Paul is away off his game and no one know it better than himself but he is receiving fierce abuse out there from opposing players and I know it’s not the kerry way but someone needs to address this with the referees Burn in for Mc Carthy was a huge improvement he caused All kind s of problems for Monaghan with the accurate kick pass combined with his running /ball carrying game That’s two out of 6 forwards below par and apparently consistently so That’s needs looking at Darren a good option to come in I’d back him any day for a 20 minute role no prob do you think Darren would have taken on his man if he was in JOD s position late in the game ? ? I think he would have dropped his shoulder and drove on Darren just hasn’t been getting the minutes and any he’s got he has done very well I don’t think JOD decision to recycle was totally wrong either there was no way he was winning a free from that Ref And at least he did not lose possession. But we do expect more from him Donie Buckley must be unemployed now that Mayo is out do you think he could take a session or two on how to tackle like Mayo and not be giving away soft frees to a flopping / Falling / Diving player where you show your hands to the ref as the flopper is going to ground And similarly maybe we could do a few kick out strategy Sessions with some recognized expert in this specialty Donie along with Jerome Stack were both in Clones yesterday as spectators - both would be great to have in our back room team!

Guys closer to the club scene than me say Kevin mc is a corner forward and has been doing a great job there for the club. It is hard to see that he would be effective at inter county level in this position, given he does not seem a confident shooter.

It would be refreshing if Kerry threw open the gates of Fitzgerald Stadium and gave the people two weeks of football, a mini festival of the game. It might do them all the world of good instead of being stuck in that sterile soulless lab behind closed doors. There is nothing worse than being two *ing serious and poker faced all the time. Release the Kerry footballing soul for a few weeks and come what may after that.

Seen a few on hoganstand saying Clifford’s prowess is affecting Geaney and JOD but IMO I’d disagree as it’s not like clifford is selfish or anything and his decision making is excellent. They might need coaching as a trio but once they start firing and linking together it will be cool. Donoghue isn’t the same animal. He’s like a jockey who’s lost his nerve. Gets to the point where he’s just about to go past his marker or to shoot and he backs down at the last second. Lacking confidence. He’s not the same cheeky, buzzing player. When you play Donaghy at 14, it’s him plus one other. There ain’t room for two lads beside him. We won all Irelands in the past when it was Donaghy plus Gooch. We won in 14 with Donaghy isolated with Geaney. It’s a Donaghy Clifford combo now. The funny thing is people forget how lethal Clifford is in the air. He actually doesn’t need to play off anyone....in time lads will be playing off of him. As regards Donaghy, he’s a great man, he’s not immune to playing poorly but it won’t be from the lack of trying. He keeps teams honest, he gets the most out of his teammates around him.

Sure no other counties see their team train! Maybe I just don't get the tradition and in that case I have to hold up my hands. Otherwise I am completely perplexed. The sense of entitlement is unreal. It is the players that do all the work and the hard running. Maybe one night wouldn't kill them but on the other hand that is a night they can't train properly.

I just cant fathom the fascination with us having open training sessions- whats the driver? If anything it was idiotic to carry it on for as long as we did

I'm all for playing in form players and Tony Brosnan is one of the best around, worth a place on the bench at least.

I think this would be a good thing also, I appreciate that it is unorthodox by the modern day coaching rule book. But why do we always have to be followers? Clifton of Dublin was the first goalie I saw taking scorable freekicks, a month later Brendan Kealy was doing it. The same man invented the short kickout, everyone followed. We are Kerry FFS why not be brave enough to do something different. I really think that there would be a massive lift in the mood of everyone in the squad, and supporters. God knows there's no danger of revealing any tactics anyway when they're after playing 140 minutes of football without revealing any! They have this notion of the Kerry animal supporter, well they could help themselves here.

Hopefully Kerry can disappoint Monaghan like Hilda disappointed Patrick Kavanagh. In Tiernach’s Park Of a Summers day We’ll face the Farney blue Their strength and flair Could weave a snare And beat us by 1-2 We’ll face the danger But we’ll live To fight another day And I said let James Have one of his better games And Clifford get 6 from play Very good indeed. To prove it wasn't a fluke you've got twelve days to do as good a job on Christy Moore!

In a game of inches it would be utter madness to have open doors at training.

Kerry were flying in the Munster Final. Played great stuff. Cork played traditional football and the better footballers in Kerry ''did the devil'' Playing Galway and Monaghan are a different proposition though, and Leadership and nous on the side line are imperative here, and sadly it has been lacking. It has been been said by many many knowledgeable people here that there was no sense in not playing Donaghy in Croke Park last weekend. He would have made the difference, and we could have got a draw. The management made the wrong call here, as they did in the rain sodden final when Dublin won the 1st of their 3 in a row. He is ideal for this type of game, as you cannot defend against it, you cannot plan for his reach, and on top of that he is a great leader of the team. Some players, showed great fight and resilience in Clones, others seemed lost, sucked into systems that that they were not capable of dealing with. Kickouts. Our own and theirs. We were obliterated. Theirs first. Great Keeper and kicker of a ball that Rory Beggan is, our intensity to the breaking ball is not what it should be. As a man who goes coursing, big dogs can press the hare, and our 'big dogs' can only look in while the hares run off with the ball. No intensity in midfield as a result. Need a stockier, faster dog, Paul Galvin type who will fight toe to toe with the stocky Farney men. And we have options, but are these options too pure as footballers to fight for the hard inches, Michael Burns, Kevin McCarthy, Stephen O Brein. To my mind, White, Morley, Crowley are these ideal types. We need this aggression against these tough opponents. Our own kickouts. With such good fielders, we win so little. Breaking down the ball to each other never happens. The opposition smother us with pressure, and break it down to themselves. Yesterdays battle was lost, or nearly lost due to Midfield ineffectiveness. Murphy or Kelly can't be blamed here. Coaching, horses for courses. Conor McManus, all great teams need scoring forwards, Monaghan unfortunately for them only have one, and while he is a great one, his uniqueness in the Monaghan forward line as the only scoring threat was the reason they did not win yesterday. While their dirty ball winners, were not scorers, ours Scorers are not dirty ball winners. Yet Kerry, with all the experience and guile we claim to have, with all the All Ireland medals we have supporting our fame, isolated Mark Griffen on Conor McManus for the entire first half, and he after giving notice of his intent within the first 2 minutes to dispatch a goal when stealing a 4 to 5 yard gap on Griffen. Last year Shane Enright was similarly exposed. Look when a fella is too good for you, or too good for anybody, what can you do, you can only do your best yourself, but the team needs to work to avoid the giving this Marque player the space they thrive on. That's the outfield lads job. I have refered to Donaghy earlier. He moved in and out to cause chaos and make room for his inside forwards in rotation. Yet his team mates didn't seem to know he was in when he was in. Only towards the end, when the game was all but lost did we try and get it into him. He seems to only get a free, when he is physically attacked with a sledge hammer, ( Referees take note) but he is an unique asset that we have, and yet don't use. Lot of talk about Geaney loosing form. He was brilliant in Cork only a few weeks ago. Clifford overshadowing him only poppycock. He is a clumsy tackler, and he is doing this work out the field unsuccessfully, when he is out to leave room inside for Clifford/Donoghue or Donaghy, as its Fitzmaurices pleasure to appoint. I think this in an out role does not suit him, or he has yet to get accustomed to it. He might fire yet. Clifford and him are very much the same type player, yet Clifford is staying more inside, getting the few scores and doing our scoreboard and his confidence the world of good. Yet both need to improve on their tackling if we are to beat these defensive type teams. Football is not all about skill. Their is effort, and sweat and doggedness and sheer bloody mindedness. You need them all to win an All Ireland now. In days gone by, and this thinking still pervades today, that the class forwards were removed from the workload, the others did the donkey work, with the class forward slotting over the scores as necessary, but in the ever increasing intensity of the modern Game, you can't have fancy footballers only, you need to work your socks off, win your own ball, make your own space, and turn over like a demon.Fast Fit men playing football, and the faster and fitter you are the better, is the main component to break even, and skill will seal the deal. There is no way, other than Beggan and McManus would any of the Monaghan Side match any Kerry player for skill, but for speed, strength and determination, they are more than a match for most of them. It takes a few years for lads to build up the physical prowess to cope, and while Clifford is an absolute prince of a footballer, he will need to develop further his speed and strength if he is to make the most of his wonderfull skill.
Hope that Galway pull out the stops against Monaghan to ensure they top the group, and we do the Business in Killarney, so that we can have a crack off the Dubs. The more games the better for this group, I hope the Management get their act together. I think we have the players to beat any team, but our tactics and team selections, given that some of our players are so specialist, need to improve. Get more rounded footballers, or select the correct blend of players to win on tight pitches, with refs, and ball boys, and conditions( as were in Croke Park) conspiring against you.
Monaghan outplayed us yesterday in general play, yet needed a few points from the ref, abnormal free taking from the Superb Beggan, and a master class from McManus to get a draw, though in truth the deserved to win by 2 or 3. This should be something to build on. We have more to learn and improve on that any team.
Come on the Kingdom

Superb article and really succeeds in pointing out some fairly obvious issues that are affecting us. We need a more realistic defensive system, a better kick out strategy and a proper play maker. It's no use having 3 ball carriers in the half forward line if all they are doing is carrying the ball into the space where Clifford & Geaney should be making their runs to. I dont expect too much change however and would imagine that we will get more or less the same starting team & tactics against Kildare. As dramatic as it sounds - this is probably the most frustrated that I have ever felt as a Kerry supporter

People have a lot of romantic notions about how we should play- I want us to play nice football but also to play a system that both maximises the characteristics of our players & our chances of winning. I'd love to see a playmaker at 11- someone that could pick out a pass. I would say Geaney but I'd be loath to remove him from the inside line

Brilliant analysis. The best i have read in ages Brilliant article alright, I think we have gone from one extreme to another. For the past few years we had no scoring threat from the HF line to having one now that's purely attack minded. But and here's the thing, Should we go with the idea that everyone else is right and we are outdated or should we try and implement our own game that others will try and copy? Personally I think with Morley out it has been a huge loss at 6 and maybe we wouldn't have looked as exposed if he was fit. Personally I'd have Morley & G Crowley in our team and we'd look a lot steadier. We can get the balance right without resorting to how others play the game.

John Kennedy hit nail on head on the wireless tonight 1) we need a stopper of a centre back to hold position and not go wandering like Peter Crowley, he suggested Morley which wouldn't be bad idea. Gavin Crowley could also do job
2) he also suggested we need new midfield pairing as it not working out for current two Maher was poor v GalwAy but did good yesterday so I'd give him go with a wild card selection of Mark Griffin
Is there certain players that are undropable on this team no matter how bad they play as they are pets of eamon, namely David Moran Peter Crowley Paul Murphy

Him and Morley fully fit have to start in a back 6. What has happened to G Crowley since his injury? Has he played club games recently? Of those 3, P Crowley does not deserve his place. Morley and Foley back next day will result in him being dropped I would think. I agree Moran did not have a good day vs Monaghan or Galway. He came into it more in 2nd half in Clones but I would not be too radical yet.

jason foley should be back for the semi final hopefully if we do make it through(they may not risk him against kildare) and Killian young is available for the kildare game i assume?

As others have pointed out we need someone ferocious and gritty to win the breaks. Paul is ideal for this. This works perfectly as we have a ready made replacement for Paul in the half back line in Tom O'Sullivan.
