Seeing as the new manager thread disappeared but there is still so much to talk about as regards Jack, his potential management team and what their plans are for next season etc it probably makes sense to make a new topic about it all.
Just reflecting on the past 24 hours, I am pleased to see the CB release a statement being very thankful to Keane and his backroom. These guys still have a lot to offer Kerry football and I'd hate to thing the whole selection process has lead to bridge's being burnt on either side.
We can't afford to alienate people of the caliber of Keane, Tommy, Fitz.
I also think it was only natural, as reported, that there should have been some honest questioning of the selection process at the ratification meeting last night. Any time a Kerry manager is selected it is a huge decision and every club and delegate and supporter on the street will have their opinions and are entitled to voice them.
There's obviously been huge media coverage and no little controversy over how Jack got the gig, personally I don't understand a lot of it. I don't believe this was preordained or anything and I thought it was perfectly reasonable to have a selection process and if Keane wanted to remain that he should have to go through the hoops like any other potential candidate.
One last thing I wanted to bring up was the Off The Ball segment on their morning podcast on Monday. I know someone posted a link to it, and I listened to it this evening on a run.
Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd have a pretty low opinion of that crowd's GAA coverage. IMO they are as far from unbiased, neutral journalism as you can get - all you need to consider is there insufferable fanboy attitude to Dublin GAA and its facilitated dominance.
I really cannot believe some of the stuff they were claiming. Like the fact Keane was unaware going into a meeting with the selection committee that this was the interview and that he wasn't probably prepared and didn't have a presentation to show them. Whatever their sources were I'd question them to put it mildly.
Tony Leen in the Examiner tonight seems to cut the legs under what OTB were claiming and Tim Murphy was very strong in responding to their claims.
Realistically come next spring most people will not even remember all this. There is a whiff of silly season about it all. Still though for a county used to doing these things in private and efficiently the last two weeks were very unKerry like.

Kerry legend Dara Ó Cinnéide has congratulated Jack O’Connor on his appointment as Kerry manager for the third time, adding that it was good there was competition for the post.
Ó Cinnéide was part of the management team put together by Stephen Stack for the job, but O’Connor was appointed manager again last week.
“That competition is over and Jack won - I congratulate Jack, he always does a good job when he goes in,” said Ó Cinnéide.
“He has good men around him, like Diarmuid Murphy of Dingle.
“It’s good there was competition for the post - we didn’t have any interest until we saw there was a vacancy, then we put our group together and went for it.
“I’m hoping now that everyone in the county gives support to Jack and the team he puts in place.”
Speaking to An Saol Ó Dheas on Raidió na Gaeltachta, Ó Cinnéide added: “I met one of the (Kerry) players in Dingle on Friday before this was announced and said to him it was a good sign there was a competition for the manager’s job, because the evidence shows Kerry are close enough.
“Tyrone beat Kerry by a point after extra time and went on to win the All-Ireland, and while the mathematics of football don’t work in straight lines, Kerry are close enough to them.
“Dublin are close to them, Mayo are close to them, Armagh will be good next year and Tyrone themselves will improve next year too.”
Ó Cinnéide said it was time for former stars like himself to “put their hands up”: “Past players, once you can’t play for Kerry any longer and there’s nothing else you can do... maybe it was time for a few of us to jump off the ditch and put our hands up.
“We wanted to help because it breaks our hearts that Kerry aren’t winning the All-Ireland.
“Watching the All-Ireland when Kerry aren’t involved - I don’t enjoy that, no more than I enjoyed the ‘famine’ before Kerry won in 1997, and Paidi Ó Sé didn’t enjoy that either that time.”
Ó Cinnéide acknowledged outgoing manager Peter Keane also: “It’s important to say too that the group Peter Keane had, they did a lot that was right but I suppose their race was run.
“That was clear when the vacancy was advertised but I suppose their race was run because historically three years is what you get in Kerry to win something.
“Against Tyrone they were five down in extra time and got it back to a point, I’d say the players were happy enough, they were playing for each other and for the management but once the vacancy was advertised... it’s important to recognise that Kerry won three minor All-Irelands in a row under Peter. That’s not easy.”
The An Gaeltacht clubman pointed out that tension isn’t unwelcome in a team environment.
“In any group of 30 people - or 50 people, as you have now - there’ll be people who disagree with each other.
“A football team - any team, in fact - is strange, because you all come together with an objective in mind, and it’s management’s job to lay out the strategy that will help achieve that objective.
“And people will fall out with each other. The best years we had playing we were knocking off each other and blowing up with each other - that tension has to be there. There’ll be people who are unhappy because they didn’t get this or that.
“I’ll never forget in 2009 walking out onto Jones’s Road, outside Croke Park, after Kerry had played in a sixth final in a row. Kerry had won in 2004, lost in 2005, won in 2006 and 2007 under Pat O’Shea, and lost in 2008 before Jack won in 2009 in his second spell.
“I asked Pat O’Shea if he was disappointed and he said his heart was bursting with happiness for Kerry - he was disappointed, I suppose, that he wasn’t there but he had done his bit.
“I thought he might get in the race when the vacancy was advertised, but he didn’t, and he’s involved with his club. There are always good people in Kerry when it comes to football and he’s a good example.”
Ó Cinnéide described O’Connor as “experienced, he knows what to expect.
“The people of Kildare won’t be too thankful to him, the way he left them, the way he advertised that so publicly... he knew well what he was doing but Kerry will always be number one for Jack.
“It’s a great Gaeltacht story in one way, to have two from the Dromid Gaeltacht as Kerry managers, Declan O’Sullivan with the U20s and Jack with the seniors.” The 2004 captain admitted to his disappointment - and to disappointment that coach Donie Buckley has no role in Kerry.
“Of course I am (disappointed), no doubt.
“I’m disappointed for the likes of Donie Buckley above all, he’s someone with a lot to give and any of the players who have worked with him would recognise that.
“It’s a pity he can’t be involved in football in Kerry because Kerry football is all that he thinks of, even though he travels the country helping different clubs and counties.”
Asked what Buckley would offer Kerry, Ó Cinnéide said: “The thing they need.
“I’d like to see a role given to him but I think when you go in with a package it’s clear who you’ll be working with and who you won’t be working with.
“He’s one person, there was another great person, Joe O’Connor (with the Stack management group), but Jack will have great people as well. You want to win a competition like that but it doesn’t always work out the way you want.”

There is a lot in that by Dara.
Time to circle the wagons behind Jack maybe.
Also, i hope those who are disappointed will continue to coach at underage and college level and they can have another shot at the top job in due course.

I don't think there is much in that at all. Dara is the ultimate diplomat and he says nothing of consequence there.
He tells us PK's race was run so it was clearly going to be Jack yet he saw fit to let his name go forward to prevent Jack.
WHY????
Again Dara is a diplomat and the less said easiest mended.

Reasons to be cheerful:
Every time Tyrone have won the AI, Kerry have landed Sam the following year. And of course Jack was the manager on each occasion.

You're putting a phrase in inverted commas that was not in inverted commas and I did not intend any part to be considered a direct quotation. The point I was making was that if he was of the opinion that PK's race was run, then the only other candidate based on this was Jack. Then he and his group decide to oppose Jack. He does not tell us why but he is entitled to be discrete.

I suppose it was easier for the Stephen Stack group to make a play for it once it became obvious that there was going to be a competition run and Jack ensured that there would be a competition.
Dara clearly is of the view Donie Buckley is what 'the players need' but that wasnt going to happen under Jack or PK.

I agree with Kerryexile , there is little or nothing in Dara’s interview apart from endorsing Donie Buckley. He correctly identifies Dara as a diplomat which is a compliment.

Mick, you and Veteran are probably right, the answer to my question was hiding in plain sight - the Stack group offered the CB an option to get DB on board. When PK was appointed they insisted he be part of management, this time they closed the door on his path.

Why wasn't Tallys name on the ticket that went in front of the county committee on Monday.
I know the answer but I'm waiting for somebody to spell it out more eloquently than I could.

It didn't need to as he is a coach. Not a selector. Otherwise where does it stop? Does the kitman need to be ratified as well?

Of course Paddy Tally’s name should have been announced at that meeting. Equating him to the kit man is being a little facetious. He is equal , at least , in status to the two selectors who were named. It is extraordinary that he is named by a Down source about 24 hours after the meeting where his name was kept under the hat. A little sleight of hand I fear.
In any case , as I have said before , we should get more details about this appointment . Currently,I believe, he is lecturing in Belfast. What are the logistics of this appointment? Is he taking leave of absence? If so, is he going to be living on fresh air for twelve months? If not ,will the County Board have to reimburse his entire annual salary? If not taking leave of absence how often will he in the county? I would imagine the latter scene would entail generous expenses as well.
Had his name been confirmed at the County Board meeting I imagine these questions and more would have been posed. Perhaps Kerry football supporters are not entitled to ask these questions. On the other hand maybe some supporters regard these details as nothing more than a bagatelle.
And all this before we come to Paddy’s modus operandi.

DOWN’S loss is Kerry’s gain, said Mourne county stalwart Kevin McKernan after it was confirmed that Paddy Tally would be a part of Jack O’Connor’s management team at the Kingdom.
O’Connor’s appointment for a third stint with Kerry was ratified on Monday night and Tyrone native Tally will be in his backroom set-up alongside Diarmuid Murphy and Micheál Quirke.
Tally’s three seasons with Down came to an end after a one-sided Ulster Championship loss to Donegal in June but McKernan says he should have been given another year with the Mournemen.
“It was disappointing for us to lose a man like Paddy,” said McKernan.
“We’re still waiting to see who will be taking over and hopefully that will be announced soon but as players it was very raw when we lost him. He had three years but two of them were the pandemic years and the biggest thing that Kerry will get from him is that he was meticulous in everything he did.
“His preparation for training and match days was second to none. He studies the game very well in terms of analysis and statistics and I would say his greatest day for us was actually in defeat against Mayo (All-Ireland Qualifiers in 2019).
“We should have turned Mayo over in Newry because the in-depth analysis Paddy did gave us the gameplan to compete with them. I know that he enjoys that challenge of dissecting teams and coming up with a plan to suit and that will be Kerry’s great gain.
“Bringing the knowledge he has now of the management side of things along with his coaching and analysis… There’s not too many like him around Ireland, he’s up there with the best of them so why would Kerry not ask him to go down there with all his expertise and knowledge and see if he can give them a helping hand towards what they want which is an All-Ireland. They are very fortunate to have him.”
McKernan and Tally first worked together when the Galbally clubman was part of James McCartan’s management team in 2010 (a run to the All-Ireland final which included victory over a Jack O’Connor-managed Kerry in the quarter-finals). Seven years later, Tally guided McKernan and St Mary’s, Belfast to the Sigerson Cup and he took over Down, then in Division Three, in 2019.
“He was building something really good with Down but unfortunately one or two results didn’t go his way and his tenure ended on one bad result against Donegal,” said Burren’s McKernan.
“We had a really bad day at the office and, with no backdoor, there was no way of redemption.
“As players, we would have been very happy with Paddy staying on for one more year, we felt he was going to bring a freshness to his management team that was going to show that he was willing to change a few things and make the whole set-up a bit fresher.
“Hopefully Down are going to bring in another really good man but, going into Division Two next year, the players were very happy with what Paddy was offering and we felt that another year wouldn’t have been a backward step for Down football.”
Dromid Pearses clubman O'Connor took over from Páidí Ó Sé in 2004 and led Kerry to two All-Ireland titles in a three-year stint.

Some are sniping at Jack and how the county board conducted their business, whereas I would have favored the Stack/Moynihan consortium as i heel a fresh voice is needed, I also see the merits in Jack as a tried and trusted candidate. Jack had the balls and neck to plant the seed and put his name out there, he knows the consequences of failure, he knows league and Munster count for nothing.
He has with him one serious knowledgeable man in Michael Quirke, a man that is a qualified GDA with external intercounty and international basketball experience and Diarmuid Murphy who by all accounts is very astute and an excellent reader if the game.
Some are bemoaning the fact that Paddy Tally is involved, I have no problem with the northerner joining our ticket, some are fearful that he will convert us into a 2003 Tyrone version II. With the skill level and forward capabilities of our squad, it would be madness turning us into an ultra defensive unit. This years league Dublin knocked in four and we shipped three against Tyrone. These failings ultimately cost us this year.
Tally is a proven defensive coach, if he adds just ten percent to our defensive unit and devises a system the will enhance our play then I don’t see the harm - Jack is an ego man, he will want to be to the forefront of everything, as a result I can’t see Tally taking too much control.
I think it’s time that we park the selection process and the fact that Jack has been ratified and look forward it 2022 with renewed hope. As I said on our similar thread Hermit, the glass is always half full. It’s time to talk of who’s staying, who may go, what new players can we see impose themselves and what current players may be in for a positional change…. Onwards and upwards

I think people are only put to pick holes in the appointment to be brutally honest. First we had people on here giving out that Peter Keane had to reapply for the gig. Then it switched to the county board not thanking Peter Keane when the County Board released their initial statement about the sub committee.
Then it moved to not thanking Peter Keane when Jack was proposed by the sub committee. Now it has moved to why Paddy Tally wasn't included on the ticket that the delegates ratified.
Paddy Tally is a coach. That is his official role. Traditionally only the selectors and managers need to be ratified by the delegates etc. My comment re the kitman was tongue in cheek. I for one welcome the involvement of Paddy Tally. It's not like we are well set defensively in fairness.
Tally was taking a year out from his job in Queens anyway before this gig came along. As for his expenses etc. I presume it's being funded the same way as it is for players etc.
At least give the new management team a chance!

I was excited at the Stephen Stack consortium as it seemed well thought through. I would have been delighted had that group got the nod. However, i can clearly see the logic is going back to Jack. Its for two years. It will fly by and if Jack doesn't deliver he will stand down. Thats his way. I can see him unearthing a few players like he did before. Tally will organise the defence and if Quirke can bring basketball nous to unlock defences then we could be onto something good. Dublin scored a total of 1.20 over both the semi final and final of 2011 with 1.05 from play. They were lauded and still are. Their defence was the key to their success. Why is it up to Kerry to play open entertaining (and naive) football and having to play every other top 4 county on their terms?

My understanding is that he was taking a leave of absence too. As for expenses etc. its none of our business really. I don't know why anyone would care about that. Did people care when Cian O'Neill was coach? I wonder are Monaghan people mad to know if Donie Buckleys gets a hotel room for a few nights?

I understand this is Ireland and it is renowned for black holes but as regards the GAA I would hope that the day is long gone of paying at the gate and the money being put into a biscuit tin with no ticket issued . If I am being asked to contribute to a players’ holiday fund I would like to be reassured that there is proper oversight involved. If I am being asked by the County Board to buy a raffle ticket for a house in Killarney I would like to be reassured that there is proper oversight of that money etc . I suspect there is proper oversight but I reserve the right to query the expenses accruing from any project which I regard as foolhardy, inappropriate etc. In other words are we getting value for money, could the money be spent more prudently etc. . Accountability becomes paramount when a body is spending other people’s money. Your are right of course about Monaghan. I couldn’t give a curse if all their expenditure went on building factories to manufacture jackets for gooseberries.

What is the precise history between JOC and Donie - was the coolness not with EF at the time and that JOC didn't step in hardly prevents him from getting Donie on board - that would be the dream team for the majority.

Kerry obviously are not far away.
There will be a 'new manager' bounce next year one way or the other. So we should be in a position to win it.
The main worry I have is who Jack will jettison. I wonder will be want to clear the 'big characters', the fellas who might be a bit of hassle for him, so nobody will challenge his authority. That could lead to a leadership vacuum on the pitch.
If we don't win it next year we won't win it the year after if you ask me.

Maybe not every detail but as you say if people are buying tickets etc you should be able to have some idea where it goes. More so this CB as i don't think there's ever been one that's put so much focus on bringing in money.
