I would be astonished if the Kerry CB do not thank PK for his contribution to Kerry football, not just for his time as senior football manager but for the decades of service before then.
No chairman or board of an organisation such as Kerry Gaa would consider for a second to bring in a new manager and not thank the outgoing one.
He will be thanked. It's just a pity that there is so much time between the recommendation of the 5 man selection sub-committee becoming known, and the CB meeting to finalize ratification.
Current panel members always come out in support of the outgoing manager. Ask every 'potential' panel member and you might get a different response!

You'd think it would be standard good practice to thank any/all inter-county teams and their management for their efforts upon exit of their championship...whether the management team are finishing their term or not.
Hurling teams as well, obviously.
It is not enough for the thanks to be proposed at a regular meeting and recorded in the minutes of the meeting, it needs to be broadcast as an official statement from the executive of the board.

A bit of nonsense from Keane there. A lot of lads in that squad owe their position to him and very few players will openly tell a manager that they want him gone as there is no benefit to them of speaking up.
I’d say most other all Ireland contenders wanted him to stay on aswell and that says more than empty platitudes from players

With respect PK is wrong re players' wishes being considered - and if players said a manager should be sacked then they would also be listened to. Being listened to is not allowing that view to rule. Still, why should PK know what they said, he could only know it from them - how does he know they didn't fib him?
Of course PK's contribution is appreciated and formal recognition is hardly the point but there is a process, e.g. can't jump the gun re Tally committing to JOC, maybe that is part of the deal.
No offense but PK is a good county senior manager, not a great one and good isn't good enough anymore, what with all these tight margins. To me going defensively vs a Cork team we had 10+ points on was the end - opponents smelt a vulnerability there and who better to exploit it than The Red Hands.

Peter should have left quietly with his dignity intact just like Donie Buckley did.

Would always take managers claiming that all the players wanted them to stay on with a pinch of salt. I'm not saying the majority were not in favour of Keane staying on. However it's logical some players would prefer a change surely for selfish reasons that they might get more game time etc. Yeah - I mean looking through the squad (both starters and squad members) there's a fair number of players who would have to be worried about the possibility of dropping down the pecking order [either off the starting 15 or off the squad completely] if a new manager comes in. The easy option for a player who is in the squad is to stick with the manager who has been selecting them. there will definitely be changes to the squad, I would assume, lots of guys there not hitting the standard, we saw that this year, when we had to reuse starters as subs, also I just don’t think our squad is doing justice to competing AvB games.

In defence to the county board they normally don't thank a manager unless his term is up and he's not continuing on in the role. While everyone and his dog knows that JOC is the new manager it's not final until he has been ratified by the delegates. While its merely a rubber stamping exercise it still means JOC is not the manager officially thus, PK has not been relieved of his duties officially either.
All in all the way the media side of it has been handled has been a sh#tshow. Should have just had the interviews and convened a special meeting or whatever you would like to call it for the next day.

It is not unusual for Kerry managers to ruffle a few feathers on the way out. EF fired a fairly bitter salvo at some Kerry supporters and Paidi, if my memory is not letting me down, called a press conference with his solicitor no less by his side.
I cannot clearly recall the nature of Jack’ exit after his second coming.

I have no issue with Peters statement. He has given his all for Kerry football for a long time and has more than earned the right to speak his mind. I respect that he's saying what he's thinking/ feeling rather than *ing in the background.

I've always supported the Kingdom. I've been a season ticket holder for years and years. When Jack is confirmed not only am I not going to be a season ticket holder, I'm not going to watch the green and gold in person.
I stand behind PK in this instance as the dream team picked was picked when half the team was unannounced as we know the likes of Tally being announced before Monday would cause uproar. If it was the best team you'd announce it, all of it.
Something is rotten in the State of Denmark.

Hey savage, bet you a pint you'll be glued to the TV when you're not roaring your auld head off and it pissin down on top of ya - you're just too devout to stop practicing your religion at this stage. Ah I wouldn't pay much heed to the sequence of events re the changeover either - PK is a nearly man and he got his 3 years, wasn't promised anymore and didn't warrant anymore. JOC is a stop gap manager but he is our man now and we need to be behind him, he won't get 3 years unless he delivers by year 2 at the latest, and he may be gone sooner if he doesn't get us up to scratch and so is under instant pressure to find hoors like AO'M, PG, etc - not enough hoors in current panel though JOC feels he will have fellas playing differently - hope is right and maybe he can turn laddos around, that they have so much silk helps and MAYBE THOSE NARROW DEFEATS OF RECENT YEARS CAN BE NUDGED AROUUND TO GIVE US A 3/4/5 IN A ROW GOING FORWARD - think about it; if odds are anything to go by then that is well within range, all now down to JOC! Like teams having a pipeline of players, we now need that with management - I suppose Tomás, KD, PG, etc are posturing but there will be a lull meanwhile as they are 3 years out from being serious contenders. P.S. I posted a video about the late Paddy Prendergast in 'Agus Rud Eile' thread - take a look at it, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT, A V PLEASANT SURPRISE AWAITS, YE WILL ALL OWE BE A BIG PINT OF ORDINARY HERE! That will be 2 pints from Savage!

SAT, 02 OCT, 2021 - 07:00 JOHN FOGARTY
Last Monday evening, David Clifford and Seán O’Shea spoke to Radio Kerry’s Terrace Talk to promote the senior football championship draw.
Presenter Eamonn Hickson took the opportunity to ask them about the recommendation to Jack O’Connor as Peter Keane’s successor three days previous. Both men kicked for touch. “As players, our job is to go out on the field and play and everything outside that is left to the people in charge in the county board,” replied O’Shea. Clifford may as well have read from the same script: “Like Seán said, it’s our job and our focus to get ready for next year and hopefully throw ourselves back into a full season again.”
Clifford and O’Shea are two generational players. They may not yet have Celtic Crosses but the respect for the pair is supreme. If they had an issue with Keane’s ousting, they would have been heard.
But they didn’t offer anything, which according to Keane’s statement did not tally with what they and their team-mates were uttering privately. Claiming “all the players” told the selection committee that they had a strong preference for him to remain in charge was a big one for Keane to make. Certainly, there was backing for the manager in the group but to intimate he was unanimously endorsed by the squad is on the ambitious side.
The executive would surely not have moved to commence an interview process without consulting with the players. If they were so united behind Keane then there would have been a reluctance by officials to effectively serve him with constructive dismissal by informing him he would have to reapply for the role.
Luck sure deserted Keane this year. The semi-final situation was quintessential Catch 22. It was on the back of speaking to him and his panel that the game was played. Had he that time back, he might have insisted Kerry move on and straight into an All-Ireland final against Mayo, untested and undercooked as they would have been.
Covid didn’t help him last season either but then it helped very few and it was with that other extra-time loss to Cork in mind and the lack of an All-Ireland title this year that others put themselves in the fray as alternatives to Keane’s set-up.
Dara Ó Cinnéide wasn’t one of them yet accepting to be part of the Stephen Stack ticket, the widely respected former captain was prepared to challenge Keane. “ suppose their race was run because historically three years is what you get in Kerry to win something,” he said.
Like Mickey Harte last year, Keane played the Covid card. But to give him another few years with this golden generation of young footballers was a risk the selection committee were unwilling to take.
Before the statement, Keane had sympathy. Highlighting that Kerry lost the semi-final by one point in extra-time to the would-be winners, he now has pity. He doesn’t mention that for the 20 minutes his team had an extra man in the second half of normal time, they were outscored.
Keane will have support at Monday’s board meeting but he knew the stakes.

Sean Moran
As far back as the beginning of September it was clear that the Kerry football vacancy would be contentious.
As Jack O’Connor walked out on Kildare having apparently agreed to stay put, it was going to be a hard task to persuade some people, if he got the Kerry job, that there hadn’t been some soundings taken.
A week ago, the sub-committee charged with recommending an appointment, decided to go with O’Connor rather than Peter Keane, the outgoing manager, or a galactico cast of former players and coach, Donie Buckley.
It is clear from his statement issued on Friday afternoon that Keane feels aggrieved at the process that saw him passed over for a further term as Kerry football manager.
The most striking aspect of the statement, which was emailed to media from the former manager’s personal email account, was the charge that the sub-committee in its “decision making process” had not considered “the wishes of the players,” which he said had unanimously “communicated to the county board sub-committee their strong preference for the present management to be retained”.
It has been exhaustively covered that the choice of O’Connor was simply an option for the tried and tested. He won the All-Ireland in the first year of each of his two previous appointments whereas the other choices on offer hadn’t that pedigree.
Was Keane taken aside and apprised of the sub-committee desire for change – so that he could have had the cover normally extended to a departing manager of making his own exit? Or did he believe that he had as good a chance as either of the other two proposed management teams?
Ultimately though, this is style rather than substance. Of course he should have been treated courteously but on the substantive issue of reappointment, Keane can’t have too many complaints.
Players for the most part are happy with incumbent management but that doesn’t mean they won’t be ready and willing to work with whoever new is appointed.
In his first appointment after Páidí Ó Sé’s awkward departure, O’Connor had to negotiate a dressing room with a substantial West Kerry presence as well as members of the Ó Sé family. He has also worked with a number of the current panel as minors.
Secondly, Keane was on less secure ground when referencing the work “we had started and the momentum we had built”. Although he is right to kick back at any implication that losing an All-Ireland semi-final to the eventual winners Tyrone after extra-time is unacceptable, the problem is that it was a third defeat in successive years by different opponents.
He would have known at the start of his appointment that were he to complete the three years with no All-Irelands and the closest encounter to have come in his first season, there would be no certainty of a renewed tenure.
The process hasn’t been terribly well-handled but the county was within its rights to opt for a different approach.

Firstly, been reading this forum for years, but rarely posted a reply or comment. Was very active on Kerry Hoganstand for over ten years, this has now been disbanded. I envisage a good few of the kerry brethren will be defecting, I hope and trust our input and opinions are welcome.
I fear PK’s statement sparks a bit of sour grapes, I think the whole episode could have been handled better by all parties.
After the three years, I suspect at board level, a change was desired, initially, it appeared no obvious alternative to Peter was available, as a result, I suspect Jack was sounded out.
The emergence and strength of the Moynihan/ Stack consortium was unexpected but at this juncture Kildare Gaa had their resignation and the keys to the Kingdom has been promised.
Thing is, at club, division or county level, very few managers end their tenure on good terms regardless of success. Even in Kerry, think back to Micko after 89, Paídi after 2003, Jack himself after 2012, even Eamon in 2018. Past success means nothing when we are in a “current results” only system, even at club level managers have to be going in with the eves open, as much of a fan as I am of Keane, he surely realises that three years without tangible progress is not acceptable, more so in Kerry.
Some are saying the county board should have released a statement thanking Keane, I envisage this will come, post new appointment, there is the unlikely event of Jack not being ratified - at this juncture he is only being proposed for ratification.

I wanted Keane to stay on but was pretty much immediately resigned to the fact that in this county no All Ireland in three years means no more chances.

Keane leaving with a few parting shots. I think he had to go but I also believe it would have cost nothing to release a statement at the same time as Jack's appointment to say thanks and best wishes. The CB are coming across a little classless here for no reason.

PK is fudging it re 'all the players' as opposed to unanimous across the panel, and 'had a strong preference' and 'endorsed' as opposed to .. well insisted!
PK nearly convinced nearly us all that nearly all the players nearly said that he was nearly what they wanted - in other words, Nearly is the story of PKs reign.
PK cost us 3 AI's and unceremoniously dispensed with Donie and now TCB is supposed to feel apologetic because it didn't row in with the unloading of this drivel and bolgadash. How many more players' careers do we need to compromise - David Moran could have 3 more Celtic Crosses; have more recent recruits progressed where they should be in terms of physicality, tenacity, etc? And what about those who were overlooked by a manager who in 3 years didn't deliver the right kind of player?
I am disappointed that Donie is not involved, and as I sense TCB played safe re the risk with Stack - but then us hurlers of the ditch are not close enough to voice anything more than opinions. In TCB we must trust, if JOC doesn't now deliver then Whelan must account for why a panel of such skill didn't achieve and get their just rewards - and while we share a common objective, this to me is over and the whims of us supporters. It is their lives, the 50 hours a week, they eat and drink it, their lives are on hold as they serve us with the finest entertainment imaginable, and it is cruel - PK made his contribution but now he is about to be forgotten like thousands before him, the show goes on. Nobody is more important than everyone and each year is a closing of an the window of opportunity for players, i.e. there is only a limited time gap to get on the panel and then there are only so many playing years, and all for the pleasure of playing - no money, etc.
Ah I don't want to sound like Mr Sensible but we do need to support what is right and have our voices heard - we have no right to criticise if we don't praise. The GAA is not a popularity contest or a profit making deal - it is about honouring sportship and that is what, despite all our differences, brings us together and binds us as one.
We have an amazing legacy to honour, credentials that were won in tougher times, lets now go forth and show the world why we are Kerry, why all those 'easy' Munster Finals and All Irelands were well earned, why we wrote the book on how to play Gaelic Football, why we had the Mick O'Connells and the Maurice Fitzgeralds of the game and why we have the mould to have the Mick O'Connells and Maurice Fitzgeralds of today, and tomorrow.
Chiarraí abu a chairde go léir - old and new!

North Cowrea @ballythefireside: with regard to your question, the forum had two sections, there was a general page for all gaa news with a general discussion forum. But there was also a link to a county specific page, this had Kerry related news only and a specific Kerry Forum Page, people came and went but there was a cohort of about eight of us and then during the peek gaa season another six or seven regulars would contribute.
In fairness it was a great set up and very insightful, i Joined about ten years ago, Hermit, kingdomboy1, TraleeGreey, Kerry Gerry and CiarraiMick we’re the mainstays. In fairness very learned and passionate Gaa men that will really add to discussions, Unfortunately, over the last twelve months, the site became infiltrated by multiple users spouting tripe and just posted to get a reaction and unsettle or disrupt threads - it’s been going downhill with a bit.
Thanks for the welcome.

Yes John4 I know that's technically the case, still a line of two when the recommendation was made would not have hurt. I mean in the highly unlikely event Jack wasn't ratified I doubt Keane would still have been asked back or would have taken the gig anyway.
But I also agree Keane would have been best to keep stum. Not sure what's to be gained by airing this in public.
North Cowrea to be honest I only cane across this forum after I found the Kerry forum on HS. I started out posting in a place called An Fear Rua which was a great site, and had a Munster focus so it was brilliant for having chars about the hurling. I'm a Crotta man myself. When that site closed HS was the first place that came up. So that's the only reason. Well that and the fact I was always a little nervous about posting on here seeing as ye all seem to really know yet stuff. I'm only an amadan on the terrace in my Kerry shirt a pure Kerry animal as Paidi would say.

Sounds like we have some like-minded amadans and Paidí animals aboard, and ta to them for their intro and which sounds good.
We try not to trouble control too much on here but of course we don't always succeed, they are voluntary though we call it as we see it, the cornerstone of open debate - and yes, we all have our own wee idiosyncrasies!
Veteran does amazing match reports with a few UCC sized words so keep the auld dictionary handy!
Mandad is awesome - wise man with encyclopediac knowledge of days past but the hoor doesn't tell us nearly enough - look back on his posts and you may agree, awesome, right up there with John B, Houlihan and Kennelly IMO, couldn't have too much of a good thing.
Annascaultillidie is the explorer of us - he has no sense but makes sense of senseless things, ah only joking!
And me, I'm the poetry in eMotion man, I write and so drop in when the mood hits me and which some think is far too often.
We have a few scouts who fairly call it too, and of course everyone has their moments!
Overall it is a good place but always room from improvement and no doubt the new contingent will be part of that.
Now I'll shag off, I have a busy day ahead taking in Aghyaran v Owen Roes in Omagh this evening; yes, I plan to be there - heard Tyrone club games are a special occasion, inter-county room mates McShane and McNamee on opposite sides, local derby angle to it as well so all excited - a bag of McCauleys chips in Lifford on the way, maybe an ice cream and of course a few Lemonades after, no Nash's though, Football Specials they call 'em up here!

I am not perturbed that the KCB has not yet formally thanked PK. I have no doubt it will be done and effusively so, as it should be.
In the meantime, I wish to thank Peter for his efforts. No doubt, there were times when I criticised him as much as anybody, particularly after last year's Cork game. It is likely that was the nadir of his career. I castigated him then because that result should not have happened. The chasm between the teams was cruelly exposed in Killarney this year. Prior to that match and since , Kerry have frequently played sparkling football with a great deal of success. But of course the harsh judgment and the appropriate judgment, is that Peter did not bring back Sam. Still , there have been several close calls, none more so than the loss by a point in extra time to this year's eventual champions. I have said before, that for the most part, you create your own luck, still it is not unreasonable to expect that a dollop of it would land unsolicited on your lap occasionally. You did not enjoy an excess of that commodity.
The capricious nature of sport, and our response to it, was further brought to me during the week when watching Manchester United labour to a likely draw against a Spanish team. During the course of the match their manager was consistently criticised. I do not know enough about the sport to say whether all that criticism was warranted. One of the major gripes of the commentators was the anaemic display of Ronaldo, making no impact, not working hard enough etc. This fed into the criticism of the manager. The thrust of the comments was that in spite of Ronaldo being insipid on the night the manager did not have the guts to replace him. This was the constant refrain. Well, well, well --. At about the last minute of extra time Mr. Ronaldo gets his foot to a loose ball and snatched the victory. Hero once more. No more talk about the manager not having the guts to replace him etc. Once again the outcome determines the chronicle. Had David been available for extra time !!!!
The vagaries of sport and life, Peter. Hold your head high. Your contribution to Kerry football, at underage and senior level, has been noble. Who knows, a reenergised Peter, a wiser Peter, may return sometime in the future with a freshened up backroom team. I wish you and your family success and good health.
