Todays announcement is interesting.
County season from Feb to July.
Regional Alliance League division south/North with relegation and top place play offs.
Championship knockout with qualifiers. No super 8s.
All Ireland Final July 18th.
No club action until after this date.
Initial thoughts are of disappointment as it means no supporters in 2021 in all likelihood.
The GAA could have stuck with this years format with the prospect that supporters would be able to attend games in the second half of the year but they opted against this.

Delighted the super 8s farce is gone Me too Mick, The Mayo game last year being the exception. Overall though it's a failed concept.

It was by no means perfect but I wouldn't be as anti Super 8s as others. Seeing top teams take each other on regularly was like watching the National League during the summer.
My favourite games over that last two championships that we could attend was Mayo in Killarney and Monaghan in Clones. Going to Navan last year was another highlight.
I'm sick of going to Croke Park for boring quarter finals. Although I'd bite your hand off for one now.

Looking at that calendar, I wonder if the Junior All-Ireland will ever return ?
Would be a shame if this competition came to an end.

Without them, there's just too few high-end games in the championship even if you go all the way. And too many sterile, poorly attended Q/Fs in Croker. Also, in many years a super 8 game would be the only home game you'd have. By contrast, it might be the only away game the Dubs had; now I suppose it's back to every game in Croker for them again? This is disappointing and a retrograde step imho.

The 2nd tier is going ahead i see, dont see why this will work any better than the last time it was tried , they nearly wouldve been better creating a tier one of the 5/6 teams that might give dublin a game (which is what they want ) and play home and away or something.
I dont get the 2nd tier at all whats it for? If all the div 3 and 4 teams want it fair enough i think however that isnt the case somehow.

It's not really a 2nd tier at all - it's just a 2nd tier competition in the qualifers. Instead of the teams going into the qualifiers against Division 1 and Division 2 sides, the Division 3 and 4 sides will play games against each other. The situation in the qualifiers over the last few years was that these Division 3 and Division 4 sides were competitive amongst themselves but had a dire record against Division 1 and Division 2 teams. Hardly any of these Division 3 and 4 teams ever managed to get out of the qualifiers. Support from the actual players on Division 3 and Divison 4 teams was fairly strong when it was voted on at Congress by all accounts and it passed with 75% of the vote. One big thing is that players can't get transfers abroad until their team is knocked out of the Tailteann Cup - a big issue last time out was that lads[especially the better players] in Division 3 and Division 4 counties were going to the US for cash once they were knocked out of the provincial championships, which definitely took the shine off it to an extent. It's mad that there seems to be no issue with the hurling championship having 5 tiers, yet so mnay people seem to have some massive hangup about the qualifers [not the actual championship but just the qualifiers] having a 2nd tier in football.

It's a long time since we had a memorable quarter final in the old format. Still think the super 8's or some equivalent is a better format. All that needs to be tweaked is taking Dublin out of Croke Park for 2 of the three games.

They say they won't train to play in the second tier championship but will train to play in a championship they A. have no hope of winning and B. will more than likely be out of before June. The players going to New York, Boston etc is an issue that hould be looked at also

Donie Buckley the new coach of Monaghan. To play devil's advocate re Donie Buckley. Are Kerry better off without him? I say this in that it seems to me if he doen't get his way he'll just trow his toys out of the pram and walk out. As i've said before if he doesn't want to be a manager then that's fine. However he can't expect to have a say in how the team i picked, and if you were to believe what's said he wants a big say in it, but then not have to take the criticisms if it doesn't work out based on his calls.

hurlingman from my knowledge Donie Buckley was wanted by Tim Murphy/KCB as part of any new Kerry management team at the end of 2018. Peter Keane never wanted him involved as he wanted to have full reign over his own management setup. A compromise was made and DB was kept on board. There was never a good relationship between DB and PK and PK decided that he didn't want any further involvement from DB during this year's league and essentially got rid of him. He was playing smaller and smaller role in team coaching this year to begin with and hence they parted ways. There seems to be alot of differing opinions on why he left but I can assure you the above is correct. It's not that he wanted more of a say, it's more a case of PK didn't want him involved. It's water under the bridge now and I am sure Monaghan will benefit from his knowledge like we did last year. Kerry need to replace him tho, and there aren't too many stand out candidates. Unless PK delivers an all Ireland next year, him and his management team will get the bullet. They are under serious pressure given the disasterous championship performance this year.

You are assuming the worst in every facet of a great man. He doesn't want to be a manager because he knows he is not manger material, maybe others should borrow his ruler? He has covered over a lot of cracks and many managers got credit for silver on the foundation created by Donie. ciarraigreenandgold is nearer the reality. Time will tell here though methinks he is getting Monaghan at the wrong side of the mountain and Ulster is far and away the most, some say the only, competitive 'big ball' provincial. I hope to be proved wrong and that PK will progress without Mr Buckley.

For once I applaud the GAA for thinking about the club players and club scene when they made their decision about the 2021 calendar. They have structured the calendar to the benefit of the maximum number of players in the GAA community. Elite intercounty sport is facilitated even in level 4/5 lockdowns - club sport is not. As the possibility/probability is greater for level 4/5 lockdowns in the first half of 2021 the GAA have structured the calendar accordingly. Play the intercounty games first in the high risk months as they will be allowed to take place and keep the club games for later in the year - by which time there is a better chance of them being able to go ahead.

Poor sign of Peter Keane as a leader and manager if he cant put his differences with Donie aside and utilise the skills and knowledge that Donie brings to a set up. Surely this would benefit all parties. Question - is Peter Keane losing the kerry supporters along with the players due to decisions like above, his overall attitude and cork result?

Yes, Antrim, Leitrim or Carlow aren’t going to win Sam, but they might face a big team on their own patch, and aim to take a big scalp. But if they’ve went to the States while still in the hunt for Sam, then why would they stick around for a B competition played in front of a few hundred, with little to no media coverage/interest?

I haven’t felt this under excited going into a championship season since 2014 when we had a poor league campaign & were beaten by Cork in our last league game by 10 points.
That season ended up fairly well so.... please God, please

There are numerous areas of they Kerry team.to be addressed going into 2021. Chief among these are at midfield. I would like to see us trial something other than David Moran and another. Maybe a mobile combination of Adrian Spillane and DOC or Jack Barry of fit. It seems to me a lot of David Moran's headless moments come at the tail end of games when he is prob mentally and physically fatigued. He doesn't have 70+ minutes anymore.
One thing that really grates is people saying Peter Keane was preparing for the Dubs with his tactics against Cork. I hate to break it to people but, Dublin would have destroyed us with that setup.
Our defence still looks very light when you look at other teams. Peter Crowley is one of our more powerful players but, looking at other teams he is just about average. I think some combination of Gavin Crowley, Jack Sherwood and Morely should man the central defensive positions.
And why not start forwards in the half forward line? If we must start a defender why not Paul Murphy as he is the defender with the skills to play there. David Clifford, Paul Geaney, JOD ( if fit) Killian Spillane, Tony Brosnan. Surely we can make a coherent full forward line from that group.

He is our best defender imo. I've read recently where the negotiations are ongoing on the make-up of the backroom team. Not a lot of time to get things back on track the way next year is layed out.
