Spillane may have got it right this evening with Miriam that Dublin will beat Kerry in the final. We'd take that at the moment...................... If we make final, hope we beat Dublin. No harm in Dublin being favorites....don't mind that at all!!!!

We have played Clare, a poor Cork, and an underwhelming Galway. Two big name counties with teams that were a little damp in the squib area. We are matched with Mayo now, another Connacht team, to play an All Ireland SF. If we get on the next level how tempered, and trialled will we be. Dublin, and especially Tyrone have had a better run, even though their scores reflect a greater dominance. Maybe the super 8 will be an improvement, at least that way there should be some good challengers to prepare teams for the final. How do you reckon the Super 8 will be an improvement and provide more challenging games - the 8 teams that made the QF's are effectively the Super 8 and the QF's showed the level of mis-match in this supposed elite group. The Super 8 simply means more meaningless drivel for TV. We don't know what next year will bring in terms of the top teams. Cork, Galway and a few more teams have potential to close the gap. This super 8 is a stepping stone to getting rid of the provincials and having a proper competition with all teams having equal number of games etc..,

A few Dubs i know see Kerry v Mayo as an irrelevant sideshow I doubt if Jim Gavin does. Dublin have enough to occupy their minds in Tyrone. Say what you like about Brolly but he's a sharp analyst and he thinks Dublin have it all on to beat Tyrone. I happen to agree. Mayo v Kerry is fascinating. Mayo performance v Rossies came out of nowhere, and has thrown a spanner in the works. Otherwise Kerry would be unbackable. Full forward line is Kerrys best, full back line is arguably Mayo's worst. That alone should be enough. But marks have to be awarded for resilience and doggedness, and Mayo cannot be faulted here. Plus physically they can take it to anyone. They finals last year were probably the most physical games ever played. Kerry need to be prepared for a war. But football wise, Kerry should have too much. Also think O'Brien should start, a real handful with his pace and direct running. Kerry for me, if only that it may make getting hands on a ticket for final a slightly easier quest. Mayo supporters are like shower of Dysons, hovering everything up! Of course that is based on the dangerous assumption that Dublin will get there too.

Mayo are always capable of turning on the switch. They particularly seem to like semi finals!

Can i ask you why did Mayo's performance v Roscommon surprise you?
Is this not the way with Mayo.
In 2011, 2012 and 2013 they knocked out the previous years winners
In 2014 they lost an epic semi final replay to the eventual winnersy
In 2015 they went to a replay with the eventual winners....and against Dublin the keeper Clarke got injured and was replaced by Hennelly and Johnny Cooper targeted Seamus OShea and he got a black card...huge loss even though you think Tom Parsons is better!
In 2016... two massive performances in the final and replay after stumbling over the line against Tipp and Tyrone
Not winning the All Ireland does not seem to bother them any more, they just do what it takes to reach the business end and leave it all on the pitch then.
They now have a natural forward in Loftus and Kirby and Coen and Reagen are better optiosn that in previous years as subs. I just cant understand why anyone would read that much into the games with Derry, Cork and Roscommon

I don't think Mayo have planned it this way, no way do you stutter past Derry Clare Cork, get beaten by Galway and need 2 goes at Roscommon and expect to contend strongly. Put it this way, you won't see Kerry or Dublin struggling past that lot. In summary, Mayos median performance has been distinctly average. The replay v Roscommon is an outlier, and may possibly be explained by a Rossie meltdown. If so, Kerry will wipe the floor with them. But if Mayo have genuinely found the key to some fluency, they won't be found wanting in the physical stakes, and Kerry will be in a game.

If i recall correctly, Mayo reached the final of 2016 via unimpressive wins over
Feremanagh by 4 points (dodgy peno to Aiden) Kildare...9 points but Kildare were cat Westmeath by 4 points Tyrone by 1 point... Sean Cavanagh send off Tipp by 5.... Tipp lad black carded early
Not much different in my view between 2016 and 2017 in the way Mayo stumble along doing enough till the big day.
The only reliable touchstone for judging them is how each fared agaist Dublin in 2015 and 2016 and Mayo fared better by a good bit.
This battle will put Dunkirk in the hapenny place

covered earlier in the thread, but I would start Stephen O'Brien
We wont win the all Ireland without more pace in the forwards. We may lost an impact sub but still will have the likes of Barry John, Darren and whoever makes way for O'Brien to bring in. You also have Sheehan, Kevin Mc, Sean O;Shea to look at. Get O'Brien in from the start

I'm a big Stephen O'Brien fan, but I am wondering if the tactic of him being a sub is somewhat necessitated by the amount of cards he picks up? I think one of his weaknesses is that he picks up yellows too easily. He has electric pace and is well able to finish, and I think if he can find that vein of form he could be a goal machine, I've seen him score some great goals at the club level, but his downside when playing for Kerry is he picks up a yellow in a lot of games for sloppy tackling.. It is not even lazy tackling, but he seems to catch a lot of lads high.. I am wondering if the reason Eamonn is opting to keep him for the second half is he can go hell for leather and even if he picks up a yellow he doesn't have to carry it for too long? One problem for me with Kevin McCarthy is he seems to be hesitant to take his own scores.. IF you go with the forwards that started against Galway you've 3 natural long range point takers, and two of them are playing inside.

I am a fan of O'Brien as well. I would have him starting every game. Eamonn knows his value and If (when) we reach the final I am sure he will start.

O'Brien's not good enough to start- he excels coming on late when others are tired and his pace is even more beneficial- but look at his intro against Galway- balls being soloed over his head poor decision making, etc.

A few Dubs i know see Kerry v Mayo as an irrelevant sideshow Mick, I'd imagine they are winding you up! Maybe they also post on the Reservoir Dubs forum. I must ask whether any of them posted up this on the Dubs forum. This Kerry defence can be got at very easily. Ive said a few times here that its one of the poorest Kerry back 6’s I can recall. Griffin Enright and Fitzgerald in the FB line. Morley Crowley and Murphy in the HB line. The only one who’d make our panel would be Murphy. Mayo might take Griffin as their FB thats it really. Killian Young and Lyne as back up are poor options imo.
If Mayo get a run at them from deep Kerry are in trouble. Mayo mightnt need a big scorer inside even. I’ll be having a good nibble and lump at 9/4. Probably even take minus 1/2. Sheeps and lambs and all that.
At the risk of sounding arrogant, I think our SF is the real final.
Despite all this if it comes to pass, I’d pay big money to watch the Kerry crowd moping out of Croker on the third Sept Sunday. Its a sight you can never get sick of really.

Sure look every supporters group has arrogant clowns. I'd agree in that its prob the poorest Kerry backline that I can remember also

True if mayo run from deep they will cause Kerry problems, but the same can be said if Kerry run through the middle at mayo. Mayo and kerry are both week when teams run the ball at them. Mayo in every game this year including league have looked very vulnerable when teams run at them. Mayo will not attack as much because they definitely will be playing a sweeper more than likely Higgins or mcglouglin in front of whoever plays full back for mayo. I think the kickouts in particular mayos could be the key to mayo or kerry winning. Kerry you would imagine will look to push up and force Clarke to kick long where Kerry will have superiority in and around the middle, but whether kerry can track mayo runners in particular diarmuid o Connor will be interesting. Both games should be fascinating and interesting to see the tactics used. However of all the 4 managers left unfortunately we have the worst management by a country mile.

I was told reliably last year that Alan Dillon has too much influence ...

Player power. The guy that replaced Clarke in the drawn game was a club mate of two brothers with a lot of influence in the team. Yes dillon should not be there. Apart from dropping Clarke which was the worst managerial decision ever, mayo failed to look at another full back all year. The full back situation has being our biggest problem we have lost at least 1 all ireland if not 2. Unfortunately g cafferkey is not up to it. He has being cleaned on KD before. Mayo knew that they would be facing Kerry in the semis and KD a ff. So they are going to throw a guy into fb against KD having never played there before. A decent manager would have tried out 2/3 guys there in the league and championship. We have many decent midfielders Parsons, SOS, Barry Moran, Vaughan that should have being given game time at fb. It's ridiculous that we are going into an all ireland semi final against a massive threat in KD and haven't played anyone all year at fb only use calf who unfortunately has never being good enough on the big day at fb. Also management have taken colm Boyle off in a number of games and he has being one of our best players. I also think Andy Moran shouldn't start because he is better coming on when the game opens up due to his lack of pace.
