Ballyduff 4-08 Tarbert 1-10 Brosna 2-12 Duagh 1-09 Finuge 0-07 St Senans 0-12 Moyvane 0-04 Castleisland Desmonds 5-18 Jays horse judging by the score lines, none of those games looked like classics, does the NKC take a while to get going? 🤔 A few clubs still sliding downhill by the looks of it. Moyvane taking a fierce hiding there. What's the story with Duagh, Tarbert, Finuge ? Heard a good few times that player power is a major problem in two of those mentioned.

Jays horse judging by the score lines, none of those games looked like classics, does the NKC take a while to get going? 🤔 A few clubs still sliding downhill by the looks of it. Moyvane taking a fierce hiding there. What's the story with Duagh, Tarbert, Finuge ? Heard a good few times that player power is a major problem in two of those mentioned. Tarbert for me have always under achieved, compared to other NK clubs I always felt they had the most potential. Duagh were at their peak few years back when Maher, Quirke and Griffin were in their prime, unfortunately these pillars have no conveyer belt to back up, similar with Finuge, the last day both Corridens were mid field, fine players but Mid field is no place for mileage in the legs. Moyvane have been on the slide with a bit but the returning Stacke may make a difference. Basically it's down to underage numbers, all the above have been forced to amalgamate at various underage levels. Tarbert joined Moyvane, Knock/Brosna joined Duagh, similar with Finuge. Hopefully remote working and returning students may improve population and enhance roots.. but basically it's a numbers game, underage players need to be competing at in competitions not fulfilling fixtures. As for player power, some are living off past glories, others are stuck in ruts or just what I quote as "resistance to change" .. often outsider's opinions are considered alien to "the way things are done"

This thread is titled "2021 Bernard O'Callaghan North Kerry Championship".
Back on topic please...posts off-topic will be deleted, and I have deleted a few on this page that are not worthy of inclusion on any forum, let alone a Kerry GAA forum.

Close game in Moyvane today. Game was played on Ballyduff's terms in the first half. They successfully isolated Mikey Boyle close to the Listowel goal and went in at half time 2 goals to the good. In the second half Listowel got a lot more ball but at the water break both teams had only added a point to their tally. Listowel kicked several wides in this period facing into a blinding sun. Ballyduff looked in control after the water break but Listowel successfully turned over the Ballyduff goalkeeper and reduced the deficit to a goal. Listowel used the momentum to reduce the gap to the minimum but we're wasteful with their final chances. Ballyduff through to the semi final and if they play like they did in the first half for an entire game they will be dangerous.

Congratulations to Castleisland today. The score line suggests a one sided game.

Ya Castleisland are a good team, well trilled, very physical and have options in most positions, they have a few in or around the forty five man county extended panel, I also think they will build on their success of today, in the current competition they are due to meet Knocknagoshel in the quarter final with the winners taking on yesterday’s winners Brosna.
On the other side Ballyduff won yesterday and will play the winners of Ballydonoghue and Senans, where some think Bally will regroup after today, I think St Senans will pip them and line up a semi with the Boyle’s and co.

Senans took Bally in extra time, I had a sneaky feeling the mountcoal boys were waiting in the long grass, they would have been aiming for 3 in a row last year bar injuries to key players.
Senans 1-14 B'donoghue 3-05.
I envisage Desmonds will keep their run going tomorrow to take the final Semi Final place

St. Senans 1-14 Ballydonoghue 3-5 AET. Score in normal time 0-11 2-5. HT in normal time 0-6 2-2
These maybe only approximate scores but you can take it as gospel that St. Senans won. The reason for the apologia regarding the precise scores is twofold. First of all my poor fingers were numb and therefore I found it hard to write on the flimsy programme. Secondly, things were happening so fast and furiously that my brain was having problems registering everything that transpired. This was a hundred miles from being a classic but it was epic. Goals scored, goals disallowed, some great scores, reckless tackling, far too much niggle and cards of every colour. It also featured an incident which may be unprecedented. The referee did his best but his task was mountainous.
Where do I begin. At the beginning you might say but I can't. I arrived in Finuge at 2.20pm for a game which I thought was scheduled to start at 2.30pm. To my dismay, the game was on for about twenty minutes when I sought my vantage point. That upset my equilibrium greatly but the show must go on.
On my arrival, the score was 0-4 to 0-0 in favour of St. Senans. I presume it had nothing to do with my entrance, but the match then swung dramatically in favour of the Bally boys. Tommy Kennelly put over a forty five. Then a ball came through to Paul Kennelly , one on one with Sean Weir. Danger here, as George Hamilton might say. Danger here indeed. Paul effortlessly rounded Sean and the green flag went up. Not too long afterwards, Jack Kennelly shot low but without too much power but unfortunately for James Barry it deceived him. Goal number two in the blink of an eyelid. The remainder of the half was forgettable. Macho stuff off and on the on the ball, a lot of the sneaky variety, with little continuity. Bally two up at the break.
The second was a little less fractious, but only marginally. Tommy Kennelly at RHB kicked two points from play in the second half and a forty five. He had a fine game, took some heavy knocks. gave a few as well, but seemed to run out of steam, as indeed did a lot of the Bally lads did. By way of contrast, it was evident that lads from the Halfway were not running out of steam or out of enthusiasm although it looked for a while that they would run out of luck. A high ball came in which Paudie Quille got a hand to and finished in the net. St. Senans back in the hunt but the goal was disallowed due to square ball? Still they battled incessantly. Ronan Kerins kicked two mighty ones form play as did Sean O'Connell. Bally donoghue were clinging on. A lot of their players were going down with injuries, some real and some imaginary. Still the boys from the Halfway kept coming back for more and it appeared that their heroic endeavours would be rewarded only to be thwarted by a bizarre incident. Another high one was delivered and this time Cillian Trant, outstanding from start to finish, got the vital touch. Green flag goes up and there appeared to be no illegality on this occasion. Score goes on the scoreboard. The Halfway supporters go berserk and, seemingly, the Bally supporters resign themselves to a two point defeat. What ensued was of the believe it or not category. And it went on and on and on, with nobody sure what was happening. What we did see was the the Ballydonoghue players surrounding ref and umpires. And finally, it became apparent that this goal too was being disallowed. GUBU land revisited. Remember the green flag went up, sanctioned by the umpires and referee. In a nutshell, it appeared to me that the goal was disallowed by the Ballydonoghue team!!!!. Presumably another square ball. Noteworthy also when the score was disallowed the crossed flags, as is the norm, were never raised More bizarrely, when the dust settled, it took a long time for that to happen, the referee awarded a free in. Why? In any case , free pointed . Extra time. Oh this too much for somebody so old.
I felt it in my brittle , freezing bones that St. Senans would face up to the cruel gods in extra time. They did that and I am not sure you will find too many out Lisselton way, when the immediate pangs of heart breaking defeat dissipate, who will deny that their indomitable defiance was justly rewarded.
The first half of extra time yielded a point for St. Senans, ? Cillian, and no score for Bally. St. Senans looked ravenous and seemed to be taking control but Bally had one more trick to perform. St. Senans goalie came out to challenge an inrushing forward. Challenge was high and reckless. Definite penalty . Definite sending off. Nobody present doubted Paul Kennelly's ability to convert. Never a doubt. Scarcely time to draw breath and take stock. St. Senans moved menacingly and purposefully forward. Yes, to commemorate all the previous drama only a penalty would suffice. A penalty it was. Whatever Paul could at the other end Paudie Quille could emulate at his end. He scored 1-4 in all. I think all his scores came from placed balls. This was Hollywood stuff. I think St. Senans tacked on anther point. Not sure. I am unsure about the whole , wide world after all the uncertainty that permeated this match.
Jason Foley only came on late in the game. He was missed. Tommy Kennelly was probably their best player. Darragh Sheehy and , inevitably, Paul Kennelly were best up front.
In years to come, I suspect this win will give St. Senans as much satisfaction as their title wins. They died so many times. They came back from death so many times.
The Keane brothers were stubborn as mules in the St. Senans back line. Ronan Kerins, Sean O'Connell and Paudie Quille Sean Weir were a always a threat up front but the two men who kept rescuing them were Barry O'Mahony at midfield and Cillian Trant , a nominal wing forward but essentially an indefatigable all over the field merchant.
Barry was far too good for Michael Foley at midfield. He slowed it down, he carried it, he laid it off and delivered it as the occasion demanded. Unlike a lot of his opponents , he got more influential the more the game advanced.
As good as Barry was , I think Cillian made as significant a contribution. Strong, energetic with a good. head. He was crucial in their win. Cillian has an interesting background. As far as I know, show jumping and greyhounds would be the sporting pursuits on the paternal side. Oh, but the lineage is rich on the maternal side. Cillian is a grandnephew of Dr. Jim Brosnan and therefore a great grandnephew of Con. That DNA gives a young man a head start starting out on his football career. As far as I know he would be a first cousin of Maurice and Pat Corridan of Finuge/Lixnaw. I am told Cillian also plays good hurling for Crotta. God only knows from where the hurling inclination came!
I believe the Duffers are St. Senans next opponents. Another soft one!

plenty of talking points in match today, goals 2 penalties, 2 disallowed goals, redcards black and yellow cards. senans started off better going 4 points to nil up, Paul kennelly soloed from wellout and struck a good goal followed by a second goal from i think j kennelly.Senans were down 4 points in to second half but bally had a man sent off for a second yellow and a man blackcarded so 15 to 13 . Senans got the next 3 points and had a goal disallowed for a square in fringement.Controversily senans had a second goal disallowed after the ref appeared to give the goal but under pressure from bally players changed his mind. Senans got a point to bring match to extra time.Senans also had a man off for a second yellow Both teams scored a penalty in extra time but senans also scored 3 points. Players from both sides gave it their all, senans were a bit fresher

I hope Barry Mahony is in Jack O’Connor’s initial panel. I think he definitely should be looked at as a wing forward. Cillian Trant will be right in the mix to start for the Kerry 20s next year.

Vet landed a right one there, spared us the petrol but then rubbed our noses in it with his account of what was a also a right circus.
Vet might now take the next logical step-up and tell us of such dramas in advance and so we can plan accordingly - that's just how I feel having missed such a showpiece! A few more of them and defibrillators will be scarce!
P.S. Maybe the NK board had the auld ref trying to make up for the 2 week crack in a day gone by, can hardly blame the 'hoors for reminding him!

Like you veteran, I was late - but even later. I arrived at 2.30 ready for the throw in only to see the score at 2-2 to 0-5 for Bally. I saw 10 minutes of the first half tussle - you could hardly call it football, there was so much brawling going on. Not pleasant viewing - but fortunately there were very few young eyes there to witness it.
Senans had 2 dis-allowed in the second half - the first one was correct, but the second one was bizarre to say the least. A fisted goal from a high ball, player running in from about 10 yards out. Umpire had the flag up straight away - no doubt in his mind - likewise with the ref. Even the Bally players around accepted their fate. Cue an in-rush of one sub in particular from Bally, followed by several others and mentors to-boot. The sub in particular should not only have been sent off, but should have been put outside the pitch - so aggressive was he. It looked like he was going to hit the umpire. Bizzarely, the umpire and ref changed their minds in the face of the aggression - I have never seen the likes of it. And even more bizzarely, a free was given to Senans instead for no reason about thirty yards out, which was promptly pointed. Any reps from the referees association would be well within their rights to make an enquiry on this one.
One straight red and arugby-tackle around the legs black for Bally had them at thirteen heading down the straight, while Senans had a double yellow red with 10 to go. Senans were dominant but were struggling to make hay - in the end a draw was well deserved.
Extra time, 15 vs 14, and lads were feeling cramp all over the field (the grass was fairly long - Finuge could have given it another trim beforehand). End-to-end stuff with Bally making most of their limited chances to get the penalty goal. Senans never gave up - pressing continuously and got their penalty after a well-worked move. Then another straight red for Bally. Then the 2 Behans then combined in a great move down the right wing to seal it with a fine point.
Veteran called out the best players above and I would agree with all. I would hope that Jack has a close look at Barry Mahony - I counted one ball that he gave away in the entire game. He is athletic, tough as nails, no mouthing, no silly stuff, an amazing winner and passer of the ball. He could play anywhere from corner back through to wing forward. Cillian Trant also looks to be very promising - a fine footballer who could have a promising career ahead. Tommy Kennelly at right back had a fine game for Bally - a really good footballer. Paudie Quill also excellent for Senans.
All-in-all a very exciting game and great to see some of my old neighbours and pals from my playing days. Alas, back to the Royal for me after the county final today.

Cillian Trant was absolutely brilliant at wing back for Crotta in the championship game v Ardfert this year. He showed great leadership in a game that Barry oMahony was unexpectedly quiet. And Maurice Leahy commented that he is a grandson or grand nephew of Con Brosnan.
Thanks for the match reports.

The last quarter final was played this morning. Desmonds 3.23 Knocknagoshel 0.07
Semi Finals Ballyduff Vs St.Senans Desmonds Vs Brosna
Desmonds have put up big scores in this competition so far against Moyvane and Knocknagoshel. Probably the team to beat at this stage.
