While it was always a long shot to get to the final today was still a disappointing display. Will Molumphy stay on? I assume he was given a two year term that's up now. Would be hard to make an argument for him to stay on. Kerry certainly have gone backwards over the past couple of years. Great excitement originally after we beat Tipp in the pre season last year but I felt Kerry really were underwhelming. We started to struggle to beat teams we were comprehensively beating under previous management. That would be my opinion but I wouldn't claim to be the most up to date with the ongoings of the senior hurlers.

In 2017 and 2018 Kerry were beating Laois and Offaly.
A big issue is Kerry don’t have near their best team playing available.
Between lads no committing to the panel, lads preferring football etc they are not going to get the best out of themselves until the best hurlers in Kerry are playing.
On another note Mikey Boyle and Sean ‘Beans’ Weir retired after the Laois game yesterday, what unbelievably servants they have been to the green and gold.

Like Darragh Egan for Wexford, Moloumohy was completely inexperienced at this level taking over the Kerry hurlers and if truth be told it has shown over the few campaigns. His team look really like they are just going through the motions at times. Davy Fitz would be the man for Kerry!

I don't think he's even 30 yet. Although farming full time wouldn't be a help either. While Kerry are never going to get a big name to manage the hurlers at the very least it should be someone with some sort of experience behind them. Bar at intermediate level in Cork Molumphy had no experience.

On another note Kildare losing all their games is quite a surprise to me anyway.
Do they go straight down to Christy Ring? Or is there a play off?

Anthony Daly has been out of management for a long time now and it doesn't look like he'll return at this stage. Brennans comments in that interview about Laois have probably not been great for his reputation.

The biggest criticism he is open to is the style of hurling kerry are playing. it lends itself to having to shoot from far out the field and often only 1 player in the full forward line. It hasnt worked and kerry supporters are not happy with it

At third reign like Jack in the football?! He is stone mad for hurling and knows the club scene inside out Aidan Mahony is making an impact with Dr Crokes ! A real impact appointment would be Eamon Fitzmaurice! Not such a mad suggestion. He played hurling with Lixnaw and Kerry from the Fitzmaurice family whose great grandfather played on the 1891 all ireland winning hurling team all of the above is loose talk really, there may not be a vacancy and all the names above may have no interest

I think a big regroup is needed next year and look to try and find some fresh faces as the three who have retired will be hard to replace.

It must be 15 plus years since there hasn't been an outside manager. Myler might not be a bad call. AFAIK he's retired now so would have the time to commit. If it's to be an outside manager Colm Bonnar is someone I wouldn't mind been given the job. It didn't work out well for him with Tipp but imo he was totally trown under the bus by thrm. His time with Carlow proved what he can do at McDonagh level.

That’s why Kerry can’t get up to the next level. You need every single top class hurler that is in the county available. Dublin hurlers have the same issue, in 2013 they barely lost the all Ireland semi final to Cork and if they had of had Diarmuid Connolly, Ciaran Kilkenny, Emmet O Conghaile and one of the best under 20 hurlers in Ireland at the time Cormac Costello playing they would of won the all Ireland. The big traditional hurling counties don’t have to deal with this issue and it is a big issue.

Darragh Egan set up in a similar way v Dublin recently, Rory O’Connor arguably their most potent forward was hurling out around wing back with number 15 on his jersey. It’s basically telling the opposition we are inferior to you. All teams drop back to help out their defence but the day of an out and our sweeper is gone.

A very disappointing end to our inter-county season, heavily beaten by Offaly and Laois when it mattered.
Have to concur with the sentiments expressed about the team going backwards under the Waterford man, a puck of a ball from snatching a win at the MacDonagh final last May and now mid table mediocrity. Poor League on top of that as well.
I've had my issues with Molumphy as a supporter so won't be clamoring for him to get an extension. The way a brilliant talent and servant like Shane Nolan was treated last year stuck in the craw especially when Molumphy tried to explain it away and was shown up for lying.
Was not impressed with how the two lads were treated either for a bit of drinking a few weeks back.
What's the alternative? Well your guess is as good as mine.
Sorry to see Mikey Boyle, Daniel Collins and Sean Weir call it a day, they gave it everything over the years and gave us a few great days too. All the best in retirement lads!

Did Molumphy not have a one year rolling extension agreed after the initial two year extension.
Regardless, if Molumphy does depart, what viable options are out there, would we ever bag a serious contender, I always felt that someone like Anthony Daly had a grá for Kerry but he has higher ambitions, the example being he was over Dublin which could bankroll the majority of his panel and managerial needs, whereas in Kerry, the general consensus is that Kerry hurling is the poor relation compared to the footballers in the finances stakes... is that a fair assumption or an aged opinion.
Who was in the running the last time the post was available?

Sorry, Hurlingman, when I said high profile name, I actually intended in the managerial brackets, not ex-players that only see us in Kerry as a stepping stone or an experimental jaunt to add to the CV. Is there any such manager out there? A few Nk clubs had the like of Meyler, Daly and Cummins, would someone of this ilk, take the senior county reigns? What would tempt a serious contender?

Cummins has been the Tipp U20 manager and I don't think they've get the world alight. The big issue I'd have with him is how committed he'd be and if he'd walk away after a year. Remember he was never too committed in the past when he was past of the Kerry backroom team.

Is there any high profile manager at McDonagh level? Davy Fitz if available or Anthony Daly would be an interesting choice. Eddie Brennan would be an interesting choice if he was willing to travel. Davy is done at inter county level imo I can't see anyone giving him a job at this stage. Anthony Daly has been out of management for a long time now and it doesn't look like he'll return at this stage. Brennans comments in that interview about Laois have probably not been great for his reputation. Should Brennan's comments about Laois stop him getting the Kerry role? As long as the Kerry CB give the hurlers the fair support that they need, Brennan in the role should not be a problem. A manager who successfully won the McDonagh and then the preliminary quarter-final should be high in demand.

Reading between the lines with the Moloumphy interview after the Laois game, I think he will be stepping down.
He should make his decision shortly as to give the County Board time to get a new manager in place before the club championship in July.
Eddie Brennan, John Meyler or Ben O' Connor would be my top 3.

My point re Brennan is he just looking for a CB to trow money at him and not worry about results etc He did well with Laois but I haven't heard his name mentioned with any other jobs since. Ben O Connor will actually be another good option. He's managed in Kerry as well.

Westmeath beating Wexford at the weekend, having got a draw with them last year, really puts where Kerry are st in prospective. At the moment it's hard to see Kerry getting a similar result.
Also like Kerry it shows how putting a manager with little experience in charge can backfire massively.

Fair play to Westmeath moments like this keep the game going in these parts of the world. I also think the half-time scoreline of that game is something that should be pinned up in every GAA dressing room in the country - a team is never beaten till the final whistle and any lead can be overturned!

Delighted for Westmeath, but lets be honest, Wexford didn't work hard enough. I suspect that we'd have come up short, but we're not far behind Westmeath. Just like our footballers, we are not seeing enough new players break into the team. It's not all down to the coaches either - the commitment required is huge from both players and management. As a supporter, I'd like to give a shout out to all the lads who do commit to the county team. A special thanks to the retiring trio of Mikey Boyle, Sean Weir & Daniel Collins. If Wexford do come down to Joe McDonagh cup, they have the players to blow everyone else out of the water once they come at it with the right attitude. Either Antrim or Westmeath would be preferred to give us a decent shot at winning.
