The final yesterday followed a similar pattern to Offaly in the league. We were carved open for a few well taken goals. We then conceded a sloppy goal yet again. I would drop the keeper. The sloppy concession of goals and puck outs going out over the sideline should warrant a change. The ridiculous free for an Antrim player falling over himself and then the ref not allowing Kerry one more play is a difficult one to take. A cracking game of hurling deserved better decisions when the game was in the melting pot. When we lost to Offaly, we had to travel to Antrim the week after. After our loss yesterday, we have Wexford in Tralee next weekend. I hope the lads can dust themselves quickly after yesterday and deal with this quick turnaround. Hosting Wexford in Tralee can be a great occasion. If we can put in our best performance of the year and see where that takes us, it should hopefully be a great day out. Many years after giving Limerick a fright, it'll be great to give more illustrious opponents a fright!

Really enjoyed the comeback by Kerry yesterday showed great character and spirit and were very unlucky in the end not to at least secure a draw. Fantastic opportunity for the team now to give it a real go in the quarter finals. As I live in south Kerry outside the hurling strongholds the only thing that disappoints me is the negativity that often surrounds hurling in Kerry .Only last week people were complaining about not getting accommodation for the hurlers ignoring the hotel crisis and then I see they had rightly a plane chartered to get the team to Dublin which is a Brillant way to travel to the game as it allowed them to sleep in their beds and I assume no expense was spared in this and rightly so .As regards the system is it not great now to be parachuted into the quarter finals and I bet loads of weaker football counties would give their right hand to be given this opportunity in football and I think if Kerry want to progress they should aim first to get into the top tier of the league and progress from there .Finally I would urge everyone in Kerry to really get behind the team and management for this unique quarter final enjoy the occasion and refrain from the cheap pot shots regarding how hurling is treated in Kerry like our dear neighbour Mr Cusack ..

Who knows what might have happened if the garden gate had not been left wide open and unattended so often in the first half. At halftime, I could not help recalling the phrase of Jimmy Magee "different class".
I do not know what was said at halftime but it resulted in electrifying the Kerry lads and I suppose the introduction of Jordan Conway did not hinder our ambition either, nor did the moving out the field of Shane Conway. Was there a valid reason for Jordan's omission? There were few more accomplished forwards in either of the two matches. In any case , the second half was not long in progress when it was clear that my Jimmy Magee reference was not apt. There was no disparity in class here, rather we presented ourselves with a very steep hill because of our tardiness out of the starting blocks. For horse racing aficionados it was eerily reminiscent of the Epsom Oaks on Friday. There, Frankie Dettori's horse stumbled coming out of the starting stalls. As a result, he trailed for most of the race before steaming home like a train only to be pipped by a short head on the line.
The second half, while not flawless, was an uproarious display of guts and skill. It was ironic that a couple of missed frees by Podge, who had a gargantuan game, may have cost us victory.
The initial reaction of course is one of heartbreak. However, when calm sets in, one can reflect on a second half when every ounce was heroically and proudly given to that old jersey. You cannot demand more. That is huge compensation when the ultimate prize eludes you.

Hard luck to the Kerry hurlers. A powerful performance that wasn't rewarded with a better result. Kerry undone by a Dublin official, good to know its not just football where it happens. Randy as far as I Know the ref is from Clare. I fully understand if Clare disowned him

Brilliant post 👍 So disappointed to lose and yet so proud of our hurlers boys yesterday, losing a hat trick of All-Ireland B' Championship Finals is hard to take. To score 3-24 in a game and still lose. With a full panel like we had in the last 2 years, I've absolutely no doubt at all, we would have beaten Antrim yesterday, but that conjecture is all yesterday I'm afraid. The Joe McDonagh All-Ireland Championship is a terrific competition, as this year has testified. Took us too long to adjust to the pace and tactics of Antrim, we left ourselves with too much to do. Our goalkeeper needs to be changed, simple as. The referee's free for Antrim for the phantom trip maybe disgraceful, but we did not take our chances neither when we should have. Antrims's intensity in the tackling in packs, forced our physically inferior players to ruck and ground ball, which was a tactic that always suits superior physical sides.we didn't provide the same level of tackling, perhaps this wouod have exuded too much energy out of our lighter players, that needed to be more threatening in freer open spaces. Our huge comeback has been a feature this year, I thought it was a fantastic attitude to have, we've won lots of admirers and neutrals. Now, we need to give a very strong account of ourselves in our more than likely last game of 2022, in Tralee v Wexford, who are superior to Antrim, that there is no doubt about. Let's get out there to Austin Stack Park next Saturday, turn up and make it as awkward for the Strawberry boys from the Model County as we can, and display our true appreciation to our hurlers. They absolutely 💯 deserve 👏 our unwavering support. Ciarraí Abú

Ah yes the comeback was superb and never say die attitude. I'm around long enough to remember our footballers dropping the heads when going behind and showing no fight. None more so as all ireland champions showing no fight whatsoever v Meath in 2001 losing by 15 points and only scoring one point in 2nd half. I could understand if the hurlers did it yesterday but they did nt and showed courage and mental strength. Bravo!

very surprised no scrutiny on the Kerry peno - clear slap by 2 players and not one card.
Kerry were getting on top, a black card would have been huge. similarly, the black card for Kerry came when we were getting on top again.

The comebacks against Offaly and Antrim were great but both resulted in a one point loss. Ahead of the visit of Wexford, Molumphy is going to have to devise a setup that will prevent us being carved open for goals as both Offaly and Antrim did.

Ahead of the visit of Wexford, Molumphy is going to have to devise a setup that will prevent us being carved open for goals as both Offaly and Antrim did. Yes, we need to batten down the hatches early doors in matches Also, we need our best 15 on the pitch from the start for these matches especially against Wexford next Saturday. Jordan Conway was just sublime when he came on, Maurice O'Connor had a point and made a few scores and got 2 goals v Offaly. Both streets ahead of a few of the forwards who are starting. Bringing them on when you are a dozen points down is just leaving them too much to do. I hope Daniel Collins is fit for next Saturday as we are light in terms of strength of depth in the panel, he looked injured going off. I feel Mackessey and Shane Conway had quiet matches by their own standards, we will need them in top form to take the match to Wexford The two Boyle's showed yet again what warriors they are, and I hope Mikey stays on another year. He may be a veteran but has so much to offer still and I think we will win the McDonagh next year. Just need to strengthen the panel a bit over the winter. I feel there is a talent within the county to come on board to do just that Credit to Molumphy, this Kerry team is playing a good brand of hurling, with spirit and are very fit. However, physically we are light and this was a factor in Antrim imposing themselves on Kerry early on. Antim really are a big team. II dont know where they get them all and it may be that they are just a few years ahead of us in terms of s & c Anyways, plenty of positive commentary on the standard of our hurling yesterday which is great for the promotion of the game in Kerry. well done to all the players and management

The one big thing for me is that we need other options to win puck outs. Antrim used the hurley to flick the high ball away from the hand of Podge Boyle and swept up the breaks. They knew that curtailing him in winning primary was crucial. The two OLeary brothers and Barry oMahony would provide those options next year if they got involved.
I am told Fionan Mackessy carried an injury into the game.
The Joe McDonagh cup is a super competition now. Looking forward to next year already.

The Joe McDonagh cup is a super competition now. Looking forward to next year already. It's going to be some battle in McDonagh 2023. Laois will be looking to go straight back up. Offaly and Carlow weren't too far away from making the final this year. Down had a good league and won in Tralee. They had to beat Meath then so secure their McDonagh status. Kildare were a step above everyone in the Ring. Meath might be the same in next year's Ring. While there has been a bit of discussion around McDonagh qualification to the provincial championships, the boundary from McDonagh to Ring seems a bit severe. If the McDonagh finalists were not being rewarded with a preliminary quarter-final, I'd be in favour of an 8 team McDonagh. After 7 group games, top 4 into the semi-finals, with the top 2 having home advantage.

The two O'Leary's did not play in the County Championship for Abbeydorney in 2021 owing to injury and the injuries were not minor I believe The 2022 County Championship will tell us if they are back playing We certainly do need a few more bigger men in the middle third of the pitch especially midfield and in the half forward line

The Offaly match was €10. Great value for a cracking game. They should continue that pricing! :-)

I know a right few from Wexford will travel and make a night out of it in Kerry. The key is not to concede early goals like we have been doing, they might have to put Martin Stackpoole back into goals for this one. If we were only 5 or 6 points down at half-time to Wexford you never know what would happen in the second half as Kerry seem to be finishing very strong in games. In saying all that, Wexford are going to be a serious serious step up in standard in championship hurling. Rory O'Connor and Lee Chin are two of the best forwards in Ireland.

Look I think a bit of reality is needed with the hurlers.Realistically I don't think we are going to beat Wexford. Its only a few weeks ago they beat Kilkenny. However as an earlier poster said if we can try not concede early goals and are not too far behind at half time we might just rattle them.If we get a good crowd in and egg them on they might make the Wexicans nervous and then maybe just maybe.oh im starting to dream now.Anyway I just hope they give a good account of themselves and regardless of the result Kerry hurlers have done the county proud this year.

Absolutely Ciarraimick. I fully concur with everything you've stated there. Need to make these Strawberry boys run dry of their juice a bit. Fantastic opportunity to see top tier hurlers playing in Tralee. This does not happen everyday. I just hope it's not going to be a repeat of the horror show that was March 6th 2016. That day was the official upgrade opening of Austin Stack Park. We played Wexford in the league. They hockeyed us by 22 points!in a Division 1(B) Tempestuous football match afterwards v Donegal with 'breakhand gate'. I fear this happen to us again next Saturday. We'll need to be more conservative with defending, it will not be as exciting as our games v Offally and Antrim in recent weeks.

Wexford came third in Leinster but are now better off than Galway.
Assuming they account for Kerry which they should, they will play a Clare team who may be as flat as a pancake after yesterdays huge game. If they beat Clare they would then play KK (who they beat already this summer) in the semi final.
Galway will have to beat Cork (assuming they beat Antrim) and then Limerick to get to the final.
Huge chance for Wexford really and i cant see them taking things lightly v Kerry. They already got a wakeup call v Westmeath in that drawn game.
Kerry may be a bit deflated after Saturday. I hope its a close game and Kerry give it a good go.

2pm is an early start!!! The Down and Offaly games were 1pm! I was able to pay at the gate. I like the early games but yeah, not for everyone. The word on the street is that Antrim and Kerry have both been out on the town the last few nights. Is this a reflection of apathy for the preliminary quarter-finals after the McDonagh campaign? If Kerry are taking the Wexford match seriously, I hope for at least the fright we gave Limerick in 2003.

The drawback then is the 1 week turnaround. There was an option on the table for the McDonagh finals to be played after the preliminary quarter-finals. It didn't gain traction however so the current imperfection was agreed upon.

The Kerry hurlers are back training tonight and have a recovery session in Banna beach tomorrow night and training again Thursday night.
They will be well up for a cut off Wexford.
After a huge effort against Antrim thry needed to blow off a bit of steam or they would be flat as pancakes next Saturday.
I am really looking forward to this match I must say.

Fast-starting Kerry camogie team see off Carlow in second round of the intermediate championship
Jimmy Darcy
June 06 2022 02:42 PM
ALL IRELAND INTERMEDIATE CAMOGIE CHAMPIONSHIP
Carlow 2-6
Kerry 0-14
Their male counterparts earned deserved plaudits around the country for playing their part in an absolute thriller of a McDonagh Cup Final.
Kerry’s camogie team don’t get quite the same attention, but they very much proved last weekend that they have just as much grit and guile, seeing off Carlow for their second win on the trot in the All Ireland Intermediate Championship.
Just like in last week’s compelling win over Laois, Kerry made a bright start, with Patrice Diggin grabbing possession and booming over with pinpoint accuracy straight from the throw-in. Julianne O’Keeffe neatly finished off a good Kerry move a minute later.
Kerry were pressing hard on Carlow’s puck-outs and it was paying early dividends as Caoimhe Spillane made it 0-3 to 0-0. Three good scores from three attacks – you can’t really ask for a better start.
Carlow, a very good side in their own right, were struggling under the early blitzkrieg by a ravenous Kerry. Ciara Quirke opened their account with a free, but Kerry cancelled that out instantly with a superb score from livewire Amy O’Sullivan.
Carlow were beginning to settle, though, with Ciara Quirke (f) and Emily Doyle bringing them back within touching distance.
In fairness, they had much more of the play now but yet again the Kerry defence were outstanding, especially Sara Murphy as the linchpin at full-back, mopping up attacks and coolly re-distributing possession to her outfield players.
Amy O'Sullivan, who was the best player on the pitch over the full hour, clipped over another beauty to nudge Kerry two points clear. However, disaster struck as Kerry uncharacteristically failed to clear a loose ball.
Carlow’s Emma Lillis swooped for a goal that undid all of Kerry’s hard work and put the home side in front for the first time, 1-3 to 0-5. That lead didn’t last long as Jackie Horgan swept over a free to restore parity between the sides.
Both sides were hitting top gear now and scores were very hard-earned on both sides. This was real intensity – no quarter asked or given on either side. Ciara Quirke pointed from play to put Carlow in front, but Jackie Horgan collected herself after receiving treatment for a hard but accidental collision and swung over the resultant free.
Ciara Kavanagh and Ciara Quirke (f) gave Carlow the advantage, but Katie O’Dwyer’s hard work and determination paid off with another free by Jackie just before the break.
Half-time: Carlow 1-6 Kerry 0-8
It was Carlow’s turn to make a lightning start as Ciara Quirke struck for a goal. Kerry needed to respond and did so in fine style.
Rathmore dynamo Danielle O’Leary and Katie O’Dwyer led the way for the Kingdom as they took charge. Patrice Diggin started the fight-back with a good score.
Jackie Horgan was proving a real thorn at the focal point of attack and knocked over two good points. Kerry were in full flight now and Amy O’Sullivan made it four points on-the-trot – 0-12 to 2-6, and every Kerry player was rising magnificently to the challenge.
None more so than dual player O’Leary, who left players scattered in her wake with a great driving run before slipping off to Jackie Horgan to put Kerry in front.
Carlow were bringing on fresh legs as they sought to get a toehold on the game but Ciara Moloney and Liz Houlihan gave equal impetus to Kerry.
Fittingly, Jackie Horgan had the last score of the day to secure a crucial and very hard-fought victory by Kerry against all the odds.
CARLOW: Catherine Kavanagh; Sarah Jane Burke, Rachel Breen, Aine Ryan; Orla Kavanagh, Kate Garry Murphy, Keeva Collins; Ciara Kavanagh (0-1) Eimear Byrne, Emily Doyle (0-1); Emma (1-0) , Ciara Quirke (1-4,3f's), Eibhe Lawler
KERRY: Emma Lawlor, Elaine Ryall, Sara Murphy, Michelle Costello, Sarah Lawlor, Patrice Diggin (0-2), Rachel McCarthy, Aoife Behan, Danielle O'Leary, Amy O’Sullivan (0-3), Katie O'Dwyer, Julianne O'Keeffe (0-1), Caoimhe Spillane (0-1), Jackie Horgan (0-7, 3f) , Kate Buckley Subs: Ciara Moloney for K Buckley, 46, Liz Houlihan for S Lawlor, 50
REFEREE: Ciarán Groome (Offaly)

So here we are in 2022. Kerry, through finishing in the top 2, finally get to take on an illustrious opponent. Galway's visit to Tralee in the 2017 league was probably the last high profile visit in league or Championship. Galway would go on to win the All-Ireland that year.

Some very good stats there, nice to take on some of the big guns. Since the inception of the Munster Hurling league in 2016 Kerry have played Limerick, Clare, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford on quite a few occasions and as stated by yourself above have played Galway, Limerick, Wexford etc in the Division 1b league in previous years. Our lads have had a nice exposure to top level albeit not at championship pace. The aim for 2023 has to be to win Division 2a, we really need our lads hurling in Division 1 and staying up there. The McDonagh cup will follow suit once we get that exposure at a higher level.
