of being overlooked - they have eventually got the right man in charge who will get the best out of the players available.
Everyone spouts, ah five minors in a row, but for at least two of those years, we robbed Cork or got out if jail.
I can see a very much improved Cork take the field against us, we may be aiming to peak further down the line, whereas, Cork may be tailoring their efforts to get a Munster Scalp. Could be an interesting game

I believe that will be made after the provincial semis. If we win Munster, our first round robin game will be a home tie against a number 3 seed on the weekend of May 20/21. As they are on the same side of the Connacht draw, two of Galway, Mayo and Roscommon will be seeded 3. Tyrone, Monaghan and Derry are on the one side of the draw in Ulster. In all likelihood, two of those three will make up the other two number 3 seeds. Good chance of a juicy home tie, provided we win Munster of course.

All of Rossies Galway and Mayo are on top 6 teams so surely they can't be rated below 1st and 2 nd seeds The number 1 and 2 seeds will be the 8 provincial finalists. After that it goes on league position.

Yeah, the league finished with a 1, 2, 3 of Mayo, Galway, Roscommon, so the 2 of those that don't make the Connaught final will be 3rd seeds. Westmeath will be 3rd seeds for winning the Tailteann Cup.

I've seen reference made that they will the 9th seed which would make them 3rd seeds but I've also seen that they will replace the 16th seed and thereby be a 4th seed? Its all a bit unclear.

Westmeath are currently in the 4th seed spot. If they get to the Leinster finals they will move up to either 1st seed (if they win) or 2nd seed (if they lose). There is no way they can be 3rd seed. If Westmeath do move up to take one of the two provincial seed places then that means the 8th best team on the basis of the league results( after the 8 provincial teams) will be included. If Westmeath don't move up to take one of the provincial spots, then only 7 teams based on league places will be included.

Over the years I have definitely seen information on the GAA.ie site that wasn't correct. On this page the item called GAA Master Fixtures Schedule has the year 2022 in one place and it's titled GAA Master Fixtures Schedule 2023 when you open it/scroll down. This document has all the rules in relation to all the various competitions for the year. I've posted all the rules for the Senior Championship below. If there were to be a rotating schedule of provincial winner verusus provincial loser in the format Munster winner versus Connacht loser, they would surely be included here. For the U20 Football Championship for example on page 28 it does makes reference to a similar situation where there is an annual rotating provincial structure for the semi-finals it says It also has details for similar provincial rotating structures for the three levels of club championship semi-finals in both hurling and football Also I checked the GAA Master Fixtures Schedule for 2022 and that had the following in relation to the provincial rotation of the semi-final fixtures for the All-Ireland Senior Football. In addition I followed the debate about the restructuring fairly closely as it went on and I don't remember hearing anything in relation to keeping a provincial winner v provincial loser rotating structure. If anything there was a feeling that anything outside the provincial competitions shouldn't have any geographical restrictions like the north/south split that was there in the league during Covid. I'm convinced there will be no provincial rotation of winner v loser under the new structure. www.gaa.ie/stories/gaa-master-fixtures-for-2023-published/

Any mistakes would be edited by now.
Connacht and Munster finals are set for Sunday May 7th with two week break given to the four finalists to prepare for their round 1 group game on May 20th/21
Leinster and Ulster finals are set Sunday May 14th again a two week break given to the four finalists to prepare for their round 1 group game on May 27th/28th
On rotating that's what I expect to happen with the groups.

Can anyone see the Rossies stunning the newly crowned league champions? I think Mayo are a different animal this year, however in saying that, if we came up against them, I still would have no fear.
I think this is tailor made for an ambush. New York too may really fancy their chance against Leitrim.
Is their many Kerry lads with New York and London this year, Strand Road's Gavin O'Brien is a great addition to NY, it will be interesting to see how he fairs with them.

Rossies are still a bit light around the girth and it will be interesting to see how far their pipeline can project them forward - talent is sporadic and only time will tell if they have a vintage crop. The end of Cavan Fermanagh was entertaining but the problem is that emerging teams get opened up by, well teams that have already emerged. Dublin for me will be interesting as they weather a backward wave - can they stem the tide? Some might say they should make a clean fist of it and in this vein has Farrell the wherewithal to do what Cody did, what Harte, Dwyer, etc failed to do - exhuming Clux suggests he hasn't but then again Clux might be just what they need. Rochford is a dark horse and so Mayo shouldn't struggle in that department, unless 'too many cooks' of course. Id Galway in '22 AI final wasn't a flash in the pan I think the team that beats them gets to tuck in Sammy, and they will have come on for it.

I think Mayo look a really good side.
They don't have a Con/Walsh or Clifford but the look like they have great depth and balance in the team.
Their game against us last year was marked by their usual failings. I don't see that now they have a range of good forwards and lads to come off the bench.
They gave up some goal chances that on other days will go in.
There is nothing between Mayo, Galway,Dublin and Kerry with Tyrone if their tuned in.
Let's hope Kerry are priming for the championship and we see the real Kerry in 4 weeks.
