Don't think he was even on the panel the last day? I doubt he'll be seen this year. Always thought he was underrated even when fit tbh.

I expect Mayo to come out all guns blazing from the start. They are going to go at Kerry right away and we better be ready. It will important for Kerry to score early. A couple of fast early balls into Geaney and Donaghy no messing around. If we could bang an early goal and a point or two. It would put a lot of pressure on Mayo and test their mental toughness.
On the other hand if Mayo get a good start. It will put a lot of pressure on us to get the scores. I think Mayo will push up on us and pressure our backs. A lot like they did against Dublin last year. Kerry will have to move the ball fast. quick ball in. It's the only way to beat them.
I hate the short passing back and forth around midfield drive it into Donaghy and Geaney and James. They can win their own ball and create space to shoot. I agree with you paddymac about Donnacha. A great servant to Kerry but he can't run and catch up to his man anymore. O'Brien and Darren if they start would give you much more pace and will score much more than Mikey Geaney and Donnacha. If we go out with the same team that started against Galway and play the same way we will be well beaten. Mayo won't miss the chances Galway did.
For me it's too hard to call it. Mayo to me have always been a top 3 or 4 team since 2011. Always good to watch and have a lot of talent. The best four teams are left. Dublin and Tyrone should be another great game. No room left now for a poor performance from any of the teams left.

Barry Moran wasn't even togged out on Monday, he was sitting with the injured/extended panel outside of the subs bench. I hardly think they'll put him back in out of nowhere.

I would go 1 Kelly 2 Young 3 Griffin 4 Enright 5 Crowley 6 Morley 7 Murphy 8 Moran 9 Barry 10 O'Brien 11 Buckley 12 Lyne 13 Geaney 14 Donaghy 15 O'Donoghue We need pace and scores from the half forward line to win this one. Jack Barry to play a sweeper role. We need to plug that gap in the midfield half back area. I would tell Buckley to play around the midfield area with Moran. They will probably play two around Donaghy anyway. Maher Donnacha Savage Darren McCarthy Barry John and either Geaney or a back as needed. Nacrocaigh.... Have you seen Lyne play much recently....just wondering what you are basing his selection on. I would have a half forward line of JOD, Buckley and Murphy. Inside line of McCarthy, Donaghy and Geaney. Young at wing back and Shanahan in the corner. But you have to finish with a strong team too in suppose. Kerrygold used a phrase i liked ..."Mayo flicked the switch". Its a day for getting a good start or staying with then. They are capable of filletting a team if they catch fire.

Mickmack, JOD isn't exactly the best man tracker and he tends to get turned over when he isn't doing what he does best and that is shooting on instinct within his scoring radius. One of his top attributes apart from accuracy is his ability to get to top speed in the blink of an eye, his marker may be able to match his speed but they are rarely able to get that yard back before he pulls the trigger. I think he could explode on Sunday week and Geaney could also cause mahem as the Mayo setup will in my opinion be a little too focused in stopping the long ball to Donaghy.
We need speed in the half forward line to track the Mayo halfbacks and Murphy would be a very effective intercepter from his own halfback line so I would be inclined to leave him exactly where he got his MOM award against Galway. Darren, S O Brien and Lyne all have serious pace and we will need at least one of them on that line going forward and covering back. We need to give Rochford as many headaches as possible to keep their running game in check. Donaghy was hit with four high balls in 56 minutes in the last game and we got a return of 1-2 from those four balls, he has to be hit early on Sunday week to unsettle Mayo and make them second guess their tactics. Nothing is more unsettling than chayos in your full backline, so oil the howitzer and light them up early and often I say !!

They could conceivably be as good as they were last year in the two final games against Dublin. In that case they would take serious breaking down over 78 minutes.

I'm not saying he is bad player, far from it. But he, like any player will struggle to impose himself against a massed or blanket defence. He was held scoreless in the 14 final. (I know he was played out the field, but, that was because he would be wasted inside against the massed defence.) Against Tyrone in the 15 semi he didn't score form play either when he was playing closer to goal. Against a massed defence it your half forwards and half backs that will do the heavy lifting from play. And in our case throw Donaghy in there was well. But Mayo for all the talk of tightening up are still porous at the back and hopefully if he's fit the game should suit James. They The way the game is changing James might not have to kick a score. An inside line and James, KD and Geaney will put the fear into any management who will drop at least 2 sweepers allowing Buckley, Moran, SOBrien etc to pick off scores. Fitzy played a clearly unfit James v Galway to keep the defence occupied, not for his output on the day. Mickey Harte was years ahead of his time when he picked Stephen ONeill back in 08 (or 05?) when he was totally unfit. Kerry matched our best defender (Marc) on him and ONeill basically trotted around Croker keeping Marc away from the play while Muggsy and Canavan made hay. How Mayo deal with and set up for the 'Potential' threat of our full forward line will in my view decide the outcome of the game. 2008 was the year, Canavan was gone, Sean Cavanagh ran the show alternating between 12 and 14. O'Neil had left the panel during the year to return for the final. Only Harte could pull that one out of the bag. I don't think too many other panels would see a guy walk straight back in for a final like that.

Think the same team starting against Galway with possible two changes
Killian for Fionn, not sure of position rejig, maybe Morley goes corner back Maybe Mikey might lose out, not sure of replacement - maybe Daz or Lyne but neither have much football played. If Mikey's going well in training I reckon he starts.
I think Donnacha is nailed on to start, his body of work outweighs his pace limitations.
It's hard to see Eamonn putting in lads with very minimal if any Championship game time this year against a Mayo team with plenty of road travelled.
Dorran and Stevie are prize weapons best suited to come from bench, as impact speed players, Either or both starting if not going well would take some sail wind from us

Mickmack - we might be a while hearing from Na Crocaigh after the epic U16 semi final between Stacks and Crokes last night. I look forward to hearing a report on it. The reason that I suggested starting Lyne was to have him there to mark Keegan. Mayos half back line is the platform for most of their attacks against the top teams. He started wing forward, dropping back, in the league final. Took one for the team - if Connolly had got the goal that time it was lights out. I think you suggested starting Savage in the half forward line. The weakest part of Jacks game is hard running, tackling, defensive play. I dont think you could have him in the half forward line at the start of the game, maybe you could at the end . I think people are writing off Donnchadh a bit too quick. Still think he will be one of the first players on the team sheet. James O needs to be played close to the goals. He is a big game player. He has the bit of X Factor you need to win a championship. It was the worst decision of Fitz's managerial career to take him off and leave Gooch on in the 2015 final. James O was having a fine game. I believe Shanahan has gone off the boil so with the other backs we have around its unlikely he'll make the panel. Mayo have started poorly in all their games except the last day. You would think they will be in a better position to start well the next day out, they should be a lot sharper than Kerry. Maybe its down the straight they could be a bit vulnerable in the semi final.

I think it's a bit of an old husbands' tale to say Mayo must have a good start. In recent years they have lost big games where they had a good start, and come back into many big games where they were down a good few scores. One thing you can almost guarantee with them, if they still have it, is they will chase the game down relentlessly, and wear the opposition down to an extent, or drive them back for long spells, especially when behind.

He works as hard as Donnachadha and is a better option for taking a score or coming out to the middle to shore things up there. If Darran or O'Brien come in I think it will be at Donnchadhas expense to be honest. Mayo's half backline can also really only impose themselves as much as we let them. We can either concede the kickout so that we have men back to track the runners or push up and force the long kick but, if we dont win the ball we could be exposed to the runs from deep. In all likely hood we will we see a mix of the two like we have used against dublin sometimes. We will mark zones or space. Try to cheat as it were with 5 of our forwards marking 6 backs for their kickout and press them every so often.

Keegan always marks the the oppositions best forward with the exception of Kerry. He will have a license to attack from the get go. With McLoughlin back as basically a fulltime sweeper in front of our full forward line it will be Paul Murphy's job to curtail him while Donnchadh does his own roaming to a certain extent.

Was Keegan suffering from an acute case of "blackcarditis" against the Rossies. Had he played and picked up a black card would he have missed the semi final. I think so.

Mayo have a vast collection of management minds on the sideline. It will be interesting to see what they collectively come up with for the upcoming semi final.

Donnchadh is a natural worker but is at an age where he is losing a bit of pace. Buckley is an intelligent player and knows that work must be done and so puts in the effort but if a player is trying to go past him, Buckley will stop him twice and foul him the third time - he hasn't the stomach for the fight. I was surprised to hear Colm O'Rourke saying the same thing over the weekend when he said that Buckley wasn't suited to "the open planes of Croke Park". I think Lyne was never a defender and his confidence seems to have suffered from playing there. He never goes on runs because he doesn't know when to and often passes off to a player 2 yards away.

He hasn't the stomach for it. What a stupid comment. That shows me right there how clueless you are about Football. Johnny Buckley was the best player on the field against Galway. He is just as good a fielder if not better than Moran or Maher on his day. He is as good at long range shooting as anyone on the panel and more accurate than most of them. He is a leader a captain. He has Phenomenal work rate. Yea he is a very good tackler and strong too.
One thing you do have in common with O'Rourke. Open your mind before you open your mouth.

I can never understand why some constantly refer to "the open plains of Croke Park" as if it was vastly longer and wider than others. There are several pitches around the country equal to and even longer or wider than Croke Park. Johnny Buckley has demonstrated his ability to cope on several of those, as well as Croke Park.

The not having the stomach for it is well off target for me too.

I dont know if its a management tactic to slow the game down or not. I would say Buckley is a far better tackler as well. How many times has he stripped the ball from an opponent?

I would have been critical of his engine previously as he often tended to have a quite half and a busy half for Kerry (and even for the Crokes too) However he was immense against Galway and my man of the match with his work-rate going all the way to the final whistle.
