Who captained the Kerry Minors and was unable to get his place the following year, though still underage? Ah I know this makes it easier, if more of a trivia - he had lifted the Tommy Markam? Ballydonoghue's Robert Bunyan? 10/10, but was that an educated guess given you may know where I hail from? I only unearthed it for myself lately, a passing comment - and he'd have played well throughout '75? And 'twas a goal I scored the previous year that got the ball rolling so to speak, that had him captain. Jazus but I'm really famous and now I'll be blamed for not doing it the year after again - and it was local Butcher Boy who is no more, well no more e Butcher Boy anyway, who, well rolled the ball to me in the first place. Another sad day for rural Ireland when Lisselton's own said Butcher Boy closed his door for the last time. The only sadder day was the day after with all the hangovers though the stories took some washing down, even the rare true wans alone. The only mystery now is who was the last customer but nobody remembers, suffice as to say I left before The Soldier's Song.

Ballydonoghue's Robert Bunyan? Apparently Terrace Talk says this is all rubbish and that he played on the '76 team defeated in the Munster Final. I'll have to get another witness statement from the Constable who made the original report under oath - this officer doesn't normally mislead the jury and wasn't under undue influence when interviewed, as opposed to due influence? We'll have to set the record straight, moreover as I have skin in the game here myself.

I can only think of one off the top of my head but a player from another county who won an All-Ireland with Kerry. Can anyone think of any?

What about Danno O'Keeffe? I think he was a Cork man - possibly Millstreet.

Wasn't Weeshie a Corkman though it's debateable as to whether he ever played for us, or didn't - it would lie to say there wasn't times when he was our 16th man? He was such a character I found it hard enough to believe when I first heard he was of Rebel blood. In the above Garda vein, Michael Murphy's old man is of Mayo and there was a notorious Kerryman who's name escapes me on this morn after the night before, and who was a key star in Donegal club football a while of years back. Of course Ballydonoghue's Jack Kissane won with Galway - The 1956 All Ireland finalThe pic demonstrates the hallmarks of a son of the tough skin that hail from the sunny side of Cnoc an Óir, hill of golden harvest though some think it's root meaning is 'hill of slaughter' and given the genetic prowess you could argue either way, once of course you knew where you are arguing and who with! Army corporal Jack was of the townland of Kilomeauroe and which incidentally is root of that Paris cosmetic Kilomeauroe De Toilette. Apparently it is an anti ageing cream and didn't I have an experience myself of a day with a 'second father' kind of old friend of mine that was the late Kilomeauroe's Liam Bambury. His sallow skin and other features had a few of us in the local convince a band of nosy visitors that he was Mick O'Dwyers brother. Anyway, look, for all the wans out there who feel the years creeping up and want to paint the front of their house, the authentic version of this medicine is a slpash of bog water after a day in the bog, so now ladies, get out yer sleáns - you can se him spittin' on their tender hands as the sods start flying, and probably in my direction after this!

Thr player I have in mind Niall Fleming from Ballydesmond who won a junior All-Ireland in 2006 with Kerry.
I would say there's probably a few from out that way who would have won Vocational School All-Irelands in the past.
On the subject of Niall Fleming. How did it actually come about him playing with Kerry does anyone know?

How did it actually come about him playing with Kerry does anyone know? Niall Fleming is from Kerry. Part of Ballydesmond is in Kerry and part is in Cork. Ballydesmond have an arrangement where those from the Cork side of Ballydesmond play with Cork and those from the Kerry side play with Kerry. Niall Fleming ended up marking a club teammate in a Cork-Kerry Junior match in 2006. More about it at: www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-20007019.htmlDan O'Keeffe, the previous record holder of most All-Irelands for many decades with 7, was born in Fermoy and moved to Kerry when he was 9. Ger Power was born in Limerick but moved to Kerry as a baby.

I think the wan 'n' only Diarmaid Ferriter put me right on this of a day at The Glenties Summer school but back to a local man for confirmation. Are the the wan clan?

Did Pa Laide's dad, Mick win an all ireland with Kerry, I know he won one with Galway? Don't think so. You are correct about his win with Galway though. A good few Kerrymen won all Irelands with Dublin but have nt heard about outsiders winning with us. Don't think he won one with Galway but definitely played in a final with them

If my memory serves me correctly, I don't remember Gooch playing any part of the Championship 2014 and wasn't listed as a sub in the Final. But I believe that he was given a medal. He was tagged off and ready to play that day. Back then, you didn't have to be named to make the panel Another jigsaw piece - As someone with 2 skins in this game, i.e. either result could have had me skinned alive - anyway I believe Colm was a kind of an unofficial helper to Éamonn and I specifically recall the commentator thinking likewise - Gooch was on the side line as the late substitutions were made and I think he was also 'chatting' with players. Fond memories, and I lived to tell the tale, skin intact!

Re penalties in Canal end /Dávin stand end. We have had much luck with penalties in big games into the canal end over the years. I think Dara Ó Cinnéide scored one v Armagh in 2000 semi but can anyone remember any others we scored in that goal over the years. Seanie missed one last year. Paul Geaney in the 19 final. Jacko Shea hit the crossbar in 86 v Tyrone. Mikey Sheehy missed in 82 v Offaly. I remember Mikey scoring in 79 into the Hill as did Jacko in 85 but we have nt had much luck into the other end. Anyone remember goals we scored from penalties in canal end? We have a poor record in penalties in Croke park in general and seem to miss a lot more than we score. I hope it is something we are practising in training this year as I would be fearful if we went to a penalty shootout. To answer your question I remember Darran O'Sullivan scoring a penalty on a wet day (possibly against Meath in the 2009 semi final) where he slipped and the ball literally trickled over the line. I can't recall into which goal it was, however.

Something I was wondering recently. Are Castleisland ie the club Castleisland Desmonds the only one to won a provisional and All-Ireland club title without having won a county SFC?
Castleisland won a title in the 50s but I'm pretty sure that was a divisional team rather than a club. Similar to the Dingle team in the 30s/40s.

Yes, I think so.... similar to Brosna winning County, Munster and All Ireland Junior and although not linked, never winning the local North Kerry Championship.

The A-I Junior competition is obviously just for Junior teams, while the East and North Kerry Championship is for clubs of all grades. Castleisland won the All-Ireland competition for senior teams without winning their own County's competition for senior teams.

Ah ya, I know, that's why I stated not linked... Desmonds were unlucky in 1991, they just came up against a serious outfit in Crokes who went on to win the all Ireland 6 months later. ..

Have Na Gaeil won the longest named competition in Ireland - the "St Brendan's Board/Tralee District Board Joint CCC Senior Championship"? It's only been in existence a couple of years.

I would guess that no county has had more of their players play for other counties than Kerry. I could be wrong but we have players represent London New York Cork Limerick Tipp Clare Roscommon Laois Kildare and Dublin. That's 10 county gaa teams beside our own. Can you name the players and counties or name more? Or name others from other counties like Kildare have had Tompkins and Fahy play with Cork etc. Has anyone more than Kerry? Pat Spillane, Sligo

Jack Flavin of Moyvane has a unique record - he played for Kerry in the 1937 championship & won an All Ireland medal when Kerry beat Galway - the following year he transferred to Galway as he worked there & won an All Ireland with them beating Kerry in the final!!

Transfers in the GAA context is most interesting. Gardai and bankers generally didn't work near home and which had to do with arresting or counting their friends' money respectively, and so they had to move and so transferred clubs. Army personnel would be another one though unlike the former, that remains, i.e. Army Barracks don't move.
Globalisation is the driver these days, top jobs in big corporations in big centres of population. Even South Kerry empties into Killarney though laddos mightn't transfer as the distance wouldn't be as big. I've even seen it is Ballydonoghue with fellas gravitating towards neighbouring towns.
Travel is easier theses days so the distance should be less of an issue - with alkl the bypasses you'd get to Dublin from Listowel in 3 hours.
It is al part of gradually conceding our identity - there was a time when a Ballydonoghoor would skin a townie alive whereas now they jump ship, traitors to the cause you might say?
Provincial finals are in a similar vein and if they go then the GAA would be throwing away that local rivalry magic - Munster Finals are legendary, Killarney or Thurles.

I NY or London would be involved. Is it Jamie Clarke (Armagh)? Yes, it does involve London or NY but not both. Not Jamie Clarke, well at least he's not the person I had in mind, wouldn't be as well known as Jamie.

Mike Crowley (Kerry) played with Limerick. James Ó Shea (Kerry) played with Cork. Conor Jordan (Clare) Teddy Doyle (Tipp) Karl Ó Dwyer (Kildare) Brian Murphy (former Kerry minor Goalie played for Dublin) Billy Sheehan (Laois) and I know a Kerryman captained to Dublin to an all Ireland title many decades ago. I'm sure there are other Kerrymen that represented other counties. James O'Shea also played for Cork after transferring from his South Kerry club... think he was Foilmore?
