Clueless .... Based on what happened three years ago the Kerryman considers the situation to be relevant today . That paper is sadly a poor comparasion of what it once was. Essential reading then is best ignored and left alone now .

Mayo are rated higher than they deserve. They have failed to beat 4 teams in 70 minutes. They did up their game for the replay but Roscommon gave a “startled earwigs” performance which made Mayo look better than they actually are.
Eamonn wants to get to the AIF without any dramatic changes but he wants to be ready for the final. There are only 3 places in doubt – no 9, no 10 and no 12.
Numbers 9 and 12 come under the heading “being ready for the final”. Jack Barry’s speed, mobility and the fact that he upset Fenton in the league final means he will be needed for the final. He needs more experience, especially in Croke Park so that should ensure he gets no 9. Kevin McCarthy has speed and can take the physical hits that Dublin dish out so he will be needed for the final. Likewise he needs experience so he should get no 12.
Donnchadh has done enough so far so Eamonn won't see the need to drop him so he is likely to move to the right and get no 10 jersey. O’Brien is a bit unlucky here and I think he will start if we reach final but he has experience so there is no need to show the lines he would run if started.

Essential reading then is best ignored and left alone now . The Kerryman GAA journalist of the past were insightful and one would look forward to the publication prior and post Kerry matches, however I am not enamoured or enthused by the writings of the present senior staff GAA journalists in that paper since the changing of the guard for a number of years now. It is such a pity from a once great publication but this is just a personal view, long gone are the contributions of Eamon horan and Owen mccrohan.

Can't understand where doubts about Donnacha are coming from.
I believe he will start and rightly so. He rarely plays below par. Whispers of his demise are rash.
He will play a vital role against Mayo and is a key player in my view.
In terms of the half forward line I think too much emphasis on this forum in any case is placed on the requirement for speed merchants.
The game will be won in the middle third where breaks and primary possession will provide quick ball (hopefully) to our full forward line.

He didn't win a peno. He charged right into Cluxton, shoulder into his chest, Cluxton grabs Walshe as they fall, dopey ref and umpire decide penalty, obviously got all excited about the golden knights of the game putting it up to the fancy slickers. Anyway bad mistake from Cluxton led up to that situation and Walshe's finish for his goal was class, nerveless. He is however dirty at times but gets a free pass. I've always felt he's one of those indespensible sort of players for Kerry. I've seen it all now. A Dub complaining about a referee decision 😏😏😏😏 Two decisions - the awarding of the penalty, and the non-awarding of a free.

Different discussion if it was deserved. There have also been instances where pebis have not been won but should have not been awarded. Finally it is unbecoming of you to slip in the comment that he is dirty. Hard and combative yes. Attributes required of all top players. Dirty, never.

I think he has been below par, especially in the championship this year. I though he was poor in Clare before being sent off. Was annonoymus against cork and was whipped off at half time. I think he was on the edges of the games as well against Galway. Kicked a score or two in a poor game for the team. His form line hasn't been great. Sure he is capable of a good game on Sunday. As for replacing him with someone with pace. Our half forward line the last day are all more endurance players than sprinters. Mayos half back line has the burst of pace that always seems to cause us problems when we are run at. I think its a choice between Mikey Geaney and Donnachadha. Buckley has to start as he gives us more going forward than the other two. Also an option for kickouts. Its probably the most difficult part of the team for Eamonn and Co to select. He also could decide to start Murphy there yet. Who knows!

I don't rate Donnchadh Walsh as highly as some but "dirty" is the last word I would use to describe him. If ever there was a fella that just goes about his business without fuss or controversy, it's him.

I find it strange that there is such a debate on Donnchadh when I would say at least 5 other players have been playing below their level in the 3 championship games so far.
I think Mayo will bring a huge physicality to the game on Sunday and Donnchadh will be needed in that middle third for that reason. His runs across the 50, often carried out as part of a 150m run at a fair speed, to either give an outlet for a long kick pass, or to open up space for others to run into are something that he does better than any other player we have in that part of the pitch.
I think Donnchadh and Johnny are nailed on starters on Sunday - the other place in the half forward line up for grabs for up to 4 players, Mikey, Kevin Mc, O Brien and Lyne.

I'd say the "dirty" tag by Rashers comes from Donnchadh standing up and not being bullied by James McCarthy.

I cant see Donnchadh Walsh not starting on Sunday. As regards the dirty player tag, the seagulls must be circling around Ballymun, as Cantona might say.

Donnacha Walsh: The 1 player I could never understand what he offers to Kerry is DW. He has very little creativity, his kick passing and decision making on the ball is very poor. He loses a lot of ball. HE can't go past players Has little or no skill. Not very physical and not a great scorer. He might cover ground but Paul Calvin did that but he brought great physicality power and a huge presence to the game.He certainly isn't dirty I have never seen him do anything outside the rules of the game. When you think of Kerry footbal you think of 15 fellas who are very good footballers whatever the position that can play ball, are creative and skilful and obviously the county that has produced the greatest footballers ever especially in the forwards. I hope he starts from a Mayo perspective. If you don't understand then clearly you don't need to.

Donnchadh Walsh is an all-star footballer. One of the first names on the team sheet.

I'm hearing Killian Young is in line to return. .and Maher could be in midfield. There's a concern with Jack Barry being one black card away from a suspension and missing a final. He seems to have the measure of Brian Fenton but there putting their way in Anthony for Mayo.Fionn would appear to be the one in line to be replaced in the back line. Stephen O Brien may be held back as an impact which means it will be Mike Geaney and Donncha flanking Johnny Buckley with JOD, Donaghy and Geaney inside.

Thankfully the black card suspension does not carry over into the final.

I think Barry having the measure of Fenton is way off the mark. Barry was ok in league final and Fenton wasn't great but I don't think they are clearly connected, I've watched the league final 3-4 times, but still open to correction. The other point on Barry is a number of posters indicating across threads that he has pace. To me he has no pace, same mould as David/Johnny/Anthony regarding speed, unless I've been watching the wrong player? I've nothing against Barry, thought he was good v Galway. Just looking to clarify some points.

I do love the debates on this site very informative and enjoyable. I called the Munster final as being a one sided easy win and was called foolish but that's how it transpired. Mayo for me have not progressed since 2014 while Kerry have. Looking at the forecast it looks like a dry warm day which will suit us. I think Kerry will win this with a bit to spare as I believe Mayo won't hold our FF line. Ultimately this Mayo team don't have the strength in depth in my opinion and in particular the forward line. Kerry -5 with a standout performance from JOD who is due a big game.

Barry has a bit more pace than Moran or maher alright but he is still raw enough in other respects.

I wonder will RTE wheel out John Maughan's old army buddie, Tom 'Tommy' Carr for Sunday.
His unbiased co-commentary would probably be top notch as usual.

Barry is deceptive regarding pace . He reminds me of Paul McGrath every time I see him . He is not speedy like Steven O Brien or Darren O Sullivan but he always seems to be where he has to be when he has to be . He reads the play well and anticipates the moves and fits in well with defence and attack . And the way Mayo play will suit his game .

Okay, 3 minors in a row is fantastic but in the here and now i cant see how you come to the conclusion that Kerry have progressed more than Mayo since 2014 given the manner in which they have squared up to Dublin compared to Kerry.

How have Mayo progressed? Lost twice to Galway couldn't beat a complacent Dublin team who never worry about them. No disrespect intended to Mayo fans but their outfit under Horan was a far better side. They are still relying on the same old boys and have no real strength in depth. While we lost Dec/Marc/Aidan we brought in Barry/McCarthy/savage among others. We have pushed on a won a league and beaten Dublin. Kerry have given Dublin far more to think about than Mayo. The Kingdom will prevail on Sunday I've no doubts.

Now this is true of lots of players but the reason I brought it up is because of the discussion above and also because he has got away without comment where others have had lots of comment. I also posted lots of good comment about him over the years even whilst some here were writing him off so I'm giving an honest opinion. Something perhaps changed with him, he has become more physical and very 'in your face', you could call it taking more of a leadership role and also his response to the reputation of him and Kerry a few years ago as too soft.

to be fair I think Donnacha has developed a hard edge to his game over the past five years. He probably had no choice to survive at this level.

Barrys strength is in the first 5 yards..he's quick off the mark and powerful.Fenton tried numerous times to break off him but couldnt make a yard..he's also more direct than Maer when on the ball..in my humble opinion he changes the whole dynamic of our midfield.
