Being of Ballydonoghue stock I suppose I'd be considered a bit of a foreigner in hurling company but anyway my intentions are entirely honourable and I have a wee story to share that might lighten the load in these strange times.
Living in Donegal and opposite the Purty surface pitch that is Letterkenny's St Eunans O'Donnell Park, I don't have to look up fixtures - once I see the congregating I down tools.
Today started with a late night, made all the later facing the prospect of another GAAless Sunday - did we every think such a crisis would be inflicted upon us. Anyway, after a lie-in I decided to take Rodgie, my new rescue Collie for a wee walk, well he decided to take me and a wise man he was as not alone did he clear my head but didn't we spot the congregation. So took Rodgie home, fed and watered us both and away I went.
And was I in for a pleasant surprise - the auld GAA for all it's imperfections never ceases to amaze me with the surprises it throws up. Yes, my local St Eunans were staging a home double header, in hurling, with the seniors facing Ballybofey stalwarts Sean MacCumhaills, preceded by a junior clash with Dungloe. Ringing any bells folks? Well at the end of the day Dungloe are now the only team in modern history to have a 100% win rate in the code, maybe in any code!
Yerra I waz going to drag it out, but that wouldn't be so nice though 'twould be a good wind up - well if truth be told I cant wait to tell ya, moreover as it is a good news story and which is rare enough in these testing times. You see Dungloe were playing in their very first adult hurling game ever, yes that's what I said, and where they prevailed by 1-9 to Eunan's 9 points. What is truly amazing is that here we have a club emerging when all we hear is clubs having to merge to field a team. Ok, they have a handful from neighbouring clubs in West Donegal but it is still a bright light, a very bright one in dark enough days! Apparently the team got a big boost with blowins from hurling counties marrying in - now we'll say no more suffice as to say the cross-breeding has clearly worked, don't know if it is thinning of thickening the blood, and if I did I wouldn't be saying!
In the course of my afternoon I got chattin with a Kilkenny man and who had you guys as 'the great revelation', no he wasn't bull5hitting, and he sees you going places so well done, very well done. Pity I live away as I'd be watching more hurling from now on, now that I had picked up the auld (hurling!) bug with both League finals in a double-header in Croker last March.
Maybe your leaders should promote double headers with football and which would have more picking up the auld (hurling!) bug. This would be a big help in making those final steps to the big time and in which I join in the wish that you get there. That Kilkenny man sees it happening anyway and he couldn't hide his admiration. I suppose Kerry as a county knows what it takes and with a good enough sponsor then it is down to effort and a bit of luck along the way.
Was it Spillane's uncle or his maternal Grandfather Lyne who said of our big ball success that 'with nothing only mountains behind us and an ocean in front of us we had nothing, so we had to make something' - and so Kerry have previous in making something out of nothing, and if the Duffers I know down the years are anything to go by then my money is on ur Kilkenny pal calling it right here.
If I hear anything more of how Dungloe bucked the trend here I'll let ya know - they actually have a great Ballydonoghue/Ballybunion border man involved and a wise man he is, and anyone who knew his connections won't be one bit surprised. Ah I didn't even know he existed as he had emigrated before I wore long panse. And yes, I had that moment that many an emigrant has - yes, I was in Ballybofey to see Donegal take on Meath and then went onto a pub to watch Kerry vs Mayo who were playing in ASP, ah yes, there I was and then you hear this voice that you know is close to your own bone, then to find out who he was, almost makes being an emigrant worthwhile.
Ah an auld tale to lift the heart, stay safe my hurling neighbours and you are a true inspiration, always have been, keep the faith and we'll prevail as Kerry people always do. My auld diary often gets booked a bit in advance but I'll be keeping them Monday nights free as something tells me that a McCArthy man might be paying a visit and I'd have to be there to witness such an historic occasion. The tide has turned with yourselves and Donegal and sure they might be our opponents bidding to accommodate Liam, careful what I wish for though, remember 2014, will we ever forget, I was put out of the house for a week and the price on Donaghy's head has only fallen by €5m.

As an addition to the above, maybe the small ballers could help me with an auld puzzle that's racking my wee brain:
1. In the last year or so there has been amazing long range points at (inter) county level - I vaguely recall three, Pat Horgan & Austin Gleeson come to mind, can anyone put flesh on the bone here?
2. What is the highest a hurler jumps for a ball - how high are his feet from the ground. As some of you including my Duffer neighbours are dual skilled, how far would say Sean 'super sub' Walsh for have ascended?
Ah finally, back in the '70's when the Duffers joined Ballydonoghues (and which reminds of my previous post with clubs merging), they had my greatest football team of all time - off the top of my auld head and in no particular order (because I'd like to drink in Ball'duff and walk out the door unassisted!), you had PJ Houlihan (wow!), Jimmy Sullivan, Anthony Brown, Mike Halloran, and a few more. Mike Hussey, John White, my auld friend Tom Sullivan (McKennas?) would be conscripted later!
The Hues had the Finucanes, Riordans, Anthony Lyons, Joint No 1 Jackie Kelly and Mike Hennessy, Dees, McMahons .. ah jazus the more you name the more you leave out, two and a half Hegartys (the wee lad being the two of course) - Tomaisin was very good, very - and didn't Gerald White make a hurler out of him in Causeway, cannot understand how Gerald's passing didn't warrant a thread here! Who am I missing - I know there are a few!
Eamomn Dowling and Brian Hilliard were before that - a wise owl had a duel here as the eye watering of oil wells.
Now there's a few dual players for you and of course the chemistry of 'my all time favorite team' would have been cemented by the Bunyans - ah be gor, dual players, dual parishers, dual brothers, dual instigators/interrogators, ie. they walked the talk - couldn't they just, and the odd auld roar too and not always from whoever fancied his chances marking the bold Johnny and who could mix it too, real dual - I feel a poem coming on here! Dual hoors, the two, dual, ends of two right hoors too as John B would say!
Anyway back to that u21 NK and County Champions team - as a boyeen I'd be in the back of my late father Jackie's Morris Marina as we'd head for a match, with laddo men like that I'd be tossed around like a feather in a storm but who was I to complain.
Ah jazus the night we won the county championship weren't we in Stop 39 in Tralee, owned by one of the most decent men to ever grace planet earth, Lisselton's Timmy Kennelly, 'The Flying Irishman' as he was known in Canada, and the drink flowed free, maybe too free! You see I was skinny as a boyeen and my late mother who was a nurse used to nurse me with a dropeen in a bottleen of Guinness of an evening, and yes, I took liberties with the cup, as you do, all about progress isn't it, start small, and sure didn't I check with Brown and Halloran if it would be ok if my own auld lad saw me and they assured me 'of course it would', and he did and it wasn't! I'll never forgive ya pair of thunderin' hoors, dual hoors and don't say you don't remember, I remember, and I remember the devilment looking out of the pair of em, and so do they - dual players, dual parishers, dual gangsters, on and off the field, outside AND inside the bloody pub, they knowing I'd be in for it if and when Jackie appeared, and appear he did, and disappear they did, and suffer did I - mind you the stiff gulp of fhiskey softened the blow! BTW I had previous form here!
Anyway another question - who scored the first goal in the NK that year - in a 1st round away game against Duagh, well it had to be because we had no home pitch! The teams met in the final again that went to a replay, and by which time I had joined the pioneers, well for the night of the final anyway - 'don't bring him home drunk' was the nurse's orders as we loaded up!
This was the team that had Robert as a worthy Kerry Minor Captain in '75, the day Micky Ned got blackguarded though Thewire says he should have had it passed. Anyway that first goal in Duagh got the show on the road - who could he be - probably never scored a point since? They say he was a born visionary and that at the tender age of 13 he saw there was nobody in goals at that precise moment - now that's what you'd call a visionary!
P.S. I also bate Johnny Bunyan in the first round of the first International Pool Tournament played at The Lisselton Cross Crucible - ah man am I a hero! Anyone look at the codes he played under - Hurlin n the biog ball, rugby, soccer I heard, did he box?, I mean in a ring? - na never did, hard and anything but dirty, Ali was lucky not to be around!

Kerry SHC: Ballyduff assert superiority over Ballyheigue in second half
FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 2020 - 22:06 PM MURT MURPHY Kerry SHC quarter-final: Ballyduff 1-20 Ballyheigue 0-15
The first of this year’s Kerry Senior Hurling Championship quarter-finals ended in a predictable win for short-priced favourites Ballyduff, but they had to wait until the second half to assert their superiority, after a competitive opening half at the Austin Stack Park.
The free taking of Nathan Guerin and some excellent points from play by Kerry senior Michael Leane helped youthful Ballyheigue stay in touch, as a brace of points from Kevin Goulding and Kevin O’Connor along with 0-4 by chief marksman Padraig Boyle, saw Ballyduff retire 0-10 to 0-9 in front.
But 1-2 from young Dylan Moriarty in the third quarter and with Padraig Boyle adding 0-8 from frees and play, Ballyduff coasted to an eight-point win with Nathan Guerin's four frees, and Michael Leane with two more from play, being Ballyheigue’s only response.
Ballyduff are now through to the semis and will be hoping to have Mikey Boyle back in action after missing out with a broken bone in his hand.
Scorers: Ballyduff: P Boyle (0-12, 0-6 frees), D Moriarty (1-3), K O’Connor and K Goulding (0-2 each), E Ross (0-1).
Ballyheigue: N Guerin (0-8, 7 frees), M Leane (0-5), C Casey and C Walsh (0-1 each).
BALLYDUFF: P J O’Gorman; J P O’Carroll, P Costelloe, T Slattery; D Goulding, D Slattery, P O’Grady; K O’Connor, A O’Carroll; P O’Carroll, E Ross, J O’Sullivan; D Moriarty, P Boyle, K Goulding.
Subs: P Walsh for K O’Connor (50), D O’Connor for A O’Carroll (53), D Goulding for P O’Carroll (53), K O’Connor for J P O’Carroll (59), L Boyle for E Ross (61) BALLYHEIGHUE: C Slattery; R Hussey, J Casey, G Slattery; C O’Mahony, M O’Halloran, D Walsh; C Casey, P Lucid; C O’Sullivan, M Leane, C Walsh; N Guerin, T Casey, R Duggan.
Subs: B Walsh for T Casey (h/t), B Sheehan for C O’Sullivan (60).
Referee: J Hayes (Limerick)

Very even and engaging first half at the end of which Ballyduff were a point ahead.
An excellent goal early in the second half knocked the young Ballyheige side back and Ballyduff wont the second half by 1.10 to 6 points
The notable feature was the number of classy young hurlers on both sides....about 4 on each side ....some of whom are 18 or 19.
Plenty of help for Shane Conway on the way at inter county.
Ballyduff have the two Boyles to come back in and they will get stronger.Jack Goulding is gone for the year...a big loss.
The stream was very good.
With the club football championship games there was no repaying of scores.
With the hurling every score from play had an instant replay but the downside was you didnt get to see the resultant puckout and since gaining possession from restarts is of paramount importance i would prefer to see less of action replays and more puckout action.
You had to go through paypal to pay for the hurling.
The ref and his team were from Limerick and were very good.

Kilmoyley beat Ardfert by 3 points in an entertaining game. They were level at half time. Ardfert were on top for a lot of the second half and were two points up with about 5 to go but Kilmoyley found thst bit extra at the end.
Daniel Collins as sweeper belted ball after ball towards Maurice OConnor wearing 13. Maurice got 7 points from play. Kevin Hanafin got 7 points from play for Ardfert.
Mackessy for Ardfert was outstanding. John Egan didnt score and he will probably retire now.
Not a sinner behind either goal and a few people in the stands. 1000 people would have been at this game and they could have social distanced as much as they needed to.

I thought the stream was okay, glad to have it for the hurling match
Thought both matches were a good contest especially Kilmoyley V St Brendans. As MickMack said this clash would have brought close to 1,000 people to Austin Stack Park so kind of sad to see if played out with a tiny crowd, though the players went at it wholeheartedly all the same
Very impressed with Mackessy and Kevin Hannifan from St Brendans and the goalie Darren Delaney
Daniel Collins and the two Connor brothers swung the match Kilmoyley direction in the closing stages

The picture quality wasn't up to scratch also referee whistle and the crowds applause were well ahead of picture. It was hard to make out players which is why the commentary was a help. But the commentary and picture weren't aligned with the play.

Abbeydorney 1.18 Lixnaw 0.19
Really good game with Abbeydorney deservedly winning.
Abbeydorney wear the colours of Kilkenny and Brian Cody would have liked what he saw from Michael oLeary of Abbeydorney.
He won nearly every puckout and dominated the game.
Another youngster with a bright future Jack Sheehan got a brilliant goal for them.
Shane Conway didnt dominate.
Abbeydorney would surely go all the way if Darragh oConnell hadnt jouned Cuala.
I would love to see them win it now.
4 or 5 of the Abbeydorney lads play football with na Gaeil

Causeway 14 points Crotta 13 points
This game was played in a downpour all through
Causeway had the ability to score points from long range.
Shane Nolan had a 90 metre free to level it at the end but it went wide.
Huge endeavour and will to win by both sides in awful conditions.

semi finals; Ballyduff v Causeway Abbeydorney v Kilmoyley. Causeway beat Ballyduff by about 12 points last year. This year they are defending their title. Ballyduff will be mad keen to knock them off their perch. I think all the Boyles are back for this game. Causeway were not that great the last day. They will have to be a lot better tomorrow to win. Abbeydorney showed huge will and guts to beat Lixnaw and Michael OLearys performance was crucial. I imagine Kilmoyley will be keeping their puckouts as far away as possible from Michael tomorrow. Abberdorney will be trying to stop Muarice OConnor from scoring as freely as he did v Ardfert and they will have to try to curb Damiel Collins influence. Maybe Daniel will mark Michael OLeary...that would be some match up. I give Abbeydorney a great chance.

Half time
Abbeydorney 1.09
Kilmoyley 1.07
Abbeydorney settled fast and had the better of the opening 7 minutes but Kilmoyley came back into it and a goal from that man Maurice McCarthy set them up coming up to the water break.
After the water break Abbeydorney roared back and a great goal gave them a huge boost. Damien oLeary rattled over 3 points from play. Tom Murnane is on Michael OLeary and doing well on him. Michael Clifford at corner back is a minor for them and have a huge game for Abbeydorney.
Waterbreak
Kilmoyley 1.15 Abbeydorney 1.09
8 unanswered points by Kilmoyley leaves Abbeydorney on the ropes
Final score
1.20 to Kilmoyley 1.12 to Abbeydorney
Paudie oConnor, Maurice oConnor and Daniel Collins were outstanding for the winners. Matthew OFlaherty the Dingle footballer was in the backine for them and had a fine match.
The second game was close till the waterbreak in the first half with Ballyduff being a bit on top.
Causeway scored a good goal on the restart and they never took the foot of the pedal that and won by 12 points in the end. Causeway were unrecognisable from the opening game. Billy Lyons was motm. Ballyduff needed goals but Tadhg Flynn was in outstanding form so there was no way back for the duffers.
On this form Causeway look like they will retain it.

Good to see MickMack promoting the hurling here
The senior semi finals went the way people predicted in that Kilmoyley and Causeway were favourites
Paudie and Mossie O'Connor were the key men again for Kilmoyley, Tom Murnane experience at the back covering important too. Matthew Flaherty from Dingle return to the side a boost for Kilmoyley as well. James O'Connor, young Mikey Clifford very good for Abbeydorney, as a team they couldnt just stem the tide when Kilmoyley went on that scoring spree. Abbeydorney are a team with potential though no doubt but havent the experience and craft of Kilmoyley just yet
Causeway way too strong for Ballyduff , though Ballyduff will take comfort from the performance of their minor players who are their future. They really missed Jack Goulding in 2020 in bit codes and lets hope Padraig Boyle injury is not serious. Causeway will be happy to see Brandon Barrett come off the bench as they will need him in the final.
Perhaps the real stories of the weekend were in the intermediate championship which has more of a countywide spread of teams in it. Kilgarvan were short a few players but would still have been fancied to beat Tralee Parnells, in fairness they did not give up their crown without a fight in a high scoring encounter that went to extra time. What a fillip for those pushing the Parnells project to reach the intermediate final
And not only a boost for hurling in Tralee, Dr Crokes have struck a blow for hurling in Killarney and East Kerry by beating 3 north kerry teams to reach the final. Crokes always associated with football but hurling has a home and a tradition there as well and some fine young home grown hurlers there in the form of Tom Doyle, Mike and Jack Lenihan and others. Crokes pitches will be busy with hurlers preparing for a final and footballers for the semi final.
so a tralee v killarney hurling final in the intermediate as a curtin raiser to the senior final, a shame that there be no crowds as both finals had capacity to make for big crowds and massive occasion

Kerry Sports
Donal Barry
6th September 2020 Doherty shoots 18 points as Tralee Parnell’s back in big time
Tralee Parnell’s 1-25 Kilgarvan 2-21 (AET)
What is it with Tralee Parnell’s and pandemics? In the midst of the 1918 flu pandemic they edged out Kilgarvan by a point to capture the Kerry county senior hurling title and now during the Covid pandemic they repeated that win over the men from the Roughty again by a point as they booked their Intermediate final berth a year after returning to adult hurling.
They may have only resumed Senior hurling last season but they proved every bit equipped to compete at this level but they needed to dig deep on a few occasions as the champions Kilgarvan threatened to end their bid for a final spot, like they did last season.
In the end, the Tralee side can be thankful for the accuracy of free taker Gearoid Doherty whose final tally of eighteen points included seventeen frees.
His eight first half points helped the Tralee side to a 0-10 to 0-5 lead but within just a few minutes of the restart Kilgarvan had taken over with the arrival of half time substitute John Mark Foley prominent, they began to reign down the long balls on the Parnell defence and hit 1-3 unanswered with Daniel Casey grabbing a goal just after 33 seconds.
It was Doherty that steadied the ship once again as he tied up matters 0-11 to 1-8 by the 35th minute and they moved ahead by the second half water break 0-15 to 1-10.
Kilgarvan however again made the better start once the game resumed and helped by a monster side line cut by Gearoid Fennessy and points by John Mark Foley, Kieran O’Sullivan and Glyn Egan, the champions looked to pull away in a dominant period but Parnell’s held onto their coat tails at 1-14 to 0-16 by the 55th minute.
When Daniel Casey got his second goal, it put the three in a row chasing champions 2-16 to 0-18 clear but then they gave up a scrappy goal in which a Doherty free fell short with a goalmouth scramble seeing Brian Lonergan with the final touch. They still needed a point and it came in the fourth minute of injury time from none other than Doherty from another long distance free.
Kilgarvan pushed two clear in the early moments of the opening half of extra time but Parnell’s hit three on the bounce to lead 1-22 to 2-18 with the conclusion of the ten minutes. Lonergan got in behind the Kilgarvan defence for what was a real goal chance but shot over.
Tralee Parnell’s Joint Manager Brian Shanahan speaking after his sides extra time win Glyn Egan returned to the play once again in the final period of extra time and it was his point that once again put Kilgarvan clear but with Darragh Reen beginning to prove a handful it was his point and his free that he won which was scored once again by Doherty, that put them clear with just 5 minutes remaining.
If Doherty was firing them over, so too was Gearoid Fennessy who once again landed a long-range point to level matters. With just a minute left Kilgarvan drew level as Sean Godley put over a close in free. With time all up and it looked to be heading to a shootout.
However, there would be a winner and it came from another dead ball by Doherty who scored his eighteen point of the game as Parnell’s created their own bit of history once again.
Tralee Parnell’s

2. Diarmuid Brennan (C)

Be a great boost for the game with Crokes or Parnells winning the Intermediate this year. Could be the kick on that's needed in both Tralee and Killarney and to keep lads interested in playing.
On a side note Gearoid O’Doherty scoring 18 points, granted 17 from frees, must be a record in either code in Kerry.

On a side note Gearoid O’Doherty scoring 18 points, granted 17 from frees, must be a record in either code in Kerry. Not a record – Niall Sheehy scored 7 goals and a couple of points for Austin Stacks in a Co. Championship hurling match back in, I think, 1956. As far as I can recall, they were all scored from open play. That’s the same man that played football with Mitchells and Kerry.

A lot of decisions by ref were questionable. 18 frees is not something you see too often.!!
