Assume after the exposure we have had recently on TV that this is not in Tg4 today?

Sounds like a game of 2 halves from the bits I heard. It must be the first win in Castlebar in a few years....

I was at Rossie v Donegal game and where the ref stamped his authority for the full 73 mins. The Rossies played class football even without their 4 first choice mid fielders and could have struck 4 more goals. Donegal simply never found their gear and looked a different team to the one that beat Mayo 2 weeks ago. Rossies were so confident on the ball in every respect and McStay has certainly worked wonders. With 2 home games remaining they are certainly looking good and they will have massive support if the numbers that travelled today is anything to go by. You'd have to say they will compete with anyone as the year progresses and it looks like a fever has taken off in the county. They were joy to watch and their long range scoring ability was remarkable. Donegal could do it when they wanted to but it just appeared to take so much effort, ah maybe one of those days. Rossies were so industrious and they personified an emerging team that know that it is only hard work and doing the simple things well that will yield results. Conor Devaney oozes of class and I am told that they have done a lot of development work for this past 15 years. Coupled with Brigid's success there is an excitement about them although it has to be said that Donegal looked below par.
An account of our own game will complete the jigsaw on that Ballybofey form although the scores suggest that a late starting Kerry have made a big step up in a few short weeks, with significant margin wins over 2 teams that were in full flight.

Kerry really upped the ante (from the sounds of things) for the second week running. Sounded like Gooch is getting to grips again, some telling passes had Weeshie getting all hot bothered at a few of them. Would be interested to see the Donaghy red card, sounded harsh. A lot more lads getting done for smaller lads running low into their tackling arm. Big win even if Mayo were missing a few.

From reports it sounds like it was a really good game. Please tell me there were cameras. Sunday game is at 7.30 tonight.
2 pts from Crowley today to add to his goal last week. He's getting fond of going forward. Another Tomás in the making?

The result today means that we are in a fairly strong position heading into the last two games in terms of avoiding relegation.
Down can't catch Kerry - Kerry on 6 points versus Down on 0 Even if Mayo win their remaining two games they would still only end up on 6 points (and Kerry have a head-to-head victory over them, if they were the only 2 teams that ended up on 6 points) Also on the score differential front which comes into effect if 3 or more teams finish on the same points 6 Kerry are currently +19 compared to Cork and Mayo who are on -16, while Monaghan are on -4
Looking upwards in terms of the semi-finals, we do have a head-to-head win over Donegal who are on the same points and score difference as Kerry so there is every chance of a spot - the thing is that both teams Kerry have to play are right there in the relegation battle.

Kerry 2-13 Mayo 0-14
Colm Gannon reports from McHale Park, Castlebar DONNCHADH WALSH’S GOAL 11 minutes into the second half saw this game swing in the visitors favour, Walsh was in the right place to punch the ball to the back of the net after Robbie Hennelly had come to punch a dropping free away, but the ball skewed off his glove behind him and Walsh was there to pounce. Kerry were reduced to 14 men 18 minutes into the second half when Kieran Donaghy was shown a second yellow, but by that stage Kerry were 2-8 to 0-9 up and Mayo had to go hunting for goals. Eamon Fitzmaurice’s men had trailed by 0-7 to 1-3 at the break, but they outscored Mayo 1-5 to 0-2 in the third quarter of the game. Darran O’Sullivan’s quick feet caused Mayo problems all day as did the probing runs from deep from Peter Crowley. Mayo also finished with 14 men when Diarmuid O’Connor was shown a second yellow card late on for a clash out on the far sideline. A Johnny Buckley goal a minute from the break saw Kerry go in trailing by just one point rather than four in Castlebar. Buckley got on the end of a move that saw Colm Cooper slip in Darran O’Sullivan whose fleet of foot turn created the space for Buckley to fire low past Robbie Hennelly in the Mayo goal. Up to that point Mayo had been dominating the game and should have had two goals themselves, only for Aidan O’Shea to fire over from less than five yards out and Brendan Kealy’s face getting in the way of Jason Doherty effort that saw the Kerry keeper having to be replaced by a blood sub Brian Kelly before the break. Kerry had gone into a two point early lead through Darren O’Sullivan and Peter Crowley scores, but Bryan Sheehan’s radar was off from the placed ball and he missed two very scroable efforts. Mayo’s scores came from a free and 45 from Hennelly, while Diarmuid O’Connor and Shane Nally kicked two fine scores with Kevin McLoughlin adding one from play and another from a free. Mayo chased the game hard over the closing stages, but they kicked 12 wides over the course of the 70 minutes and Kerry punished them on the break on numerous occasions down the home stretch. For Mayo it means they are staring relegation in the face with two games left to try and secure their division one status. Scorers for Kerry: Johnny Buckley (1-1), Donnchadh Walsh (1-0), Peter Crowley (0-2), Darran O’Sullivan (0-2), Colm Cooper (0-2, 2f), Bryan Sheehan (0-2, 2f), Marc Ó’Sé (0-1), Barry John Keane (0-1), Brendan O’Sullivan (0-2) Scorers for Mayo: Kevin McLoughlin (0-3, 1f), Aidan O’Shea (0-2), Robbie Hennelly (0-2, 1f, 145’), Andy Moran (0-2, 2f), Diarmuid O’Connor (0-1), Tom Parsons (0-1), Shane Nally (0-1), Seamus O’Shea (0-1)

Mayo 0-14 Kerry 2-13 Donnchadh Walsh struck a second-half goal for Kerry who made it three wins in a row in Division 1 with a five-point victory over Mayo, as they continue to battle back from their poor start to the season. They lost their first two outings against Dublin and Roscommon, but this was their first win in six against Mayo in the league. They were 0-07 to 1-03 behind at half-time but they grinded it out and Johnny Buckley’s goal was also pivotal in MacHale Park. Kieran Donaghy and Diarmuid O’Connor both saw red late on, while Peter Crowley got a black card. But Kerry recorded an impressive win, as Mayo fell deeper into relegation trouble. Mayo lost their opening three games against Cork, Dublin and Donegal, but the win over Monaghan last weekend was a huge boost. They take on Roscommon and Down in the remaining games. While Kerry clash with Monaghan and Cork. Kerry had the better start and hit the first two points against the breeze, through Peter Crowley and Darran O’Sullivan. But the Mayo defence began to get on top and crucially the returning Colm Cooper was kept quiet by Ger Cafferkey. In turn the Mayo attackers found their range and although he missed two gilt-opportunities from frees, Kevin McLoughlin opened their account in the eighth minute. Bryan Sheehan was also luckless from the placed-ball at the other end, and it took the hero from Mayo’s win over Monaghan, goalkeeper Robbie Hennelly, to slot the first free. Diarmuid O’Connor and Shane Nally kicked two more points as Mayo began to roam freely in the opposition half. However, Sheehan tapped over a badly needed free for Kerry in the 21st minute. Aidan O’Shea almost goaled for Mayo shortly before the half-hour. Jason Doherty fed the ball into him just outside rectangle and he wasn’t able to shrug off the attentions of the Kerry defence but he still managed a point.
That gave Mayo a 0-05 to 0-03 lead in the 27th minute, and further efforts from Hennelly and McLoughlin gave them a solid four-point advantage. But Kerry struck a vital goal in added-time. Cooper was involved. He gave the initial pass to O’Sullivan and he pirouetted to leave the Mayo defence for dead and send Buckley in on goal - the Cromane clubman made no mistake with an emphatic finish. Kerry built on that after the break and they hit four of the first five points in the second-half. O’Sullivan, Buckley, Sheehan and Cooper all contributed as they took a strange-hold on the game, and a 1-07 to 0-08 lead. Tom Parsons hit back but then Walsh riffled the clinching goal in the 12th minute of the second-half, after a Cooper free fell short. Mayo were now four in arrears and Cooper piled on the pressure with another free. Donaghy was sent-off for a second yellow when he tangled with Moran but despite McLoughlin’s point Mayo couldn’t get any momentum. Instead Kerry reassumed the control and although Crowley got black for an off the ball incident with nine minutes left, their bench performed heroics, and Brendan O’Sullivan kicked two fine efforts late on. Kerry: B Kealy, M Ó Sé (0-01), M Griffin, S Enright; A O’Mahony, P Crowley (0-02), F Fitzgerald; K Donaghy, B Sheehan (0-02, 0-02f); D Walsh (1-00), P Murphy, J Buckley (1-01); D O’Sullivan (0-03), C Cooper (0-02, 0-02f), S O’Brien. I have to say very impressed with Brendan O'Sullivan playing great stuff. A great man to have to bring in although i would like to see him start a game to see how he does.

Odhran MacNeilis got a very similar second yellow v Rossies and Conor Daly (Rossies No 5) saw Black that IMO wouldn't always have been given, so one would be thinking that refs were on red alert after last Sunday, well Yellow, Red and Black alert! Poetic justice, or is it injustice, becomes me and sure who can blame me on such a great day, hopefully Vet was on location and his report would cap it for us.

Big two points in Castlebar, even if Kerry only get a viable alternative midfield pairing, Kerry's Achilles heel, to close out championship games later in the year, this league will have been hugely worthwhile.

They didn't show the first one but Donaghy's second yellow looked awfully harsh.
AOS might have had a penalty; on the other hand it was arguably a free out for charging in the first place.
Could have done with a long-range lens on that main camera.
Great win.

Looking at the table, if Kerry win this game they can't be relegated with against the head with Mayo coming into play. This should ensure another hugely competitive game again this weekend! Head to head only counts in a situation where 2 teams are level on points. It comes down to points difference if 3 or more teams are level. I'll eat my hat if Kerry get relegated after today's result.................................

Southward, I think you hit the nail on the head regarding charging. I thought many times during today's game that the whole idea of charging being a foul seems to have been dropped! That and that old chestnut of stopping a player running on for a return pass seem to be totally ignored by refs now.
Anyway, great second half in particular...although I did enjoy Johnny Buckleys goal towards the end of the first!
Very good performances throughout the field for Kerry. In particular I thought Darren, Donnacha, Gooch (2nd half), Mark Griffin, Marc O'Se, Aidan, Bryan, Paul and Star showed championship form.
A good game to win and sets us up now for a very interesting trip to Clones.

Darren seems to be our player of the league so far. A man reborn. Hopefully he can stay injury-free and he doesn't empty the form tank too early in the year.

Any reports from people who were at the game? Any sighting of Mayo4Sam ? He made a brief return here last week..! Spring in the air and in the Kerry step in Castlebar after this today! Though slowly into the game, we applied a lot of pressure on the Mayo kickers who in turn could not find their targets; our defence particularly Marc, Aidan ( had a stormer) Peter and Mark Griffin were in a defiant mood and approaching half time down 0-7 to 0-3 I was expecting more from us in the 2nd half; then on the 35th minute, Darran ( our best attacker on the day), got a run on his marker, fed Johnny Buckley and he found the net with a low drive after selling a dummy to his left; happy enough with this and the breeze to our backs in the 2nd half; we laboured at times in the opening half, Star tried manfully at midfield with little help; up front only Darran posed a threat with our half forward line struggling. We were a different side in the second half with everyone upping their game; true Mayo fell back to their old ways, Hennelly missed 4 kicks from the ground then Andy Moran tried for a goal when a point was on offer; in truth, Mayo were always playing catch up after Donncha punched to the net when Hennelly missed his clearance in the air and we went on then to play our best football of the day; Star thundered into the game, Bryan now much more involved with Gooch pulling the strings from a half forward position; Rory Hickey then intervened when brandishing a 2nd yellow to Star ( first yellow very harsh, 2nd one deserved) and then a black card to Peter after a Mayo wide- did not see what happened but Peter was incensed and appealed to the ref but to no avail; Johnny Buckley went to midfield following Star's departure and was called ashore with 10 mins remaining to be replaced by Brendan O'Sullivan- if Mayo felt they now had a chance they were mistaken, as O'Sullivan showed a huge appetite for work and kicked two wonderful points on the run- what an introduction! We saw out the 5 mins of added time comfortably, Marc finding the target from a left footed effort to add icing to the cake. This was a huge win, building on the morale booster from last week and should put us on course for the semi finals. Peter Crowley was my man of the match with an outstanding display in defence allied to his 2 scores from play- he snuffed out Aidan O'Shea who at times resorted to bullocking his way through and was rewarded some times for this by being awarded a free- great too to see the Gooch back to form in the second half, pulling the strings, taking responsibility and generally being Gooch!

Personally I think Fitzmaurice is going to have a headache come championship time on what midfield pairing to choose. We are spoiled for choice now. Star and Sheehan were outstanding today. They were a bit unsteady at the beginning and with their handling of the ball but they grew into it and dominated. Stars first card was for mouthing off it seemed to me from where we were sitting. Second one was harsh but he does himself no favours protesting for everything. Crowleys black card was a debatable one. He was all over O Shea inside in the square and there was no ball kicked in. Is this cynical? They were both at it bare in mind also. He played a great game along with all the backs, we were rock solid today. Bar the chance O Shea got which he was either charging or fouled and wasnt given we never looked like conceding any goal chances.
We moved the ball very well in the second half after a poor 35 mins in the first half. I'd put alot of it down to the state of the pitch which was horrendous. There were alot of good balls played into the forwards that bounced in front of them but went everywhere with the poor conditions. Gooch must have been blocked down 4 or 5 times but as soon as Mayo started to tire and push forward he started to pull the strings my god you will never see better foot passing from some of the balls he played today.
Mahony and Griffin were outstanding for me today, I would give either one Man of the Match. Mahony is flying in the sweeper role, picking up a massive amount of ball. Brendan O Sullivan also made a massive impact. I was told during the week that he is a cross country runner, and seeing him today I'd beleive it. For such a big man he did a pile of running when he came in. He is deceptively quick also. He could be a great impact sub throughout the championship this year. Also for me, I feel Kealy has to be our keeper come championship, hes a great shot stopper had a couple of great saves today and his kickouts are far superior to Kellys in my opinion.
We look nicely placed for a semi final place. Only for a few missed frees in Killarney against Roscommon we would be sitting pretty in that position already. It's hard to imagine we still have the likes of Moran, Maher, O Donoghue, the Geaneys, Tommy Walsh and Killian Young to come back in. There will be serious competion for places all over the pitch come Championship time.

Peter pulled Aidan O'Shea down off the ball. Ref didn't spot it at the time but obviously the umpires must have drawn his attention to it. Good officiating to be fair. Lads have to be aware in these games that eyes are on them all the time. If more umpires and linesmen stood up like that a lot of the messy pulling and dragging off the ball would be eliminated.

Cillian O'Connor was badly missed by Mayo. The keeper was on free-taking duty with little enough success.
Any day you see Gooch play like that is a good day. He seems much better stamina-wise this year and those who would seek to write him off are foolish.
Brendan O'Sullivan has surely earned a start now.

Am bit confused. I thought win today means guaranteed safety. We have Mayo on head to head and Down are gone. Am I missing something or is it 3 for the chop?. Didn't make but saw Rossies second half. They were 3 points up but Donegal were slowly closing when McNiallais went. Unbelievable. Two yellows in 3 mins. I'd say he was 'flipped' out of it after. Fair play to Ros, 1-19 is fair totting.
Brendan O'Sullivan is catching the eye. No nonsense, power, running and scores oozing out of him off both feet. In racing parlance,"one for the shortlist"

Great win. Crowley was my man of the match with Griffin and Darran not far behind. Brendan Sullivan could be a gem off the bench later in the year.
I thought midfield was poor in first half. Both Donaghy and Sheehan gave away some awful ball which led to Mayo scores but they both improved in second half.
The defense looks extremely solid at the moment.
Huge crowd today.
