The last quarter final was played this morning. Desmonds 3.23 Knocknagoshel 0.07 Semi Finals Ballyduff Vs St.Senans Desmonds Vs Brosna Desmonds have put up big scores in this competition so far against Moyvane and Knocknagoshel. Probably the team to beat at this stage. It's nice to see North Kerry board doing their bit for climate change, taking the Castleisland Desmonds v Brosna game to Tarbert next weekend. Could they have got a venue further away from both clubs???

Where is the Ballyduff/St. Senans match being played? Brosna I suppose! Has any match in this year’s championship been played in Listowel? Too central , to much convenient parking. That would never do.

According to google maps, Brosna is 40km to Tarbert and Castleisland is 51km. Surely Listowel would be the logical decision?
Great reports btw. they make for great reading!

Some clubs do not make their grounds available for games so perhaps they have no choice. Most clubs have exited the championship at this stage and might not welcome a game on their pitch at this time of year. As for Listowel, they havent always had the best relationship with the NK Board in the past.

Semi final grounds invariably don't get the final. Pitch wise for location and parking you won't get better than Moyvane but their pitch isn't to standard at the moment.
The best pitch surface and for adequate parking st the moment I'd be leaning very much towards Duagh. The grass there is so lush and in great underfoot condition.

100km+ round trips is ridiculous and things like this can only lead to issues down the line as people lose confidence in decision making.
Or maybe it is to keep the numbers down?
BTW how is the gate money split? Are clubs obliged to make a pitch available? Was Bally' not an option?

Moyvane is not the worst venue but surely you are not saying that location wise and parking wise it is superior to Listowel. I get the impression that various members of the Board plug their own patch and return to their “constituents” boasting like politicians , look I am after getting such and such a game. To hell with the players and supporters. Let the supporters park in the outback while with our car passes we can drive into the foyer. Very often for a final all the traffic is going in one direction, resulting in nightmare congestion and long walks . Long walks in North Kerry football weather isn’t good for the soul. In contrast, the major games in the other divisions usually seem to be staged in their premier stadia. I suppose one could respond by saying that people still flock to the games. I wonder will that still obtain when old fools like myself move on. Younger folk may not be so compliant. Goodwill could evaporate. I agree incidentally that Duagh is a good location for certain matches but not ,for instance , for Beale V Tarbert which on known form the NKB could in all likelihood bring there. In summary, I wish the NKB would display some common sense and courtesy and consideration towards players and supporters rather than in engaging in parish pump football politics.

I don't recall Listowel hosting any game this year, is it possible that it is being kept for the final?

Veteran, no of course Moyvane is not better than Listowel but it has a lot of facilities that other venues don't have. Mainly main road, church and the local hall yard parking but like I alluded to my personal favourite is Duagh for surface and parking, Coollard has one of the finest playing surfaces, new buildings etc but couldn't safely cater for parking. Tarbert too would struggle.
Invariably Bally gets the gig but its hard to balance the comfy walking shoes with the long distance parking with the warm waterproof boots needed for the trudge to the "far side".
For me it's looking like a Castleisland and Senans final. Weather permitting then for me it's either Listowel or Duagh with Duagh being my preferred choice.
Have you strongly agree with you on the politics, it looks to me like some club delegates would have more emphasis on hosting a major game than their senior XV actually playing in it.

So one semi in Tarbert and the other in ballylongford on sat. The venues have being "spread" around randamoly for God knows why in the past few years. I don't think clubs get any of the gate except maybe a few quid from the final. Last weeks game ballyD v senans could have been a classic but the ref lost control after the 1st minor scuffle. He got no help from the sideline official. It was faracial stuff. That aside it was a tight tense affair and although senans dominated the 1st 10mins the opportunist goals from ballyD turned it in their favour. It just looked like they would grind it out but to be fair senans were better for large spells and when they finally got the breaks (a few cards) they got a deserved win. A week after that game to be ready for ballyduff is going to make it a very tight affair I think. A strong ref needed. Certainly Desmond look the part but I think Brosna will bring one last surge. Outsiders bet. Funnily I can't see either Bduff or brosna winning it out. I reckon the final will be in duagh regardless of the teams in it. Listowel have not had a game in ages. Funny that the draw takes place in the clubhouse and a listowel man involved in all of them. Hard one to figure.

I think the NK board are doing a cracking job of keeping everything a state secret. They have no problem have 3 lads at the gate with the paw out , which is fine but please advertise the games. Let us adult's decide if its safe to attend. Surely there is someone who could update their page. Looking fwd to the report. Even though I'll probably be at the game I feel like I missed half ot reading your reports.

Out of interest, are all pitches up to then mark these days - all well drained and level, playable 12 months of the year?
God be with the days when Ballybunion was the only winter park - sandy surface so dry as a cork!

Surely duagh are due it, especially the way the remaining teams are spread out. The outgoing chair is showing them who is boss.

I realise that very likely I am flogging a dead horse at this stage but it is unbelievable that no North Kerry championship has been staged this year in the centre with the best facilities . Would it happen in any sport in any other area in the country?
Nothing for it now I suppose for us mugs than to go slipping and sliding on Ballylongford’s version of the grassy knoll . Let us hope all the snipers will be inside the wire!

That said listowel is out of favour at the moment. They are known for being very precious about their field though and don't like turning on the lights for anyone it appears. Duaghs grassy knoll is a bit dodgy this time of year too so maybe that's why moyvane gets the nod for the final. Word of mouth appears to be the only way to get info these days.

Being abroad for so long, I've lost contact with the more local idiosyncrasies of Kerry football. I enjoy this thread and it gives me an annual winter tour of North Kerry. Southward's post was the icing on the cake this year. We need more North Kerrymen on the Kerry team.

Ballyduff 2-8 St. Senans 1-8 HT 1-5 0-4
Only one score in it at the end but I felt Ballyduff were never in danger of losing this one. The crowd was sparse enough but luckily I got a space in the stand, avoiding the pitfalls of the infamous grassy knoll. The day was typical December dreariness, constant drizzle but happily mild enough. The playing surface was understandably heavy with the grass looking as if it could gave benefitted from a week's grazing by a hungry flock of sheep. No day for fancy football but rather long and direct. St. Senans, for the most part, played as if it was a sunny June afternoon whereas Ballyduff were alive to the inclement conditions and played accordingly. That stagecraft is instilled into the boys from the Cashen just as they are about discard their nappies.
In the early stages St. Senans had a lot of the play mainly through the efforts of Barry O'Mahony and Cillian Trant at midfield. However, their build up was too ponderous, involving too many risky hand passes. The playing conditions and the defensive play of lads like Kyle O'Connr, excellent for most of the game, and Padraig Walsh stymied most of their incursions. Conversely, Ballyduff usually looked for the long, economical kick pass. Smart play with a bar of soap for a ball, complemented by having slick offensive boys like Podge Boyle, Kevin Goulding and of course Ballyduff's own Shaman, Mikey Boyle. Some points were exchanged in that opening half, not too many mind you, but a goal was secured which probably was the turning point of the game. A long ball was delivered in between Mikey and Sean T. Dillon, Mikey out in front which he feels is his right. Sean T got a flailing hand to it but only knocked it into the grateful arms of the in rushing Kevin Goulding. Kevin made a few yards and crashed it home. One had a sinking feeling for St. Senans at that stage. Four down at the break is not an unassailable lead to claw back but one felt it would have been easier for them to climb Stack's mountain.
Senans needed to get moving early on the resumption and as far as I can recall they did get the opening score. But then they walked into a Mike Tyson body shot. Twinkle toes,Kevin Goulding, won possession out in the right corner, did a hop, step and jump past futile tackles. Goal number two for this accomplished operator. He scored 2-2 from play and perhaps three from frees. Marvellous scoring in December conditions. Climbing Stack's mountain now became a trek up the McGillicuddy Reeks. Not advisable even in optimal climatic conditions. The Halfway boys did keep battling, naively too often, but for once they did go direct and were rewarded. As the song goes, a lesson too late for the learning. In any case the long ball reached the right man, Sean O'Connell . Sean is not as nimble as of yore but yet, playing from memory, he scored a fine goal. He kicked 1-2 from play. Try as they might , St. Senans could not get closer than that one goal deficit. That achievement by Ballyduff is all the more meritorious when one considers they played the last ten/fifteen with fourteen men. Paul O'Carroll got a second yellow for a high, dangerous tackle on Barry O'Mahony.
One incident late in the game epitomised the trend of the game, epitomised the heart of Ballyduff and above all it epitomised the spirit of Mikey Boyle. A ball bounced about thirty yards or so from the St. Senans goal. Up to three Senan players were loitering around the scene and it was an obviously easy possession for one of them. Should have been but wouldn't you know the aforementioned Shaman, Mikey, swept in on the blindside from nowhere. He claimed it, was fouled and then raised his fist to the Ballyduff supporters in the stand. They responded as one to their favourite warrior. Game, set and match to the irrepressible Duffers.
After a slow start Eoin Ross and Jack O'Sullivan, got a fine point, edged the midfield battle against Barry O'Mahony, he too got a fine point, and Cillian Trant. Barry was nowhere near as effective as against Ballydonoghue. He was inclined to take too much out of the ball, a malady which befell too many of his colleagues. Cillian was probably the best midfielder in the first half but seemed to tire in the second , carelessly losing a lot of ball. I get the impression he still is not strong enough for these rugged encounters particularly in the winter. Should improve with gym work.
Very likely Ballyduff will go into the final as underdogs, particularly if it is against Castleisland. That's the way they like it. Particularly Mikey. On the way out a Ballyduff supporter tod me Mikey has been living for the past couple of months in Tir na nOg on a diet of milk and honey. Surely that contravenes the rules!
P.S. Unable to go to Knocknagoshel tomorrow. Perhaps somebody else will throw up a report.
