Guiney I'd say has taken the same view as Ronan O'Connor: if I haven't made the starting 15 regularly by now I never will..

It has been said on here that Sheehan and Griffin will come in for MFR and P Reidy, is this true? If it is i think it could work out pretty well for us. When Bryan came in the last day he worked well out the field, his creative play out there could help bring Gooch and Donaghy in to play more. Also if Bryan moved out the field it could free up Broz or Dec to roam further up the field and possibly cause Cullen a lot of problems form center forward. The team has'nt been picked yet no it hasn't but i like those proposed changes

i've been to a lot of yer league games over the last few years with herself who's from kerry, and i always thought mossy lyons was a good player that was unlucky not to play more in championship. i think ye have to rejig the defence a little for the next day. the absence of a full back is the biggest problem, and i think ye could do with moving tom sullivan back to the corner. it would be a lot of changes, but if i were picking yer defence (god forbid) 2 A.O'Mahony 3 M.O'Sé 4 T.O'Sullivan 5 M.Lyons 6 T.O'Sé 7 K.Young
or something like that anyway. definately those 6 players, but in what order i dont know

My humble attempt at this weekends team 1 D Murphy 2 M O' Se 3 T Griffan 4 T O' Sullivan 5 T O' Se 6 A O' Mahoney 7 K Young 8 D O' Se 9 S Scanlon 10 D O' Sullivan 11 E Brosnan 12 P Galvin 13 C Cooper 12 K Donaghy 15 MF Russell
I was tempted to drop Brosnan and put Declan O' S in center forward. But D O' S has played so well at wing forward all year, why move him. We really need to get a few more defensive options. I thought Reidy was poor the last two games, but Mossy Lyons seems to be the only replacment. With the way Dublin move their players, i think T Griffan would do ok on Conal Keaney. And he wouldnt spend all the time in front of the goal. Marc O' Se to pick up Alan Brogan

Would like to see seán sull get a starting place on sunday and brosnan dropping back to midfield,i know he has'nt played well for kerry this year, but we need someone really mobile to counter the dublin kick outs and get us running at dublin from well out the field. It worked for mayo last year. Quirke is a 20 min man at best and scanlon, who did ok against monaghan, lacks big game experience.I would stick with mike frank who had a great game against dublin in parnell park in the league, he is a pure finisher and will get a lot more room on sunday than the last day. sheehan did well when he came on against monaghan but i dont think he is brave enough. As regards the backs Tom Sull and reidy were'nt great the last day but i reckon we will see tom at his best the next day, and reidy is still a better option than mossy lyons. Monaghan are a good side, kerry need to improve and i think we will. Looking forward to it big time, should be a great spectacle-come on da kingdom!!! 1 D Murphy 2 M Ó Sé 3 T Sullivan 4 D Reidy 5 T Ó Sé 6 A O Mahony 7 K Young 8 D Ó Sé 9 E Brosnan 10 S O Sullivan 11 D O Sullivan 12 P Galvin 13 C Cooper 14 K Donaghy 15 MF Russell

Dublin have won most of their games by getting scores in short bursts. Against Derry....... 5/6 points in two spells of domination. Two goals in seconds v Laois.
Kerry must try to disrupt these spells of domination......
Will Dublin suffer the sort of malfunction that happened to Meath......

Far too many changes there Branch.....
Suspect we'll see Mossy Lyons start, MFR may get the nod and Brosnan will start with Sean on if Galvin doesn't start.

Here's a thought: The main reason for moving Donaghy to 14 was to get ball into the full forward line over the 'blanket defence' used by Tyrone, Armagh and even Cork and Meath to a lesser extent. Given that Dublin play a fast open brand of football and that McConnell is more vunerable to a fast, nippy player, my view is that kerry should go back to basics and play more of the fast, low ball into Gooch, MFR and Donaghy or even possibly bring Donaghy out and leave Gooch and MFR inside on their own. Start Donaghy midfield perhaps with Sheehan full forward? Its not beyond the bounds of possibility but I'd be surprised. Kerry played a much more patient approach in the Cork game, they didnt just pump the ball into Donaghy. Remember Mike Frank was the best forward that day, the primary reason being they fed ball in he thrived on. Still though I'm not convinced that Dublin will actually play a "fast open brand of football" against us. Dublin have been playing Mc Connell full back all year to blood him for a tussle with Donaghy. They have been gearing up for this semi final all year. If I was the Dublin manager I'd be taking a long look at the Monaghan game and saying - if we do this to Kerry we've a better chance of beating them than if he try to take em on in a fast open game of football. how Dublin approach it tactically will be crucial....... could they adopt Monaghan tactics that quickly........ if its a wide open game it will suit Kerry more...... Four goals could have accrued from the long ball into Donaghy the last day........ dont give up on it yet!!

Before the 2001 semi final v Meath the captaincy changed hands.........
Brian Sheehan has enough on his plate without the captaincy. It should be one of the lads in their late 20s or older. Simple as that

If Sheehan starts he is captain. I don't see a problem here. Declan can hardly complain given that he was captain as a 22 year old and has been fortunate to hold his place at times over the past couple of years. He has had a good run at captain and if someone else has a chance, I would expect him to have no complaints.

KEITH BARR IN THE INDEPENDENT
I don't believe Kerry rate this Dublin team
Tuesday August 21 2007
LET me begin by reminding the host of experts and cute Kerry hoors this week that it is the men who wager their money who determine favouritism in a game.
And, again, lest any cute Kerry hoor starts to sneer at the Dublin hype, or how the dizzy lads in the city are "buying into it", that we are well aware in the capital that the bookies have placed Kerry as odds-on favourites to win next Sunday.
No cute predictions from any Kerry legends will change those odds before the semi-final. Dublin are up against it, I know it, they know it and, believe or not, the fans know it.
Once again I must mention that there is more waffle spoken about Dublin than any other side -- much of it, I may add, by their detractors. But I was really surprised at former Kerry manager Jack O'Connor's recent analysis -- or maybe I shouldn't be surprised.
The 'Hill 16 factor' is something that never affected me as a Dublin player. There's no doubt that Dublin enjoy remarkable support (it's remarkable by any standards, regardless of population, and is the best support in the GAA by a street) and they bring massive atmosphere to every championship game. I respect that, but I would disagree with Jack that Dublin feed off that atmosphere. Hill 16 isn't much used to you when Tomás Ó Sé is breathing down your neck.
Fans are the same the world over, they react to performance. Look at Cork on Sunday -- they prospered with only a handful of their hardcore supporters present.
The way to stop Dublin is to stop their big players -- Ciaran Whelan, Alan Brogan et al -- from performing. To analyse Dublin as some flash-in-the-pan football team that require massive support to perform is highly disrespectful to Dublin players, and should be used as a motivating factor by the players and management this week.
I often find some pundits hide behind the circus that surrounds Dublin. If you don't think Dublin will win, explain why; if you do, then spell it out and highlight the weaknesses in the opposition. I think this tendency to lump the team in with the fans is utter nonsense.
I have always tried to be constructive about Dublin's performances and their chances, and I notice that some people from outside the county feel that my assessments are somewhat harsh. Well, I'm tired of warning Dublin players of the dangers of being lulled into a false sense of security and listening to the sweet somethings from beyond the Pale.
I do not believe that this Dublin team is rated in Kerry in particular. I have certainly heard enough anecdotal evidence from that county to know that, quietly, they are very confident of a Kerry success next Sunday. Whether their manager Pat O'Shea is as confident, I don't know, but Kerry cannot countenance defeat, regardless of what Páidí says.
Dublin do have a chance against Kerry but if we want to be realistic about it, suffice to say they had a better chance last year when they faced Mayo at the same stage.
Bernard Brogan and Mark Vaughan have added an extra string to Dublin's bow but both men must realise that when they line out on Sunday, they will face defending like they never experienced before. There will be less space, less time, less possession and a lot more 'close encounters' than people tend to associate with Kerry.
The Ó Sé family are the beating heart of this Kerry team and their track record, unlike Dublin's, is proven. Yet, that is not to say that Kerry aren't vulnerable. Dublin need to be in their face and by that I mean ferocious tackling and remorseless pressure. I'm not so sure that every doubt about Kerry's vulnerability was buried when they defeated Armagh last year and they are still struggling to find a partner for Darragh Ó Sé.
We've been down this road too often to think that Mike Frank Russell or Eoin Brosnan will be as bad again next weekend yet, if they survive the cull, then Dublin need to turn the screw even tighter than Monaghan managed.
There are genuine questions to be asked of Kerry. They are the dominant team of this decade -- can they become the first in 17 years to land back-to-backs and silence the doubters once and for all? It is tantalisingly close now, so is a fifth All-Ireland medal for Darragh; will the ultimate goal blur their short-term vision?
Pat O'Shea was quick to point to Dublin's form after scraping past Monaghan but let's look at it closer. Dublin struggled past Meath who were demolished by Cork who, in turn, fell to Kerry. There might be a 'feeling' that Dublin can take Kerry but 'feelings' are hardly reliable guides and I believe that unless Dublin raise their performance substantially they will not overcome this massive hurdle.
What the Dublin players must realise is that only they can control their destiny, only they can bury the nagging doubts that surround the team. Men like Jason Sherlock, Whelan, Barry Cahill and Shane Ryan have been around long enough to know that this is their opportunity to stand up and show what the Dubs are made of.
And the management must make the hard calls where necessary, regardless of reputation or potential. If a lead has to be defended, then the danger men must be swamped. Dublin simply cannot fade out of this game.
These players have taken enough abuse over the years. It's time to draw a line in the sand.
THOSE wondering whether there was a big game in Cork this season got an emphatic response on Sunday.
I was seriously impressed with Cork's physical presence. I fancied them to ambush Meath but I didn't think they would brush them aside so easily.
It was men and boys in the physical stakes and from the moment Nicholas Murphy landed Darren Fay on his behind to fist a point, Cork's intent was signalled.
After the Munster final, Billy Morgan left the field with a smile on his face. He is no mug, he knew his side had closed the gap on Kerry and in that defeat he learned a lot. Morgan got his tactics spot on, and may have settled on a winning hand in the process. In an effort to avoid landing balls in on top of Fay, Michael Cussen proved more than a handful around the middle early on and their running game was executed really well.
Donncha O'Connor, Daniel Goulding and Kevin McMahon may have grabbed the headlines but Cork's victory was dug out of the middle third where Meath could not cope with their power. With a solid defence, an excellent midfield and, now, a scoring forward division, Cork will take some beating in the final.
I wouldn't be tearing Meath apart on the back of this. I've already stated that it was a successful season for them given their starting point. They are a young side and they learned a valuable, if harsh, lesson on Sunday. You simply do not come from nowhere and land in an All-Ireland final.
I've no doubt that Morgan will now really fancy his chances of ending the famine in Cork and, regardless of who wins next Sunday, Cork will remain underdogs. Happy days says Billy.

Does anyone know is Paul Galvin is definatly available for Sundays game? Was talking to someone who is in training wit Kerry, no names, never asked him about Paul but bout the team he wasnt even sure but reckoned that Mossy would be in instead of Reidy and Sheehan would start instead of Mike Frank...

The issue of Mossy Lyons getting on prompts me to ask the following question:
If the Kerry management are confident that Mossy Lyons is capable of starting an all ireland semi final, despite not starting a game since Donegal in the league on March 25th, why didnt they bring him on against Monaghan when Reidy was struggling?
Now I agree that Mossy has been a great servant and has hung around and bitten his lip despite being the perennial bench warmer (when many of those around him jacked it in) and should have the experience for Croke Park but I just wonder has he enough first team action under his belt for what will surely be the the biggest test of the year.

I dont tink mossy lyons is up to it. He has been a great servant to kerry football over the years but can u honestly say that u would be happy with mossy marking the brogans, vaughan etc. Whenever u hear that gooch is going well in training it is always mossy that he is marking. Tink he is a good player but not championship standard

Can't see that the captaincy issue is of any significance whatsoever in this game...if Bryan starts, hes captain, end of. Declan is already on record as having no issue with that. Lets not try to make a problem where there is none.
A good article by Keith Barr and not too far off the mark even if contradictions (and in any sporting analysis, where isn’t there some contradictions?)
Trying to second guess the selectors, I suspect the following will be the team announced this evening:-
D.Murphy M O'Se TO'Sullivan P.Reidy T O'Se A O'Mahony K.Young D O'Se S.Scanlon D.O'Sullivan E.Brosnan P.Galvin C.Cooper K.Donaghy M.F.R.
So in other words, no changes. I can't, to be honest, see Mossy starting, though he may well be introduced. Tommy Griffin, if fully fit, is more likely to displace Seamus Scanlon than Reidy I suspect. Pat O'Shea and the selectors had a lot of time to think about their best team before the Monaghan match and decided on the above. Now do you put the Monaghan match performance by Kerry down to ring rustiness, Monaghans tactics or something more serious. As Eugene Magee put it after the Monaghan match , was it ring rustiness or a sign of terminal decline? We'll have a better idea after Sunday but I suspect they may have gone for the ring-rustiness explanation and they may well be right. Personally, I would go for freshening things up but having said that, if you're to look at what elements of the team might give rise to the terminal decline issue, you're not left with a lot of evidence.
We have some of the greatest players to ever wear the green and gold and some who will be regarded in the same light in the years to come. Sunday will hopefully be another step to embellishing that reality further. Dublin will hit hard and fast and then we'll see if we have the belly for it. I think we will, once again, show we have.

Post by buck02 on Aug 21, 2007 11:33:32 GMT
If Tommy Griffin is fit would you play him midfield, with Scanlon missing out, or in the backs with Reidy missing out? Or would you put Brosnan midfield instead of Scanlon, with Sheehan coming into the forwards and Griffin in the backs ahead of Reidy? Its hard to see the management making too many changes ahead of this game, I think that would put out the perception that they dont know their best team and arent exactly sure of the ability of some players.

A question why wouldn't ye start Tommy Griffen midfield?I thought Scano done ok center field the last day but Tommy offers alot more mobility which is needed in the big Croke park pitch?
I felt Scano got alot of open space against Monaghan which he could exploit(And i fell Tommy would) due to his lack of mobility!!
