I was on location and while much has already been aired on here, supporters will have individual overall assessments.
We can all criticize management but in doing so we need to put forward alternatives and I bet others will shoot these down too. In any event I think we now need to get behind our heros as an extended team and like other counties do - Donegal are brilliant at it, through thick and thin, to a man. If management changes are needed then it won't happen until end of season anyway and let's face it, we haven't lost Sam yet!
The younger lads were amazing and along with Star ('The Big Maan' in deep Ulster brogue) - incidentally he should have gotten an early penalty when the ref was blindsided from jersey pulling when Kieran was running into the Monaghan square. Clifford was also head butted and the town side umpires should never ever again be in a position of discretion - balls were purposely kicked onto the pitch to disrupt our kick-outs yet they refused to fetch them, standing in defiance of the amazing sportsmanship of what was more of an occasion than a mere event, and as was Omagh the previous evening. The Kildare/Galway game officials would also have the ref award that penalty although no guarantee Deegan would oblige as he had a bad day, a very bad one - maybe the umpires took the lead from him? Drew Wiley also carried the ball so far in the dying moments that Brexit would have him presenting his passport a few times.
From my Omagh observations I think Dublin are beatable but then again a lot can change in 6 weeks and of course that also applies to their challengers, including us. If you have to nearly die to live then I'd be having a bit of Padraig Power's 6/1 on us.
I purposely positioned myself behind Cluxton in Omagh and was closer to him than most of the players as it is a very intimate park - low perimeter fencing, etc. What he does is simple but the implementation is truly spectacular - I recall a few occasions when even I was sure where he would kick to and he appears to be more successful with some targets e.g. telepathy with James McCarthy. Coaches and goalies need to take a closer look for themselves and those who understand what is going on will profit. I am sure many haven't yet picked up on what precisely is going on because if they had they would be more successful in adopting the tactic and I see no evidence anywhere.
The Clones game dwarfed Omagh and not because Kerry was on show - spectators were exhausted and that wasn't just Monaghan deflation. Both were spectacular occasions, probably the best weekend of football I ever experienced and I have had some good wans. All we now need is for the GAA to cop on re their nonsense with PUC, otherwise the non-GAA community will rightly point to the public funding we receive and it is shameful it has come to this - reminds of the ban of old.
Though Moran played a massive role at MF this station needs recalibration and of course KD was our leader as always - a giant in the true sense and proof positive is that he is detested by 31 counties, haunted by even seeing him, let alone anywhere near the ball, almost comical at times.
We suspect pundits may have a brief but Colm O'Rourke's virtual condemnation of us was appalling - started before the game when he said that Donaghy would be a disaster and then post match insisted we didn't improve from Galway - ah maybe he was feasting his eyes on that new gal when The Big Maan got that touch from the shrapnel to make the goal - I mean it isn't as if KD is so small that you could miss him Colm, he is The Big Maan after all! Colm also insists the score board was tampered with as it said either team was as good as the other while Meath's big man said there should only be one county on it.
Can we win Sam? - well yes! We are within reach but it will require a lot of honesty and flexibility by our leaders and all of who did it before and on more than one occasion.
Up the Kingdom!

Back to the kickouts. The best keeper in the county is playing goals for Kilcumman and the second best is playing fullforward for Rathmore. Nothing personal but Brian Kelly is arguably the 4th best in the county. He himself looked rusty yesterday, he was nearly caught for a McManus point attempt. If they think Murphy is the long term solution in goals they should just stick with him. The chopping and changing of keepers every year mid championship is doing nobody any favours. Stick with Murphy, don’t saddle him with the added pressure of kicking frees, let him concentrate on his bred and butter of kickouts. He’s an inexperienced player and free taker at this level, every time he misses a free it has a negative impact on his confidence

Thanks for reports from all who travelled. There is only so much one can see on TV.
Radio Kerry suggested this morning that Shane Murphy was injured. If true , that would explain an otherwise unfathomable selection.
About Jason being taken for a lot of points by Daniel Flynn in the NFL , it must be remembered that young man had only a couple of senior outings at that stage. One of our brightest prospects.
People on here who were at the match claim that Mark played at CHB In the second half. Would be interesting if management start him there against Kildare.
Jack Barry is an enigma. Some people say he lacks pace but earlier in his senior career he often went on a solo and seemed to devour the pitch . John Divllly, manager of UCD , said in the Irish Examiner around Sugerson cup time that Jack had the ability to be one of the best midfielders around. What has gone wrong? He certainly is playing with no confidence , content to lazily lay off the diminishing amount of possession he is winning these days.
Anthony showed a a little form when he came on. What of Sean O'Shea for midfield? Kevin McCarthy on the forty?
I can see Galway and Monaghan playing out a low scoring draw the next day! In any case, our goal should be to beat Kildare playing well. If that happens I will not be heartbroken if we fail to qualify. Conversely, suffer a defeat and it is nothing but despair.
PS Mickmack says that KD is the greatest Kerry leader he has seen. Ah sure, I nominated him for captaincy several years ago regardless of who won the County but nobody listens to old people any more. A leader and a warrior with no love coming his way from referees.

Just to answer a few queries: 1 Shane Murphy took a full part in the warm up - he kept goal while Kelly practiced kicking - Shane did not look in any way injured. 2. Mark Griffin did indeed play centre back in the 2nd half - did well breaking forward. 3. Midfield - not sure what’s up with Barry but Griffin would be a good fit at midfield - he is strong, fast and very willing to break. I cannot but agree regarding Donaghy - 35, leading, coaxing - opposition detest him for all he brings. A travesty that he was denied the honour of leading Kerry out in 2015 as captain.

Before the match I was worried about Monaghan getting an early lead and us chasing it in vain for the rest of the match. That's what happened in Inniskeen and until the last minute it was what I thought would happen again yesterday. The early goal was the difference but Monaghan couldn't get a big enough lead for safety and that is why the skill and heroics of David Clifford (and don't forget the earlier Maher point which was equally vital) were enough to keep the flickering flame of Championship survival burning.
Frustrating for Kerry supporters on the sideline to watch but we were served a much better dish than the previous week - not that it could have got much worse. Changing the goalkeeper was inexplicable and the new look back line made scarcely a difference. But starting Donaghy was the right call and we have to ask why he didn't make an appearance the previous week.
Watching the Monaghan goal from the sidelines I couldn't believe how naieve we were but seeing it on television later, there was little we could do in the circumstances. The ultra long kick-out to a skilful forward isolated on on one in front of goal is hard to beat. This is the response to pushing up on the short kick outs but it requires considerable skill to pull off. Monaghan happen to have that in Beggan and McManus.
As mentioned earlier that goal was the difference between us for most of the match due to a dogged Monaghan team with overwhelming support in the literal cauldron of St Tiernach's Park so we underestimate our achievement of getting out of there with a draw at our peril.
Now we need to beat Kildare by enough but our fate is essentially in the hands of the outcome of the Galway/Monaghan game. A draw or a Monaghan victory will see us out regardless of how well we perform the next day out. Galway will want to top the group and avoid Dublin in the semis but a draw will be enough for that.
We must play our best team against Kildare. Arguably two out of three changes for this match were wrong. Time for better calls?

Subs: M Burns for McCarthy (half-time); J O’Donoghue for Geaney (49 mins); B Ó Beaglaoich for Griffin (51); D O’Sullivan for O’Shea (54); A Maher (0-1) for Barry (63); Geaney for O’Sullivan (71). A part from PG coming back on, all the subs made the team smaller in height. This was manna from heaven for the Monaghan keeper who had mismatches in height all over the place to choose from. He targeted Murphy lack of height too with is kickout. Burns won no breaking ball so no better than McCarthy on that score. Darren got one touch in the 20 mins he was on. I didn't make my point very well above so i will have another cut at it. Now that they have introduced the 20 metre rule for kickouts, the top keepers are looking for mismatches in height between their own half backs and their own half forwards and the men marking them. This is the way the game will evolve and not good news for Burns, JOD, Darren etc. In other words, you are going to have to have 6 footers in the middle 8. I think the two games v Galway and Monaghan shows how reliable the league has been and how unreliable the Munster championship is. Monaghan actually beat the Dubs. Galway drew with the.

It might be interesting to note too Veteran, that Marc Ó Sé suggested on OTB that Donnchadh Walsh might be an option at midfield for 40-50mins as he has the legs for it (not pace but an engine). I think Griffen is an option too. Kildare are powerful around the middle of the field with huge men - do we stick with Jack B as a starter?

I would go back to Shane Murphy I think overall hes a better keeper. I agree try Griffin in midfield he has the legs. Hes not full back at this level.
Moran and Barry are playing poorly one of them has to go to the bench. If we could get back Morley Foley and Enright that would definitely help the back line.
I would start Burns with O'Shea and Darren. Clifford Donaghy and Geaney. Maybe try Morley and Griffin at midfield. I think James O'Donoghue has lost form and not playing well. Good to come off the bench.
I think if you had McCarthy O'Brien and Barry coming off the bench it might benefit themselves and the team.
I would go if all were fit.
Murphy
Tom Sullivan Foley Enright(Shanahan if he's not fit.)
Murphy Crowley White
Morley (Moran if not fit) Griffin
Burns Darren O'Shea
Clifford Donaghy Geaney
Kelly O'Donoghue O'Brien McCarthy Barry G.Crowley O'Beaglaoich Keane Barry O'Sullivan Daithi Casey Tony Brosnan Cormac Coffey.
Maher Donnacha and Fionn not good enough for the bench right now.
I would bring in Barry O'Sullivan Daithi Casey Tony Brosnan and Cormac Coffey to the bench.

Chopping and changing players destroys them. Still don't get the rational for dropping Burns after a hugely successful NFL and Munster championship for him. DC's goal only glosses over severe cracks that run all over the team and line. Shane Ryan for example needs to be blooded asap and who ever takes over next year needs to assault next years NFL with all the young players with vigour. I cant say I really want to see these young players going up to Croker in a few weeks time to get mauled by the Dubs, the team isn't right at the moment, same as last year.

I can't remember the last time Darran did anything impressive in a Kerry jersey.
The suggestion that we travelled to Clones with an injured GK on the bench as laughable if it's true as if it's false.

The biggest problem with Barry is the same as with all the others they are not allowed play their normal game. Whether its defensive tactics or everything is over analysed they are in some way inhibited. Geaney is also a victim of the same.
Nacrocaigh - Darran's race is run. He didn't feature yesterday when he came on.

I was never in the "Kerry will win Sam this year" camp, too soon for this new squad to find their feet. Next year or the year after I reckon we'll be some outfit, I will be very happy to be proved wrong but I just cant see it. The over blowing of some of the young lads scares me. Some fierce hyped up statements about Clifford again today and while no one can deny his talent at minor level the adult game is a lot different. In minor he was a big fish in a small pond, now he's swimming with sharks and is getting singled out by opposition for special treatment. I have no doubt he will grow into his role and will be a talent for years to come and look forward to seeing him do so.
Look at Con O Callaghan who has become pretty anonymous with Dublin this year, possibly due to over playing in both football and hurling and the expectation which has been put on his young shoulders.
It's probably just the Mammy in me but I think we need to nurture these young lads and their obvious talent, maybe a buddy scheme with more senior panel members to help them deal with the rigours of Senior Inter county life.
BTW does anyone agree that James seems to be guarding himself and is less willing to take on scores he would have before his injuries. IMHO the old James would have taken that last shot and scored the winner rather than coming back out.

I'd bring Johnny Buckley back into the fold. I actually met him on the killarney-Kilorglan road last week. Funnily enough he was reversing backwards down the road. Think he was doing a party piece for the tourists on the back of the bus. When I passed him out there must have been 10-15 crates of baby cans of Heineken in the back of the bus. Surreal stuff You're a poor man's Ballymac999.

He won't come back. He's playing well with Crokes. I think he would do a good job on the 40 with Burns and Sean O'Shea. Tony Brosnan is flying for Crokes. Scoring all round him. I would bring him in now it's not too late.

Team I would go for v Kildare (if all fit and available) 1. Shane Murphy 2. Ronan Shanahan 3. Jason Foley 4. Tom Sullivan 5. Paul Murphy 6. Gavin Crowley 7. Gavin White 8. Tadgh Morley 9. David Moran 10. Mike Burns 11. Paul Geaney 12. Sean O Shea 13. David Clifford 14. Kieran Donaghy 15. Kevin McCarthy
I’d love to see geaney at 11 because to me he looks like a player completely devoid of confidence and this could be an ideal game for him to get on a pile of ball and run the show,
Having Morley at MF and Crowley at 6 gives us options aswell as having McCarthy inside where he could drift out and win loose ball

I've yet to see anything to account for the fascination with Kevin McCarthy that seems to have started around the time he missed the Mayo game last year. Seems like a decent player with some potential but I think Burns has been very hard done by in the last two games to have dropped below him in the pecking order.
Very surprised at the appetite for shoehorning him into corner forward now considering the frequent criticism that he doesn't seem to want to shoot.

McCarthy had much more of an impact on the game when replacing Burns in the Munster Final. He’s also been superb for his club this year. He’s far more of a corner forward or a centre forward than a wing forward. The role he’s asked to play is not suiting his strengths and I would also like to see him in the corner dropping out in front of the front two (Donaghy/Clifford or Geaney/Clifford)
What do you actually do in midfield? Why are they so poor on breaking ball? Where’s the work rate and aggression from Cork gone?
Very interesting reading Aidan O’Rourke’s piece. Basically the game plan is as naive and stupid as it appears to my untrained eyes.

just watching back the game from above now and i notice the monaghan #3 was already booked early in the 2nd half and then later on produced a punch in front of the terrace (i had a great view of it) that went completely unpunished.
how on earth was he left off with that when donaghy got a yellow? about a minute after the Donaghy yellow, Monaghan were awarded a free yet their #23 swung out at sean o shea...massive inconsistency.
Deegan royally messed Kerry about yesterday and should not get another big game for rest of the year.

Seen a few on hoganstand saying Clifford’s prowess is affecting Geaney and JOD but IMO I’d disagree as it’s not like clifford is selfish or anything and his decision making is excellent. They might need coaching as a trio but once they start firing and linking together it will be cool.

And you could list many other incidents and inconsistencies - Deegan (however inept or incompetent he was) was not our problem yesterday - Monaghan should have won in a canter but thankfully they have a serious lack of scoring forwards and left us off the hook. A referee is outside our control, lets concentrate on those things in our control and leave the referee mauling to Mayo et al.

Paul is away off his game and no one know it better than himself but he is receiving fierce abuse out there from opposing players and I know it’s not the kerry way but someone needs to address this with the referees Burn in for Mc Carthy was a huge improvement he caused All kind s of problems for Monaghan with the accurate kick pass combined with his running /ball carrying game That’s two out of 6 forwards below par and apparently consistently so That’s needs looking at Darren a good option to come in I’d back him any day for a 20 minute role no prob do you think Darren would have taken on his man if he was in JOD s position late in the game ? ? I think he would have dropped his shoulder and drove on Darren just hasn’t been getting the minutes and any he’s got he has done very well I don’t think JOD decision to recycle was totally wrong either there was no way he was winning a free from that Ref And at least he did not lose possession. But we do expect more from him Donie Buckley must be unemployed now that Mayo is out do you think he could take a session or two on how to tackle like Mayo and not be giving away soft frees to a flopping / Falling / Diving player where you show your hands to the ref as the flopper is going to ground And similarly maybe we could do a few kick out strategy Sessions with some recognized expert in this specialty

Seems like a decent player with some potential but I think Burns has been very hard done by in the last two games to have dropped below him in the pecking order. Very surprised at the appetite for shoehorning him into corner forward now considering the frequent criticism that he doesn't seem to want to shoot. Agree completely- haven’t seen anything from McCarthy yet to suggest that he is upto this level. I think Burns (and a few others) have a bit more about them- I hope I’m wrong and he tears it up in the next few matches but I’m still unconvinced
