One of the best sporting days of the year in Kerry, county hurling final day tomorrow
Last years final was a belter and I have a feeling tomorrow could be the same
St Brendans are coming with massive hunger and momentum and have match winners in the like of Fionan Mackessy, Cian Hussey , Eric Leen , Kevin Hannifan and what servants Darren Dineen and John Egan have been to Kerry and St Brendans
Kilmoyley have serious tradition in the competition chasing down a 10th county title in 20 years and a win tomorrow would them one ahead of Ballyduff at the helm of the role of honour
Two teams from the one parish in the final, expect sparks to fly!
The junior final is in Caherslee in the morning. 6 teams in the junior this year which made it a much better competition. Dr Crokes 2nd team v Causeway's 3rd team. Be another fillip for hurling in Crokes if they could win it
A parish

Kilmoyley 1-14 St. Brendans 1-11 HT 0-7 1-8
Such were the thunderous showers in my area this morning I was leaning towards staying at home. However, as I had my ticket in my pocket I decided to travel. Oh, I was well rewarded on two counts. I was greeted by glorious sunshine in Tralee which remained undimmed for the afternoon and, above all, I was provided with a blood stirring confrontation which , I suspect , has rarely been surpassed by any of our hurling finals of the past. Forget the modest score line, this was a contest from first whistle to last. We are accustomed , on a higher level, to almost having scores registered every minute which very often I find on the monotonous side. No monotony here. Every score had to be earned by laying down your body for the parish, or your side of the parish as was the case today. In spite of the intensity and the closeness of the scoring there was not a hint of malice and , as far as I can recall, not a card issued. Indeed the referee, not withstanding a couple of inevitable errors, could have have officiated from an armchair perched on the stand, such was the attitude of both teams.
St. Brendans had the advantage of a strong breeze in the first half but led by just a single point coming up to half time. Surely not enough of an advantage for the second half. However, their health improved dramatically just before the break. They were awarded a long distance free taken by Cian Hussey. It dropped short to the chagrin of Ardfert supporters. However in the ensuing play Kevin Hanafin collected and buried. Breathing space for his team. Interestingly, during that half Fionan Mackessy played at midfield , opposed by Mathew Flaherty. It was an interesting contest with Fionan probably shading it. He hit two over from outer space but Mathew was a sticky customer. David Griffin played a a lot of ball at midfield in that half.
On the resumption, Kilmoyley were slow enough to claw back the lead. Cian Hussey hit over a couple of frees( in total two from play and three frees) At one stage St. Brendans stretched their lead to six which looked comfortable , even against that strong breeze. There was an incident when I thought it was all over for Kilmoyley. A ball was cleared by Tom Murnane? and collected by Daire Nolan, very impressive all through. Daire took off with just one Ardfert defender between him and Maurice O'Connor inside on his own. If he could flick that ball through to Maurice it surely would be a certain goal. Unfortunately, Daire slipped as he made tracks and lost the ball. Surely that was curtains for Kilmoyley. No. In a contest of this nature nothing is over until everything is over. Their half back line of James Godley, Dougie Fitzell and Tom Murnane gritted their teeth and the team as a whole reverted to a methodology honed over many successes. Big Adrian Royle was given his head and made a nuisance of himself. The lead was whittled down to one and excitement was now feverish. A ball was struck in by ? Tom Murnane and collected by Maurice O'Connor. Now, we saw against Tyrone our last chance falling to man who would not be every person's choice to avail of a last chance. But if Kilmoyley supporters were polled before the match as to who they would want their last chance allotted to , I have no doubt they would shout in unison- Maurice O'Connor. It was he who got and it was he who delivered that late goal. Two up now and Adrian Royle applied the coup de gras with another point. Arfert would need a goal to level. It was no surprise that in this epic they came close to doing that but not close enough.
Flawed in some ways as all games are but this was an encounter which was contested to the last breath by all the players and indeed by the supporters as well. Never ask for more.
Daniel Collins scored five from frees.
I believe Kilmoyley are now one ahead of Ballyduff in the roll of honour. The Duffers will not be pleased by that. Preparations for next year year will commence down by the Cashen tonight. They would not want to concentrate solely on Kilmoyley because Ardfert will be there too but will the great John Egan be there? John played from the start today but was no more than a peripheral figure. If not back in 2022, good luck to you John. You were from the top drawer.

RTE - 'the most derbyish of derbies as the men from Lerrig put their title on the line against the men from Ardfert just a few fields over the road.'
The next field ya mean, what a parish league?

Congrats to Kilmoyley.
Very hard on Ardfert to lose a game that they were leading with injury time approaching.
John Meyler is a canny operator on the sideline and this is the second county final in a row that they won in the final quarter. Adrian Ryle turned the game when he came on. I think he got 2 points and won two frees that led to points. The other turning point was the injury to Stephen Leen, Ardferts captain. He has Mossie well marshalled but Mossie prospered after the injury.
John Egan has a golden chance to put Ardfert 9 ahead early in the second half. A younger John Egan would have buried it but time and tide waits for no man.
It will be a long way back now for Ardfert. Its very competitive and no guarantee that they will be there next year.
The last 3 finals have been won by clubs who concentrate on hurling and maybe thats the fine margin making the difference.
The exchanges and sheer will to win by both sides in that second half were as fierce as they were fair.
A joy to witness.
Its worth a mention too that Ardfert put the ball in the Kilmoyley net at the death but the ref whistled for a square ball. That would have put them in front again but Kilmoyley would probably have equalised anyway.
A draw would have been great.

Kilmoyley 1-14 St Brendan’s Ardfert 1-11
Kilmoyley’s three-point win over St Brendan’s sees then returning to the top of the Kerry SHC winners list with 26 titles in total. This was also a back-to-back title win for former Cork boss John Meyler’s men and they now will have hopes of completing a three-in-a-row in 2022.
St Brendan’s played with a strong wind to their backs in the first half and led by 1-8 to 0-7 at half-time.
Kerry intercounty star Fionán Mackessy fired over two massive long-range scores and Cian Hussey and Sean Brosnan chipped in with a couple of points from play before Kevin Hanafin’s goal just before half time gave St Brendan’s a four-point interval lead.
St Brendan’s stretched that lead to six points after 38 minutes with two Cian Hussey scores but they only managed one more point for the remainder of the game.
The introduction of full forward Adrian Royle from the bench changed the face of the game and Kilmoyley just chipped into the St Brendan’s lead with a series of scores from Daniel Collins, Jordan Brick, Paudie O’Connor and Royle.
In the 60th minute a long Tom Murnane delivery was superbly fielded by Maurice O’Connor and the county star finished to the roof of the net.
Kevin Hanafin had a late goal controversially ruled out for a square ball infringement but Kilmoyley did just about enough to merit their win in this battle of the neighbours from the same parish.
KILMOYLEY: J B O’Halloran, D Kennedy, C Savage, F McCarthy, J Godley, D Fitzell, T Murnane, P O’Connor (0-2), M Flaherty, J Brick (0-1), D Collins (0-6,5f), D Nolan (0-2), D McCarthy, R Collins, M O’Connor (1-1). Subs: R Walsh for R Collins (HT), A Royle (0-2) for D McCarthy (38),

Subs: F Horgan for S Leen (48) B O’Connor (0-1)for K Orpen (50), E Kearney for P O’Sullivan (52), N O’Driscoll for S O’Halloran (56)

The amazing tradition of kilmoyley putting back to back county titles together continues, a 10th county title in 20 years is really a golden era for them. Experience , belief, never say die attitude got them over the line
wonderful atmosphere in austin stack park for the final

Ardfert will feel hard down by but they could just never pull away when they needed. One of the best finsls in a long time. Is there a Munster championship this year?

I think the hurling championship has a pretty good window at the moment summer hurling and at a time when the county football championship is not on. the draw back is the gap to the munster club championship but look it impossible to have it every way Kilmoyley can celebrate, have a break from training a fortnight and then start preparing for the munster club. There will be matches for them in the North kerry champiomship and I am sure Meyler will get challenge matches around munster for them

It really puts Kerry clubs at a disadvantage when it comes to Munster as they're playing teams fresh from their own championship. I've always felt the North Kerry championship should be played in between but clubs still seem to worry about someone getting injured so they don't play any sort of game. Despite the fact someone could just as easily get injured training. On the subject of the North Kerry championship Crokes and Parnells are playing in it this year and it could bring something new to it.

Great to see Rathmore minor hurlers reaching the minor B final with wins over Causeway and Tralee Parnells
2021 is the first time that I can recall Rathmore fielding a minor hurling team, a positive for kerry hurling

Fair play to NK board for running this competition, kept lads of a particular age hurling who may have drifted otherwise GAA is strong in and around Tralee - Na Gaeil, Brendans Board, Stacks and KOR going well in the SFC and Parnells under 21s making waves in the hurling

Yes MickMack. The North Kerry clubs often picked up a lad or two from the town to play under age with them through family , friend , school connections great that these young lads now have a club in Tralee Seems to be a strong Ballymacelligott contingent in some of the Parnells teams so it not just a town team

The club standard in Tipp is very high going by the Tipp drawn county final last weekend. It was shown on TG4. Believe it or not but since the start of the Intermediate and Junior club championships only two clubs from Tipp have won the Intermediate the last in 2012 and only one Junior championship and that was in 2007. Both will be up against it but you never know on the day.
