A cynical ploy to stop a glorious Longford three in a row.

Not every young fella goes to college. Could they not have put in place a rule where sigerson or lower level college affiliated players are not allowed play IC preseason matches?

I see preseason competitions are suspended for 2025. Why? I imagine the upshot will be counties scrambling around for challenge games. People are ravenous for intercounty games at the turn of the year. I always enjoyed going to the McGrath cup games when they were within my reach. I believe the McKenna cup games attracted huge attendances . Perhaps there is a logic in this decision but it escapes me. I personally never understood what people's issue was with them. Teams will only be training at that time of the year anyway. Plus I don't think I've ever heard of players complaining about them. The proposal to suspend the preseason competitions came from the GPA.

I'd imagine the vast majority are in 3rd level. I think it's sensible. The league starts end of Jan and the league is really irrelevant at this point once you are in Division 1.

If you cannot play third level players in IC pre season comps, who will be playing then

Is there many in the Kerry panel going to college? What would a Kerry team look like without these lads?

What do we actually gey out of the McGrath cup ?
Giving Tip or Limerick a hiding doesn't serve us.
IF Jack played 15 panel players instead of regulars then I'd be all for it.
Dublin certainly don't roll out the big guns for the OByrne Cup infact for years Jim Gavin didn't even manage the team during those games.
Otherwise we are better getting good hard training sessions in the legs.
Winter slog might serve us better.

I think a couple of years we even entered the Kerry U21's as they were at the time to give them game time as prep for their championship.

Gaelic Players Association (GPA) chief executive Tom Parsons sees November becoming a “zero contact” month at inter-county level following the decision to suspend pre-season competitions next year.
Despite 60% of counties supporting their retention in recent feedback, Central Council on Saturday voted to disband the 2025 January competitions on the grounds of player welfare and cost savings.
The GPA have long advocated for the pre-season matches to be axed. They had previously argued successfully for a six-week pre-season block for players to be ready for those competitions but Parsons now envisages collective training commencing in December.
In a memo to players this afternoon, Parsons writes: “Having had our proposal to pause pre-season competitions passed, we are now in the process of defining the new return-to-training date. “This will move from November to December. This shift should enable us to push for an inter-county zero-contact period for the entire month of November, allowing players the much-needed rest before pre-season training resumes.
“We believe these steps, combined with the shortened season and the continued support for the split season, will improve the welfare of inter-county players and provide a healthier, more sustainable competition structure.”
Parsons confirmed GAA president Jarlath Burns had supported the GPA’s proposal to ditch the pre-season games. “This pause will significantly reduce player load and help prevent burnout, allowing players more time to recover before competitive fixtures begin,” he told members.
Parsons spoke of further data pointing to the need for rest and how 56% of players last year reported “having less than two weeks' rest between club and inter-county activities, and 78% experienced a similarly short break between the end of inter-county competitions and the start of club matches. This unsustainable schedule has been one of the main drivers for our push for change.”
He also cited 84% of players expressing backing for a smaller inter-county season of approximately seven months. “This change will not only help reduce the overall intensity and length of the competitive calendar, but it will also create more opportunities for players to engage with their clubs and participate in third-level competitions.
“This shortened season reflects the strong preference among players for a more balanced schedule, allowing adequate recovery time and reducing the risk of burnout.”
While the former Mayo footballer also mentioned players’ continued support for the split season, 83% of male footballers and hurlers backing the divide in the GAA year. “This model allows for a dedicated period for both inter-county and club competitions, ensuring that players can focus on each without overlap. The GPA remains committed to ensuring that any future changes preserve this balance and continue to prioritise player welfare.”

Anyone at the minor final last night, reading online it appears to have ended in controversy.. anyone there? Watched it online. Last play was a 45 for Stacks. Time was up so they had to go for goal. Ball was lofted in to square, Stacks won break and shot for goal but defenders blocked it on the line. Ref blew full time as he was entitled to do. St Kierans lads stopped playing when they heard whistle, and then a Stacks player went in to strike rebound to the net. No reason for controversy really. Ref had a very good game I thought.

Pretty much sums it up - Stacks wanted the play to be allowed to continue but the four minutes of injury time had elapsed. Had guys arguing there was a delay taking the 45 but it was the normal time to collect and place the ball. Kierans lads had hands in air celebrating when the ball hit the net suggesting the whistle was gone - slow motion would be required to get the sequence clear. Gut wrenching for Stacks who seemed in control for much of the match but they conceded two goals which ultimately told - Real turning point was St Kierans second goal - they turned over a Stacks attack and broke fast for a well taken goal. Kierans probably a better 15 as Stacks relied on some (excellent) individuals - always difficult for a club to win this competition.

Watched it on Clubber, great game, great crowd, very well refereed. Stacks were dominant in the first half and probably should have had more than a 4 point advantage. St kierans wiped out that lead in their first two attacks of second half and were far superior in the second half. As previous posters said, final whistle was gone, st kierans players had clearly stopped and were celebrating. No controversy

Thanks for clarification - the general consensus was ref was very good, but reading online made no sense, does now... ref gave one chance to get a winner, when chance went.. whistle went.. but Stacks played on... makes more sense now....

Ah lads I can’t agree with the above assessment on the stacks game.
I’m no fan of stacks, to put it lightly, but for the ref to blow for full time when the ball is 6/7 yards from Kieran’s goal is absolutely crazy.
If we lost an all Ireland final like that then we would be saying that we were robbed.
Ffs it was a ludicrous decision and saying that the time was up as per the clock is one thing but we are asking for officials to apply common sense and the ref didn’t here.

I notice, as in Kerry, Dublin have appointed an in-house , low profile manager for their hurlers. Perhaps, sanity is making a comeback in making these appointments. It makes economic sense anyway.

I wasn’t at the match but the incident reminds me of a similar occurrence in a Kerry hurling final I attended a few years ago. The trailing team were awarded a last minute close in free Seemingly, the referee told the free taker he would have to score direct. The free was blocked but the ricochet was blasted home. The “ goal” didn’t stand. Needless to say all hell broke loose but the referee stood his ground. I cannot recall the the year or the teams involved. Perhaps , our hurling brethren could help me out. I wonder did the referee tell the Stacks free taker he would have to score direct?

I would have thought that if the ref indicated last attack, until such time as the ball goes dead or the defending team actually hold the ball in hand - the game continues. The Kierans players stopped playing on the whistle in any case so may have blocked Ben Murphy's shot. Physically holding the ball for me indicates game over.

It will be an absolute travesty if the hooter isn't brought in for both football and hurling.
The fact that it wasn't brought in years ago after passing in Congress (twice) is one of the great failures of the GAA, especially when you see how well it works in the ladies game. It would have saved so much hassle over the years.

A form of the hooter where the game ends once the ball is out of play after the hooter would work better.
